Finder not responding after Archive and install

I recently encountered my first problem ever with my mac(new in '05) This is the first mac I have owned; I have worked on G3's and G4's in the past. After reading through many message boards and support pages I don't believe my problem to be similar but different to previous posts.
My problem started off with an OS problem that I was able to diagnose in the "help" book I purchased when Leopard came out. It said I should Archive and Install to remedy the problem and keep my files. I ran the archive the install (it gave me no options to preserve user or network settings). After Archive and install my computer started up alright, but I got the permanent beachball and the finder does not work. it is constantly non responsive. I can relaunch finder, but after it restarts it goes non responsive immediately once again. So I can't actually access my "previous system" folder to move anything over. I checked my dock items and finder, they opened, but my itunes asked for an update. I list of update items came up; I did the non-restart items first. they updated fine, (my itunes old itunes playlists are viewable but not playable now) then I did the items that required a restart. That is when I found out that I could not shut down or restart my computer with std. procedures.
Currently I can only access my spotlight or apple pull down menu if I am in a functioning dock program (safari or itunes, quicktime. etc.) after reading some more support pages it looked like the common thing to do was check permissions and verify disk. I did, I repaired two permissions and the disk was OK. I did look at the HD files, they were as I remembered, but unaccessible (greyed out) and the "previous system" folder was present. +It didn't look like I would expect. The HD looked same as it used to just with a previous system folder.+ After checking the permissions and verified the disk I tried a hard restart. It came back the same as before, unresponsive finder and only the few dock items worked along with spotlight. I checked permissions and disk verify again and everything was OK.
Sorry to be long winded I am trying to be thorough...In short, My finder does not work after doing an Archive and Install to fix my original problem (which has been fixed)...the remedy for an unresponsive finder is to do an archive and install. Is another archive and install really going to fix my problem? Can I archive and install OSX 10.4 and work my way back up to 10.5.6?
Secondly is there a way to restart my computer without doing another hard restart?

It won't let me add a new account. I am locked out and when I try to unlock it gives me the beachball and becomes non responsive after it tries to authenticate.
I looked at the log file, I am not sure what exactly to look for. I am no programer. I see an awful lot of negative wording. I see some errors like "error (-4956) locating menu extra but they are mostly under system preferences...I see some stuff in the loginwindow that says is not a full path... Otherwise, the only reference I see to the finder is when I have force quit the finder.

  • FCP Studio 2 wont respond after archive and instal... please help

Hi I have been on the imac forum with the first half of this problem. Ill start from the beginning to give you some background.
I did a routine apple software update and when restarting my computer it got stuck on the blue screen and would go no further. After trying everything I had to do an Archive and Instal. This worked and I can now fully boot up.
However, after this process my FCP S2 will not work. When I click on any of the FCP S2 icons, they bounce and nothing else happens. It does not matter if I do this from the apps folder or on the desk top. The strange thing is that DVD Studio will open and works like normal.
Is there anything I can do to get my FCP S2 programs to work again and if not how should I go about reinstalling so I will not lose all my projects. What is the proper procedure for deletion and reinstallation.
Thanks so much for your time

backup project and all other work files
clean install Mac OS (this wipes the hard drive clean)
install from installation discs FCP Studio
    reinstate the project files

  • 3rd party plugins not working after archive and install

    hi,
i have a few 3rd party plugins in my logic pro, such as all the native instruments, waves diamond, ik multimedia plugins, atmosphere and a few more,
i was getting an error on my g5 when i tried to run diskwarrior from the disk. it was the kernal panic message, it said i had to restart my mac, therefore i couldnt run diskwarrior from disk.
i did a bit of research and a few people suggested doing a archive install, so i did.
well what do you know, i had to re-install logic 8 again. other programmes such as transcribe, itunes idvd imovie etc were ok.
but logic didnt load up, o i had to re-install logic again,
also before i did that i checked to see if my 3rd party plugin were working in standalone, so i check all the native instruments and they seemed to work ok, T-racks deluxe works fine, so i thought they should all load up in logic.
once logic was installed again and had to get all the updates all my 3rd party plugins did not show up on my AU validation.
is there a way to get logic to see my 3rd party plugins or do i have to re-install all of them again.
    cheers for the help
    lib

Then check if the NI AU components are actually where they should be:
    HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components
If not copy them over from your "previous systems" folder which was created on your HD during the archive and install process.

  • Partitions not mounting after Archive and Install

I have just installed 10.4 after putting it off for ages. My machine is G4DA with 1.5ghz processor upgrade and a Sonnet ATA133 card for hooking up my 180gb Seagate 7200.7 HD.
I had the HD partitioned into three equal 60gb partitions. One for system, users and apps, one for my video stuff and one for my audio stuff.
The install went fine (Archive and Install option) onto the System partition. However after restarting, only the System partition is mounted. Disk Utility recognises the other two partitions (they have the generic document icon next to them rather than the little HD icon). When I run the repair it tells me there is nothing wrong with either partition.
Disk Warrior also sees the partitions and also repairs them fine without any errors. Even the VISE installer for some of my software installs lists the partitions as available to install on but neither mount.
I have been able to recover the data from the partitions using Data Rescue. Just wanted to know whether there was any way of getting the partitions to mount via the command line or otherwise before I resort to reformatting the drive.

The Terminal.app command diskutil will do that. Launch it and type
man diskutil, hit the return key, and read all about it.

  • Where is mail stored after archive and install?

    Hello All,
I need to know where my old mails are stored after archive and install. To give a bit of background... This is a work computer. Its a MacMini which came with 10.4 installed. Before I joined the company boss upgraded to Leopard and thats what I have been using all this time. Recently it blue screened and I had to do an archive and install after trying various other options.
I only had the original install discs with 10.4 in them and not the Leopard discs. Since I needed to my computer up and running, I used those discs and did an archive and install.
I have all my old documents, etc but I couldn't open mail from the previous systems folder because its a different OS.
Is it possible to retrieve my old emails without having to install Leopard again?
    Any help is appreciated.

When I started the computer up, instead of the login page with the account names coming up, there was just a blue screen. There are lots of articles that gave suggestions to try but nothing worked so I had to archive and install.

  • Cd inserted but unrecognized after "archive and install"

After "archive and install" OS X.2 and clicking on "save settings", everything works fine, except sound cds are not recognized when inserted. iTunes works fine with the original files on hard disk, but doesnt see the cd (it did before).
I repaired permissions. I deleted the "previous systems" folder. still nothing.
I did notice that the "previous systems" folder has an "audio" file in it but the current "system" folder doesnt. I tried copying this audio file into the current "system" folder but I get the notice that it cant be changed.
I need to hear cds on this computer. Any ideas?
(It isnt a speaker problem as the itunes files play fine).

Hi John in Vancouver! And Welcome To
    Discussions!
Open System Preferences > CDs & DVDs.
Adjust the appropriate setting there, and see if it
    helps.
    Good Luck!

Thanks, ali, but I did that early on. Didnt put it in the post. On insertion of a CD I have it set to open iTUnes.
I found a further problem which is that the midi set-up no longer locates my external keyboard. I will check the discussions under audio for this one, however. (I did check about the CD problem in the audio discussion but nothing there.)

  • Recover mail after archive and install

    Hey there good mac people,
I recently archived and installed on my ibook g4. It was successful, my problem is that I forgot to backup all the mail I had in my osx mail app.
The previous system folder (library<mail<mail accounts<com.mac.mailaccounts<English.lproj< file, but I don't know if this will help restore or not?
Some of the mail is still on the server, but it is set to delete from the server once a week, and thus only a weeks worth at best is still on the server.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?
In the future, what's the best way to back up mail?

    Hello art-is-work.
I don't understand your problem. Archive and Install should have preserved all your data, unless you told it to do otherwise. Did you?
Mail stores most preferences and all account settings in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. Everything else, including all your messages and mailboxes, is stored within the ~/Library/Mail/ folder.
If the problem is that you told the installer to not Preserve Users and Network Settings, then Archive and Install should still have saved a copy of your entire home folder in /Previous Systems/Previous System N/Users/, where N is a number. The old Mail folder and preferences file should be there. You can just copy them to the appropriate location of your current home folder, or follow the somewhat convoluted procedure described in the following article to safely restore them:
How to get files from a previous home directory after Archive and Install (Mac OS X)
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder.

  • Tried to reinstall PS CS6 from download, will not load after download and install, need assistance

I tried to reinstall PS CS6 from download, will not load after download and install, need assistance.
    Thank you.

Thanks for the suggestion - but I eventually tried again and was able to contact via "chat" to someone qualified to help. The problem was that in my existing "bridge" - preference was (I think by default) - checked to startup in background on Login. I did not realize this - because I don't think I set it that way in the first place (maybe I did a few years ago) - and I could not see anything in task manager to suggest that bridge was running an application or any process - but when I learned this - I was successful in installing PS CS6.
Yes, I'm still not on solid ground re: whether or not I want to change from "owning" the tool or renting it -- what concerns me is that is sounds like regardless of users wishes, Adobe is headed in this direction and will eventually make it financially more feasible to go that route. At the moment I think they are "asking" for everyone to get on their bandwagon, but who knows. They have a powerful set of tools, that they continue to support and advance - and along with those development and support costs, they also would like to make a profit - so I understand if their past marketing model is no longer sufficient.
    Thanks again.

  • Where to find after "Archive and Install"

Hi everyone. I recently installed Leopard onto my Macbook. During the process, I used the archive and install feature to save all of my old data and files. Right now everything is located in the "Previous System" folder on my hard drive. I am trying to find my iCal information, but don't know where it's located. Does anyone know?
I didn't backup any of my calendars. I didn't think I would have to since all the information should already be saved.

    aimili,
If you actually accomplished an Archive and Install, you should be able to open iCal and the previous calendar information will populate your upgraded iCal. What calendar information is displayed in iCal when you open the application?
If your old calendars are not displayed you should be able to find your previous information in folders named something like 4A1DC586-14EC-4D42-B659-BEBA31968385.calendar in the Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/iCal/Sources Folder of your previous system folder. There will be as many of these folders as you had calendars on the previous system, but they will have different alpha numeric names on your computer than the example which I just gave you.
Open these oddly named folders and you will find the corestorage.ics files containing your former calendars.
Use iCal to import the corestorage files by using the iCal>File>Import... menu command to navigate to and import the appropriate corestorage.ics file for each of your calendars.
Did you ever use .Mac? If so, you may also have calendar information that can be retrieved from that service.
    ;~)

  • Not recognizing USB adaptor after Archive and Install

I recently did an Archive and Install on my PowerMac G4, but after finishing, my Belkin f5d7050 USB adaptor was no longer being recognized. I downloaded the 10.3.9 combo update from Apple using a different computer and got the file to the G4 using an ethernet cable, and made sure I had the correct driver, but to no avail. In the Network preferences, under Network Port Configurations, I see the option for "Ethernet Adaptor (en1)," but greyed out. What can I do make my machine see the adaptor again?

Could you tell me how you fixed this problem, mine is doing the same.
    Many Thanks.

  • Problem Deleting Previous System after Archive and Install

Earlier in my time with this wonderful iMac, I did an Archive and Install to try and resolve a slight problem. I read all the docs beforehand and knew it would save the previous system in its own folder and saw that I could likely delete that folder afterwards.
I have waited months since then, (almost forgotten about this folder) but have never had reason to want anything there, so today decided to delete it.
I dragged the entire previous system folder to trash and tried to empty trash. It deleted most of the stuff, but kept one package DownloadReader7.pkg complaining of locked files.
I have used Pacificist to look at the contents of this package and it says it is a receipt. It contains elements of Adobe Reader Download Manager.app
I have looked on my present working system and can not find an equivalent.
    So two questions...
    1. Is it safe to delete this package (if I knew how)?
    2. If it is safe to delete it, HOW do I, when it appears to have locked elements when I try to empty trash?

It's safe to delete any files in the PSF.
Usually all you need do is press the OPTION key before selecting Empty Trash. If that doesn't work the next thing to try is restart the computer after you've dragged the file to the Trash. If neither works then visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on resolving Trash problems.

  • How do I restore previous settings after archive and install?

I had to do an archive and install (with the box unchecked about users) on Friday after I had a kernel panic issue, but now I don't know if there is a way to restore my previous settings and access my previous files. I found the "previous system" folders, but it restricts my access to almost all of the folders, and I can't even find all of my music (iTunes) files or my stickies. I also can't find all of my bookmarks and internet settings. I'm totally panicked...there is a lot of information for my business that I really can't afford to lose. Please help me!

    See the following:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107297.
The following can also apply to locating and moving data from a Previous System Folder. The "Home" folder will be /Users/shortname/ where "shortname" is the user account name you created.
Because you did not transfer the users accounts when you did the Archive and Install you may have created a new user account and password that is not the same as the one you previously used. This means the PSF has different permissions associated with it.

  • Cannot log in after archive and install

Hello, everyone. ive been searching the support pages of the apple site for an hour and i cannot seem to find a resolution to this...
I just peformed an archive and install ad now i cannot log in. i think this happened once before and i called apple support and i was told to log in as root. the problem i am having is that the login window does not give me the option to change the user field, it only allows me to type a password. every time i type my password, the login screen shakes. so even if i wanted to type root into the user field, i cant. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thank you.
p.s. i was running tiger but lost my tiger disc so i am using the disc that originally came with my g5 which has panther on it...
    dayna

    Hi, Dayna.
    1. Be sure the Caps Lock key isn't active: passwords are case sensitive. You may see an exclamation point on the right side of the password field if the Caps Lock key is engaged.
    2. There was a similar problem if one performed an Archive and Install (A&I) of Jaguar (10.2) over Panther (10.3): see "Can't log in after installing Mac OS X 10.2 over 10.3." I've not heard of a similar problem with performing and A&I of Panther over Tiger, but it may be related. However, before trying the advice therein to perform the A&I without selecting "Preserve Users and Network Settings" you'd need to have a backup of your data, otherwise you risk losing everything in your account. IMO, the most expedient solution would be to buy a replacement Mac OS X Tiger disc. If there is an Apple Retail Store in your area, that would be the quickest place to purchase one.
    Good luck!

  • Running Time Machine after 'Archive and Install'

I had a strange problem with my iMac with finder and dock crashing on booting and not being able to open any files. It's been off to an Apple centre for repair, they've done an archive and install to replace the OS, and I apparently now need to run Time Machine to restore my system (don't have the computer back yet).
Am I right in thinking I'll just plug in Time Machine hard drive, insert my Leopard CD and then use Utilities > Restore System?
What's worrying me is I'm going to reintroduce the problem that was fixed by the Archive and Install in the first place! Any help or thoughts very much appreciated,

as mentioned you don't have to do that after an archive and install.

that's very likely to happen if the problem was not hardware. did they do anything with the computer besides doing an archive and install? if not, you most definitely should NOT do a full system restore from TM as this would bring your problems back.
Any help or thoughts very much appreciated,
