Finder open and frozen

Finder is open and frozen on desktop. Reboooting and unplugging doesn't work, nor does control, option escape. Can't use computer.

Is your clock also frozen? Can you use other applications? What about the Dock?

First off I have a MacBook 10.4.11 and I was just going to instal snow leopard via the $29 disk (not sure if that matters) but my computer kept spitting the disk out, so I figured I needed more memory so after putting my music on a external HD I deleted all of my music. It spit the disk out again and I shut down my computer. Then I turned it back on and logged in like normal, but this time finder opened and crashed, and it keeps doing it.
Now, I have restarted my computer multiple times and I did the apple option p r thing but that didn't help. I managed to create another user and finder does not crash in that account it workd like normal, except when I log in I get this message "The Home Folder for user "d" is not located in the usual place or cannot be accessed. The home or users folder may have been moved or deleted. If the home folder is located on the network, the server may be unavailable temporarirly. If you continue to have problems, see your system administator." Please Help me!

Hi, this sounds like some serious Disk problem or corruption.
From the account that works, open Disk Utility, Verify the Disk, (not Permissions & do not Repair Permissions).
If it needs repair, Your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD/DVD though.

Find open and close smart quotes

Dear scripter,
Here I am trying find whether all the open double smart quotes(") are closed with close double smart quotes("). Here is my small work to find how many open and close quotes.

You'd have to look for unmatched quotes, in this case two cases of two open quotes without an intervening closed quote. This is difficult to script in CS2 because it doesn't have GREP natively and because of footnote problems. In CS3/4 it should be possible. But even then it will work only if you don't have quotes within quotes.

My iPhoto window is open and frozen. How do I close it?

The window is open and will not close, move, or do anything.

I hae the same problem, but find that if I Force Quit, the next time I open iPhoto it needs to repair the library.
This makes me a little nervous, and I'd prefer to know why it hangs, and how to prevent the problem in the first place.

I ve created a website using adobe muse for a client, and due to his hosting company had to covert and upload site to html and use a third party ftp loader FILEZILLA. The site is www.sin-connections.com. This works fine in Safari, but not Firefox. all the interactive accordions are frozen and open, the slideshow banner at the top has disappeared and only the four headings are overlaid each other. the font has gone back to default Helvetica. It looks like any interactiveness has not been accepted, Ive been told that chromium works but not explorer as well. Ive come to the end of my ability of working this out. Can any one help me please. Hi Zak, thank you for your reply, firefox has javascript, and the funny thing is that whilst creating the site in Muse, that I was testing it in Safari, Firefox, Chromium, and IE and it was working fine, hence why I continued the site. It was when I moved over to a third party Web hosting company, EUKHOSTS, and that my client decided to use the linux route that possibly it went all pear shape. The ftp loader on the muse failed to work despite technicians saying there would be no problems, I then had to create http pages and file them in the same folder and use FileZilla to download the site. on Safari the http index page works 100% alongside all the other pages whereas the FIREFOX page has the problem explained to you.
My own site was done using MUSE and I had no problem with it, it works using all kinds of browsers. Not being technically minded I thought Adobe muse would bypass a lot of the technical fiddly work - that you guys seem to be great at !

Accidentally created an On My Mac mailbox Now the mail dialogue box is open and frozen, with a soft pinging sound when I try to close...Can't restart computer until I close Mail, but can't close Mail.

Finder Opens When I Left Click Any Dock Application

When I wake my system up from Sleep, I have a problem that occurs intermittently. When I left click any icon on the dock, ie. Mail, Finder opens and the Mail application is highlighted. Mail does not open. If I double-click on the application in Finder at that point, the application opens just fine. Has anyone else had this problem?
By the way, I have updated to Tiger 10.4.7, but the problem has occured prior to the update.

Yes, I had the same problem and also it was an intermittent problem. I was having trouble with Safari and Mail which I used most often. Sometimes after a while it wouldn't give me the problem but usually I would restart and it would work, but later after my computer was asleep it would give me the problem again. I was even having problems with Safari opening windows in a new tab and not the same window even though it was set to open in the same window.
Solution: Drag the preferences 'plist' for the 'finder', 'dock', and 'desktop' to the desktop and restart. You will have to reset your preferences, but the only one that took any time was the 'dock', because I have a lot of apps there. You might even want to try one at a time to see which one might be the corrupt list. /users/your name/Library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist/
Hope this helps you, I don't think anything is wrong with your mouse or your mouse button settings.

I recently took it into the Genius Bar and they could not find anything wrong. They told me to add more memory, which I did. However, the problem persists. Do you know why my computer would freeze up after the screen has had no activity for just a few minutes? My screen saver is set for an hour so I know this is not the problem.

What kind of documents? Office? iWork? Text Edit? What version?
What settings do you have in regards to power saver and/or screen saver?
For these kinds of system glitches I always recommend installing and running Onyx 'Automation'. If that does not work you should reinstall the offending software, if possible.

Dism - The directory could not be completely unmounted - process explorer can't find open processes and unmounting fails

Hi all,
Installed WAIK on server 2008 R2 64 bit. I'm setting up some boot images, and am having a real hard time getting drivers to integrate into the driver store in the boot images.
What I'm finding is that when adding drivers to the boot image the gui hangs part way through over 50% of the time using Dell 760 or HP NX9420 drivers extracted to pull out the inf files. It's really flakey and will work after a couple of attempts and when the wind is right.
The main problem is that when the process fails the image is left open, so using dism to list mounted images and then umount the open images is the only way to try again.
However, some images won't unmount and the unmount process displays the following:

Rebooting the server clears the lock, but it's really becoming a joke, as I can create a boot image with the drivers, but then going back into add another driver causes the gui to not respond.

Hi all,
had same problem unmounting the wim file using Windows 7 Pro 32bit.
My solution was: Checking for "wrong" Dism.exe
Preparing a WinPE I followed the steps in the help of AIK. I ran the
copype.cmd batch. When it was finished, it said that it added something
to the path environment variable. It was clear that it did so in order
to find the tools needed for the further steps. As long as everything
worked, I didn't give it a second thought. Then I could not unmount the
WIM.
I looked at the PATH variable: NO entry pointed to the directory where
dism.exe was in. (In my case that would have been
     c:\program files\windows aik\tools\x86\servicing
Magically, dism.exe started from everywhere though.
Doing a      dir c:\dism.exe /s /a     showed I had a Dism.exe in
c:\windows\system32, as well. This one has a file size different from
the correct one. Obviously I had started this one (because PATH points
there).
Starting the correct dism.exe let me unmount the WIM without problems.

Downloads used to open after download. NOw they just end up in the download folder and I have to go to the folder to find it and open it. I did not change seettings, maybe an update changed it? I cannot find a way to change this in settings.

There are some keyboard commands (shortcuts) you can use instead of having to go to the Apple menu -
Control-Eject          This brings up the Restart-Sleep-Cancel-Shutdown window.
Command-Option-Eject          This puts the machine to sleep.
Command-Control-Eject          This closes all apps and restarts the machine.
Command-Option-Control-Eject          This closes all apps and shuts the machine down.
