Finder refreshes every 8 seconds
Hello there
I have a very annoying problem with my Finder.
It refreshes itself every 8 seconds.
So If I press CMD-SHIFT-N to create a new folder and start typing a name, finder automatically 'presses' ENTER after 8 seconds. If I did not type the complete foldername, the name will be what I typed within the 8 seconds.
I am running 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro.
I looked everywhere but only found some old Stuffit AVR topics, which I do not have installed.
Anyone any ideas?
Regards
mattijn, amsterdam, holland
It sound like you finder is quitting or crashing and restarting itself which it would try to do after either of those events. Here's some suggestions to try:
1. Repair disk with Disk Utility.
2. Log into another account and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't then it's something local to your account which needs to be found. If it does it's something system wide.
3. Boot in safe mode and log into your account. See if the problem exists under these conditions. If it does this indicates it is either still local to your account or something more global.
4. You might also want to check for anything "suspicious" in the following places:
Your accounts login items.
~/Library/LaunchAgents (i.e., LaunchAgents in your home directory)
/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/StartupItems

Finder Refreshing every 15 seconds
Hi Guys
I really need urgent help! I am in Africa delivering a presentation for the next few days and my 2011 MBP has just started doing the finder thing! I cannot find anyway to stop it. I do not have google drive and no matter what, it keeps doing it - making my presentation useless due to the flicking back every 15 seconds.
Luckily, in safe mode it does not do it, so I know I can get tomorrow out of the way!
Is there a fix for this highly frustrating problem?
Scott-ryan,
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Follow the procedure in Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode.
Then find the com.apple.finder.plist in (yourusername)Library/Preferences Folder, move it to the Desktop and restart.
Let us know what happens.

Desktop Refreshes Every 30 Seconds
Help!
My desktop is refreshing every 30 seconds. I have set it to a static image after briefly trying to use the "change picture" feature. I have tried rebooting and restarting.
This is frustrating because when the desktop refreshes it bumps me off of whatever application am using. I have to find the application click on it, to bring it up and work for 30 seconds before starting the process over again. It also closes any open finder window and interrupts burning of any CD... I have created wonderful sets of coasters.I am experiencing the same problem. Ever since I downloaded the updates a week ago my finder has been crashing.
Stuffit AVR is off and has been off. I have rebuilt my permissions with the disk utility in safe mode. Nothing has worked so far. Below is the log from my machine.

Desktop aliases and open folders refresh every 60 seconds or so
Since this morning's boot, all my desktop aliases and open folders refresh every 60 seconds or so
How to stop this very irritating phenomenon, please?Wooah, yeah I think that's done it. Also seems to have fixed it for my friend using CS6. Thanks for the help. I guess I was right with my every 10 minutes estimate then, it was exactly 10 minutes
Surprised it locks it up so bad though. Maybe there should be a warning message if it regularly takes longer than a few seconds telling you what it was and how to disable it.
Thanks,
Mike. -
10.9.2 - Finder crashes every 5 seconds!!!
I have a MacPro with 24GB of RAM, 6 core Intel Xeon CPU, 2012 tower.
After the OSX 10.9.2 upgrade I had issues with the display port output on my graphics card. I resolved that issue temporerilly by using DVI-D and HDMI for both my monitors.
Today, however, I have an even WORSE fault!
FINDER CRASHES LITERALLY EVERY 5 SECONDS.
Pardon my French but I am SERIOUSLY ****** OFF NOW.
Every Finder crash log says exactly the same thing:
EXC_BAD_ACCESS
At first I thought it may be faulty RAM, but I have tried every RAM stick in isolation and it changes nothing. I have also went back down to one monitor and, again, it changed NOTHING. I have no extensions installed; this is 100% RAW Finder.app
What can I do to fix this without having to reinstall OSX?
Thank You.I did not say reinstall the OS. I think your boot HDD is failing. Disk utility (in your applications/utility folder) can verify the smart status of the drive. You can access disk utility from your install discs, an install USB, or a bootable clone.
You need an alternative boot source (not time machine). The problem you face is the exact reason many of us make install USBs, have install DVDs, or bootable clones.
If you have none of these, at least try and boot into recovery (hold command R at the chime). If your HDD is bad this won't help but if it is a file structure error then maybe you can access disk utility this way. -
Finder crashes every 2 seconds
hey there...
i've been having trouble with my computer tonight. my finder crashes literally every two seconds. if i try to open an application it crashes as soon as the finder does. i can't figure out anyway around this and seem to be trapped in an endless cycle of my finder opening and closing.

Finder restarts every third second - cant use my computer!
Hi
I have a really big problem that makes it impossible for me to use my computer. Since yesterday Finder has been restarting about every third second which makes the icons on the desktop dissapear and appear and also the upper menu is doing the same.
I have a video clip of it so you can see the problem.
http://www.dsmovies.se/ovrigt/problem2.mov
Please help me, I really need to be able to use my computer again.
Really appreaciate all the help I can get.
ThanksBarney-15E wrote:
There is some info here. Try creating a new user, if possible and log into that. If all is well, there is something wrong with your previous user account. If it still fails, then you've got a system-wide problem.
Third-party Contextual menus sometimes cause this problem. Look in yourUser/Library/Contextual Menu Items/ and move anything to the desktop. Restart and see if that helps. If it does, try placing them back one at a time until you find the culprit.
Good idea but hard to do if you only have 2 or 3 seconds before Finder relaunches.
Try this:
1. Restart computer and hold Command and S. The Command key usually has the Apple logo on it. This will boot you to Single User Mode which will be a black screen with lots of white text.
+Note about Single User Mode and these instructions+: Type everything exactly as instructed (including spaces), keeping letters lowercase or capitals as the appear on screen or in these instructions. In the instructions, when you see <RETURN>, instead of typing it out, you want to press the Return key on your keyboard. In the instructions if you see yourusername then you will need to type your username as you saw it on the screen.
2. Type the following:
mount -uw / <RETURN>
ls /Users <RETURN>
Note: The last command will show a list of the different account folders. Find the one that has your name. This is your username.
cd /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences <RETURN>
mv com.apple.Finder.plist com.apple.Finder.plist.old <RETURN>
reboot <RETURN>
Note: At this point your computer should restart. Log in how ever you normally do and see if the same thing is happening. If not, stop here. Otherwise repeat step 1 and then go directly to step 3 below.
3. Type the following:
mount -uw / <RETURN>
mv "/Users/yourusername/Library/Contextual Menu Items" "/Users/yourusername/Library/Contextual Menu Items.old" <RETURN>
Note: You may get a message saying the folder doesn't exist. If so, ignore it.
mv "/Library/Contextual Menu Items" "/Library/Contextual Menu Items.old" <RETURN>
reboot <RETURN>
Let the computer restart and things should be working after that. -
Address Book: Refreshing Every Few Seconds. . .
... I have a address book count of 1,132 cards, whenever am attempting to use these contacts; Address Book keeps refreshing like every 30-sec or so... greatly slowing down my work flow; often having to wait for it to catch up ........ help!!!
smiles..
Anthony... not doing anything unusual, Sharing is (???) and Contacts are all local: first notice this occurrence when simply editing / adding new contacts to the address book; in the middle of editing each card, it just (what appears to be) refreshes each card, by card, by card; all 1000+ of them ... it also does this during any kind of interaction with Address book, ie: adding / deleting / viewing / searching ... doesn’t matter what you are doing; if interacting with address book, it stops responding (losing command of the app), and appears to update each and every card; then later comes back to your control... this happens like every few seconds during your session with Address Book.

Finder crashes every 60 seconds
Hi there
I've been going lots of googling the past couple of days but haven't turned up a solution yet...
Finder crashes and relaunches every minute or so. "Remove the .plugin files and log out/in again" I hear you say. Done, no joy. Tried removing com.apple.Finder.plist - no joy. I had Stuffit v10 on here, but it's now been completely nuked. Still no biscuit. Console log shows this:

Machine is g4-1.5GHz powerbook, 1.25GB RAM, 100GB disk, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. The error happens when the kb + mouse are switched off too. This seems to have only started happening when I installed the 2006/07 security update. I tried reinstalling that, and then reinstalling 10.4.8 over the top of that, but no cigar.
Any ideas, anyone?

Finder restart every two seconds! After install security update 2011-005
After install security update 2011-005, I rebot my computer and every seemed normal, until I saw that started to restart the finder.
Help me! please.
PD: I try to delete the famous "com.apple.finder.plist" but I can't found them.
Is a MacBook Pro 13'' mid 2009 OS X Lion (10.7.1)You may be able to repair this with 10.4.8 PPC Combo Update
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

I use the same plug-ins i always have, with the exception of faster fox. I got the plug in off of c-net. The first thing I did was disable that plug in. I do remember at one point i used to have a plug in that allowed you to set the refresh intervals. I don't remember which is was though as I got rid of it a long time ago. I have checked every option I can think of to no avail..please help.
If you have an infected system, Firefox will get infected no matter how many times you reset it. Refer to a specialized forum to clear the malware from your system.
* https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=9573
If you haven't disabled the malware and phishing protection features, and you have a good and up-to-date anti-virus, then visiting web sites shouldn't be an issue. Installing questionable software on the other hand allows malware to do anything on your system.

MacBook Screen Flashes and Refreshes every 2 seconds after autoupdate
My daughter installed updates last nite (she thinks itunes, safari, quicktime?) and now her computer will turn on but the display keeps refreshing and will not completely display all her usual icons. I tried resetting the PRAM (Control Command P R) and safe boot (shift) and no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks

Any suggestions ?
This usually means someone has tinkered with the contents of /Library/Receipts & removed the ".pkg" or ".bom" items in it that tell the permissions repair procedure what the correct permissions should be. (See About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature for the full story.)
As a rule, users should not tinker with anything in /Library or System/Library unless they know exactly what they are doing (or at least have a good backup to recover from the problems this can cause). Because the missing files may mean someone has done more tampering than just removing them, I suggest for your situation that you do consider an Archive & Install, followed by running Software Update to get all current updates into the system.
BTW, the earlier advice from nerowolfe was not about doing an install from the DVD. As he explained, after you boot from the DVD & choose your language, immediately go to the Utilities menu at the top of the screen & choose "Disk Utility" from its menu choices. The installer application will be replaced with Disk Utility, which allows you to run its checks & repairs prior to or instead of installing the OS.
I am suggesting here that you do go ahead with the install because of the potential problems with the existing one, but for other times you should know about the utilities you can run from the DVD without doing an install. -
NAL Icons refreshing every 30 seconds.. it's back
According to TID 3453520 this was fixed in SP1 IR3a and I haven't seen
the problem since.. However since applying SP1IR4HP4, it started again.
I bumped the version # on a force run app after adding an msp to the
patches, and now I'm seeing it again.
Has anyone else seen this in the latest revision? On 6/30/2010 8:35 PM, Patrick Farrell wrote:

Ok so this is odd. It appears to be my flash plugin (firefox) installer
app. I checked 2 of the machines and I had the app set to force run.
It was still sitting in application explorer and it had not run. I
deleted the app, recreated it.. Same thing. It didn't run. The flash
activex installed ran just fine.
The path is t:\Applications\Adobe\Flash Plugin\Install Flash Player 10
Plugin.exe with a parameter of -install
The working ocx installer is t:\Applications\Adobe\Flash Plugin\Install
Flash Player 10 ActiveX.exe
So on a hunch I enclosed the entire thing in "" and now it works just fine.
I did not have to put quotes (although I did add them later) on the
activex plugin to get it to work.
Not sure what gives there. I'll have to see Monday if anyone reports
the issue, but given that the app was "stuck" I'm thinking that's it. -
Crashdump every 30 seconds after update
I did the latest software update last night and now my computer pauses and switches to the finder about every thirty seconds and all the icons on the desktop disappear and come back quickly. I checked the activity monitor and "crashdump" pops up when this happens and then disappears quickly too. Anyone know what this might be?
It was stuffit, I read on another thread. Thanks!!

Finder & Icons Refreshing (Flashing) every 60 seconds
This just started today. The open finder windows and desktop icons momentarily disappera and then reapper every 60 seconds. It's as if I am force quitting every 60 seconds, but I'm not. Any idea why this would be and how to fix? I've already rebooted, and then I cleared finder prefs and force quit the finder. Still it does this every 60 seconds (I actually timed it, it's every 60 seconds exactly)
Wow! I agree with LA_Hockey_Dad! Thanks, so much, Soapmuseum! I came right to your post and fixed the problem! Quickest resolution to a computer problem I've ever had!
