Finder reset

My girlfriend was using her ibook the other day as usual. She closed the lid, and opened it again half hour later, and Finder had reset. She lost all of her ical calendars and about half of her photos (approx 1000) is there anyway to get these back?

To rebuild the iPhoto database, hold down the  and Options Key on the start-up. When the "rebuild" panel appears, select "rebuild the iPhoto Library database". Then, "rebuild".
Do not use the computer for any other purpose during the rebuild. Also, plug-in the computer, that is don't run the rebuild while in battery mode.

  • Finder Resets After Accessing a Specific File

The basic problem is that I have a file in a folder on my desktop. When I scroll down to this file the finder resets completely. The finder windows close, all of my desktop icons reset (disappear and reappear.)
The background story is that this is a file that I retrieved off of my western digital external hard drive via data recovery after it had been formatted by time machine (involuntarily I might add). I ran a data recovery tool and it came up with about 300 files, which I am trying to sort through. Whenever I come up to this file everything resets, so I have no chance to delete or remove it. How can I get rid of it?
If there is a command for the terminal, the file name is F16531117.pct, it is located in a folder named GOOD FILES on my desktop. What would be the exact command line to run to delete this file?

Thank you, that solved the problem. Any ideas why that file would cause that to happen? And one last thing. I ran the recovery and saved all the files in that folder. That folder is somehow 160gb large, how can I tell which files are doing this? Or how can I sort through quickly to find the largest files? All the files on the drive I recovered from were never more than 20 gigs total.

  • Finder resets every minute

Last week I upgraded my ibook from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 via software update. i think i also updated quicktime and iTunes at the same time. After doing this I began experiencing a problem i've never seen before in which the finder 'resets' every minute or so, regardless of what program i am running. the desktop items disappear for a few moments and when they reappear, i'm "in" the finder and have to click on the window of the progam i'm in to continue using the program (e.g. if i'm typing in Word or Mail, i have to click on that doc in order to continue typing, something i've done 3 times since beginning this message). I downloaded 10.4.9 combo and installed that. no change. i thru away the system and finder preferences in my library. no change, and the finder prefs renews itself at every 'reset'. there is no 'finder reset' option from the finder dock icon like there once was--the only option is "hide". Any suggestions?

I suspect the magic word is "StuffIt"--for some reason its various add on goodies frequently have unfortunate effects on the Finder.
Restart and hold down the Shift key as soon as you hear the startup chime. This will boot you into Safe Mode, which will repair the disk, clean a couple of caches, and disable ALL third party startup items (and a few of Apple's too). The start will take longer than normal as it does all this. The Finder should now work normally, and you can start looking for Stuffit add ons: check here:
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Contextual Menu Items"
    "/Library/Contextual Menu Items"
If you find something from StuffIt in either location, drag it to your Desktop. Also launch System Preferences, go to Accounts and click the Login Items tab. If there is something in there from StuffIt click on it to select, then click the minus button at the bottom. Now restart normally and see if the Finder is working correctly.

  • TC makes finder reset.

I just plugged my TC in for the first time in a month and when I go to click on the "shared" disk in the finder to access it, everything disappears and it looks like finder reset. I think the drive may have failed but I don't know how to verify that, does anyone know what to do so that I can access my files on the TC again?

What is the airport utility showing.. disk errors will either prevent the TC from booting.. you will have a solid amber LED.. or it won't boot at all.. is the LED green on the TC?
Or the TC will show that the SMART has failed on the disk page of the utility.. if SMART has triggered you need to remove the disk and see if you can recover the files.. plug it into a USB to SATA enclosure.. and use Disk Warrior or Data Rescue 3 to see if the files are available.. if you cannot read them.
If the LED is off on the TC (Gen 1 from your profile) then the power supply is dead.. this is standard TC issue.. buy a new one or get a replacement power supply.. Just type Time Capsule Power Supply into ebay search.

  • Persistent Finder Reset

    OSX 10.4.11
    Motorola iMac
For the past while the Finder resets regularly at a frequency that makes using any app next to impossible - copies are interrupted, etc.
I cannot link the onset of the problem to any particular event
    I have done the following:
    PRAM resets
    deleted
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    and restarted
Scanned and repaired disk [bundle bits etc - no major problems] with TechTools
I've also created a new user acct and it appears to be problem free so the issue appears linked to the initial acct.
So-o-o where do i look for a fix [I really don't want to do a re-install if it can be avoided].
    TIA

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.

  • Screen flashes every 3 secs and the finder resets

im on a late 2011 imac and the problem started when i was opening a dmg, before the dmg had finish the finder reset and i cant have acces to the folder with the file that i think is making all this flashing and reseting of the finder, i've even had tried to reset the size of the resolution of the screen and it just flashed and got back to the state it was when the problem started.

I did a "Repair Disk permissions" and that stoped the flashing(there was no sound with the flashing) but i still can not enter to the Applications folder, where the half installed app is, i've even tryed with the
    rm -rf ./filename
comand on the terminal and that does not do the trick, reading more i saw some post that said starting the machine in "safe mode" i get the screen with the loading bar but i still cant get to the applications folder. and thats the status right now, ty for the sugestion but i think i need more help!

  • Finder Resetting??

I am running Tiger on my G5 desktop. I do a lot of video/post work so I use an array of external hard drives for data storage. I recently bought a western digital 500gig firewire drive. Ever since then, i've been having problems with my computer. The firewire drive does not always show up, but more disturbingly and annoyingly, my finder tends to reset. By this i mean all the icons on my desktop disappear than reappear. If i'm using an application, it automatically brings the finder forward. Even as i'm typing this, i have to click on the browser window every minute or so because the finder will suddenly take over. Besides just being annoying, it makes it impossible to burn a cd/dvd. It seems that when the finder resets, it disrupts any burning that may be taking place.
I've deleted files, erased free space, started up from the disc and ran system utility. Nothing is showing a problem.
Even with the external hard drives unplugged, i'm still having this issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Hi, can you clarify this...
I've deleted files, erased free space, started up from the disc and ran system utility.
    Do you mean Disk Utility?
If it isn't leaking inside, disconnect every thing but Monitor, Mouse, and KB, then...
Might give a try with Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
As long as you don't have a USB connection in tandem with a UPS, which can cause problems.

  • Finder resets path when connected to SL Server

    Hi,
I've posted this in the Mac OS X SL -Finder section but was told this was more of a Server issue so here it is again.
I'm having a big time troubleshoothing this. I have a couple a mac clients connecting to a Mac OS X serveur 10.6.2. Most clients are running 10.5.8 and some 10.6.2, me included. Now some users both with SL and Leopard have the following issue. When the connect to the server, navigate to a folder, the finder resets the window to there computer or home folder depending what's in there prefs. This is really annoying since if you navigate to some place on the server to copy something, it resets before you can do it! On user even has this happen when in a dialog box (like save or open) mainly from Indesign. She is running 10.6.2, a machine I just setup from the ground up. The server is also newly installed and running 10.6.2 but I also had the problem with 10.5.8 server. I also redid the whole permission on the server when I migrated from the old server to the new, redid every user. I didn't copy preferences from finder or any other system files besides colorsync profiles and prefs for Adobe CS4 so I don't think those are responsible.
Anybody as seen this? Please Help! This is driving her (and me) crazy!
    TIA
    Jeff

    Hi.
I am having the same problems with one customer server running 10.6.2. Clients updated to 10.6.2 as well.
New server that came with 10.6 (not updated) and I have been troubleshooting the problem for a day and come to the follwoing conclusion.
The problem starts when opening Indesign document off the server (from one of the folders where we are seeing the problem, have only one group that have read/write permissions to everywhere on the sharepoint ACL and Posix). Once the problem starts the only way is to disconnect and reconnect to server from the client and the problem go away. I can reproduce the problem in seconds and happens from every client in this office.
The problem never occurs when accessing the folders from the Finder, only within Indesign and from indesign it affects the Finder.
My workaround is to connect with SMB as i seems to be working. Been talking to Apple and they blame Adobe and Adobe does not support working on files residing on a fileserver.

  • 10.5.8 Finder resets to default, desktop files gone!

The Finder on my 2008 Mac pro is really acting up at the moment an I have no idea what's going on.
My desktop has been wiped clean. Nothing there, except the drive icons. I don't keep much on the desktop but there should be a few folders and files that I always keep there for convenience. Also, Finder has reset to default settings - lost my custom Places from the sidebar and opens in icon view, which I never use.
I looked at the actual folder in Finder as well and the files are definitely not there.
    What I have been doing:
I ran iDefrag on my files disk (INT HD 1TB) a few days ago (first time). I forgot to turn off Time Machine so they have probably been running at the same time.
Today Time Machine decided to backup everything from scratch, which I attribute to iDefrag switching everything around on my Files disk. Also filled the backup disk so I only have two backups at the moment, both from today.
Other than that, I have mostly been using Adobe Bridge, Photoshop and InDesign CS4 for editing quite big files. Also Firefox for normal web browsing.
Hard drives are reported to be ok. Profile is still the same name. The files are not in the Trash. Everything else is where it should be. System disk is 1/3 full. Files HD (which hasn't been affected AFAICS) 1 TB 1/2 full.
Does anyone know what could be happening to my machine?

I had the same problem and finally discovered that somehow my Desktop folder had become a Package. I could not do anything on the desktop but the apps and the dock etc. were working fine. I went to Go/Home Folder/Desktop/Show Package Contents and everything was there. But nothing appeared on the desktop. I could not open a new folder and anything I tried to drag to the desktop resulted in a permissions error. I tried all of the above fixes and more. The solution? Trash the desktop folder from your Home folder, empty the trash, reboot and start all over again. If you're lucky like I was you will have a Time Machine backup and you can restore a previous Desktop easily. Worked for me!

  • My preferences in Finder Resets every time I open it

Am having some teething trouble with the new Finder application in OSX Lion.
Seems to work ok, but I'd like to add some items to the sidebar. Easy enough to do this via preferences, however each time I reopen Finder it has reset the sidebar back to it's default settings, and have to manually add it again.
Is this normal? very frustrating to have to add it every time I open it.

  • Cannot find reset button to reset PMU

My iBook will not boot up, I had to do a hard shut off after it locked up on boot and now it won't start at all. The apple documentation shows a reset button on the left hand side of the case but I cannot find it. It's the semi-translucent version of the G3 iBook. It's a 700mhz. I've tried applying pressure to the left of the touchpad but it still won't turn on. I think that the PMU will do the trick but I can't even get that far since I can't find the button!! Thanks for your help everyone, it's a really simple problem but I can't solve it.

    Hello,
I'm also trying to resett the PMU. The recommended article tells me that because I don't have a reset button I should turn the machine off. Then press shift-control-option-power on the keyboard, then wait five seconds and then turn it on.
I assume that 'power' is THE power button, but when I press this combination it starts the computer up. So I can't wait five second and then turn it on. And it certainly hasn't reset the PMU because the clock is still correct.
Is there another 'power' key I should be looking for?

  • Dock, Safari & Finder reset & files deleted after Parallels forced-quit

Folks, I'm running Parallels build 1966 on my MacBook Pro & last night I had to force-quit the application afetr it stopped responding. This morning I found the dock reset to default, Finder, Expose & Safari preferences reset & my Paralles virtual machine files (main & backup) deleted from my user/library folder.
My user account seems intact - bookmarks & passords still OK & I've tried running file salvage to recover the VM files but it doesn't recognise this file type. If this was a Wintel machine I'd suspect a virus but my Parallels VM files are protected with AVG.
I've not had to hack a Mac yet, so any clues for recovery before I assume everything is lost & start rebuilding from scratch?
    Best

  • Finder resets itself to default local folder when I delete a folder from a server. How can I stop this?

    Hello there,
At work I use a Mac Pro (like this one: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_pro/specs/mac-pro-quad-core-2.8-2008-s pecs.html)... and I have a very weird problem that is really annoying.
I don't have the information (but I can get it tomorrow) on the operating system or any information of the server I am having the issues with. But I was hoping maybe some one else with the same issue might have the answer without all of that information.
We use the server to access, open, edit, save, delete, move, etc... all of the files we are currently working on.  No files are ever transfered to our local computer's hardrive and then copied back to the server (don't ask me why, and don't tell me to do that, this is how it's done in the office, and this is what I have to do)...
The issue is this.  When I have to delete a folder from the server, which is usually a folder within a folder, and maybe within another folder, and another, and another (meaning it takes me time to look for this), the Finder deltes the folder (and asks if I am sure I  want to delete it, because it will be deleted forever since I am deleting it from the server)... and when I say yes, the Finder window that I am currently on (the folder which contains the folder that I am deleting) reverts back to the initial "device-folder" for my local mac pro... meaning the folder which is the main folder of that mac pro, where I can see the mac pro's hard drive, any external hardrives, any usb pen drives, any cds, etc...
So EVERY TIME I delete a folder on the server, which is more than 30 times a day, I get "kicked out" of the foler which contains the folder to be deleted, and gows back to tha "main" folder of my computer, so I have to go back to the server, back to the folder, and sometimes it is a folder, within a folder, within a folder, etc, etc, etc, ... and don't tell me the solution is to create a shortcut on my sidebar for that folder, because the folders are the jobs that I may be working on that day, so I could work on as many as 30 different folders per day, and I do have those in my sidebar, but it is still pretty annoying to have to go back to that folder.
One thing I noticed... SOMETIMES, not all the times... IF I delete two folders instead of one, it won't do it... or IF I drag the folder to the trash, instead of clicking on my "delete" icon on my finder's toolbar, it won't do it... but this is only SOMETIMES. So these are not the solutions either.
I can try to get a screen cap tomorrow of the issue, but if anyone has this same issue and knows how to fix it, plese let me know.
I will also try to get more info on my computers OS and the server.
    Thank you,
    MW

Hi PCM1, if i understand well the problem you have is when you click on a URL in a pdf file, the link opens in IE ? Have you checked in the default programs panel to see if all was well set ?
