Finder opens on start-up

When I start up my mac mini Os X 10.5.8 the finder window (this is the same window that will open when you click on the Mac smiley face in the dock) opens on my desktop almost every time by itself. I have trashed the Finder preferences file already but it still happens. Also did the trick with the screen saver and background images as suggested in another thread but does not help. Anyone have this problem also and perhaps the answer on how to solve it?

Go to VersionTracker or MacUpdate and get one of several utilities that delete .DS_Store files. Delete all of yours which should solve the problem.

  • Finder opens after start up

Hi to all, when i open my mac, the home folder opens up automatically. this used to be not the case a few days ago. how come? I appreciate any reply.

Hi Niel, that solved my issue. thanks. i would like to take this opportunity to ask you about my other issue which is this bluetooth icon in the menu bar. before i downloaded a third party software that changes icons in menu. when i wanted to change it back to the original, i did find a way from Menu Extras and just double clicked it.
Also i did remove some icons using command>click>hold>drag it to desktop and successfully removed it. I can remove the bluetooth icon but after startup it appears again there. now i have 2 bluetooth icons in the menu bar. one that is original icon, and one that's the other one, the menubar_icon changer thing. i promise i will change anything in my system again.

  • How to find items / programs opening on start up

My MacBook Pro seems to be little slower than expected when I either reboot or start up, could this be that I have items (or many items / programs) trying to open on start up, how or where do I find these items / programs - Thank you

In Preferences / Users and groups, you'll find all apps opening on startup.

  • How to find open orders and open quantity

    Hi abap gurus,
i want to find the open orders with the quantity  means those orders for which we don't have goods issues(and partial deliverys is also possible). i get this scenario but i don't know how to start.
i think i should go to VBUP table and get all the orders
which have overall status GBSTA = 'A' OR 'B'.
So from this i will get all the open orders but i need to find open quantity also .
please tell me how can i find out and  which table do i need to use.

You need to check between delivery line item table as well sales order line item table.
Sales order Line item table : VBAP
Delivery line item table : LIPS
if order qty and delivery qty are same then there is no open qty if not then there is open qty.
    Thanks

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read about your HP Notebook and getting a blank or black screen on startup. Try performing a hard reset.
When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices.
Here is a link to computer won't start for Windows 7. Windows 8 here.

  • Finder doesn't start after admin login

    Hello together,
I have a Lion Server which is manage mainly via ssh on console.
At the moment I have some Kerberos / OpenDirectory issuses und I wanted to login at the Server directly with the local admin account.
When I try to do so, I geht a grey screen and the Finder does not start.
When I then connect via ssh and open the Finder and the Dock with
    open -a Finder
    open -a Dock
I get a GUI but there are still some issues (System Preferences does not work properly and so on).
Can this be due to Kerbereos misconfiguration?
What else could be the reason for this?
    Thanks in advance
    Regards macmartin

This may not be a great help, but it's what I'm in the process of doing to solve the same issue on my mac mini.
I'm booting from the Mac 10.5 install DVD again, then when it's asking me where I'd like to install, I'm going to the disk utility, from the menu at the top.
From there, I've selected my boot disk and (not the partition) and clicked new image. I then saved the image to an external drive.
Once that's finished, I'm going to do an erase an install.
Once the install is complete, I'll mount the dmg file I created and use Migration assistant to get all my settings and programs back.
It's a PITA, but I'm a big believer of wiping things and starting from scratch if an upgrade doesn't go well.
If you like, I'll post back when I'm done to let you know if this worked?

  • Finder opening new Windows despite always open in new Tabs setting.

I have already submitted this to Apple. But wish to open a discussion here, to probe and see, if this issue frustrates other users. It would be nice to get some empirical weight behind my already submitted request.
The Issue: I have already set in Finder »always open in new tabs«. Despite this, when for example one clicks on »view Download in Finder« (Safari), or via a Spotlight-search clicks CMD+R to view a search-result in Finder, a new Finder-Window gets launched. This is really frustrating and quickly clutters up the desktop. Could Apple please fix this, so that »always open in a new tab« really does just this? (Or at the very least, opens a new tab in the last opened Finder-window).
The same irritation ist true for Terminal. I just wished users would be have the option to open everything in the same (e.g. the last opened) window.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • TA24770 Clear Finder "Open With" menu with VMware Fusion 5

    Hi.
I had same problem of duplicate Apps showing on Finder "Open With" contextual menu.
After following instructions on this link http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24770?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US  all Mac applications where OK, but could not see VMware Fusion Virtual Machine applications in Finder contextual menu.
    So follow these steps:
    Shut down virtual machine.
    Open virtual machine settings.
    Go to Default Applications.
    Click "Restore Applications".
    Start virtual machine.
This should reset contextual menu in Finder with the VMware Fusion 5 applications.
    Mac OS X 10.8.3
    VMware Fusion 5.0.3

    Great, post tip, thanks!

  • Finder Open With ...

I have Parallels installed and an XP VM. Parallels has decided that all .sql files should be opened with an MS application and starts the XP VM. If I explicitly change the Open With app in the More Info window it sticks but if I select the Change All option the default reverts back to the Parallels Open With. I have Default Apps in System Preferences and it indicates that my selection should be the default app for .sql files but when I create a new .sql file the Parallels default app is assigned. Is there and exit that Parallels might be using to override the Finder/Open default? Where would such an exit be identified to the system?

Right click one of these files and select Get Info.
In the Get Info window, find the Open With dropdown box and browse to the app you want to be the system default. Then, click the button just below that box that says Change All...
If that does not do it, then VM/XP is taking over the system.

  • Finder does not starts automatically anymore

Hi, i was in the Applications folder and accidentally drag and drop the Finder.app out the app folder in the desktop. So i repaired the mistake and move the Finder back to the app folder but after this incident everytime i startup my mac Finder doesn't start automatically anymore, i have to try open some folder to force it open. What can be happening?

Until you are familiar with the OS, you should consider creating a non-admin user where these things cannot happen accidentally.

  • How can I tell my computer what applications to open upon start up?

How can I tell my computer what applications to open upon start up?

If your Mac is running OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
Select your user account, then click Login Items.
    Do one of the following:
Click Add below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)
If you want to remove an automatic startup item,
Select the name of the item you want to  from opening automatically, then click Delete below the list on the right.

  • How can I stop  Adobe Reader from opening after start up?

I just installed version 9. I remember a question that appeared during installation that was something like "do you want Adobe Reader to open after start up?" I said checked yes because I assumed this meant I wanted it in my StartUp menu. After everything loads and my desktop comes up, the Adobe Reader file opens up showing all the program's files and just sits there. I have to close it each time after start up.
I looked through Preferences, but can't find a way of stopping the program's file window from opening after start up. How can I stop this? Thanks for your help.

    Edit>Preferences
    Under Page Display:
Where it says "Location of referenced files", if it shows "Floppy Disk A:/" clear the box, or choose an alternate location if you can't clear it.
    Also, under Search:
    Click "Purge Cache Contents"

when I start up my mac, everything starts up fine until the finder does its last reload to get ready to use ....

I am very glad I ordered Snow Leopard and that it will arrive soon ::: but in the meantime I would appreciate enormously your workarounds, help or hints to get the finder back to work and use my mac!

  • Finder opens up whenever I OS X restart

for some odd reason, my finder always open whenever my OS X starts up. I've been looking for the function to turn it off, but I can't seem to. Anyone can guide me to the right place?
    Thanks

    Are you sure with restart?
Does it happen when you shut down, then turn back on?
Sometimes when program updates restart, it restarts the computer with finder open, that's the only time I know that the computer starts with the finder window open

  • Finder doesn't start!!

    I have a BIG problem!!
After installing Leopard, the Finder doesn't start! I can't see the icons on the desk, when i click finder icon (on the dock) it doesn't work... when i search something with the spootlight and y click it, ussually finder is open to show the item... it doesn'y open!
Is it any way to reinstall finder? to solve my problem?
    thanks!

The only advice I have is to boot from the Leopard DVD and use the "Disk Utility" application there (in the "Utilities" menu) to fix permissions on the boot drive and check for drive errors. Beyond that I suspect you'd have to reinstall Leopard to get the finder working.
