Finder periodically stalls

Problem: After installing the OS X 10.7.2 update:
1.   The Finder periodically stalls (i.e. the color wheel).  Essentially, the machine freezes up.  To recover I must use the power button to force shutdown, and then restart.  Problem occurs in both standard and administrator accounts.  The Finder stalls during various operations, such as deleting trash, and transferring files from an internal drive to an external drive and vice versa,.
2.  A similar problem occurs with SAFARI Version 5.1.2 (7534.52.7) -- For example, Safari periodically stalls when attempting to save page as pdf file, or executing a back page.
COMPUTER:  MacPro OS:  OS X 10.7.2   (MacOro 4.1,  dual 2.26  GHz Quad-core,  Memory:  24 GB).
NOTE:  I do not have these problems with another MacPro running OS X 10.6.8 on same ethernet / wireless network  (MacPro 1.1, dual 2.66 GHz dual-core, memory: 16 GB) .
Appreciate  any recommendations.

I've been having the same issue with my 27" iMac.
Typically, it is triggered while using Safari, Mail, iTunes, or even just the Finder.  Only a hard restart gets my machine running again.
I went through all of the basic troubleshooting steps (zapping PRAM, disc utility, repairing permissions, etc) and I even resorted to doing a re-install of Lion from a Time Machine back up, and also re-installed Lion itself.  Nothing helped.
I'll also note that in my case, activity monitor wasn't reporting any issues when the spinning beach ball would appear. I have tons of free hard drive space, and my iMac passes hardware tests with flying colours.
One of my google searches led me to someone else with a similar problem who had uninstalled Flash Player from their system, and reported that the problem went away.  I did the same, and so far so good.  I certainly have gone much longer without the spinning beach ball than I did before removing the Flash player.  As well, Safari is noticably faster at loading up pages now.
EDIT:  It must have been coincidence, because shortly after I wrote this post, the problem came back!  It looks like Flash wasn't the culprit.
The only info I can add to the puzzle is that all of my recent stalls have happened when using/switching to iTunes.

  • Finder Search Stalls Out

My Finder stalls on the "searching" pinwheel anytime I try to search for something, and it never gives me any results. Spotlight works fine, other programs (such as mail) search fine, I just can't search with the Finder. Any ideas?

    Hi Barry,
I did that but nothing's changed, even after using Onyx as some suggested. Spotlight acts like it's not even bothering to search for my search terms and the finder's Command-F search panel pops out soon as I type in more than two letters. Interestingly, they work just fine on two other accounts on the same machine.
Does that give you any clues?
    Thanks for helping!

  • InStr search for comma finds period?

    Hello,
I am working on a macro in Excel 2007 to find commas in a string.
    This:
    commaAt = (Len(inp) - InStr(1, strTmp, ",", vbTextCompare))
Returns the location of commas AND periods.
Is there a way to get InStr to find just commas?
I think this may be connected to the mixed use of commas and periods as decimal points.
Curiously, on the worksheet FIND works on only commas with A8 being the string to parse.
    RIGHT(A8,(LEN(A8)FIND(",",A8,1)))
    Thanks

    Hello,
Your question answered my problem.  Yikes I was blind. And was seeing what I wanted in Len(inp).
    That has to be: Len(strTmp)
    inp = "AZ,00000.00,4,aaaaaaaaaaa,bbbbbbbbbbb,cccccccccccc,ddddddddddd,00003,X,X,X,X,X,00<cr><lf>"
I am trimming off comma fields from left to right in a for loop. And the first trim value is 3 which coincidentally matches ".00" the second pass trimmed the correct number of ascii but from the wrong starting point.
I am very sorry to have missed that and posted. I should have gone to bed earlier.
    Thank you.

  • Finder periodically plagued with Spinning Beach Ball of Death

SBBOD = Spinning Beach Ball of Death
Could someone who understands MacOS X internals please explain to me why the finder needs to wait for an external Firewire drive to spin up to:
    1. Open an app from the doc. (sbbod until the FW drive spins up)
    2. Quit an app via right clicking the dock icon of the app. (shows 'Application not Responding' until FW drive spins up then
    'quit' is the available choice)
    3. Get a running program to respond. (sbbod then app responds as usual when FW drive spins up)
Let me set the scene. I do not have 'put drives to sleep' in energy saver. Spotlight is configured to ignore all of my external volumes. None of my apps use the external volumes for scratch or anything else. I rarely if ever directly save to an external volume from any application. I cannot change the behavior of the FW drive going into Stand-By mode (I've checked with Seagate and the feature is not changeable via firmware or dip-switch/jumper settings)
My only thought is poor filesystem buffer cache management. Problem is even that doesn't make sense. If I haven't read from or written to the external drives there shouldn't be ANY in memory buffers associated with the now in stand-by state firewire drive.
The SBBOD usually only takes 5-10 seconds to go away and Finder behavior to return to normal. I know it sounds 'petty' but it definitely is a flaw in what is supposed to be (and usually is) a very responsive GUI. I've experienced this annoying behavior with the standard Apple apps (Mail, Address Book, iCal, iTunes etc) and my 3rd party apps (Photoshop CS3, Excel, Word, Cisco VPN client. I'm thinking about writing a crontab entry to 'touch' the FW drive every few minutes to keep it spun up as a workaround.
Running 10.6.1 and hoping Apple would have gotten it right with this release.

AFAIK, the Seagate bare HDs don't have that limitation. At least the 750 GB SATA, ST3750640AS, one doesn't have the standby mode. Neither do any in that family. Spec sheet at http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=Barracuda7200.10_SATA_750.3GB&vgnextoid=138697c102ede010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD&locale=en-GB

  • Finder periodically using waaayyyyy too much memory

Since upgrading to 10.5.8 the Finder strikes me as being a bit odd at times. Sometimes it is using a lot of cpu cycles such as 50-80% for no apparent reason that I can find – not copying anything, etc. In trying to sus this out when I notice my machine working harder than I think it should be, I used Activity Monitor to look at the Finder processes. Under stats it showed a huge number of faults, I'm talking here in the 300 million range with Unix calls in the same rough range. Under Memory it showed 16,777,216.00TB under Shared Memory. This then changed to 00 and the same number popped up under Virtual Private, then in both this and Private, then disappeared, only to popup again shortly thereafter.
I've done a couple of restarts, done the permissions, etc. and it isn't always this way. But something seems amiss and I can't replicate it on demand.
Any ideas of help someone can offer?
    Thanks!

    Hi abrody;

Yes I did and in this instance the problem was solved.
When it first started happening I figured that because of all my configuration changes resulting from the new drive that Spotlight indexes were updating or something similar.
Probably all is fine but I'm noticing everything at the moment since I've made major changes to the MB Pro.

  • Firefox 12 STILL consumes too much memory and periodically stalls

    1. This has gone on actually since at least Firefox 8 for many of us. With Windows 7 32 or 64bit, AND we are told OTHER OS's as well, Firefox 12 IS consuming too much memory!
When FF 12 memory consumption "hits" 800MB on a 8 GB machine, and continues to slowly climb, FF 12 has code or other problems.
    2. ALSO, Firefox 12 under many circumstances, is slowing to a crawl, especially in opening windows and tabs.
NOTHING we do, inspect with memory tools, etc. seems to point to any "culprits" or guide the way to researching and potentially solving these problems...and they ARE problems within Firefox 12, and likely earlier versions.
    TIME TO CLEAR THE AIR?
These are problems being seen by others, with or without any (totally blanked out/disabled) Add-On's and even most Plug-In's being disabled or removed, both for testing the problems sen in FF 12.
There IS a problem, or more than one, here, and it's not isolated or "just refer to this checklist" solvable.
There's problems, perhaps memory leaks and other agenda IN THE CODE.
We users need to stop being poo-poo'ed and "pampered" by needless communications that do nothing to truly address the problems.

I encountered this after the memory leak was mentioned as pat of a slowdown issue with an add-on that has been in use as long as I've been using Firefox (All-in one sidebar -AIOS). After a relatively short length of time under both Firefox 11 and 12 it starts to slow down. Sub menus take more than a second to show up when the parent menu is clicked, links take more than a second to activate, pages don't load as quickly. (I have a 30Mbps downstream internet connection that I test regularly, and consistently shows between 25 and 30MBps speeds from multiple sites throughout the US. It's NOT my download speed.)
In looking for explanations I saw at least one mention of a memory Leak.
So I decided to test this for myself. I first removed AIOS, then re-started Firefox and just left it running. I did nothing except minimize and restore it a few times. About an hour later the memory used by FF had gone from a reasonable 42K or so, to over 200K.
I tested again after uninstalling ALL my add-ons and plug ins. The same thing happened again.
This is NOT simply high memory use. Which I interpret as a particular tasks or process using more memory than it maybe should.
This is quite clearly a memory leak. Nothing was being executed, nothing was running with Firefox, and no pages were loaded during this time. But he use memory just steadily grew.
This is clearly a new issues since I did NOT have this problem when I was using Firefox 8. If I can find an install of that I'm going back to it.
If not I'll settle for the ESR mentioned here. If nothing else it seems to have a slower leak.
I never did like the new version number / rapid release schedule. Mostly because growing version numbers at that rate made no real sense to me as a developer myself. But also because speed of release for new features should not be the target but quality. I think we can see that this has clearly fallen by the wayside.
I only wish I thought there was a viable alternative.

  • Please Anybody  Explain me about Periodic Processing mettods

    Hi All,
Under Schduler Tab of Schduler Screen, you will find Periodic Processing, Under this we will find two options... Those are...
    1) Do Not Cancel Job
    2) Cancel Job After X Runs
Can anybody explain me briefly about these two.......?
    Regards,
    Kiran Telkar

    Hi Kiran,
When you choose Periodic processing.....the system needs to know if the Job that you are scheduling should be run only X number of times or should be run periodically till the user decides to stop it from running any more.
    eg :
    1) You have scheduled an Infopack with - periodic , and hourly with option Do not cancel job.
The infopackage would run everyhour , everyday until the user does not require this load anymore.
    2) you have scheduled the infopack with - periodic,  hourly with option Cancel Job after 3 runs.
Now the infopack will run hourly only 3 times after which the Job will not longer be scheduled to run anymore and the Job will be removed from periodic scheduling after the 3rd run.
    Hope this is clear.
    Regards,
    Praveen.

  • MIRO - Posting to special periods

    Hi all,
Is it possible to post MIRO documents in special periods.I am not finding Period field in MIRO screen. in FI transactions it is there.
    please help
    sunoj

    Hi,
Special Periods can be used only in FI module.  We can not use Special Periods in MM module.
One more thing, once a period is closed in MM module, we can neither reopen the closed period nor post any transactions in that period.
    Regards,
    Srinivas

  • When connected via USB, my Ipod Classic 160GB mounts as a disc drive, then changes to a white drive.  When iTunes automatically opens, it crashes trying to mount and/ or sync.  When it times out, my only choice is to restore, but that doesn't fix problem.

I'm running OS 10.6.8 on my 3.06 GHz iMac Intel Core 2 Duo.   I recently upgraded to iTunes 10.5.2.  I'm not sure when the trouble started but I attempted a restore when the iPod would not play correctly.  It would start to play a file and get stuck on 0 seconds.  If I put the iPod on shufle, it will stall on 0 seconds for 15 seconds or so and then move on to the next track and stall again and so on.   Seemingly randomly, it will play a few tracks but eventually start skipping again.  This will continue until the battery is depleted which is fairly quick since the drive is constantly spinning.
My 160GB iPod Classic after restore attempts now is up to date with 2.0.4. and of course, nothing works as it should and I would say the skipping issue is worse than ever.
When I connect with any of three USB connectors, the iPod mounts to the desktop as a grey/silver disk drive picon exactly like the Macintosh HD picon.   Then Finder will stall for a few minutes- spinning pinwheel.  Somehow, the dock is never affected and I am able to open other applications like Safari or tab through open windows- just no action on the desktop.  Eventually, iTunes automatically opens and Finder becomes responsive again.  At this point the grey drive picon on the desktop becomes a white drive mount picon, but the iPod does not mount in iTunes, yet.  At some point, the iPod attempts to sync, iTunes crashes with the spinning pinwheel and eventually times out and I am prompted to restore the iPod again.  Once restored,  the iPod properly mounts under devices in iTunes and, as I have done this several times, even occasionally changes to the regular iPod picon on the desktop.
I have restored several times going as far a completely deleting iTunes from my iMac, downloading the latest directly from Apple.com, and attempting to restore again, but to no avail.
I have even used the disk utility to verify and/or repair my Macintosh HD and iPod.
It seems lots of folks are going through this ordeal.  Has anyone had any success in fixing the issue, even if only temporarily?

one more detail, after a restore, when I attempt to reload music to the ipod, if I try and move, say, 20 files, the transfer seems to work as it should but then stalls on the last file.  Eventually, the status will change to "Updates Files on (my ipod)" a and suggests the iPod is syncing  even though I have the auto sync feature turned off.
This process eventually works itself out, and seems to take longer relative to the number of files I attempt to transfer.   Once done, howver, if I try and eject and dismount the iPod, iTunes stalls with the spinning pinwheel and I am warned that the iPod is syncing again with the spinning candy cane status bar.     Eventually thisd works itself out and the iPod dismounts from iTunes and the desktop and eventually the iPod is free to disconnect.
Then if I try and play the music I just transfered, the iPod says there is no music loaded.
    Ideas?

  • Enabling Installation of CS3 and CS4 products that will not install on Windows 7 64Bit.

Adobe installers are not known for their helpful or forgiving ways & I have more than once had to reinstall Windows when installation of CS3 and CS4 products has failed with patently inscrutable errors.
The background to the current issue that I was attempting to install PS CS4 on a W7 system which already had CS CS3 installed. The CS4 installer threw up inscrutable messages indicating  that the installation could not proceed and to contact Adobe (they are joking right ? Their phone & web support is notoriously UN-helpful).
After reading through threads suggesting that I uninstall CS3, apply CS3 and CS4 cleaning scripts I was in exactly same position I have found myself in on least 2 occasions with WinXP. By this time I couldn't event get CS CS3 to reinstall!
Then I decided to review the event log and found a number of installer events thrown up by the Adobe installers resembling "Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\xxxxxxxx".
I tracked down this very helpful solution which allowed me to change the registry permissions on the parent key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\ Components and propagate the new permissions down to the child keys.
    http://www.okino.com/conv/changing_windows_registry_permissions.htm.
My advice is to follow instructions for "A More All-Encompassing Solution" and propagate the permissions right down to all the child keys as I could see a number of separate adobe installer errors in the event log. Also note the instruction to change the Owner from 'System' to 'Administrators' in Advanced settings. This is necessary in order for the Permissions change to be accepted and replace all the child object permissions.
As with most registry changes good advice to backup your registry hive first (although I didn't; by this time I was already expecting to have to reinstall Windows) and restart your system after making the registry changes before attempting to install  / reinstall CS3 or CS4 products.
Hope this solution works as well for others as it did for me as the Adobe support on this issue has been next to useless.
[P.S. Q: Did you hear the joke about the guy who worked on product installation at Adobe rocking up at job interview with 'Adobe Installation Project Team' on his Resume? A: That that is the joke! If you wanted another job in installation development you would hardly admit to experience at Adobe ;)]

My apologies John I didn't realize that I was addressing the official custodian of Photoshop.
Incidentally my advice is intended for others in a similar situation who find themselves stalled during installation and otherwise contemplating a re-installation of Windows. I believe this would be obvious to most forum participants who had actually read my original post.

  • Mouse Lag

I just bought a Logitech DiNovo Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. They work fine, but the mouse periodically "stalls" and movement lags. What is going on here? Is this a known OS X issue?

I'm betting this is not the root cause, but it won't hurt to ask: Are you using any other wireless devices (like a wireless router or some wireless phones) that may be running on the same frequency as the mouse? Because of the way bluetooth uses frequency hopping it's usually the case that bluetooth would walk over the router rather than the other way around, but maybe worth checking.

  • I cannot open final cut X

I cannot open final cut. I got a message saying my HD was full and I needed to delete files in order to continue, so I did but since then I have not been able to open Final cut x. All I get is the mac loading wheel. Any ideas why I can't open it?

Thanks again for all your help Tom,
Have now trashed and then reinstalled the application, it is opening. It now stalls when it is trying to load my previous projects.
I realise now what I did wrong, I deleted files from 'All my files' that fcpx is now trying to find, that is why it was not opening to begin with.
How do I get fcpx to open with all the files that it can find, without stalling while trying to find projects that it cant find?
