Finder Resetting After Restart

Hello,
I recently restored my preferences folders, both on the Macintosh HD and my user account, from a Time Machine backup to solve a problem that I was having with my trackpad.
I am now finding that whenever I add any shortcuts to my finder sidebar they disappear after restarting my machine.
Has anyone else encountered this problem and successfully solved it?
Many thanks/

Hello again:
Confused!
Me too (no help to you). It is possible I do not understand what you are trying to do as I do not add things to the finder sidebar. Usually trashing a preference file corrects all sorts of things.
The reinstall (over your existing system) would, at least, almost eliminate software issues. An alternative would be to do a complete restore from a TM backup at a point in time where things were working the way you wanted.

  • Keyboard system preferences resetting after restart

    Greetings,
I began with 2 similar problems.  My menu bar and keyboard system preferences would reset after each startup.  I fixed the former with https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6028346?tstart=0
Still, every time I restart or logout my keyboard system preferences reset to the default.  These defaults interfere with the software I run- Logic & Pro Tools, so while not the worst thing to have to remember to reset them each time, it is a drag.
    Any help will be appreciated
    Thanks

The procedure below will reset the permissions of a user's home folder in OS X 10.7.4 or later, including 10.8 or later. If you're running an earlier version of 10.7, update to the latest version first. This procedure should not be used under OS X versions older than 10.7.4.
Back up all data before you begin.
    Step 1
Click the Finder icon in the Dock. A Finder window will open.
    Step 2
Press the following key combinations, in the order given:
    Command-3
    Shift-command-H
Command-I (the letter "I" as in "Info.")
The Info window of your home folder will open.
    Step 3
Click the lock icon in the lower right corner and authenticate with the name and login password of an administrator on the system. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Step 4
In the Sharing & Permissions section of the window, verify that you have "Read & Write" privileges. If not, use the "+" and "-" buttons in the lower left corner to make the necessary changes.
    Step 5
By default, the groups "staff" and "everyone" have "Read Only" privileges. With those settings, the files at the top level of your home folder will be readable by other local users. You can change the privileges to "No Access" if you wish, but then your Public and Drop Box folders will be inaccessible to others. Most likely, you don't need to change these settings.
    Step 6
If there are entries in the Sharing & Permissions list for users or groups other than "me," "staff," and "everyone," delete them.
    Step 7
Click the gear icon at the bottom of the Info window and select Apply to enclosed items... from the drop-down menu. Confirm. The operation may take several minutes to complete. When it does, close the Info window.

  • Finder Resets After Accessing a Specific File

The basic problem is that I have a file in a folder on my desktop. When I scroll down to this file the finder resets completely. The finder windows close, all of my desktop icons reset (disappear and reappear.)
The background story is that this is a file that I retrieved off of my western digital external hard drive via data recovery after it had been formatted by time machine (involuntarily I might add). I ran a data recovery tool and it came up with about 300 files, which I am trying to sort through. Whenever I come up to this file everything resets, so I have no chance to delete or remove it. How can I get rid of it?
If there is a command for the terminal, the file name is F16531117.pct, it is located in a folder named GOOD FILES on my desktop. What would be the exact command line to run to delete this file?

Thank you, that solved the problem. Any ideas why that file would cause that to happen? And one last thing. I ran the recovery and saved all the files in that folder. That folder is somehow 160gb large, how can I tell which files are doing this? Or how can I sort through quickly to find the largest files? All the files on the drive I recovered from were never more than 20 gigs total.

  • Why do my sound output settings keep resetting after restart?

Just bought a MBPro with OS 10.6.4.
After restarting my sound output settings keep resetting to Soundflower (2ch) from Internal speakers.
It doesn't take too much to change it, but it is pretty annoying and I'm assuming there's some obscure setting that can fix this.
    Anyone able to help?

This fixed it on my Mac Pro. It might work on a MacBook Pro.
    Delete these three files:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.soundpref.plist
    /Library/Preferences/Audio/com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
    /Library/Preferences/Audio/com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
Reselect whatever sound device you want as your default in the Sound Preference Pane.
    Restart the computer.

    Hi AEEA-Family,
I also did the update this morning and had the same problem also on Vodacom. The whole morning after the update I have No Signal, turning the phone on and of gives you signal for a couple of minutes then it drops again to no signal.
I've just made the following changes on my Phone and all seems ok again.
Here are the steps I took to resolve it on my phone.
    1. Go to "Settings" > "Carrier" > Turn off "Automatic", wait for list of Carriers and select "Vodacom-SA"
    2. Go to "Settings" > "General" > "Cellular" > Turn off "Enable LTE"
    3. Go to "Settings" > "General" > "Cellular" > "Cellular Data Networks". Then Change EVERY APN from lte.vodacom.za to internet
After I made all those changes I did a hard restart of the phone and now all seems fine.
I suspect the update this morning Enabled all Vodacom's LTE settings, yet Vodacom is not 100% LTE yet in our areas and this is causing the problem.
    Hope this helps other people.

  • Crypto provider priority reset after restart

We changed the crypto provider priority as mentioned in:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/cd/9dd23e6b2c3d67e10000000a114084/frameset.htm
detail we lowered the iaik provider.
But after restarting the server the settings were reset to default. Is there a way to make the changes permanent ?

Holger the link you provided shows only the way to change the status at startup of some services. It does not show how to change the order in which the providers are loaded.
Sorry I can't be more specific about the SAP server, however if you look at the generic JCE pages on Sun's website they tell you following:
You should have somewhere on your path:
    app/user/machine a file name java.security..
In that file you have entries like:
List of providers and their preference orders (see above):
    security.provider.1=sun.security.provider.Sun
The number in security.provider.# will determine the order of preference in which the providers are loaded and possibly scanned.
If you want to force a specific provider's implementation of a security protocol you might just have to code for that by requesting it.
    exemple Cipher.getInstance(protocol, provider)...
    or Cipher.getInstance(protocol, "providername")...

  • N80 Clock reset after restart, pls help

Since w while now, every time i restart my phone, i need to set my clock again.
Apparantly it resets after the phoone has bene switched off.
The battery is completly full, and i've installed the latest firmware.
Can anyone help me fix thix problem?

This has come up before. The best theory (well, I think it's the best - the fact it was mine is purely coincidental) is that the phone has a secondary battery for the clock, just like in a PC.
What this means is that the problem is hardware and to get it fixed I'm afraid you need to take the phone to a service centre.

  • MBP Retina Desktop Wallpaper resets after restart

Earlier this week I got my new MBP 15" Retina, and completed a clean installation of applications from my old MBP.
This morning I had to install and update and for the first time had to restart the computer.  After restarting the origional wallpaper shows on login.
After login and going into Desktop & Screen Saver Settings it shows the proper desktop image.
    Steps Completed:
    1) Problem only occurs on Restart or Shut Down.  A Log Off will maintain the correct wallpaper.
    2) Tried changing to Standard Desktop Picture or an iPhoto gallery photo.
    3) Unlocked '/Users/scottdavis/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist' made wallpaper change (it changes date modified).  Restart.  Did not resolve.
    4) Tested the same process on MBP 17" Early 2008, works correctly.
    5) Running OSX 10.8.2 - completed MBP Update 2.0 (is where I had to restart)

    Hi all,
I have had this same issue with OS X Lion and it continued on to OS X Mountain Lion as well. I have had the wallpaper switching on me to the default solid blue color whenever I restarted (every month or so) and when switching between users (every other day or so). So this issue was very frustrating having to go back in and reset the wallpaper to my preference whenever I switched to either user. I found a solution that has been working for me for several restarts and several switching of users now:
First, I took some of your advice by locating all of my wallpapers into a 'Wallpaper' folder located in each user's 'Documents' directory. I copied to same wallpapers to each user so both user's have the same wallpapers to choose from.
Then, I installed the latest stable version of 'OnyX' (freeware software). I used OnyX on both user accounts to run through practically all the settings to clean up the entire Mac (Mac Mini, mid 2011) including: Verify [S.M.A.R.T. Status, Structure of volume, and Preferences], Maintenance [Permissions], Cleaning [System cache, User cache, Internet cache, Fonts cache, Log cache, Misc. cache]. I generally left the default checked boxes alone and didn't change any settings and Executed the program to run as default.
After running OnyX, I re-set my wallpapers for each user and went ahead and tested the restarting of the computer and switching back and forth between users. It was very easy to duplicate the bug previously, but now I could not get the wallpaper to switch back to the default blue as before. Everything seems stable with my wallpaper selection now.
Hope this helps someone. Thanks everyone for your input too.
As a side note, my Mac is running much smoother and quicker now too.  =)

  • Mac System Settings Keep Resetting After Restart from Boot Camp

Not sure what to make of it but it's highly annoying. Most of the time when I restart my computer back into the Mac partition after I've been using Windows XP on BootCamp, most of my system settings are reset. The most obvious ones I run into are desktop background, Safari homepage, and the Spaces preferences, but there are others. Help. Thanks.

Did that reset, then rebooted into BootCamp, then restarted into the Mac. Settings appear OK, but I will try it a few more times over the next couple days to be sure. I thought it odd that it does it much of the time, but not all the time.... If it stays this way I'll post this as answered in a few days. If not, then I'll let you know that, too! Thanks guys!

  • Setting up desktop background from iphoto resets after restarting my Mac OS..

    Hello,
I have the Mac Os X 10.7.3 version on 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 processor. I use Iphoto '11 version 9.2.3. My iphoto library shared on /Users/Shared/Ress.sparseimage and it's formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Two users are using same library and we have no problem while sharing this library.
The only problem occurs when I tried to set up the desktop background from iphoto. When I change the background from iphoto application and restart my computer, the desktop background resets to Andromeda Galaxy.
The reason it resets the background to Galaxy because the volume that contains shared library starts slower. I know this for sure because when I check the Devices section from Finder as soon as the computer starts I can’t see my shared volume on Devices and it takes up 5 or 10 seconds to appear in there.
In my opinion, somehow late launch for this shared volume changes the background’s path to /Library/Desktop Pictures and the first picture in there Andromeda Galaxy.jpg.
We can fix this problem by copying the picture to the path /Library/Desktop Pictures. But unfortunately this solution is very basic and will not satisfy me because I don’t want to copy my pictures from one path to another every time I want to change the background. That’s very frustrating.
I would like change my background from iphoto application. In fact when I use iphoto without sharing and setup the background from iphoto application, I don’t face this problem. This problem only occurs when I share my iphoto library on a volume as a sparseimage.
    Best Regards,
    HB

Just grab a bunch of photo's you want and place them into a new folder in your User/Pictures named desktop pics or something.
Then you can drag and drop copy certain ones from the shared iPhoto Library.
I keep my desktop and iPhoto Libraries seperate, iPhoto is personal and desktop pictures are just that. No need to waste space in iPhoto as I have over 680 desktop pictures and about 8000 iPhoto pictures, so I don't want to overload iPhoto anymore that it is already.
Once you get large enough desktop pictures the matter becomes mute, just rotate them every 30 or so minutes and it toss in a few new ones from iPhoto when you wish.
If you didn't know, you can point the system preferences > desktop pictures at a new folder in your Pictures folder,  there is no need to use the iPhoto Library or drop them into /Library/Desktop Pictures, this is rather risky to be messing inside that folder, in fact in 10.7 Apple has made it invisible to stop people from messing around in there.
Just click the little "+" sign to add a new folder in System Preferences > Desktop & Screensaver preferences.

  • Time Resets after restart

I recently installed 10.6.5 on a Mac Pro DESKTOP. After I restart, the time (clock) resets to an earlier time, just the hour not the date etc. I just changed the pram battery - same result (time changes).

I have since discovered that the TIME RESET happens ONLY AFTER rebooting from WINDOWS.
OSX assumes the hardware clock is set to UTC (GMT). Windows sets the hardware clock to local time, so, in most places, OSX will then boot with the wrong time. It is possible to set Windows to use UTC, but some applications may have problems with this.

  • Settings always reset after restart! Help please????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Basically I bought an iMac last October, 21", 4GB standard manufactured settings ram etc. After a few weeks every time I quit an application and go back on it, it returns to its old settings. Whenever I remove a bookmark from the toolbar on Safari and restart it, it returns to the old settings, when ever I restart the computer the dock and background changes towards its original settings. This is starting to get really annoying, and I don't know what to do and I have installed all available updates. Is an issue like this covered in a warranty and do you guys have any ideas on what I should do?

    Hi...
Try Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If that didn't help, since your Mac was purchasd last October, it must be running Lion v10.7 and it's still under the one year warranty.
Try using Lion Recovery to repair the startup disk or reinstall the Mac OS X.
If nothing above helped, take your Mac to an Apple store or Apple certified repair provider.
You can make a reservation at a Genius Bar in advance.

  • Dock reset after restart computer / desktop image cannot be changed

    hi everybody!!
It is my first time in the discussion forum, so I hope I selected the right section to place my problem.
I have decided to give my old computer (Mac OS X 10.3) to a friend. I deleted the old administration account and created a new one with his name. After doing this, when I restart the computer the dock bar configuration is reset and I cannot change the image of the desktop. I change the configuration of the dock bar according to my preferences, shutdown the computer, start it again and the setting of the dock is lost again. Re the desktop image, it cannot be changed at all.
    Advices are welcome,
    Thanks

I'm not sure what's causing all this, but if you're giving the computer to somebody I would suggest erasing the hard drive then reinstalling the operating system. If you erase the hard drive with write zeros once you are taking better security measures for you in case somebody (either your friend or a future owner of the computer) decides to try to recover deleted files. It's also like doing a spring cleaning and ensuring that your friend receives the computer in the best condition possible. Of course it will also clear up the problem you are having.
Make sure you also give your friend the original discs that came with the computer as well as any discs for software (including system upgrades) that you re-install on the computer. This will make it easier for them to troubleshoot and to reinstall software should they need to at some stage, as well as being a legal requirement.

  • Stuck in iPhoto and Finder even after restarting

MacBook Pro, latest OS 10.8, stuck in iPhoto, Finder also not responding so can't use Force Quit:  have restarted twice by
pressing on/off and always restarts in same state, Finder and iPhoto stuck - what to do?

Press the Shift key while your Mac is starting to start into safe mode. In safe mode, your Mac will only start with basic drivers, so Finder and iPhoto shouldn't open automatically. Also, safe mode makes some maintenace tasks on your Mac > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
After starting into safe mode, restart your Mac as usual and you should be able to use it without any problem
