Finder restarts if a .m2v file is in the window

I'm going to post this question in several forums because I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software problem/glitch.
I am using Final Cut Pro 4.5HD. After I complete a poject, I export the file out of Compressor to create a .m2v file (mpeg-2). When I try to open the window/folder in which the .m2v file resides (I usually export it to an external hard drive's main window), the window opens with no file names showing and stays open for about a second, then the Finder restarts without that window being open. The same thing happens no matter where I export the .m2v file, meaning that the same thing happens with that window.
I have Quicktime Pro 7.1.6 and the MPEG-2 plug-in, but I'm not sure if the plug-in is working or not. I purchased the plug-in in June 2005 and have since upgraded Quicktime and the OS several times.
I'm assuming that because I can export .m2v files that the MPEG-2 plug-in is working, but I've read that it's used for playback only.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?
I also need to save an AIFF file as an mpg1...any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,

Try this, as it's possible your system just doesn't know what program to associate with .m2v files.
Get info (apple+I) on one of your .m2v files
In the "Open with" dropdown find QuickTime Player.
If it isn't in the list choose "other" and navigate to QuickTime Player in your Applications folder.
Then click on the "Change all" button.

  • How to display the PPT, PDF, XL, DOC files with in the Windows store app?

    Hi,
I would like to display the PPT, PDF, XL, DOC files with in the Windows store app? is there any controls provided by Microsoft to view these files with in the app?
    Or
Any workaround to achieve the desired functionality?
Kindly provide your inputs if any one has.
    Regards
    Prasad

    Hi Prasad,
As I know currently there is no in-build functionality to display the PPT, XLS or DOC file directly on the Windows Store App, but you can always open these files by
    Launcher class
However a good news is we can display PDF on Windows Store App by
Windows.Data.Pdf class, see this for more information:

  • Finder relaunches when viewing M2V file info ...

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but I imagine I'm most likely to find an answer here. So, here it goes:
As the topic states, the Finder relaunches itself whenever I try to view the file info of a M2V file. This happens when I'm attempting to "Get Info" or simply scrolling the window to the right. More specifically, this occurs when I reach the "Kind" column (removing "Kind" from the window disables the problem). While I wouldn't mind simply excluding "Kind" from my windows, I am still unable to "Get Info" on any M2V files. Any ideas why this may be occuring?
    The Files:
    - compressed with Compressor 2.0.1, via Final Cut Pro 5.0.2 (source media uses "Animation" codec)
    - MPEG-2 compression
    - 1-pass, 7.5 Mbs CBR, 29.97fps progressive, 720x 480
    The System:
    - Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5
    - 2.5 GB RAM
    - 372.62 GB SATA RAID (96.11 GB available)
    - OS 10.3.9 (all "Software Updates" installed)
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
    take care & God bless,
    Steve Cole

I suspect you are seeing a variation of the problem discussed in the following link:
    Waymen, "quicktime 7.0.2. and m2v" #4, 11:35pm Sep 8, 2005 CDT
However, since you experience a crash in the Finder when you try to access the Get Info you will have to use a different technique to reset the file association. Select one of the .m2v files that is giving you a problem and then do a control-click (or right click) to show the Finder's contextual menu, then go to the Open With item and select Other... and click the Always Open With checkbox and then navigate to your QuickTime Player and select it as the application to open. This will change the file association for the .m2v file kind and it should fix the problem. You may want to do a system reboot after you do the above fix.
Summary: control-click or right click on the problem .m2v file then:
Open With -> Other... -> (select "Always Open With" checkbox) -> Open (choose) QuickTime Player.
If this suggestion helps in any way, a confirmation or acknowledgment would be appreciated, since that would also help others who may be having the same difficulty. Do for others as you would have them help you.

  • Finder undable to display .m2v files?

I'm of the column persuasion within my finder.
But every time I am trying to work with m2v files in the finder it attempts to generate a preview and crashes. Seriously. Every time.
Is this just the nature of the m2v beast?
Has anyone else experienced the same thing or do m2v files preview and play just fine for everyone else in their finders and QT application?

    Hi Ian,
First thing, can you open and view your mpegs in qt.
If you can then it's a system level issue. So I would try and rebuild your system drive. There are several ways to do this starting with disk utilities, repair permissions etc etc. If you have disk tools of some sort ie disk warrior, drive 10, techtool or nortons they are possibly worth a shot. If you don't have these then possibly a system rebuild using the os x instal disk and upgrade retaining using retain user and network preferences.
    Good Luck

  • JMStudio cannot play a avi file properly but the Window Media Player can

    Hi,
I downloaded and installed the JMF 2.1.1e on Window XP. I tried to use JMStudio to view a AVI file, the top half is black and the bottom half seems ok. The same file can be viewed properly by Window Media Player.
Can someone tell me what I can do to make it work properly ?
    TIA,
    DengYuan

    Hi All,
I did some more research, I found out the problem probably is because the file is openDML format. Does the JMF support the openDML/MJPG ? If not, is there any java plugin I can use to work with JMF ?
    TIA,

  • Can you read files stored on the Windows partition through Mac OSX?

I'm new to Mac, getting one soon, so correct me if I'm wrong in assuming that OS X can make shortcut folders to other locations on the disk drive like windows can.
I'm getting a 500GB hard drive and have a decent movie collection to store on the hard drive, and the Macbook Pro is coming preconfigured with 256GB each for Mac and Windows. I won't really put much on the Windows side, so I thought maybe I could put my movies on the Windows side and then create a shortcut over to there and place it on my Mac side desktop, so that when I click on it, it takes me to the folder in Windows which stores the movies, so that I would still have easy access to them but they would be counted under Windows' partition. First off can you make shortcuts like that, going cross partition? And secondly, I just assumed they would open fine as long as I got VLC player, until I read stuff about NTFS and HTS+ and stuff, meaning Mac can't write to Windows and vice-versa, but I think Mac can read Windows or something from the bootcamp drivers.
Do you think this will work? Thanks

    Thanks for the feedback.
Any ideas on what this software could be? I'm not sure what to look for.
Would it be a once off program or something I need to run in the background to do it? Not too keen on bogging my computer down with programs to launch at startup or constantly running them.

  • 5.0.4 upgrade toasts m2v file associations

I have a problem with m2v files that when I try to look at them in Finder the window closes and DVD Studio is unable to use them. This happened after upgrading to 5.04. I was able to change ONE m2v file to Quicktime but even checking "Apply to All" and rebooting didn't work. When I right click the file the default for m2v is now "Droplet" which I can't get rid of. Deleting Finder prefs didn't help. I have a back-up drive which still has FCP5.02 and Compressor 2.0. I tried encoding with it-no problem. No file association problem either so it appears THE 5.04 AND 2.01 "UPGRADE" have a problem. Now how to solve it on my original drive??? ALL HELP APPRECIATED.

Had this very same issue when I updated my G4 tower to 5.0.3 - all my m2v file associations in the Finder were hosed and Compressor would not launch (it would bounce once in the dock and then... nothing).
I went to the Final Cut Pro Updates page and, after going thru the Apple ID and Serial Number stuff, downloaded only the Compressor 2.0.1 package.
After installing from the package, Compressor worked, though I had to restore my file associations manually.
All that did take me about 15-20 minutes though.

  • Finder restarts when right clicking

    Hi,
MacBook Pro, brand new (1 month old)
When I am in a folder window and right click to for example get the meny up to choose a new folder, the windows closes down and one of the other programs comes up.
It feels like finder restarts as when I go back to the folder window that I had open it is now gone .
So I have to do it all over again..
It seems to be the two finger tap (right click) that makes this happen.
This happens about 1 out of four times I right click in a folder.... this is very enoying as I do this very often..
Is this a bug in OSX?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Hi Ctech, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Is this a bug in OSX?No, it is probably an item in your contextual menu items.
Navigate to ~(your Home)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and drag the items in that folder to the desktop. Log out and back in and retry. If that doesn't help navigate to /Library/Contextual Menu Items and do the same.
If that solves it put the items back one at time until you find the culprit.

  • How do I combine an .m2v file and an .ac3 file into a .mov file ??

    Hello,
I had a question regarding Demuxing M2V and AC3 files so that they can be combined into a .mov file.
A few years ago I converted a .mov file into an .m2v and an .AC3 using Final Cut Pro. I lost the FCP Project and .mov files and only have the .m2v and .ac3 files left.   When I tried to combine them together in FCP, the audio did not match up anymore even though it matches on DVD Studio Pro.    I was told that I needed demux the files.   How do you do that ???
Thanks so much for your time !!!
    Happy New Year!

    Doug,
Am posting the workflow discussed in my last email here in the event others might be interested.
Best workflow I've found to resync and convert the M2V/AC3 elementary stream files to an MOV ProRes422/AIFF file are as follows:
    1) Convert the AC3 audio file to AIFF. (My system is configured for AC3 so I used QT 7 Pro here. My only compaint at this point is that my original AC3 file was DD5.1 and my QT 7 Pro component only supports stereo conversions.)
    2) Simultaneously drop-import the original M2V file along with the converted AIFF file to MPEG Streamclip (requires the QT MPEG-2 Playback component be installed).
    3) Sample playback of the combined data to ensure audio and video are correctly in sync throughout the file.
    4) Use the MPEG Streamclip "Export to QuickTime" File menu option to export the current date to the target Apple ProRes422 video target you want and pass the AIFF PCM audio through to the MOV file container without further processing.
    5) Import the ProRes422/AIFF MOV file to your FCP bin and reset project default codec use to match imported file when asked so you don't have to do any re-rendering for final output.
    6) I re-checked file playback in the Preview window to ensure A/V was still in sync before beginning edits in the project timeline.
All went well for me using this workflow. You may want to give it a try and let us know if it worked as well for you.
    Good luck!

  • When right mouse click on a file or folder the finder refreshes

    Hi everybody!
I am having problems with the finder of my PowerBook G4. I have recently reinstalled Mac OS 10.4.8. I have installed Final Cut Studio and right now I am having problems with the finder. When I right click on a file or folder the finder seems to refresh itself and closes all the windows I have there.
It doesn´t happen all the time but I am getting worried about it. Please, help me.
    Thank you in advance.

This is the Finder crashing and relaunching. It's probably caused by a dodgy contextual menu module (CMM). I've noticed people complain that a Stuffit Module is causing this problem. CMM's are stored at HD/Library/Contextual Menu Items or Home/Library/Contextual Menu Items. Try removing them and logging out and back in again, a little trial an error will find the one causing the problem.

  • Working with m2v files extracted from m2t

    Hey everyone. Here's a question...
First, the background: I'm working with LumiereHD and a JVC GY-100U HDV camera recording in 24p. In the past, I have captured the m2t files into Lumiere, extracted the m2v and aif files, then created mov files for import and editing into FinalCut. This works perfectly..
Now the other day, I accidentally imported the wrong set of files into Final Cut, those being the m2v files... what I found is that the m2v files will play in the viewer perfectly (and if the aif files of the same name are in the same folder will play with sync sound).
My question is, since final cut can PLAY the m2v files, is there a timeline codec I can use so that I can edit with these m2v files and save the step of transcoding them to mov files?
The problem here is that I'm working with ProHD 24p HDV files rather than the standard 30 frame HDV. I know Apple is supposed to be releasing support for 24p in it's next "technical update" but that news was released months ago and there still no sign of it on the horizon... (too bad you couldn't 'modify' one of the existing HDV templates to work in 24 frames).
There may not be a work around here, but I figured if anyone knew if it would work, someone here would.
    Thanks!

Almost forgot to mention... I was looking to gain real-time benefit. I can drop the m2v files on the timeline and RENDER them, but that defeats the purpose of working with the native m2v files...

  • DVD SP 4 crashes importing M2V files

I've recently upraded to Tiger and Final Cut Studio from FCP HD and DVD SP3. Everything seemed to be working more or less fine before the upgrade. Once I updated the whole system, including the latest internet updates, I opened my DVD SP3 project and converted it to a DVDSP4 project. At this point, DVD SP4 started working funny, like crashing everytime I tried to open its preferences window, and I had to force quit. I reinstalled the application, but nothing changes. Now, I can't access any assets in the assets folders. They're invisible, and when I open the folders they are in the app crashes. It crashes also when I try to reimport any of the old m2v files created by the former version of compressor and used under DVDSP3. What should I do at this point? I need to continue working on this project and I've already created tons of subtitles for this track and need to update it with new m2v media, which the program won't import or see... Anyone know what I should be doing?
    Thanks in advance.
    Fernanda

I took both of your suggestions.
As it turns out, my M2V files did have messed up "open with preferences," and I followed the instructions to reassign quicktime as the default app for all M2V files, but this repair described in the thread you pointed did not fix the DVDSP crash problem. It still crashes whenever I try to import or view M2V files in the program... I'm still unable to edit my DVDSP project!
    Any more thoughts?
By the way, are the preferences just one com.apple files in the user's prefs' folder? If so, I have already trashed it as well...

  • How to open files using the Windows associated program?

I have a LV program that is generating a list of files that I may want to open using the associated Windows program. Some are standard Office files but others require proprietary analysis programs.  All have Windows associations such that I can double click on the file name in the Windows file manager and launch the appropriate program. I would like to mimic this behavior within my LV program but without coding a case for each file extension, some of which I may not anticipate now.

There are some problems with that VI.  I have one user that I had to track a problem down with trying to open a PDF file.  Their registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf was read in with a value of "AcroExch.Document                 " (with a lot of spaces after it), which prevented this VI from finding the next key (AcroExch.Document\shell\open\command) which identifies the path to Adobe Acrobat.  Instead of getting the path to Adobe Acrobat, I got back "Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Document" as the path (see attached error).
I checked the key with the Windows registry editor, and it did NOT show the extra spaces.  However, just opening the key and selecting OK (without making changes) was enough to clear the problem.
Not sure if this problem is with the registry keys that Adobe Acrobat created when it was installed or upgraded (the user was on version 9.0, but there are older versions on that machine, too), or if the problem was with the LabVIEW registry key readers in Open a Document on Disk.vi.

  • Windows 7 computers asking for network password to access shared files and printers on Windows XP PRO computer.

I have a network of 10 computers configured as peer-to-peer work group. I have upgraded one of the ten from Windows XP PRO to Windows 7 PRO. The other nine computers are all running XP PRO. AS near as I can tell they are all configured the same. I have the
same user and same passwords on all computers. One of XP computers is used as a print server. The Windows 7 computer initially was able to access shared files and printers on all XP machines with out requesting a network password.
Suddenly, the Win 7 computer began requesting a network password to access the shared files and printers on the XP print server. It will not accept any of the user names or passwords (all administrators on both machines with identical names and passwords.)
The Win 7 computer has no problem accessing the shared files on the other XP machines. It can even access shared printers in a different work group. Apparently something has changed but I'm at my wits end trying to figure what changed on either the Windows
7 machine or the print server XP machine.
I would appreciate any help. Thank you

    Hi,
Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following:
    1.
Disable simple file sharing on the Windows XP computer:
How to disable simple file sharing and how to set
permissions on a shared folder in Windows XP
    2.
On the Windows 7 computer, go to “Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings” and ensure that the
    following items are turned ON:
    Network Discovery
    File and printer sharing
    And this one is OFF:
    Password protected sharing
    3.
Temporarily disable or remove all the security software (firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc.) on the computers and check if it works.
    In addition,
I would like to share the following with you for your reference:

  • HELP! opening a file allowed in the project

    Hi,
I'd like to create and program a UI textfield in which the user writes the name of a .pdf file (there are different pdf files allowed in the project), so that the app decides which of this files opens.
The textfield will have to fill the: URLForResource:@"*****" withExtension:@"pdf"                                ***** is the name of the file
    in the View Controller
How do I link the text introduced in a textfield to this field so that the user chooses manually the name of the file that is going to be open? Also, do I have to create another view to contain the textfield or can I use the same View controller?
    Thanks,
    Albert

How did you specify command line for your .hst file?
It should be something like "java -classpath
[youfile.jar] [youclass] %1"I have not specified command line for the .hst file.
The .hst file is just a file that is created when my main program (jar file) saves its files., later If I double click this saved hst file, it should be opened in the main jar program.
For the double click to work, I have created a constructor
    public hst(String hstfile)
//code to set the file contents in the window.
}the problem is that when I double click it says that the main jar file is not a valid win32 application, so what do I do ?
