Finder not opening in dock

When i click the finder application in my dock, it wont open... What do i do?

Do you get a dot or some other indication it is open in the dock?
You need to look in your user Library/Preferences for thecom.apple.finder.plist. Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.
Relaunch Finder by loggin out/in and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your User library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
Show User Library
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • Programs will not open from Dock

I have updated my Macbook Pro with Yosemite which has led to - a lot. Programs will not open from Dock, they are just revealed in Finder. Scrolling with mousebuttons in a browser will zoom instead of scroll, the courser will not change after changing tool in Indesign. Just to mention a few problems i have discovered so far. I think I was an idiot to uppgrade to Yosemite. PLEASE HELP!

Open Disk Utility and Repair Permissions, then quit DU and Restart the MBP.  If that does not clear the issues, restart again holding the Command and R keys, and from Utilities on the menu bar select Install Mac OS X.  That will reinstall Yosemite but leave your content and settings intact.  See if that repairs whatever is broken.

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Finder window does not open when dock icon is clicked

    Hi would like some help
When I click the finder icon in the dock nothing happens, the only way I can get finder open is to go file>new finder window
just started doing this 1 day ago ?
    thanks

Have you got an instance of finder open in another desktop? If you right click on the finder icon you can show all windows, then close any that are open. Failing that relaunch finder, if you click on the Apple in the top menu bar, go to force quit, and select finder, then relaunch it to see if it solves your problem.
I once had this problem when I had left a finder window open in a connected tv screen, disconnected the tv and had the same problem of not being able to open finder normally.

  • Finder not opening automatically

Have just taken delivery of a brand new iMac and was excited at seeing Mountain Lion in action.  However, after just a few short days, am noticing that Finder isn't opening/launching automatically on startup, although the 'light' is on in the Dock.  I have to click on the icon to get it visible which I know shouldn't be the case as someone who has been using Macs for a few years.  Would be grateful if anyone has any advice/tips on how to resolve this issue as it's annoying, especially on a new machine.
    Thanks in advance.
PS Safari also not opening at startup even though it's listed in the login items along Mail which is opening fine.  Googled and found a work around for the Safari problem which involved dragging a webpage to Desktop then saving that and listing the webpage address in the login items but can't see how to do the same for Finder.

    Hi, let's start with this...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • Finder not opening

Finder icon is visible on dock but does not open. No way I know of to access HD or idisc to open files. Clock does not show correct time on screen but does in program,
Safari and Mail function but drop out if print is selected. This from my machine that has operated without a problem until today. Only hint of causing this problem is that I deleted several login in apps just prior to losing Finder. I have tried setting up a test administrator account and booting up holding down the "c" key to no avail. I have my original tiger discs but hesitate to boot up with them fearing losing all the updates preferences and possibly my files. TIA to any helper with savy to get me on track....

Glad you could boot in safe mode anyway.
(thanks for the hint to wait for the apple icon before depressing the shift key)Credit for that goes to Malcolm.
When you choose the .dmg for the update and "Get Info" (command-i) on it, what application is listed under "Open with"? If it is not DiskImageMounter choose that application if you can. Now try double-clicking the update .dmg. EDIT(the path to DiskImageMounter is /System/CoreServices)
Also can you navigate by using the "Go" menu? If you can enter ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist and trash it.
and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist trash that one too.
Then log out and back in again. Or restart.

  • Finder not opening/ Error 10810

    Hey!
I have recently update Mac OS X to 10.6.6 from 10.6.2. It's been running great, but after quitting an app from the Mac App store, Finder just did not appear. The toolbar on the top of the screen was not appearing, and when clicked the Finder icon on the dock, it gave a message: "Finder.app cannot open -10810". I had no other choice than to Force Shut down my computer my holding the power button on my computer. After restarting, I was able to open Safari, but Finder would still not open. I force shut down my machine again and the sane problem happened again! I read a couple of posts on the discussion board and tried to turn it off (not the way I would like to turn off my beloved iMac :P) and disconnected my external hard drive. I turned it on and it's working fine...
    HELP PLEASE!
    Christopher

See Finder Error -10810 in Snow Leopard causing problems and:
The following have been suggested as possible solutions:
    1. If you're using 10.3, you need to get rid of the following:
    /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices.6B.csstore
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
(where '~' means your Home directory, i.e. '/Users/yourname')
    2. If you have Virex or other virus software installed, try uninstalling it. Be sure to use uninstallers that come with the software because simply deleting the application does not fully uninstall most virus software.
After deleting the referenced files above you will want to do a restart. Then use Disk Utility in your Utilities folder to repair permissions.
The problem can also be caused by USB drives connected to the computer and/or third-party modifications to one or both of the USB drivers in the /System/Library/Extensions/ folders. If you have any third-party USB drivers installed try booting into safe mode to see if that eliminates the error.
In general restarting the computer should resolve the error, but if it's being caused by other software installed then the error will recur eventually.

  • Mail will not open from dock and wont allow me to shut down, Help?

My mail will not open from the dock and if I try and close my computer it is prevented by the application mail being open.  Help please.

You can try to Force Quit the Mail application by using the keys OPTION COMMAND ESC, from the window that pops up select Mail and clcik force quit.
Have you tried launching Mail from your Applications folder? It launches properly, drag the icon off the dock, it should vanish in a puff of smoke, you can then go to the Applcations folder and drag the Mail icon back to the dock to create a new shortcut.

  • Help!  Desktop completely blank and finder not opening

    Hello
I was using iTunes last night and went away to make a cup of coffee. When I went back to it, the screen was flickering all over the place and only stopped when I closed the lid down and re-opened it. The screen returned to normal, but when I closed down iTunes and then tried to do the same with Finder, the 'spinning wheel of death' cropped up. So I went into Forced Quit to try to shut them down altogether.
The shut down didn't work and since then the desktop has been completely blank. Also, although Finder is indicated as being open on the dock, the taskbar at the top is competely blank when I close all other applications down. I can open other applications (hence being able to get online here!) but when I try to close the computer down, nothing happens.
    So to summarise...
Finder is not responding and will not let me close it down
The Computer will not close down at all
I can't get into a Finder window in order to delete things to free up memory.
HELP!!! To add to misery, it's a work laptop!!!
    Thanks!

    thanks for that.
Unfortunately i have next to no memory left to be able to download this. Have been trying to delete some files and music to make some room, but cannot do this without Finder (vicious circle!!)
    any more options?!!

  • Finder not opening new window automatically in Mountain lion 10.8

I recently upgraded to mountain lion 10.8 from Snow Leopard 10.7. Before when I rebooted the computer the Finder would always open a new window.  Now it does not and I have to open a new window every time. Is that the way it's supposed to be or is that a bug?

Migration from Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger to OS X Lion
Migration from Mac OS X v10.4 computers to OS X Lion over your Wi-Fi or a wired network is not supported. However, if both Macs are equipped with a FireWire port, you can use Target Disk Mode to transfer your data:
Verify that both Macs are equipped with a FireWire port. Note that different model Macs may have different FireWire connectors, which will require an appropriate cable, such as FireWire 400 to FireWire 800.
On the Mac you want to transfer data from, Restart, and immediately hold the T key.
Wait for the FireWire logo to appear on the screen.  If it does not, restart and try again.
Connect both Macs via the FireWire cable.
On the Mac you want to transfer data to, Open the Migration Assistant application.

  • Finder not opening and trash won't empty

    Hi All,
I've had my iMac OS 10.4 for over a year and this is the first real problem I've had. Even this discussion forum is new to me.
Truly, I'm at my wits end.
So... Finder isn't opening. I think because the Finder doesn't open, it's not letting Trash empty.
    Who knows?...
I've double-clicked on the bottom and it won't open but it seems to be stuck on the top bar. When I click onto Finder on top, it says 'about Finder, run full Finder, hide Finders, or hide others'.
I click onto 'run full Finder', the beach ball comes up for a few seconds but nothing happens.
I checked help; it told me to go to Utility disk and verify disk permissions. I did that and also verified disk.
It came up that 1 HFS volume needs repair but for whatever reason I can't press the repair disk button.
The computer doesn't allow me to.
Looking through in Apple support, it said something about going on single mode
    and sbin/fsck -fy
    did that and no go
BDAqua - I ran it with fsck -f and it said volume appears to be ok
I reboot and Finder and Trash is still not working.
I try Utility disk and NOW it tells me volume verification passed but both items still don't work.
I know this is too much but I'm hoping someone could help.
Can you help me out there?....
    I'm Noe_help!

    Try this:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
