Finder not starting in OS X 10.4.9 on eMac

last week, installed 10.4.9 update on eMac and had lots of problems. The only thing left that is not working is that after login the Apple toolbar at top, only the clock comes up. (rest doesn't show)Nothing shows on desktop, no HD icon, shortcuts. I've tried running DiskWarrior on eMac, but still same. I can get the Apple toobar to come up if start iphoto, but can't click on the Apple menu itself. If try to browse to open file within programs, it crashes and closes program. The eMac is on a network that logins to Mac OS X server. Any Suggestions would be appreciated. Have been trying to research and solve this problem for 1 week, trying to avoid having to re-install the OS.

What OS X version did you update from? Did you get 10.4.9 via Software Update or by downloading and running the full OS X Update Combo 10.4.9 (PPC)? (It's worth trying the stand-alone Combo updater again in either case.)
When the OS was updated, was the Mac allowed to fully complete the optimizing and restart on it's own? At least some 10.4.x updates have involved double starts (the computer restarts, the grey screen/white Apple logo comes up, the startup runs a little while, then restarts again), and the 10.4.x updates have generally taken a long time (five minyes or more) for the first restart after updating (with subsequent starts being faaster than before). If anything interrupts the restarting after updating, that can damage the Finder in particular. If that's the case, an Archive and Install really is the most practical fix.
Do you have any third-party menubar add-ons installed? Incompatible menu add-ons (haxies) are a known source of problems especially after an OS or security update. Start Up in Safe Mode and disable or update to 10.4.9-compatible versions any add-ons. Note: it can take upwards of 20 minutes for Safe Mode to complete startup once the grey screen / white Apple logo appears and you release the shift key, as a faceless version of Repair Disk runs in the background.

Finder not starting after 10.5.4 update

I'm not sure if this is directly related to the 10.5.4 update since it happened a couple of days after updating.
When the computer starts up, and after I log in, the Finder just shows a blank grey background, with no windows or items on the desktop. The Menu bar is non-existent, except for the right-hand menu-bar items (battery, time, spotlight etc), which appear with no pale menu-bar background.
The Dock works, which means I can launch other apps successfully, including the Safari I'm using now. Once I have launched another app, I cannot switch to the Finder. Clicking on the Finder's icon, gives me 'Application not responding, Hide, Relaunch', but relaunching has no effect.

Nothing's changed after that. There's a couple of user accounts on the computer, and I tried deleting the com.apple.finder.plist in all of them. I've also restarted in Single User mode, and fsck-ed, put the computer into firewire target disk mode and run disk utility from another machine. No joy.

Firefox has stopped working altogether (Windows 7). It will NOT start. I have uninstalled everything that I could find to uninstall, and then re-installed.

My Macbook Pro, circa 2007, does not start up correctly. It gets stuck opening Finder. Does this sound like a Hard Drive or other hardware?

Hello. Need a little help. My Mac Book Pro is having start-up issues. I am running Snow Leopard on this computer. It is bootcamped up to run a PC portion as well. I started having this problem a few weeks ago. I tried to back up the drive, but it would not even let me do that. I wiped it clean (I had a relatively new back-up and it is secondary computer) and reinstalled the OS. It worked well for a couple of days, but started getting held up with opening the Finder on start-up and it woudl just get stuck. I am more than willing to pull the drive and install a new hard drive, but that might not be the main issue so I am looking for some assistance before the next wipe out.
When it was working for a couple of days, I tried to install OS X Lion, but it would not allow me to do so (some installation failure).
Anyway, should I retire this computer or install a new harddrive....
Any advice is welcome.

a brody, I will take a look. The internal drive works (i.e., the battery, it spins, etc.) it just has a bit of trouble recognizing all CD's so I tend to use the external one since it works consistently. Do you still think this might be the issue? The apple store told me a week after my extended warranty ran out that the drive should be replaced but that an external drive is not an isse, but that was a while back and this problem just started.

Finder does not start after 10.5.2 update

After updating to 10.5.2, Finder will not start up at all. I've repaired permissions several times getting:
ACL found but not expected on "Applications/Utilities".
as well as on "Applications" and "Library".
I've tried to launch finder from terminal. No error messages, nothing. The active window loses focus (as if finder were about to start up) and then it gets focus again.

I am having the same problem. Whenever i remove theUSB cable to my external Hard drive finder starts to work again. Here is a copy of the crash log for finder:

"Windows could not start the offline files service on local computer. Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified"

Using Windows 8.1 Pro on Toshiba Satellite i7 Laptop with 8Gb Ram
After upgrade from Windows 8 Pro to 8.1 Pro, the Offline Files/CSC service refuses to start and gives the error message:
"Windows could not start the offline files service on local computer. Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified"
Before the upgrade, offline files worked fine... how do I re-enable offline files?

I had a similar issue - couldn't make any files available offline.
I found that the offline folder service would not start
This was because the CSC permission were totally screwed. I had to take ownership of each folder and file, one by one, then grant everyone full access.
then delete the full contents of the CSC folder
format the CSC database using the registry fix then reboot
in control panel, disable the offline files, reboot, then re-enable. and now its working :)

For future reference, Safari Plugins are kept in Macintosh HD> Library> Internet Plugins.
To unhide the Library folder, open up Terminal (just type"Terminal" into spotlight) and type:
chflags nohidden ~/Library

Firefox worked briefly but now I get xul cannot find application.ini message and it will not start. Tried reinstalls.

In any case, it's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?

Finder will not start...

Deleted .plist file (remotely via a networked drive) for the Finder.
All happened when dragging an attachment (.zip) from an email to my 10.4.5 Desktop.
The "drag" seems to have put the Finder into an infinite loop (not the same as the Apple Address).
I can't boot from my very stable 10.4.5 partition on my Mac mini.
System restarts but Finder is "stuck" and tries (for hours) to launch Finder.
I've inserted the Install DVD and repaired permissions. No help.
Finder "thinks" it's in control because Desktop screen saver launches (about 30 minutes later).
Disk Utility shows the device as updated and proper.
I've also noticed some strange Safari crashing issues about the same time.
No new software installed (although I am using a copy of Front Row software) not installed for this Mac mini.

The Finder "loop" started as soon as the attachment was dragged to the Desktop.
More confusing was the two other emails from the same sender.
Evidently (or inadvertently) the file may have caused other users issues and the sender had re-sent the attachment in additional follow-up emails.
So. My pitiful Texas dial-up (tin cans and string to the ISP) may have also been an issue.
I never did find any (even partial) download of the on the Desktop. The default download folder also contained no copies.
Weird. But I've had worse experiences.
It took a few restarts and a new user account.
I removed the "You Control" software from my Start Up items (it has a desktop clipboard feature) and was able to start from my older log-in without issue.
I've been a Mac user for quite a few years and usually answer questions in these Discussions pages.
This one had me stumped for more than 4 hours.

Finder folder with question mark, now will not start at all!!!

Hey guys, I was working in Avid and i opened up Quicktime, all of a sudden i got a crash log. So i restarted, upon restart i got the finder folder with the blinking question mark. I tried restarting with the OS9 cd by holding down the C button, no luck there. So i moved onto the next step, resetting the PRAM, no luck there (just sat on black for numerous minutes until i let up, then the folder came back). Then I moved onto resetting th PMU, now it will not start up at all. I restart, and all i see is a black screen, nothing. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.
The machine im workin on is a Powermac G4 (quicksilver), OS9, 1.5 G Ram, machine bases around Avid Editing system

Ok let me clarify this.
1)system crashed restarted and got the folder with the ?
2) tried to boot from the OS 9 CD no luck? it did not boot?
3)reset pram and still the flashing ?
4) Reset the PMU chip and the mac is dead won't start up at all?
a couple of ideas too...
did you press the pmu button more than once?
Check to make sure the power cord is plugged in correctly etc.
Check the Pram battery to see if it might be dead it should read between 3.3v and 3.7v
also try to restart the computer without other devices plugged into it (USB Firewire, keyboard, even monitor.

That is because your apple mobile device service is not started.
The apple mobile device is the thing that allows your phone to communicate with your computer. First thing to try is restarting your computer then plugging your phone in. Check with activity monitor / task manager to see if it is running.

Hi,
You are right, JSPM will not start with server0 down. And server0 will not come up with SAP JVM not updated.
Perhaps you could try a manual update of the SAP JVM as mentioned in the thread:
SAP EHP1 FOR SAP NW CE 7.1 - java doesn't start after updating jvm
