Finder requires password deleting files
Hey guys, finder requires password when I try to delete my files. I have read some of the suggestions on how to fix this online. That includes
1. Open up Terminal and type in 'sudo chown yourusernamehere .Trash' and the other one is
2. Click on the Get Info on the hardrive and change the username to read and write
and apparently, none of these worked for me. I'm not sure if I'm doing it wrongly or what but yeaah, but problem is not fixed yet. Help!
1. Triple-click the line below to select it:
~/.Trash
2. Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Show Info
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
3. The dialog should show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section. If that's not what it shows, click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and enter your password when prompted. Use the plus- and minus-sign buttons to give yourself Read & Write access and "everyone" No Access. Delete any other entries in the access list.
4. In the General section, uncheck the box marked Locked if it's checked.
5. From the action menu (gear icon) at the bottom of the dialog, select Apply to enclosed items and confirm.
6. Close the Info window and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

Just updated my MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion. Prior to the update the computer was working fine; I was able to delete files in the customary manner. After updating, however,I am required to enter my password to complete the action. I am uning Lightroom 5 and I cannot delete images from within that application at all even though it should work. I can create folders and move them . . . I believe the only problem I have is as stated. Any advice as to where to go from here would be appreciated . . .. .

Can't find "Require Password" checkbox when creating network on MBP
I'm trying to create a network as I've often done on a MacBook Pro.
When I bring up the window to create the network, there is no "Require Password" checkbox.
Does anyone know how to require a password please? I'm trying to create a little network for just my MBP, AppleTV and iPhone so that I run presentations via Airplay in a conference room, and I don't want everyone in the room logging onto my Mac. Thanks in advance.
MBP Retina 13" late 2013. Yosemite 10.10.2OK I've managed to solve this problem but there's no rhyme or reason why what I did had any effect. I dug out the old printer and noticed that it was getting a 10.x IP address whereas the 710 was getting a 168.x IP address... that should have been my first clue, but I wasn't thinking. Nevertheless, I had no idea why it was getting that sort of IP address.
So, I went through the manual set up (again) on the printer, and instead of searching for the SSID, I typed it in manually. Now it gets a 10.x IP address and it's showing up on my network.
In the end, there is something screwy with the way the network software on the printer is handling its network search feature. Definitely an Epson thing, not Apple. -
Finder 'Requires Password' for every single file deletion...
Had to make a quick fix today with an Archive & Install...
One remaining annoyance is that Finder prompts for password for almost every single file (using the ommand + Delete method).
Any thoughts?Hello v:
Welcome to Apple discussions.
If the keychain is the problem (I do not know from your post), the article below will amplify what to do to fix it.

Deleting folders/files causes the password pop up interface to appear, does not seem to matter where the file/folder is. After deleting, it should appear in the trash, but does not. Moving files is not affected, with the exception of moving files into Trash. This did not happen in the morning.
Accessing ~/.Trash gives following message "The folder “.Trash” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents." .Trash is hidden, and i can't view its permission from the Get info page.
I am the owner of the laptop, i don't understand why this is happening. The other thread with similar problems involved a software upgrade and had problems with moving files also, whereas my MBP was okay this morning, i didn't do anything else from then till now.
i did a ls -al ~ on the terminal, relevant lines as follows
drwx------
10 root staff
340 Jan 18 02:09 .Trash
compared to desktop, which i had no problems (yet, not sure)
drwx------+
30 Mac staff
1020 Jan 18 02:08 Desktop
i don't understand the notation, reading up about them does not clarify any more then to confuse me further.
My user is "Mac", ~/ goes to folder "Mac"
Please help, I have tried booting from save mode, and it is the same.Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on solving Trash issues. You can also try using Trash It! 5.1 to fix the problem. Or you can try this:
Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder and paste the following at the prompt:
sudo rm -Rf ~/.Trash
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not echo to the screen. Press RETURN again.
(Should anyone tell you this is dangerous or unnecessary, please ignore the comment.) -
Password required when deleting file
I am a new mac user and transfered files from my PC. I tried to delete a file and a popup window requires a password. I type the password (it does not tell me it is wrong, unless it is) and I hear a sound, but the file is not deleted. Help!
I think I did this right. Went to terminal; changed directory by typing
cd documents/favorites/
then typed ls and this is what I got:

Finding and Removing Deleted Files
Hello,
I was looking through the actual iTunes folder on my drive and discovered that there are a whole lot of files that I thought I deleted from iTunes but that are still taking up space on my drive.
Is there anyway to get rid of these?
Thanks for any help,

Password required when placing file in Trash?
Hello everyone!
Since upgrading to Maverick, I am required to enter my password each time I want to place a file in the trash. Also, it automatically empties the trash, rather than just placing it in there for me to empty the trash manually. How can I fix this?
I'm really NOT a computer geek, so please bear with me and keep it simple!
Thanks!Mac asking for password when moving files to Trash

Can not delete file. Error is "Could not find this item".
I get the following error when trying to delete a file: "Item not found". This is a Word 2007 document that would not save properly so I saved it with a different name. Now I can't delete the original file.
The body of the error states "Could not find this item. This is no longer located in... . Verify the item's location and try again.Hi,
I'm having exact the same problem with a file with a long name, to delete, move, rename, attribute change, etc. I deleted the file, which I receive the confirmation. However, the file is still there, with zero bytes and no extension. When I try
to delet, move or change the file, I get the error "Could not find this item, This is no longer located in xxx. Verify the item's location and try again."
I tryed everything: Using DOS, there's no 8.3 name format; In safe mode; chkdsk and sfc. Nothing worked.
I also tryed the tricks in http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/27924-could-not-find-item-when-deleting-files-3.html

Without success.
I took some more time and found this tool on the net "DelinvFile". It works perfectly, after trying EVERYTHING!!!.
I Have Windows 7 professional 64bits and NTFS.
Thank you very much.
Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou......... We are almost bald tearing our hair out over this issue and how to fix it. Delin File WORKS...... At the cost of about 28 bucks well worth it.............. Good onya mate............ -
How to findout deleted files in hp unix
Hi All,
i have deleted some files from audit directory on HP-UX machine files have been removed but space has not been released, so how to find out the deleted files and remove them to free up the memory and lsof utility is not installed,
please help me in that to resolve the issue without lsof.
Thanks in advance

so how to find out the deleted files and remove them to free up the memory You mean free up disk space? If the files are loaded into memory then that would be either process memory or shared memory. Killing the process will free up that memory, whereas you can use ipcs to remove shared memory.
and lsof utility is not installed, please help me in that to resolve the issue without lsof. That is like asking what to use to drive a nail into wood - but without using a hammer. You can use your head.. but it will hurt. Likewise not using the correct s/w tools also hurts and is unlikely to do an effective job. Why not simply install lsof - or if that is a problem, start killing processes that you suspect may have those deleted files open. Or simply reboot the platform. -
Can't delete file from LR, requires password from finder Mac OS
I have an older Powermac running OSX 10.5.8. I store all of my images under the same folder on the same external hard drive. For some reason, and this has never happened before, has always functioned normally before this, I don't know why, images cannot be deleted and moved to the trash in LR. From the finder level, those files each require I type in my password (Finder requires that you type in your password.) This has never happened before, I've tried a shut down and cold re-boot but the behavior persists. Images are not locked and everything looks normal but not behaving normal. I realize this is not a Lightroom problem, but I need to delete from Lightroom because it is where I can review the images best while choosing which ones can be deleted. Anyone seen this Mac behavior before? Any fix you know of?
Thanks,
KenSound's like the files don't have the correct permissions. Since they're on an external drive, you could just select the drive's icon, bring up the info window (Cmd+i) and tick the checkbox "Ignore ownership on this volume".
I do that with all my additional internal/external drives by default. It's usually no problem unless you need to prevent other users from accessing the files. -
Password required to delete or move files in Mavericks - permissions
I have the problem where when I try to delete or move files, I get asked for a password. I've read the various old threads on this problem, and tried the following fixes:
Using Disk Utility, repaired permissions
Booting into the passwork reset utility (holding cmd-R on startup), and resetting permissions
Changing the permission on .Trash
None of this worked.
I began exploring the permissions on my files and on all of them, info reported that the file permissions were generally set as:
everyone - Custom
(Me) - Read & Write
staff - Read only
Sometimes there was an additional entry of everyone - Read & Write
In reading about permissions, I couldn't figure out what that "Custom" meant. If I did an ls -l on that file, I got -rw-r--rw-@
I have found that if I reset the permission for everyone to Read only, and make that Custom privilege go away, the passwork requirements for that file also go away. If I use the Info panel, if there is a second everyone entry, I have to remove that by setting it to No Access. Only then can I change the upper everyone privilege from custom to Read only. But that fixes the problem for that file.
So, here's my ask. How do I do this over all my files? Executing CHMOD 744 (filename) does not remove the everyone - Custom privilege, and thus doesn't fix the problem. As I've explored this further, it's apparent that this is an ACL problem, where the everyone deny delete ACL permission is being set. (Not sure of the right terminology here.) This can be cleared with the command: chmod -N (filename)
For some reason, this has propagated throughout my file system, creating havoc in applications. Dropbox won't update because the files can not be changed, bookmarks in Safari can't be removed, etc. I've fixed the application problems for now with chmod -R -N ~/Library but there's no telling what other damage I may have done by removing all the ACL permissions from all those files.
The question I'm chasing now is what is changing the ACL's on these files. It appears that the ACL settings are inherited from the folder, but when I check the folder properties with Get Info, I don't find anything. What am I missing? -
Deleting files requires administration password?
I'm not sure what settings I've messed around with to get to this point however, any time I now want to delete files it not only requires my administrator password but it bypasses the trash bin and just fully deletes them off of my laptop. It was just a minor annoyance at first, but then I realized as I was deleting mass amounts of music from iTunes that clicking "move to trash" on the files did nothing, the files are still in my music folder and now I have to manually delete and enter my password on the files. It's also stopped uninstalling things due to this issue with the recycle bin. I've checked the safe trash bin/etc checkboxes and toggled them on and off but no go it's still the same issue. Does anyone have any ideas what I might have done to cause this?
Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar. -
Why would the finder require my password when I trash a file?
Every time I attempt to drag a file or folder (or use the keyboard shortcut) to the trash I receive the notification 'the finder is trying to make changes' and asked for my password.
Once I enter the password the file or folder disappears and the empty trash sound is played. The trash itself remains empty.
I've repaired disk permissions in the hope it would fix the problem but it doesn't.
Why is this happening and how can I make it stop?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul.1.
