Finder performance

Many processes in the finder take very long: Opening folders, drag & drop, copying, cutting and pasting work very slow.
For example, moving regular pdf or other files between folders on the same harddrive usually takes more than a minute. The „copying“ tag is active, but there is no progress. It seems that the copying process starts too late, though at regular speed.
Another issue is that when I open folders with many files (e.g. applications), it can take up to 30 seconds to see the content of the window. Sometimes the folder does not even open at all.
These kinds of processes also take up unusual amounts of RAM, increasing fan rpm. The problems arise more frequently since the 10.10. update. I have no adware installed and 20/160 GB free harddisk space.
Any advice is much appreciated!

There is no specific information suggesting your HDD is failing, but you will learn if that's the case when you try to repair the drive.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Portal EHP1 response  inconsistent, where can I find performance data

Currently we are running NW EP EHP1 on unix. We have noticed that when I log into portal screen and iviews paint really fast and then once in a while the screen paint slows to a crawl.
Where can we check portal permformance statistics for iview connecting back to BW, ECC and SCM.
I have noticed that some of the webgui screens in SCM takes a long time and takes a while to render to the end user.
Anyone have an idea where I can check the stats on EP.
    Thanks
    Weyland Yutani

    Dear Weyland Utani,
The following factors can affect performance in the portal layer:
    1. Overhead due to authentication mechanisms and the consequent delay in login
    2. Time taken to connect with a back end
    3. Resources consumed due to logging
    4. Time taken to load home page
    5. Design of Java iViews
The following factors can affect performance in the operating system layer:
    1. Memory
    2. CPU consumption
    3. Network bandwidth
    4. Java Virtual Machine (JVM)
    5. The kernel
In this first step, you can ask the following questions to help you understand the problem:
    a) Is the problem related to a single user?
    b) Does the problem occur during heavy load conditions?
    c) Does the problem occur during specific times of the day or all the time?
    d) Does the problem occur only during a specific activity such as accessing a backend
    system or a database?
    e) Is the problem reproducible?
    f) Is the problem simply poor performance or is it also accompanied by incorrect
    results?
    g) Does the problem occur only during logon?
    h) Does the problem occur only during the first use?
    i) When did this problem start?
    j) Did anything change in the system, operating system, patches, or the application
before or after the problem occurred?
Moreover, you might want to check the size of the log files The log file size should not increase more than 1MB
under load. Also whether any error is being logged because of connectivity issues to any of the backend systems such as
the content management server, database, or the SAP system. Check the Windows Event Log for clues.
On the lighter side, in some cases, poor performance may be due to caching on the browser or improper proxy settings. Clearing the browser cache and accessing the portal again may be of help.
Depending on the severity level set, the log files are created. Following are the different severity levels that can be set in increasing order:
    u2022 DEBUG
    u2022 PATH
    u2022 INFO
    u2022 WARNING
    u2022 ERROR
    u2022 FATAL
For example, if the severity level is set at INFO, the log files include messages at the levels of DEBUG, PATH, and INFO. However, the messages at severity levels WARNING, ERROR, and FATAL are not created. The online log viewer is available in the Visual Administrator as a Log Viewer service.

  • Connecting between Macs through Finder - performance

I have 2 Macs running OS X 10.6.4, "Red" and "Blue", on the same home network. Connecting from "Blue" to "Red" through finder (either for screen sharing or just browsing shared folders) is quick--takes just a couple seconds. Connecting from "Red" to "Blue" takes 30-60 seconds.
Any ideas on what might be causing this?
    Thanks!

    Thanks,
I dont think that is the issue - but trying it out made me realise that the difference between the "connect to server" and "connect as" functionality is probably MobileMe. Although I have back to my mac enabled on the work machine - it is behind a company firewall - which is probably restricting some of the back to my mac functionality.
I dont know why the "connect to server" seems to bypass this though. Unless the vnc port is open on the firewall (doubtfull) or maybe there is some invisible tunnelling going on.

    Hello ardmore,
    >>After running it, it displays two line information on the screen. But where is the location to store these information? I want to look at it.
    You could performance counter monitor:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749249.aspx
Or see it in the Visual Studio directly:
In the Server Explore of Visual Studio, expand the Servers, find Performance Counters, you could see the MyCategory counter and other system counters:

  • Very slow (glacial) performance after 10.4.10 update

Updated Mac mini 1.66GHz last night via Software Update. Initially got extremely slow reboot and finder performance. Tried many things ie safe boot, repair permissions, reset pram, and even reinstall via Combo Update but all to no avail. It has been taking over 5 minutes to just boot up to Finder. Finder operations are really slow, but application response is nearly as fast as pre-update.
So, I do a backup (just in case) and plan to go back to 10.4.9. I normally backup weekly to an extra internal drive in my G5 Dual 2.0 via wireless and usually takes about 30 to 45 min. However, this backup takes over 18 hours!
I have perused these forums and others, but have not noticed this slow issue occurring. Any hints on how to speed back up?

    Hello janala:
You might try trashing the preference file (com.apple.finder.plist) and restarting. Also, I would certainly run repair disk from your software install DVD.

  • Finder Right Click Woes - Intel iMAC 20" Core 2 Duo (NEW)

Okay, I was hoping someone can check this for me on their new iMAC. I have found an issue where if I right click (or control click) three or more times in a row on the desktop or any other finder window, finder performs a relaunch. I am hoping that its just a bug with the new iMAC. But, either way its rather annoying.
    System Information:
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.4.10 (8R4031)
    Kernel Version: Darwin 8.10.3
    Boot Volume: Macintosh HD
    Model Name: Mac
    Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM71.007A.B00
    SMC Version: 1.20f4
Thanks if anyone can assist. I have been on the phone with MAC support now for a little more than three hours. Next step from them is reload the OS. But, this is a factory installation and I havent had time to do much but copy stuff from my other MACs.
Thanks for any advise or if you have the same issue.
    Best regards,
    Jason

    Yo Dave:
After performing the re-installation (per technical supports suggestion) every thing worked fine. Then looking at your post I really wanted to know what started this whole mess in the first place. So, I started StuffIt Expander and after the initialization of the application the issue came up again.
Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction. You were correct. I had installed StuffIt Expander Deluxe 11.02 (which is the latest version). This application installs a contextual menu in the /Library/Contextual Menu folder. The file is called StuffitCM.plugin. By removing this file the issue is now gone.
Stuffit still works now even with this file removed. So, all is good.
Again, Dave thank you for your insight.

  • Airport Extreme Shared USB Hard Drive Performance Issues

I just picked up a new Air Extreme and attached a new Western Digital Passport via USB powered hub (have printer as well). All is working well, however, I am finding performance (especially copying files from my computer to the network HD) to be quite slow. For example, I was trying to copy a 3GB folder with about 1000 files and the copy dialog indicates that it will take about 30 hours. I was able to copy directly to the HD when plugged into computer's USB in a matter of minutes. When I try to download same folder from the net drive to my laptop, it takes about 1 hour. Note: I have Comcast Cable hi-speed so not sure how much is related to this knowing that they do have different download/upload speeds.
I would appreciate any feedback, tips and advice on optimizing performance of my USB drive when shared over the network. Thanks.

How do you have your hard drive formatted? If you are using a Western Digital Passport, you will want to create a separate Mac partition so that you can copy very large files (+4GB). By default, I believe it is FAT32. I had to do this (Mac partition) with my back up drive because I have VMWare Fusion images that easily exceed this.
The new network drive I attached is also a Western Digital, but I didn't reformat it (yet) as I knew I wasn't going to have large files, but I am wondering if maybe I should do this. Unfortunately, then my Windows machines would not be able to read it easily.

  • Active Table Logging T000 performance impact

    Hi fellow SAP experts,
I need some advice on system performance impact when switching on Table Logging for T000 - configuration in production please?
We have decided to turn on Table Logging for auditing purposes, only allowing developer config in production following a volume of evidence being supplied.
I need to know how much this activation is going to impact the performance of the companies production environments, how much storage, memory, performance, etc. this function is going to consume and how much of the above consumables I need to cater for now and in the future?
We have a Dual Track environment, BAU want to switch on Table Logging for fix on fail, I want to swich it on for Project deliveries.
Please advise, with referencing if possible?
    Thank you kindly
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
There has been a constant debate whether table logging affects the System performance, especially in Produciton environment. Please see my comments below :
    1) To turn on logging for table T000, you will have to activate the parameter rec/client, with values for one client or all the clients in the System depending on your requirement.
    2) This parameter setting will not only log changes to T000, but also for over 28000 tables.
    3) But these are customizing tables which usually contain a relatively small amount of data which is changed occasionally.
    4) After activating, if you suddenly find performance issues, you can check which tables are causing issues via transaction SCU3.
    5) You can go to transaction SE13 and deactivate logging for a table, if you find too many entries for any particular table in SCU3.
So, logging tables doesn't necessarily impact performance. Hope this helps. Please refer to SAP Note-608835 related to this.
    Best Regards,
    Savitha

  • Why is my finder so slow after upgrading?

I came from OS Snow Leopard on a fairly basic Macbook Pro 13 inch model, and upgraded to Lion.  I use Finder a lot, and something I noticed immediately was how SLOW finder is now in OS Lion.  Does anyone else seem to be having this problem?  When I use the space-bar to preview something it can take up to 10 seconds for me to load a preview, where it used to be instantaenous in Snow Leopard.  I also have problems moving around in finder, like going from Downloads to Desktop, there's a 5 second delay minimum.  What could be causing this issue?  Is there any solution?  Or am I just stuck with a slow Lion?

    Your Noodleship:
I would say your Lion Finder performance is far from typical.
A few things I would consider if this were happening to me:
    * Is the system still indexing files? (Spotlight?)
    * Is there some other RAM hog wallowing in your system?
    * Is there some other CPU hog wallowing in your system?
The first can be answered by clicking on the spotlight symbol.
The other two can be investigated via Activity Monitor.

  • T3s Performance Metrics / indicators (WL 10.3.0.6)

Hi Oracle Community, I am searching high and low, to njo avail, where can I find performance indicators using t3 vs. t3s connectivity for application communication.  I heard there was a ~25-30% performance increase using t3s, I would love to see how this is justified.

I used YourKit on a project about a year ago. I've used a few other profilers and this one was the simplest to install, configure, and use in my opinion. I was doing basic CPU profiling of a WebLogic Portal application on my machine using YourKit within about a few hours of learning of the existence of YourKit. I used it to find performance bottlenecks and it did the job.

  • Trash and System Performance

Need to know for company SOP reasons whether or not keeping thousands of files in the trash for weeks affects mac performance in any way. I always remember from OS 7 and up that you wanted to keep the trash relatively clean for best finder performance. I remember also having issues running maintenance on mac's with a large number of trash files that were not yet deleted. Are there any links that you can provide on the this subject. Thanks in advance.

Unless the hard drive is almost full, the amount of files stored on it, whether they are in the trash or not, does not affect performance.
