Finder Recent Folders

Just started making the most out of my computer this week by using terminal. I was wondering if there was a way (prefrences or terminal) to eliminate Finder's (menubar>) Go> Recent Folders option.

System Preferences > General > Number of recent items:  set to none.
You might have to go back to Finder > Go Recent Folder and select clear list.

    I agree it’s different from the previous versions. To find your recent folders in Excel 2013, please click
    File->Open->Computer, you will find all your recent folders listed over there.

  • Increase number of items in Menu Go Recent Folders?

    I know that there are lots of ways to find a recently opened folder (e.g. Spotlight, DefaultFolder, etc.), but I was wondering whether there is a way (by tweaking the system preferences via Terminal?) so that I could increase the number of folders beyond the default 10 that are listed in the drop down menu (Finder > Menu > Go > Recent Folders)?
    IAW... I'd like to simply be able to access more recently opened folders using the Go menu drop down.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Kappy... thanks for responding.
    What you suggested does increase the "Recent ITEMS" listings but it does not change the menubar > Go > Recent Folders listings.
    I go through so many files each day that it would be an incredibly long list even when looking for something in a few folders.
    The advantage of the Go > Recent Folders is that if I was able to list 20-30 folders... it would just speed things up for me (with the way I work... not saying this would necessarily be the best way for everyone).
    Sure Spotlight can find recent folders for me, but it just takes too many steps... especially with the columns' bug. Where it won't even allow you to select/expand columns until you first click on an opened window, or Command-N (to open another window), or click on the Desktop and then click on the column header in the Search window... before the Search window will allow you to work with the columns. Very time consuming when you are working with a huge number of lookups.
    Again... thanks.

  • Automatic clean of Recent Folders list in Finder's "Go" menu: how I did it

    Hi everybody. I just would like to share with you the trick I have found to automatically clean the "Recent Folders" list in Finder's "Go" menu.
    It costed me some work but eventually it worked.
    I wanted it to run at shutdown. If it were executed at startup it would need an extra command (killall Finder) to work properly.
    This is how I got it:
    Open the terminal and do the followings:
    cd /etc/
    sudo nano rc.shutdown.local
    insert your sudo password
    into the nano editor write the following lines:
    #!/bin/bash
    cd /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/
    defaults delete /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder FXRecentFolders
    chown YourUserName:YourGroup com.apple.finder.plist
    Close (ctrl+x) and save (y and return)
    And now some explanations.
    the first instruction (#!/bin/bash) is just needed if you have an empty or not-existing rc.shutdown.localfile otherwise it should be just there.
    YourUserName is obviously the name of your user whose Finder's preference file you want to edit.
    YourGroup is the group your user belongs to. Usually it is 'staff'.
    the chown is needed because all this commands are executed by the script as root. So the "defaults delete" command changes the ownership of the com.apple.finder.plist to root:wheel, resulting in the loss of your Finder's preferences at reboot.
    For the same reason the "defaults" command specify the exact path to the domain to be edited (without the .plist part as usual).
    The rc.shutdown.local does not need to be set as executable. It works as it is created by nano but please remember to reboot twice after any change in order to see the effects.
    I hope it could be clear enough and somehow useful.
    Please feel free to add comment, questions or improvement suggestion.
    Thanks

    Alright I have windows 7 and I tried downloading the new iPhone software at least 8 times now and each time the download completes, but then promps me that the connection has timed out. I am certain that it is not my internet connection because I have used several different networks. I was wondering if anyone had any idea how to change my internet options if that is the problem. I turned off all of my firewalls since I could not find a way to allow itunes to pass through the firewall even though it seems to be allowed. Thanks to anyone that can help.

    I made sure the 'Show Icon Preview' box was checked.  This is about all I can do, really, Frank, as i don't know enough about the workings of these machines to start fiddling about.
    Strangely the images show as previews in some folders, yet not in others, even though they come from the same sources (my camera and my phone).

  • Options for Go - Recent folders in Finder

    Is there a way of setting the default value to zero, or disable the Recent Folders menu under the Go menu in Finder?
    Richard

    Clarification -- is there a way of automatically making no folders appear in the Recent Folders menu, so that I don't have to hit Clear Menu - i.e. clearing the menu happens automatically. It's not a big deal really, but I just wondered.
    Thanks,

  • Jaguar.8 - how to clear menu Recent Folders

    searched and found similar question but no answer -
    how to clear menu Recent Folders under Go in Finder toolbar?
    (no option as in subsequent OSX.)
    While at this - how to add item (Utilities folder) to Go menu?
    Is this what Favorites is intended for?
    Tiger.10 is so much easier on both counts, but haven't learnt for this earlier OSX's finder.
    Thanks in advance,

    Use a tool such as the Property List Editor or TextWrangler to check that application's plist file.

  • Go Recent Folders opens in new window, not the current one

    I noticed with Mavericks, when I use Finder>Go>Recent Folders, it opens a new window instead of changing the contents of the currently open window.
    Is there a way to get it to work the way it used to?
    Also, I thought you could open folders in new tabs automatically.  I have to right click for that option.
    In Finder Preferences, I have tried Open folders in tabs instead of new windows both turned on & off.  Nothing changes.
    thanks in advance

    Surebrec,
    '''Update:''' I found this, which you might want to try out before continuing reading: http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-stop-firefox-stealing-window-focus.htm
    Basically that would mean the reverse for you.
    If that didn't work:
    Does this problem appear without you having many applications running at the same time and/or if you have pinned a lot of applications to your Taskbar in Wondows 7?
    Some users have reported that this problem manifests itself if the row of icons in the Taskbar simply can't make room for any icons expanding (i.e. new windows in for instance Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer).
    If so, you might want to take a look at: http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems

  • Recent folders in "GO" menu:  how to increase the amount it remembers.

    On my computer it remembers the last 10 folders I opened. Is there a way of increasing this that anybody knows of? Lets say 20.
    Thanks.

    Jim Thank you

    Now I understand what you mean. You expect to see a separate entry for Folders
    in the Sys.Pref.>Number of Recent Items.
    Not really, I like to change the amount of folders it remembers under 'GO'. K Shaffer made the first reference to the settings being in System Preference> Appearance, but they are not. this are the settings for Apple Symbol>Appearance. Not the 'GO' pull down, 5 to the right from the Apple Symbol.
    That makes sense now. But, if you open all the folders in say HD,
    I did just now open 20 folders.
    they will be listed in the Go tab>Recent Folders.
    No only 10, and if I open 20 other ones it lists the last 10.
    SO, although it isn't mentioned in Sys,Prefs. it does include Folders. I just tried it. That can as already mentioned, change up to 50.
    all 3 settings in System Preference> Appearance for
    -Applications
    -Documents
    -Servers
    are set to 30 and this is what influences the settings in the Apple menu, there I see the last 30 -Applications -Documents-Servers. but nothing changes in the in the 'GO' menu>Recent Folders. Max there is still 10.
    So my question is am I stupid? or are we not communicating? or is your OS deferent? I tried it in 10.4 and 10.5 and I can not find a setting that influences it.
    Looking forward to solving this one.

  • Help with shell script: Find Recently Modified Directories

    I'm trying to do something that appears to be beyond my capacity to figure out on my own. I'm hoping that someone more skilled than I at scripting can help.
    Challenge
    I'm trying to build a script that finds directories and gzips each individually, but only if they've been modified within the last, say, 7 days.
    Context
    The idea is to create a set of gzipped directories that can then be uploaded to a remote server for backup and archival purposes. Since the parent directory is 8+ GB in size, and 99% of the contents does not change from week to week, I want to identify, zip, and upload only the directories that have been modified recently. (Uploading is outside the scope of this script).
    *Cut to the Chase*
    In plain english, my script might look like:
    1) find sub-folders contained within "~/Sites/" that have been modified within the last 7 days; do not go more than 1 level deep (i.e., return only the top level folders within ~/Sites/)
    2) loop through the returned list and gzip each directory
    I'm hoping that this can be done easily. Automator doesn't provide filters that are granular enough to do this, so I'm thinking bash is the way to go. Any help would be most appreciated, and will be rewarded with all kinds of good karma. =)
    -Steve

    OK, here is an untested and possibly syntactically incorrect Perl script:
    #!/usr/bin/perl -w
    use strict;
    my $siteDir = "$ENV{HOME}/Sites";
    # Get all the top-level contents of the Sites directory.
    opendir(SITES, $siteDir) or die "Couldn't open $siteDir folder.
    my @siteContents = readdir SITES;
    closedir SITES;
    # Reset my script startup time to be 7 days ago.
    $^T = time - (6060*247);
    # Now find all the modified directories since then.
    my @modifiedSiteDirs = grep { -d "$siteDir/$_" and -M "$siteDir/$_" < 7 } @siteDirs;
    foreach my $modifiedSiteDir (@modifiedSiteDirs)
    system qq{tar zcf "$modifiedSiteDir.tar.gz" $modifiedSiteDir};
    Actually, I did just test it with only a printout instead of executing tar and it works. I'm not sure of the path to tar on MacOS X. You may have to add that.

  • Listing recent folders

    I recently upgraded to a Mac Book Pro from a Power Book G4. When I looked for saved files using various software (Photoshop, MS Word and others) on my Powerbook I would get a list of the 10 most recent FOLDERS. Now with my Mac Book Pro I only get a list of 5 most recent FOLDERS. I have looked in the preferences on the software programs to see where to change this, but they don't have a way to do this that I could find (I can change the number of recent files, but not folders). I'm guessing since it works the same on all software that it is some setting on my Mac Book Pro, but when I look through the system preferences I could not find anything to change this. How do I set it so my Mac list 10 previous folders and not 5?
    Thanks!
    Pat

    I tried that and it did not work. It only had documents, applications and servers listed. It did not have folders. The documents, applications and servers all were set to 20. I messed with them to see it would have any affect on the folder number and it did not. Any other ideas?
    Thanks,
    Pat

  • Where to find recently downloaded pictures

    where to find recently downloaded pictures

    Downloaded from where? E-mail? The internet? A digital camera?
    Pictures from your digital camera are most likely in iPhoto.
    Pictures from the internet will be wherever you set them to be saved. If you are unsure, let us know what browser you are using and I can tell you the default download location. Are you using Safari? Firefox? Something else?

  • "Can't find recent OpenSSL libcrypto" error when configuring openssh 4.3p2

    This is being done on a new install of Solaris 9 (patched) with Studio 11 installed. I complied openssl 0.9.8a with the following:
    config --prefix=/usr/local shared
    openssl builds fine and the output of openssl version is Openssl 0.9.8a.
    When I try and run the configure script with openssh I get the can't find recent Openssl error before the configure script can continue. The config.log reports the following:
    "ld: fatal: library -lcrypto not found"
    At first I thought the problem was I had to explictly define where the libcrypto file was located so I modified the configure script and edited the -lcrypto line to point to /usr/local/lib/libcrypto.so. This didn't help. I have tried defining --with-ssl-dir but that doesn't help either.
    Anyone ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi
    Not very pretty, and I don't know if autotools will undo it behind your back, but setting
    LD_OPTIONS="-R/usr/local/lib"
    might do the trick.

  • Bridge 'move to' dialogue 'recent folders'.

    In CS4 Bridge 3.0.0.0.464 when you right click on a photo there is the option to 'move to'.
    This gives the options of a greyed out 'recent folders' 10 other folder locations and 'choose folder.....'.
    How can I make the folder location 'stick' in the 10 other folders section?
    Where do these 10 folations come from?

    that list shows the folders that you recently visited which is why it changes constantly. A workaround would be to use the Favorites panel to fill it up with the folders you want to move stuff to and then just drag your images to those folders
