Finder not responding correctly

I started having some problems with Finder and other "core" applications recently.  All I have been able to find are symptoms of a problem, but not what could be causing the issues.  Here are some of the symptoms:
- When I press the power button, the normal shutdown menu appears, but before I am able to click on any option, the computer essentially resets--the background changes to the log-in screen, before changing back to my background, after which the taskbar reloads, and all of my startup applications open.  All applications that were open when I pressed the power button quit.
- The same happens when I press cmd-alt-esc, the command to open the force quit dialog, except the force quit menu never appears.
- When I go to "Force Quit" from the Apple dropdown menu, nothing happens.
- When I try certain things in System Prefs., the application freezes, such as searching Finder for a startup application to add to login items.
- No hotkeys relating to Finder work.  For example, normally I press ctrl+D to open my downloads folder, or ctrl+X to open a finder window.
- I can still browse Finder by opening a new Finder window from the File dropdown menu, or by pressing cmd+N, but many icons are messed up, with the same broken image file appearance.
- Strangely enough, my iTunes hotkeys also don't work.  All of the rest of them do.
If you have any ideas, let me know! I'm stumped on this one! I know this computer is old, but I'm not ready to give up on it yet.  I'm running OS X 10.4.11, in case that matters.

Also: as far as I can tell, Finder won't mount anything.  Too nervous to try an external drive though!
Thanks,
Henry

Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, make an appointment at the genius bar and show them the problem and maybe ask them to run a hardware test. Since you just reinstalled the OS, that should rule out a software issue.
It can be hard to troubleshoot over the phone. It may be easier to find the problem if someone can look at your Mac in person and see what it is doing.
    Good luck!

  • Please Help, My Finder not Responding and can not open after upgrade OS X Maverick!!!

    Hello guy,
I ask this for help, yesterday i upgrade the OS X Maverick, after finish all the the installation,
now my finder not responding even i try to relaunch many times, or can say that can't open Finder right now.
So what can i do? can anyone tell me here?

If that doesn't fix it try starting in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs?
    Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items (-), you can always add them back with the (+). Don’t just “hide” them by checkmark.

  • Screen not responding correctly.

Has anyone else had issues with their screen not responding correctly.Mine is typing wrong charaters or none at all. I've updated to the latest ios. restored, reset and everything else I can think of. The phone is less than 6 months old.

Did you restore as new without the backup? If you restored as new and then restored the backup, there is a chance that something in the backup could be causing it. But frankly, that seems unlikely to me, but the only way that you could know for sure is to try restoring as new without the backup.
if you did restore as new, there isn't much else that you can do on your own. Take it to an Apple Store and let them have a look at it. It could be hardware related and there isn't anything that you will be able to do about it unless you want to have the device repaired on your own, since Apple does not repair iPads. They replace out of warranty iPads with refurbs for a cost starting at $250.00 in the U.S.

  • Touchpad touchscreen problems (erratic behavior/not responding correctly/etc) temporary solution.

I bought a HP Touchpad about a month or two after it came out. It worked pretty much as you'd expect it to until some time ago. I started getting a problem where the screen would go crazy and not respond correctly to my touch inputs. Web pages would jump all over the place, cards would zoom out, etc, in other words, they would behave erratically. After some testing I noticed that certain areas  of the touchscreen would NOT respond at all to inputs while others would make the screen go crazy like I mentioned previously. I looked for information on the web to see if other people where having the same problem and found reports of the same behavior. Unfortunately there where no solutions offered. At that point I tried turning on and off the Touchpad which did not resolve the problem. My next step was to try to reinstall the OS with WebOS Doctor, but I read a post where the user reported similar behavior and reinstalling with WebOS Doctor didn't fix the problem. Needless to say I was bummed out since I figured it was a hardware problem with the touchscreen. After more testing I found a temporary solution to the problem which seems to suggest that the probem could be software. The solution when you get the problem is to hold down the power button and the home button at the same time and keep them pressed until the screen shuts down and the touchpad restarts. Once the OS comes back up it works like it is supposed to until you get the next episode of screen epilepsy. At that point you need to do the procedure again and it will fix the problem temporarily. Usually the fix lasts for a few days in my case. The fix also solves other problems I have with the touchpad. Problems like, videos not playing fluidly or freezing every few seconds although the sound plays fine (youtube), sound gets messed up (sounds are played in a robot like pitch), and others. If anybody has questions or other suggestions let me know, I will answer the as best as I can.
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

I think the YouTube and sound problems are separate from the other erratic behaviour.  Recently my touchpad won't play YouTube videos beyond certain points, starting a few seconds in possibly due to the advertising pop-ups - I can skip forwards, but that means I miss crucial parts.  My sound also goes 'robot-like' until a reboot, which is incredibly annoying!  Your touchscreen problems may be specific to your device - try going to Device Info / Diagnostics and see if that tells you anything.

updated iphone 5 to iOS 6.1.3, now I am having trouble with keyboard not responding correctly and screen zooming in by itself...
    Buttons pressing themself...
Also, my main screen is permanently zoomed in...
    suggestions?

Double tap the screen with THREE fingers, that should get it back to normal again.
Then go into Settings > General > Accessibility > Zoom > OFF.
Not too sure about the keyboard and random button presses though.  Back it up and restore from iTunes, see if that fixes it.

Application "FINDER"not responding,Desktop files disappeared & " also "Trash" not working svn after relaunching several times.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process (Finder) in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Computer Freezes - Finder (not responding)

So I've tried as many fixes and solutions that I could find and nothing is correcting what's happening. Even after deleting my hard drive and doing a clean install of Mavericks from a usb drive. I can use the computer for maybe a 1/2 hour and then it completely freezes up and in Task Manager it says the Finder is not responding. I can work in Safe boot mode fine, which makes me thing its a hardware issue. But I've done a hardware test (restart, hold "D", do test) and it says there is no problems.
I heavily depend on my computer for work so this  very frustrating. Any help would be appreciated. Here is my latest Etrecheck file:

It may be the Saffire hardware causing the problem not to mention the Saffire.plist.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
Click Go then move the Saffire.plist file to the Trash.
    Then restart your Mac.

  • Maverick finder not responding com.apple.iconServicesAgent consuming most of the resources

I have had an interesting week.  Beginning on Tuesday, my computer began acting unstable. Tried to reinstall the operating system - caused me to replace the current disk with my weekly backup disk.  Yet, when I operate the current system, I find that programs (except those requiring video such as DVD player or Quicktime) work well but the finder is not responding. Was able to run EtreCheck.  According to the report, the only process was that highlighted in red was com.apple.iconServices Agent.
I have repaired permissions and cleaned the cache. Attached is the report from EtreCheck. Any ideas what is going wrong and how to correct it?  TIA.
    Steve

  • Finder not responding - solved

I had an issue with Finder not responsing after 10.8.1 upgrade. Rigth clikcing finder in dock would show it as "application not responding", with "relaunch" as the only option. Relaunch did not relaunch, and did not correct the issue. If the finder menu was up, cursor would spin with color wheel, and no response. Retsart did not solve the issue.
I tracked the issue to permissions. Rather than edit the plist, I used the Permissions Repair utility, which may be accessed via launch control, given that finder is not working.
Ran the "repair permissions" option and restarted. All now working fine.

Hi, see if you can do this..
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • My MacBook Pro keeps freezing and not responding correctly.

Okay, so yesterday I finished FaceTiming a friend and I closed my MacBook Pro like I normally do so it can sleep on my account. But when I open it, it keeps crashing (like it shows the screen and then for like 15 seconds it shows a gray screen and then back to the desktop background) and its not responding as fast as it normally does. It doesn't even show the dock where Safari and FaceTime and iTunes is. But when I go to the Guest User account, it all works fine. I don't know if I've been hacked or not but I would really appreciate it if someone has found the solution to this problem. Thank you so very much for trying to solve it in advance and Happy Holidays.

  • Finder Not Responding OS 10.4

HELP! While dragging a bunch of photos from a file to the Trash, I accidently dropped them on the desktop. I now have over 4,000 photos copying to my iMac desktop--or trying to. Finder is not responding. I have relaunched and forced a restart. It has been more than an hour and my desktop appears to be frozen--or, at best, still "working".
Is there anything I can do to stop the copy process? Do you think it will eventually finish copying?

Keep an eye on disk space. If it ever flows over 85% full, most have found that to be the point of diminishing returns when it comes to filling up the hard drive. Burn to CD and DVD what you can beyond that until you can get another drive. See my backup FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    and my disk full FAQ
    http://www.macmaps.com/diskfull.html
Hopefully that will help you in the future.

  • Finder not responding, after upgrade to 10.6.4

Ever since i upgraded os x to 10.6.4, the finder has been not responding whatsoever.
My hard drive still has more than 100GB (out of total 250GB). and i have used Terminal to delete files in trash and nothing left in my desktop.
When i connect my Time Machine external backup drive, i cannot open Time Machine neither.
The even more serious problem is that I couldn't even save my files to another location or open files (e.g. using Pages - Files - Open...) from other locations.
I tried to verify and repair the disk using Disk Utility; it doesn't work neither. it says it cannot repair the disk.
I also tried to boot by Mac OS Installation Disk and then use the Disk Utility; nothing helps.
I hope my description has been enough for you to analyse what could have happened and give possible solutions.
    Many thanks!

I tried to verify and repair the disk using Disk Utility; it doesn't work neither. it says it cannot repair the disk.
Well there's your problem! If you have unfixable disk damage on your boot drive, it's going to cause file corruption which can in turn cause many widely varying problems.
First thing you need to do is make sure you've got a good backup. If you don't have any backups, it could be too late... with disk damage, any of your files could be corrupt at this point. But do what you can. See my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/backups> for help with that.
Second, you can try to repair the drive using a different tool, such as [DiskWarrior|http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html] or [TechTool Pro|http://www.micromat.com>. However, IMHO this is unlikely to help if you're already experiencing symptoms of file corruption, which you are. But it's something to try. (I don't actually own either of those utilities, because I always make the assumption that if my hard drive is badly damaged, so might my system files be, so on the rare occasion this happens I just go straight to the step below.)
If nothing else works, you'll need to erase your hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch, then restore your data from backups. You'll want to restore as little as possible from the backup when it comes to settings files, as those could be damaged and could bring instability back into your squeaky clean new system.

  • Finder Not responding after result of moving all my music HELP

I am really panicing here and you probibly get this allot but....
i was moving some duplicate songs into the trash and selected the wrong files to delete and moved all my music to the trash so i thought no problem i will get it out of the trash and put it into a temporary file so that it does not clutter my desktop so i did that. then i moved all my files by accident and now they sit on my dekstop, the problem now is that my music is on my desktop but i cannot acess my finder as it is not responding and taking up all my cpu. i don't want to be drastic and replace my os to solve the problem becuase i really need my music back. and i don't want to lose any of my music as me being like everyone else have not backed it up.
is there a solution to this where i don't have to replace my os or lose any of my music. because my finder is not responding i cannot acess spotlight properly and get all my music back help please anyone i am realy panicing here :>

The exact string given will move the current desktop folder to a folder named OldDesktop which is located directly inside your home folder; this is the folder in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon. Once done, the Finder should become more responsive, and you can retrieve the items you want on your desktop from the OldDesktop folder. Nothing will be deleted from the computer.
