Finder's Information Reports Weird File Sizes

I dont believe I am exporting any different than I have in years past. My exports out of final cut pro 6.0.6 in HD 1080i60 should come out to about 11gb per hour of film, but lately sine mid january they come out as like 650mb. QuickTime's information says the correct file size of 11GB, but finder says 650mb. The quality is still in HD but the file size is way to small? Am i the only one experience this peculiar thing?

Ah Ha! that was it...i hate it when little things like that happen. somehow i must have unchecked it one day and never thought twice about it... thank you X. this would also explain some of the other weird video file things i was experiencing.

  • Adobe Bridge Reports Inaccurate File sizes

Im still in CS4 but can't seem to find a forum on CS4.  In any case, why does Bridge report inaccurate file sizes?  I thought I could use bridge to select all of the M2V files in a folder which I wanted to use in an Encore DVD project to get an accurate total file size.  That way I would know if all of the selected files would fit on a single DVD.  But Bridge doesn't report an accurate total file size of selected files.  What's up with that?  Is that too much to ask out of Bridge?

but where is the "activity bar"?  I don't see another total indicator of
    selected files anywhere.
Well I think we are talking about something you already discovered but there
seems not an official name for it I believe, I call it the activity bar, it
might also be called a status bar or status monitor, can't find the official
name for it at this moment.
Anyway It is at the bottom of the Bridge window left side. Click on a folder
and it tells you the number of items showed and items hidden (and here it
should also say the total amount of folder size but as said before, a long
standing feature request). Click on one or more files and it shows the
amount of selected files and the total size of the selected files.
When first opening a folder in the content window Bridge needs to cache the
thumbs and depending on settings also thumbnails. When caching you see in
this bar a spinning arrow showing it is still caching and also the amount of
files to cache that are left.
A very useful item in my workflow

  • FTP connections through Finder not reporting correct file size

    Hi,
I have a NAS that running as an FTP server. When I connect to it through Finder it reports the incorrect file size of 2.7GB (the real file size is 61GB)
Its an DMG image file so it obviously fails when I try to image a new IMAC.
FTP through windows reports the correct file size so rules out any problem on the NAS.
    Any ideas anybody?
    Many thanks.

  • The Finder Lies, Doesn't Update File Sizes or Modification Dates, Etc.

When I save a file to my HD's (internal or otherwise), there's no guarantee that when I open a Finder window to view that file (see its file size, etc.) that the file will:
    • appear at all
    • if it does appear, that the file size will be correct, and/or
    • the modification date will not be correct
Sometimes, yes, files will appear with all the requisite, updated information immediately. Other times it will take minutes, or hours, or even days before the Finder updates the file info (if the file even shows up at all).
Also, simply opening a folder seems to change the modification date of that folder. That seems totally bizarre to me.
This behavior has been going on ever since I can remember, and now it's at the point where it's causing serious problems.
So... is there a fix for this? Or, is there a way to "refresh" a Finder window to force it to show current file information?
Oh, one more thing... I just re-installed my system from a zero'd hard drive so everything about it, particularly Finder prefs, are all brand spanking new. It's disheartening to see that within 48 hours of a fresh install that I'm seeing these kinds of problems.
    Help? Advice?
    -=iSchwartz=-

I suggest for starters you update to 10.4.8.
If the problem continues here are two solutions:
    1) Quit Finder. You can enable the Finder "Quit" menu by pasting this command in Terminal:
    defaults write com.apple.finder QuitMenuItem YES
This will allow you to quit Finder by either right-clicking the dock icon or from the "Finder" menu.
    2) Run an Applescript:
Click here to launch Script Editor.
tell application "Finder" to update folder (folder of the front window as string)
This script will update the front open window. You can drag the script to the toolbar for quick access in all windows. For that, it might need to be saved "As Application", I don't remember.

  • Osx lion get info reporting incorrect file size

    Hi all,
I am trying to troubleshoot a strange problem I am having with Adobe Revel. Adobe have been helping me to resolve it but my mac is displaying some odd behaviour which I need to explain and which may be affecting the adobe app.
The adobe app creates a library file of pictures and the file should be growing as I download more pictures. If I right click on the folder and "Get info" the folder size shown is smaller than I would expect at 25MB given that it should contain a good number of Jpeg files.
I have downloaded an app called "Grand Perspective" to help me manage disk space and for this particular file it reports a completely different (much Larger) file size than "Get Info" did (155 MB) which is much closer to what I would expect to find and it is growing as more pictures are downloaded.
Any idea what could cause "Get Info" to report the wrong file size.
I have another osx Lion mac with the same software loaded and although a completely different machine, it reports the same file size for this library folder as grand perspective does.
    Any help gratefully accepted.
    Slarti

I'm finding the same behaviour running Lion 10.7.2 and the file with the exact same problem as yours is a Sente (bibliography software) library containing references and pdfs.  'Get Info' reports it as 130KB but I know the file is much much larger than that! Even the Size reported on Get Info shows 874.4MB which is still too small.  If I 'Show Package Contents' on the file and 'Get Info' on the 'Contents' folder which it then shows, I get the correct size of 1.14GB
Apple Tech Support over the phone wasn't able to explain this behaviour.

  • Financial Reports PDF File Size

We recently patched from 11.1.2 to 11.1.2.2 and we have noticed that the PDFs generated from Financial reporting have a file size significantly larger (4x) then when they were done with the previous release. Nothing has changed on the reports. Is there some configuration that can be done to get the PDF file size back to where it was previously ? From Financial reports Help-> About we are on version 11.1.2.362.

11.1.2.2 come with a new print engine, which does your PDF looks different in size. You may have change the settings by selecting the "Auto Size" option in the Grid Poperties and test

  • Fat32 reports different file sizes???

I tried to copy files from one Firewire drive to another. The source files were on a drive formated fat32 for use on a windows boot camp disk. When I copied to the Mac OS Estended disk the file sizes were much different. What's up with this -- were the files copied correctly?
    Thanks for your help!!!

FAT32 uses a different block size than Mac OS. If you check the actual size of the file rather than the space occupied on the drive they should be the same. However, if you copy a Mac file to a DOS disk some of the Mac file may disappear into another file which is the resource fork. Now you cannot copy just the file back to the Mac, you must also include the resource fork or you won't have a complete file. This is because Mac files and DOS files are not "assembled" the same way.

  • En CS5 reporting incorrect file size

Hi all, I am creating a DVD9 program with 1 video timeline and 3 audio tracks. I exported out of Premiere AME(win 7 pro x64) the video timeline and main audio track(48k wav). I then exported audio only of the other two tracks mpeg audio.
The exported file sizes that show on my hard drive are:
    5.1 gig m2v file
    2.1 gig 48k wav file
    485 meg mpa audio file
    360 meg mpa audio file
In En I imported the video and wav file as a timeline, in the build window it shows the file size as 8.1 gigs, not the appox. 7.2 gig as shown above
I imported the 2 mpa files as assets and added 2 audio tracks to the timeline. When I put either of the mpa assets into the timeline and check the build tab it shows that each mpa file as about 2 gigs.
I confirmed that there is no video associated with the mpa tracks by importing as a timeline and it showed no video track, and triple checked by looking at the file in quicktime movie inspector. I also went back to AME and exported the audio using format dropdown selection as audio only and selected output format of AAC 48k 256 bit rate and got the same result in En
In the project window it showed the 2 mpa files as untranscoded, I even did a transcode in En and that made no difference.
I am at a loss with this one.
Not sure if this matters, the program length is 3.5 hours
    Any thoughts?

Hi Stan, here are some caps of what I am doing
First cap shows the project files as they appear on my HD
This is the project tab with all assets imported
This shows timline imported on the build tab
This shows the build tab after the second audio track is added
This shows the build tab after the third audio track is in
I have also cleared all cache files, and created a new project.
If I drop all the project files into Nero it shows as an 8.1 gig project, not the 12.1 that shows in En.
To try and determine if there is a corrupt file, I brought each file in one at a time as a timeline, and every one came up as oversized.
I have done this many times before going back to CS3, I have never encountered this before. This is the first time doing this in CS5.

  • Finder reporting wrong file size

I have a folder I wish to burn, it is 620 meg and has many small files in it, but when I go to burn it through the finder, I get an error that it is 900 meg and will not burn onto 1 disk. Backup tells me I need 3 disks for this folder, why?

I think the issue has to do with the fact that some programs have not adopted the new method yet. Unfortunately programs like iTunes can be used on on operating systems as far back as Tiger which used the old system. I noticed this several months ago and find it very irritating, especially when trying to do things like burn DVDs/CDs and trying to fill them up as much as possible. The only thing you can do about it is provide feedback to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and hope they fix it in upcoming releases of their software.

  • Advice needed for Jasper Reports - Unacceptable File Size

    Hi,
we are attempting to use Jasper Reports for online reporting. However, we have found that the filesize for generated reports in HTML formats are simply unacceptable. For example, a Jasper Report of 5000 records is 20MB in size! The download of such files simply takes too long. The reason we believe is due to the image rendering for 'white spaces'. Would greatly appreciate any advice on how to eradicate this problem.

Have you tried posting this question at jasper forum:

For your peace of mind, you might want to post in the Adobe Photoshop Windows forum. This is the Photoshop Macintosh forum. :)

  • Reports - Image resolution : How to minimize file size of exported report?

Our reports are currently using high quality images which makes the file size bigger. Is there any way to reduce the exported report's file size?
Please provide us the way to use lower quality images in reports to minimize the file size.
NOTE: In these reports we are embedding the images (with ".jpg" format) programatically at runtime. Also we are using Crystal Reports XI (Product Version 11.5.0.313) with .Net 1.1 framework.

Using an image program like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro you need to reduce the number of colors and DPI while maintaining as much of the clarity as possible.
    Here's what steps will help.
Open the image you want to change.
Check the 'Count of Colors used' in the tool you're using.  If more than 256 (8 bit) you'll not be able to do much to reduce colors, but most likely the image has a palette of 17.6 million colors (24 bit)
If a color image, try reducing to 8bit, 10bit or 12bit.  If a b&w change it to grey scale and reduce.  Some forms can be reduced to 16 (4 bit).
Next, check the DPI, usually in the 'image information' tool.  If it's more than 200 try reducing to 200.
Save the image in BMP format with RLE compress if possible.  Look at it in the image tool to see if it has held up.
We recently pulled 11 pages from a PDF to PNG, changed them to greyscale BMP at 4bit 200DPI and it reduced the RPT file size from 317000k to 2000k.

  • File Size Discrepancy Between Photoshop & the Finder

I'm trying to be as brief as I can, so here goes. The specific application (PS) is irrelevant, I think. This is about why an app shows one file size & the Finder shows a different file size. In this case, it's a huge difference, due to the file being an image.
I imported into PS CS, from a CD, an original image, which the Finder shows as 269.4 MB. The file format is TIFF, and the bit-depth is 16, not 8. The Finder shows it as a "TIFF Document." Now. I did a Save As and edited that as a master image file. So, I have two files: the original and the master.
I substantially cropped (deleted) pixels in the master file. So, at the same 16-bit depth, the master file should be smaller in size than the original. Right? However, the Finder shows the file to be 433.6 MB in size! Photoshop shows the file to be a more realistic 185.8 MB in size. Why is the Finder showing such a huge file size? Why is the Finder storing 247.8 MB more than I need? The Finder shows this file as an "Adobe Photoshop TIFF file," so there has been a change in format. The file is flattened; no layers, etc., are involved.
One clue could be that the Finder is storing the larger file size to accommodate Photoshop. If one multiplies 185.8 MB by 3, the result is close to the 433.6 MB figure. The 3 stands for the three color channels (red, green, blue) of each pixel (data element) in the image.
The original image, however, is stored correctly by the Finder. Photoshop and the Finder agree on the 269.4 MB file size. If the above scenario were true, the Finder would be storing the original file at three times the size as shown in Photoshop. In other words, there would be consistency in what the Finder is doing.
I suppose I could just ignore the discrepancy, but I have hundreds of images to process, and I don't want to have to go into PS every time to get a true reading of file sizes. The Finder should be accurate in doing that.
I may be in the wrong forum re: Photoshop, but here I think I can find some expertise re: the Finder, since the Finder's storing procedures are in question, to my mind. It's definitely an app/OS interface problem, as I see it. Simply, I edit a file downward in data, save it, yet the Finder saves it at a larger size.

...do you think a lot of cloning & healing brush might have added to the file size, even though I cropped the image?
Yes, depending on your History settings. The more you work on an image, the more history it accumulates. The more different states and sanpshots you save in the History palette, the bigger the file gets as you work on it, because you're storing (within the file) complete information about the file's state before and after every individual change you make to it. What I don't recall is whether that all gets saved to the file in a Save As, or whether the history is flushed each time the file is Saved.
I should warn you that I am by NO stretch of the imagination a PS expert. I was still using PS 5.0.2 until last February, when I upgraded to CS2 (knowing it will be years before I have enough hardware horsepower to run CS3). I'm a rank beginner with CS2, and if someone else wants to jump in here and point out that I'm all wrong, it will be no surprise to me. And because I never used CS, I don't know whether what I'm describing in CS2 is even relevant here.
