Finder Quits When Showing Image Preview

Since my upgrade to Leopard, Finder frequently quits.
For example: In frame view: I open a folder with many photos, before even looking at the frame-view preview (in the right), Finder quits.
Similarly, this happens when I'm changing views from List to Frame-View to Quick-View, etc.
This mainly happens with images (of all sizes.)
Any ideas?

Where did the images come from? Perchance out of Adobe's image management program? Did you add any info to them? There is a serious incompatiblity going on between image info formats from Adobe and the Finder. One hopes this will get fixed with the 10.5.2 update. See this thread, among many:

  • Finder doesn't show image dimensions

    Hi!
I have a problem with image dimensions in Finder. Finder doesn't show image dimension info in preview column and Get Info window. But when I open in Preview app I can see dimensions in Get Info window. How to solve this problem. If I want to sort images by dimension, I can't do that. Because Finder doesn't know image dimensions. You can see images below.

That's because the Finder is a file manager and works from file metadata. The data you're seeking is about the file contents. You need to use a Photo Manager or Browser.
There is someone who can sort images by dimensions and see dimensions in list view. Also if Finder will not show image dimensions, why give me "Dimensions" and "Resolution" option to select in list view.

Launch a Finder window. Press command+J, and set Show Item Info. Now the image dimensions will show below each image icon. If it is a movie, then the duration of the movie is shown.
I have done this. But doesn't show information.

  • Bridge does not show image previews anymore on one of my drives

Bridge isn't showing image previews on one of my drives. I have tried resetting the preferences as well as deleting the cache to no avail.

I don't believe so, because it operates as expected in finder. It's only bridge that doesn't seem to want to create the thumbnails. I went to the thread you posted, Robert, but unfortunately I'm not on Windows and don't see any "online" or "offline" options.
Transporter is not a cloud service. It's actually a local hardware device, so it's more a network drive than anything else.

  • After installing Mountain Lion finder quits when I open desktop folder - why?

After installing Mountain Lion, finder quits when I open desktop folders.  Not all folders..  I does it to new ones.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • LR3: "Find file" when locating images error?

When moving images from a portable drive that i use when on the road, i wish to copy them to my harddrive back at home (copy, not "drag & drop move" from within LR3 library modeule, as i wish to keep them on the portable drive).   Within LR2 i would then unplug the portable drive, use "Show in Finder" and then "Fnd Image" (ensuring that "Locate Nearby missing images" is on) and that then makes the connection to all of the images in that folder on the main drive at home.
The only problem is that so far in LR3, this system of finding individual images does not appear to be working - i can click all the way thorugh to the image on the central home drive, but when clicked, it does not make that connection.
"Find folder" works ok, but not if you have images from seperate occasions in there, then it can't work; only "Find Image".
Has the process changed for LR3?  Any suggestions please as a 10 second job, now requires 1+ hour to copy between folders, drag and dropping then re-copying.
    Thanks

That's a bug in LR 3.0 that was fixed in LR 3.2RC, as far as I can tell.
The only problem is that so far in LR3, this system of finding individual images does not appear to be working - i can click all the way thorugh to the image on the central home drive, but when clicked, it does not make that connection.
The workaround is to click the question mark icon on the thumbnail instead if clicking "Show in Finder" from the pop-up menu. This way you avoid the bug.
Also, why not try installing LR 3.2 RC to check if it solves the problem when clicking "Show in Finder" and subsequently "Find Image".

  • My finder quits when accessing my Drobo External Hard Drive iMac Dual Core 24"

My Finder Quits Every time I access my External Drobo 8TB Firewire Drive. I have several other FireWire Drives online with it and have no problem with them. This happened soon after the 10.7.2 update. I have a lot of files on this drive. Could it be the number of files that is causing the problem? Is there a Limit onnumber of folders on the surface of a drive? Please help if you can, I am desperate to preserve my software. But I need to do something soon, Or else I will have to just reformat the drive so I can use it again. I don't really want to do that.
Thanks in advance for any comments or cures.
    Rev

I had the same problem but only after I upgraded to Lion. I could see the files on my external drive on other Macs using older software. It seems that Lion wasn't seeing old files on the external drive. So we accessed the files on a Mac using Snow Leopard, copied all the files into one new folder on the same external hard drive and now they're there on Lion. Problem solved! I hope this helps

  • Finder quits when draging a web photo into a folder??

folders go blank and re-appear or the finder quits and i have to click restore folders....never had this problem before i upgraded to mavericks.....any help would be welcomed....thanks

This sounds like a Lion bug...File it with Apple...
Can you use a tool other than the Finder to do the backup? Perhaps you could use an Applescript Droplet or something.
Then you could try some other tool (perhaps 'ditto') to do the copy. Worst case you can copy the folder to a temporary location on the hard drive and then copy that copy to the Solaris server...

  • "Safari cannot find file" when I use "Preview in Safari" in Dreamweaver CS4

I am experiencing problems with AFP network users working in Dreamweaver when they try to view pages with "Preview in Safari" when Safari is already running. If Safari is closed and launches from scratch, then pages display correctly. This is isolated to network users only. When logged in locally, files display correctly whether Safari is running or not.
I tested this same scenario in Firefox and it worked correctly each time. Hear are results from both Safari and Firefox for an AFP network user working on a file saved in their home directory. All four attempts were made from Dreamweaver using the "Preview in browser" feature:
From Safari when it is already running:
    file:///Users/millersr/Documents/DW%20CIB%20Site/lesson03/santorini.html
From Safari when it launched from scratch:
    file:///Network/Servers/macserver.crhs.chesterfield.k12.sc.us/Volumes/User%20RAI D/Users/millersr/Documents/DW%20CIB%20Site/lesson03/santorini.html
From Firefox when it is already running:
    file:///Network/Servers/macserver.crhs.chesterfield.k12.sc.us/Volumes/User%20RAI D/Users/millersr/Documents/DW%20CIB%20Site/lesson03/santorini.html
From Firefox when launched from scratch:
    file:///Network/Servers/macserver.crhs.chesterfield.k12.sc.us/Volumes/User%20RAI D/Users/millersr/Documents/DW%20CIB%20Site/lesson03/santorini.html
To make a long story short, when Safari is running the full path is not sent to Safari. We are using DW CS4 (but this also happened with DW CS3).
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed (including reseting PSE as the external editor) and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.

  • Neither mouseover/hover nor click on Photos/Year view shows image preview zoom. Am I missing something?

I have seen video reviews of a cursor hover working, and Apple's Photos website says to click on a thumbnail to show a zoomed preview. Neither method is working to show previews of a tiny Year view photo. If I click, the entire view enlarges, not just the individual photo.
I apparently converted my library to Photos from iPhoto on the last update. Not a lot of warning there. I have chosen to save images on my iMac, and to share across devices in iCloud. I have paid my fee to get the proper amount of storage in iCloud. I have begun the process of uploading my 30,000+ photo library to iCloud. It is chugging all my network resources, so have occasionally paused that process. ~25,000 to go.
The only Photos/Preferences/General setting I believe I have changed is to uncheck "summarize photos" to see all the photos in a given year.
I am using the Apple trackpad.
Do I need to wait for something magical to happen or is there a setting or something else I need to do to see zoom previews by moving cursor over them?

Clicking and holding down on a tiny thumbnail for a moment will show a small preview, but once I release the holding down, the view changes to Moments, and no direct way back.
That is not a very efficient workflow.  I am seeing this with "Summarise" disabled.

  • Lion, Finder quits when copying a folder with idlk files (indesign cs4)

I have a network volume on solaris which I backup folders to the local desktop. if I drag the folder to the desktop in lion, it gives permission issues once it gets to the idlk file, the finder resets, disconnects the network drive and does not copy. If i use snow leopard, the finder works fine and skips the the .idlk from all these guys having open files on the server. This is disruptive for my backups because often users have files open. How do i skip or ignore the .idlk files when I am backing up entire directories?

This sounds like a Lion bug...File it with Apple...

  • Finder crashes when uploading Images to Wordpress and Facebook

    Hi All,
This is a bit od a long description, but I wanted it to be specifec and detailed as I've tried a couple of searches through the discussions and none of the other solutions suggested have worked so far.
I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a 2.2Ghz Core I7 MBP with 8GB of RAM.
I recently set up my own website and installed Wordpress. As it is a photography website, it involves a lot of image uploads, however every time I try to use the uploader and select my files through the web form, the browser hangs and so does the Finder. This behavior is the same across Chrome, Firefox and Safari.
The only way to get things rolling is to do a hard reset (using the power button). A friend of mine has faced the same issue in his system both with Wordpress and Facebook... And the two of us a stumped.
Here are some of the possible solutions I've tried :
    Disable Intego Firewall
    Disable Little Snitch
Repairing disk permissions through disk utility
Use Onyx to clear user and system caches
My suspicions lie with java asI believe both those sites use Java based uplod applets (sure about facebook, not sure about wordpress)
As a last resort, I've gone to the extent of installing windows on a Paralles Vm and using the browser there to perform the upload, but this has resulted in a crash once and the finder becoming unresponsive.
Any light you can share on the matter would be most appreciated.
If there are any logs I need to post here, please let me know how I'd get to them as I'm not too good with the Mac OS system utilities.
    Thanks.
    Brian

Ok took this one step further and swapped out the 8GB upgrade back to the 4GB that originally came with my laptop. This didnt solve the problem so I dont think this is related to the hardware.
Here's one more thing I noticed though. The crash doesnt happen if you upload files the moment you turn on the PC. But after about 15 minutes of usage if I try to upload the file... system down.
It also baffles me that finder gets taken down along with the browser......
Anyone with a similar issue  / solution ?
