Finder question

I have been trying to learn about "Finder" on my iMac and have a question on items that show up on the left side.
When I read or watching  videos about "Finder", I notice all examples show a catagory for "Downloads", "Pictures", "Music", or Moives.  However, my "Finder" does not have those items.
Do I have a setting wrong or how do I get these items to show up on my left side of "Finder"
I have an iMac running the lastest 3.2 ghz intel core i3 with OSX 10.8.5
Thanks for your help.

Or else from the Finder preferences choose the ones you want to have in the sidebar

    LizMaddock,
you can reset the input source to Spanish by selecting the Keyboard pane of System Preferences, selecting the Input Sources tab, and pressing the “+” button in the lower-left corner to select one of the Spanish input sources. The “Spanish – ISO” input source is most similar to the physical Spanish keyboard layout.

  • Two Finder questions

    Two Finder questions:
    1. Is there a way to get the status bar to show something more useful than how many files I have selected and how much space is left on a volume? It would be nice if it could tell me something like file size or the combined size of the selected items. Which brings me to...
    2. How can I 'Get info' for multiple items as a combined total? Since the status bar won't tell me, this would be the only other reasonable way to find out.
I keep ending up in a situation where I know how much space is available on a memory stick, yet I don't know how many files I can put on it because I have no way of seeing how much space the selected files take up.
Thanks for putting up with the noob questions.
    -Travis

    Excellent, one down.
I also noticed that if you press ctrl instead of option, you get 'Get Summary Info' which results in the exact same window, but with a nicer title bar. Very important, that is.
Thank you, that helps a lot.
Any ideas on the status bar? Having come from Windows I'm used to it dynamically showing a lot of useful information. As it is, only telling me how many items there are and how much space there is on the volume, I may just nix it if it can't do more. A 'tweak' perhaps that's found more behind the scenes than in an option window somewhere?
Thanks again, the forums here have made the transition very pleasant.

  • Finder question: "right size this column"

Finder question: how do I get the "right size this column" feature to work automatically each time I open Finder or move between columns?  The column widths reset each time I close/open Finder or move between columns.

    Finder columns:
Option dragging the resize widget || will resize all columns, wide or narrow, all the same and seems to stick.
    Otherwise:
Double clicking on the resize widget || will expand that column to show all.
Option double click on the resize widget || will temporarily resize all columns to the largest width needed..
The last option may help but it isn't permanent.

  • Finder Questions / Wish List

So far so good on Leopard. "Back to my Mac" and screen sharing for me are worth the cost of admission alone. Here are a few finder related questions, perhaps wish list items:
    1. Stacks - I'm not a big fan yet.. In Tiger I had my applications folder in the dock. Right clicking on it would bring up a scrollable column containing all of my apps. Now I have to click on the stack, and then click on the "xx more in finder" icon to get to any app that starts with a letter greater than "s." Is there a way to scroll stacks?
    2. Quick view - awesome stuff.. Select your files, hit the space bar, and see what you have. Very nice and a real time saver. However, if I select a batch of files to view I can't trash them individually from the quick view. Is there a keyboard shortcut for this? I could use coverflow but quick view just feels more 'precise'
    3. Is there any way to make my dock at the bottom of the screen look like it does on the side? I keep my dock very small at the bottom of the screen and really have a hard time seeing what apps are open (the little dot underneath the app blends in with the white '3D' dock tray.
    4. Is anyone else experiencing an odd problem where you can't select anything on your desktop? This has happened twice to me now and is quite annoying. Can access things from the finder when this glitch takes effect but can't on the desktop.
    -Lon

    Wish List:
Graphic UI seems a bit over board, simple and understated are easier to work with.
Get ride of the ugly transparent menu bar.
Get ride of the ugly 3D dock.
Get ride of the new window colors, they are too dark.
Get ride of the ugly start up screen (purple/star field). again simple and understated are easier to work with.
Bring back hierarchy menu selection from the dock.

  • Finder question mark icon

A few weeks ago I noticed a question mark icon embedded in the top of my finder window, on my laptop.
It is still there and is also now showing on my imac as well.
Could this be a virus, has anyone seen this b4?

    glosshog,
An additional thought, for what it's worth...
You may have seen a pointer to an application or item which at one time was added, perhaps inadvertently, to your Finder toolbar. At some later point the item was deleted and thereafter the pointer had nothing to point to because the original could not be found.
The condition is easily reproducible. Choose an item on your hard drive -- a text file, image, small 3rd-party utility, AppleScript, e.g. -- and duplicate it. Open a Finder window and drag the duplicate item to the Finder toolbar (it might take a bit of coaxing for the item to find a position where it will stick; look for the green "+" sign). Once added, find the duplicate item you just created and send it to the Trash. And then empty the Trash. Open a new Finder window and you should see a question mark identical to the one seen in your screen shot. To remove the question mark -- or any toolbar item for that matter -- click and hold on the item with the command key pressed down, and drag the item from the toolbar until you see it go "poof."

  • Simple "Find" question -- How to find values in cells with formulas?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I don't find the answer. I have a table with values that are all computed via complex formulas. I want to FIND, say, when the value is 19. I can't find a way to do it: If I use the "find" command and type 19, the program finds when 19 is written INSIDE the formulas, e. g., it finds the cell where a formula is thus defined:
    =Table Correct Responses :: A19
but does NOT find the cell with VALUE 19.
Tried different syntax combinations without success. Any idea?
    Cheers,
    l.

    My two cents:
    Select the entire table.
    Cells Inspector.
Define a rule like the one I uses here.
It will highlight the cells whose value matches the condition.

  • Noobie Finder question?

Have searched without success in the forums.....How do you "move" a file or folder.
I need to move my iphoto folder to the /user/shared directory so I can make all the photos available to all my mac users.
I'm a noobie at Macs so forgive my ignorance. I only see a copy option?
    Thx for all help:P

This is one of those seemingly simple questions... that isn't.
Moving a folder in OS X is simple enough - you drag it from one place to another. You can move your iPhoto library to a different location quite simply like this.
You can get iPhoto to find a library in a non-standard location (such as /Users/shared) by holding down the Option key while launching iPhoto.
The problem comes with granting the sufficient permissions to let both users read and write to the shared library.
In the older version of OS X it was fairly simple - Got Info on the library folder and changed permission (to give group Everyone read-write, if you were feeling a bit sloppy). With Leopard, Access Control Lists (ACLs) are also used for determining permissions and frankly, I'm not up to snuff on how these work with iPhoto. Perhaps someone with a bigger brain can help, or this may be useful:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050904072808460
FWIW, Apple recommends avoiding permissions problems by moving the shared library to a shared disk ( which ignores permissions)

  • Lion, Finder question

    Finder
In Lion, I don't like the way finder lists "Today"
"Yesterday",   "previous 30 days"  when searching,I like the way it use to display my images/ files. Kind of just  in order of modified, etc etc …….plenty of way in view options  I  only want one  section, not those others in the window. Is there a way to change that? If you know what I mean?

Choose "Show View Options" from the View menu. Uncheck the "Use relative dates" item and click the "Use as Defaults" button.
Note - In OS versions prior to Lion, this preference would always revert back to using relative dates. With Lion it appears to remain set.

  • Finder questions (changing file icons, moving files, home/e)

    Hello all!
I got my 17" Intel iMac just two days ago. Gorgeous machine, feeling very comfortable. I switched from Linux and there are a few things I can't figure out on my own, I'd appreciate if someone anmswers these simple questions.
    1. How can I change the icon which represents a certain file type?
    2. How can I "move" the files from a, say, removable drive to my local drive? When I drag the files it shows "+" in a circle and copies the card. But i want to move the files from it, not copy. Command+X and Command+V don't work.
    3. I am used to that home/end buttons bring to the beginning/end of a line, but in OS X they bring to the top/bottom of the page. Makes editing documents very hard. Is there a way to change it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Artemiy.

    Artemiy
PHP and CSS files are associated with XCode but the icon is plain whiteOK, I can see the problem. I just created a small file of each type, and both acquired the TextWrangler icon. I then changed the .php to "Open with" Xcode, but this did not change the icon. The only way I could change it was to select another editor (SubEthaEdit) – so you may want to experiment here. Of course, it would then be a pain to have to know two editors!
How do you move the files from a removable drive to HDDI don't do this that often, but if I had a lot I would be inclined to put them in a folder and move that.
Well, this happens everywhere actually.Probably for GUI editors, since they would use the same OS text-handling features. But sometimes an editor will have extra controls.

  • "Shared" In Finder Question

    Hello All-
I used to show "shared" in my Finder window until recently. How do I get that back? I do have other computers on my network that I used to see, now I don't. What happened? Any idea how I can get this up and showing again? TIA!!

    Hi
I am having the same problem of not seeing shared at all in the Finder - even though I have ticked all the correct boxes in preferences. I too have tried everything suggested here and it still does not work. I cannot find anything using Browse - in fact nothing shows under the network. I have tried via computer name and using the vnc number - no use!
It worked until a few days ago - then I changed my ISP and thought it could be that!
However, it seems a more general - and recent problem.
Any more suggestions would be REALLY welcome!

Dijkstra (and A*), doesn't in theory compute the shortest path between a source and a destination, but between a source and all the nodes. On those algorithms, once you've tested a node you know 1) it's distance to the source, 2) where the shortest path came from, so you cannot recompute a shortest path for a node.
Here you should test the node that has the lowest "distance from src + heuristic", so probably one of the node adjacent to the violets.

  • Moving files in finder question

I am a recent switcher and I would like to be able to right click on a file and select CUT rather than copy so that I can then got to where I want the file and just paste it in.
Or / and I would like to add to the context sensitive menu a MOVE TO (whatever folder I designate)
so that I can click on a file and have in the choices a move to command...
If someone can tell me how to do that I would be grateful
    Thanks

I created an Automator action to do that thing.
    1. Open Automator, and select Finder in the Library pane
    2. Drag Get Selected Finder items into the workflow pane
    3. Drag Move Finder Items into the workflow--I left it at the default of Desktop, but you can choose another starting point
    4. I then hit the disclosure triangle for Options and checked Show Action When Run, Show Entire Action, and checked the To box
    5. I then did Save as Plugin... and selected Plug-in for Finder
Now when I right click (control click) on an item in the Finder, and go to the Automator section of the Contextual Menu I can select the Move workflow. I can then either move the item to the default set above, or click the disclosure triangle and select Other to navigate to a different location.
Or as macjack pointed out just drag to a new location using two Finder windows and, if one is on a different drive, command-drag.
