Finder not remembering position within folder

I have my Finder set up to automatically open the Applications folder in Icon view. If I scroll down to the Utilities folder (or anywhere else) open it and then click back, I'm back at the top of Applications folder. It's a small, but frustrating problem. I thought 10.5.1 would fix it, but it didn't.

This, and the inability to remember your preferred type of view for each folder (without manually setting it on a folder by folder basis), are apparently designed in behaviors.
Apple's Finder UI team have officially "jumped the shark".
Sigh....

  • Why will finder not remember the window size that I set it to?

Every time I open finder I have to drag it out to the size I want it. It will not remember the size I put it at. How do I get it to remember. MBA Mid-2011 with Lion installed 10.7.4.
If I restart it its back to a real small size again and with a 11" MBA that is small.

I don't think it's a Lion issue, as I have no such problems.  But the way window positions work is a bit hard to grasp, as it can depend as much on how you get a particular window open as on the folder you're choosing to view.
If you can double-click your hard drive icon on the desktop and get the window position and view to stick, but after a restart it has forgotten that position and view when performing the same action, then you can try deleting the invisible .DS_Store file inside the relevant folder (in this case, at the root of the hard drive).

  • Finder not showing user library folder

When I open Finder on my iMac, then click on my user name in the sidebar, I am not seeing the Library folder for my user name.  I need to modify some of the application support folders for specific applications, but I cannot find them using Finder.  These folders are specific to my user name and are not located within the Macintosh HD/Library folder for the entire computer.
They should be in the path Macintosh HD/Users/[my username]/Library/Application Support/[application name].
But for some reason, the "Library" folder doesn't even show up in Finder when I click on Macintosh HD/Users/[my username].  It's visible when I open one of the applications and use preferences to access folders in the application support folder for that application, but not when trying to get to the same location using Finder -- which I need to do in order to copy and paste some of the files.
Any ideas on why my user-specific Library folder isn't being shown in Finder?

J.Richardson: I'm sorry, but what you described is not intuitive at all (to me, at least). Mac OS is not bad at all, but unless Apple gets off their high horse and maybe provides some *intuitive* controls for fine-grain system administration, people will continue to have valid points to cite Windows (version whatever) as having legitimate advantages over Mac. Recent example that they FINALLY changed; not being able to resize windows from any border.
Humboldtrick: Thanks for the terminal command! I was also incredibly frustrated by this change.
    Thomas A Reed:
I have noticed the train wreck when dealing with (for instance) a SQLite management program - trying to view the contents of a database created in the temp space XCode's "iPhone Simulator" uses - can't browse into the correct directory, nor does the search tool look within the directory, NOR can you simply type a path in. Only other way I would've been able to access files created there would be to use terminal to copy them to a directory not within the "Library", every single time I wanted to view the results of a change! Since the process lost efficiency, and gained annoyance for no benefit to me, that is a train wreck. Also, your "chflags nohidden ~/Library" syntax only works if the user has terminal sitting at the correct directory; there was no reason at all to have griped about what Humboldtrick provided.

  • Where can I find "Notes" backup among backup folder/files?

I had to get a new "old" iPhone from the Apple Store in order to get back to 1.1.4 from 2.0 - which was an unmitigated disaster. Since could not sync my backup file as it was already 2.0 ized, had to just start from scratch. Of course, Notes do not get sync'd right? So I've lost them. But I suspect they are one of these jibberish named backup files from the backup folder. Question is, which one? I'd like to salvage it and place it in my current (new) backup folder. Can anyone help me identify it?

OK, here's an update. I went into my old back up file and started opening up each and every file one by one (using text edit to read them). Many are just gibberish and code, but some you can decipher what's in there. And lo and behold, I found the Notes file. I was able to read my data inbetween a lot of code. So I printed it out and now at least have what was there. My first thought was to take the file, go into the current and active back up file and replace the empty Notes file with the old one. Then I would wipe my phone completely and restore the back up with the old Notes file contained within. But I hit a snafu. When you go to wipe it, it tells you that all data would be lost (ok) but that the iPhone would automatically be updated to the latest software version! Ayyyyy, that would mean going back to the 2.0 I just exchanged my phone to get away from. So alas, I just decided to take the print out and start entering each of my Notes back into the Notes application one by one. Didn't take that long and some were old info I didn't need anymore anyway. So, I'm back up and running now.

  • Audiobook playback does not remember position

I like to get audiobooks from the library and rip them to my ipod. I am very good about setting the "compilation", "remember position", and "skip when shuffling" flags to yes. I have never had a problem with my ipod. Now, on my iphone, it forgets where I was sometime after midnight, or the next day. During the same day, it remembers fine for example I like to listen while commuting. It remembers where I left off from the morning commute, but the next day, in the morning, I have to fast forward to the spot I left it at the day before. Please help.

I get CD books from the library. There are usually 10-15 in a typical unabridged novel. I put the CD in with the parameter to show CD only. I select ALL tracks, join them, and then import. After all CDs are on board, I have to edit the info for all of them, and this is where I set the remember position flag. I then have a Smart Playlist that looks for this title only, and for those tracks that have a playcount of zero. It works very nicely on my IPod. I can't figure why it loses position. This morning it was right where I left off.

  • External Discs; Wndows not Remembering Positions/Size...

    Hi all,
OK, this is driving me nuts: for some reason, my Mac won't remember the position/size of a window after I close one and open the app back up again, nor will things like external discs, ipods, etc. show up on my desktop when they are connected (ipods show up for an instant, then disappear.) It worked fine for a while then, one day, both things just gave up the ghost--any ideas what might be causing this?
Note: Yes, I have Prefs in Finder set to display extrenal drives, ipods, etc.

As far as I can tell this problem was never fixed and it goes back years:

  • Finder not refreshing file or folder names, in NFS mounts.

We are experiencing the an issues with NFS mounts, in both 10.7 and 10.8 machines.  After mounting NFS shares, the file/folder names do not update in other MAC finder windows until it is unmounted and remounted on the MACs.  This DOES NOT happen in our 10.6.8 and earlier machines.

  • Mini Player Not Remembering Position

I like to keep the iTunes mini-player in the lower right-hand corner of my screen, and until today it would always remember that position when I clicked the zoom button. Now, every time I click the zoom to go to the mini-player, it centers it on the screen. I have not done anything to update my system since yesterday. All the latest updates and fixes are applied. Any ideas?

Moved it to a new location a couple times and that fixed it.

  • Finder not remembering settings

Finder has suddenly stopped remembering my display settings.
    What can I do?

How are you accessing the Applications folder? It actually makes a difference. Thus, if I double-click my hard drive icon on the Desktop, I get a Finder window in Column view. If I then click on the Applications folder it will open in Column view too, because the view is propagated from the parent window. However, if I click on the Applications icon in the Sidebar, then it opens in its own default of List view. If I make an alias of the Applications folder and put it on the Desktop, and double-click the alias, it opens in List view. Also, if you use the Back button you will get a view from whatever the folder you were in is set to (this is probably a bug). If I access the Applications folder from the Go menu, or with the keyboard shortcut of Command-Shift-a it will open in List view.
The preference for a folder's default state is stored in the invisible .DS_Store file. Occasionally this file becomes corrupt. If that is the case you would need to use Terminal to remove it.

  • Finder Window Remembering Last Position?

Sometimes when i am working and in say Photoshop or Dreamweaver and i go to find an image from a folder i move through them until i find it.
A few moments later i might need to find something else in that folder.
Is there any way to make finder remember the last folder i was in, via maybe an app?
As sometimes the folder i need to get to is buried in multiple ones.
The only quickest way i can find is to put the folder i am working in into the places areas of the finder window.
I know from the drop down it lists recent places, but only remembers certain instances and not this one...

Default Folder X - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Finder window size and location not remembered

    I have OS X 10.10 installed.
When I press Cmd/shift/H to open a finder window showing my home folder I get the default location and size for the window.  I resize and relocated the window and close it.  When I press that key combination again, the window is now showing the new size and location I previous set.  Unfortunately, when I restart the computer, this modification is lost and when I press that key combination the window opens with the default size and location.
I have used the key combination of Cmd/Shift/A to open a finder window showing Applications and Cmd/Shift/U to open a finder window showing the Utilities folder.  I have been successful in resizing and relocating these windows, and having the system remember my modifications after a restart.  It appears to only be the Cmd/Shift/H combination that is faulty.
Any ideas how to fix this problem?

    Paddster7,
You could try trashing the hidden file inside the folder that stores some of its positioning and size settings.
    To show your hidden files.
Launch ( Terminal ) -> Paste in the following ( defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean true ; killall Finder ) -> Press Return.
Open the ( Offending Folder ) -> Delete ( .DS_Store ) -> Restart -> Move folder how you want to to stay -> Restart -> Did it stay?
To reverse your hidden files back to hidden.
Launch ( Terminal ) -> Paste in the following ( defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean false ; killall Finder ) -> Press Return.

  • Mail Not Remembering Window Position of Previous Session

Mail has started forgetting how its main window was sized when previously using the application.
When I open Mail, the window dimensions are like those for a small screen - not as previously sized.
Is this a known problem (could not find with discussion search) and is there a fix? Thanks!

Interestingly, Mail does seem to remember the window positions, in its com.apple.Mail.plist, but it isn't applying the remembered positions. I tried a few times, and on at least one try it got the positions correct. Could it be that if you quit, restart then quit and restart again it will have them right on the second restart?

  • HT1725 Where do I go when I can not remember my security questions to find the answers or to change them?

I can not remember my security questions answers to use my itune card to purchase things. What do i do or where do I go to retrive the answers?

If you can't remember them then go to Express Lane  and select 'iTunes' from the list of 'products' in the middle of the screen.
Then select 'iTunes Store', and on the next screen select 'Account Management'
Next choose 'iTunes Store Account Security' and fill in that you'd like your security questions/answers reset.
You should get an email reply within about 24 hours (and check your Spam folder as well as your Inbox) - but some recent posts are saying that Apple have temporarily suspended the reseting of security question/answers whilst account security processes are improved, so it may take longer

  • My appleTV does not remember podcast playback position

I have the same problem. Video podcasts remember playback position. Audio podcasts do not. Major bug.
