Finder's Inspector still broken?

For those that don't know, the Inspector in Finder is a persistent version of the "Get Info" window that changes depending on what item is selected in the Finder. In Tiger, it was fairly well understood to be buggy in that the Sharing & Permissions section did not update along with the other info as various folders & files were selected in the Finder, more or less getting stuck on the first item selected when it was invoked. A related bug was that changes to permissions made through it often didn't actually happen.
It seems that the new Leopard version has the same display problem & probably the same change permissions bug, although I have not tested for that yet.
For those who know what I'm talking about, have you notice the same thing or is it just me?
Thanks for your input!

gareth26 wrote:
is there a difference between the information on the inspector and simply clicking on get info?
There is for me for some files but apparently not for everybody. I do not notice this with system-owned files but for some user owned ones (all with what are apparently custom permissions because they belong to the staff group), I can have the "Get Info" window open saying "You have custom access" & the Inspector window open saying "You can read and write" -- both for the same file.
Update: this may have something to do with an item assigned to group "unknown user." I believe I have just made that user "known" (see Apple - Support - Discussions - "You have custom access"??? for that saga) & now it appears I no longer see the Inspector get "stuck" on the permissions of the first item inspected.
I will have to dig around & see if the unknown user is really banished from my system, but this may explain what might be a subtle bug in the routine that updates the Inspector info display ... maybe.
I will post more details if I discover anything of interest; otherwise, this may now be a non-issue for me.

• View Options Still Broken

View options was broken in Lion (some carried over, others became a white background with greyed out options). I was hoping against hope that this would get fixed in mountain Lion, but my User folder's View Options, for example, is still broken. What will it take to fix this? Can anyone help?

Can you explain what it is you think is broken?
Ok, I think I might have figured out what you are describing.
Sorry to inform you, but you can't set any backgrounds if you have an arrangement set. Arrangement must be set to None in order to set a background color or picture. And, it can only be done in Icon view.
There is nothing "broken." Just too difficult to implement, I imagine.

Could not turn it off at that stage so set up as new iphone. Now icloud will only accept past id email address and password which i no longer have,
but itunes on my phone has my correct current id and password. I need to restore my back up from itunes, i did not use icloud.
Any help please.
I did try yesterday but did not realise at that time that itunes had correct apple id. Hopefully this is a good thing!

Thank you for your prompt reply.
I have looked at icloud.com/find numerous times and my iPad is not showing at all (see picture below). As I said I did turn off 'Find My iPhone' on my iPad and then erase all settings and data before taking it to the repair centre.
The gentleman at the repair centre said that the device won't restore because "Apple thinks that 'Find My iPhone' is still turned on" (I'm repeating what he said).

• TS5249 After reverting back to Garageband 6.0, I find that I still lack all the Garageband Effects (Distortion, Vocal Transformer, etc.). The Garageband 10 "AU" plug ins are there instead. I need help getting the old effects back.

After reverting back to Garageband 6.0, I find that I still lack all the Garageband Effects (Distortion, Vocal Transformer, etc.). The Garageband 10 "AU" plug ins are there instead.
For background: I lost my v6 because I had to reformat my whole hard drive. When I reformatted I lost GB and everything else I had. I downloaded GB (unaware of the awfulness that is v10) from the App Store. The fact that v10 does not have all my favorite and most used effects from v6, I uninstalled v10 and redownloaded v6 from my App Store Purchases. I load up v6 only to find that all the default effects are there for each instrument, but when I go to add an effect (i.e. Distortion, Vocal Transformer, Flanger, etc.), instead of the list of classic effects, there's the list of awful AU effects from v10. What gives?!

I don’t have this issue, but I am looking to learn about which parts of the old GarageBand can safely migrate to the new GarageBand 10.
(Personally, I like most of what changed in the new version. I sorely miss a few features, and I submitted some detailed feedback. If you think similarly—or if you hate the new version like babygotbackup—do the GarageBand community a favor, and send in your own feedback! From the menu, select GarageBand ▶︎ Provide GarageBand Feedback.)

I don't know what happened. It was fine until I tried to play back a video I was making and it didn't want to. Imported videos play fine, but when I drag a clip to the editing part it doesn't play.
I also made a short project a while ago, but no matter what I tried I couldn't delete it. I also couldn't play it again or even access the editing screen
I don't know if I imported too many videos, or have too many videos in the Project Library, but the playback screen is just not working!
The audio is completely fine, however.
What happened?

Hi
Have no clue - but You might try some of this
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
• iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
• Creating a new User-Account and log into this - forces iMovie to create all pref. files new and error free
• Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
• a codec is used that doesn't work
• problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
• version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
• preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
• other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
• External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
• USB-flash-memories do not work
• Net-work connected hard disks - do not work
• iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
This You do by
_ close iPhoto
_ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
• free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
• external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
• GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
• Screen must be set to million-colors
• Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
• Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
• Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
• Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
• In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)
buenrodri wrote
I solved the problem by removing the file: 3ivxVideoCodec.component. after that, up-dated iMovie runs ok.
Last resort: Trash all of iMovie and re-install it

• Apple Configurator still broken in 1.4.2 for me

My testing of 1.4.2 today shows it's still broken. I need to transfer existing supervised iPads from old 2008 MacBooks to new 2013 MacBook Airs with Mavericks. I have special ed students each assigned iPads that have unique configurations for each user. I can't just wipe the device and start over. They have many apps setup to communicate with teachers and parents that took time to configure. In the past when I needed to transfer an iPad to another laptop I was able to make a backup in iTunes un-supervise the device off the old laptop then re-supervise it on the new one. Once I copied the backup to the new laptop I was then able to open iTunes restore the backup for the students data. I then opened Apple Configurator which showed the device still supervised at which point I refreshed the device. This put the correct profiles back in place and I was off and running to enroll it back to our MDM. The product now just wipes the device and prepares it again. Since it's first release at the very beginning I've been held hostage to many times by this product. If Apple truly believes this product is the answer for enterprise and education device preparation they really need make sure the product actually works before releasing it to the masses. The hours I've wasted trying to get this working I'll never get back.
If anyone has any suggestions in how I can transfer existing devices to another laptop then restore, retain, & refresh the device without being brought back to square one I really appreciate it.

I am having issues with it not restoring the app locations on the screens or if they were in a folder.

• When Location Services are turned off, does Find My iPhone still count as turned on?

Let's say I use iCloud, so I turned on Find My iPhone.
But, I like to save battery, so I turn Location Services off while Find My iPhone is enabled, and I understand completely that if Lost Mode is enabled, then Location Services are turned on and enable Find My iPhone.
Scenario:
I go traveling. I lose my phone. It gets stolen. Location Services were turned off (I like to save battery). If the thief were to try to restore the phone, would he/she get a message saying "Find My iPhone is enabled. Please turn it off before restoring this iPhone."? OR, since Location Services are off, would the restore go on ahead without any confirmation?
This scenario is assuming I don't activate Lost Mode before the thief can plug the device into his/her computer and attempt a restore.
So when Location Services with Find My iPhone enabled are turned OFF, would Find My iPhone still be considered ON and therefore, give a confirmation message before any restoration?
I just want to verify that I'm still secure even when I turn off Location Services to save battery.
Thanks for reading!

• Airport Disk still broken after latest software update

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1244463
I like how the topic above was marked as 'solved' and archived. Another Airport software has come and gone and Airport disks are still broken. Mine let me copy 74GB of data to it, but refuses to show the contents via the USB port. Anyone had any luck with this after the latest software update?

I have had similar issues since upgrading to Snow Leopard. The first time, I took my MacBook to be checked and the tech said it booted up fine under another startup disk. Since it's under warranty, they just reloaded the original system (Leopard) and I needed to rely on a time machine backup. Now, after the latest software update from Apple, I had the same problem, and am restoring from the latest Time Machine backup.
Does anyone know if this is a systemic problem? Any tips on preventing a repeat the next time I need to update my system software?
Thanks.

Hm. Well, I promise that when I used to catch a fish on that Flick Fishing game, that there would be a vibration. I don't know how the device or the game made it happen, but I don't think I would mistake a sound for a movement of/in the device itself. I just played the game with the sound up, and there was still no wiggle. I suppose in the end, its really not that important. I know that there was a "wiggle" in that game before the latest Apple software update, that there isn't one now, so I'll just chalk it up to an "improvement."

• Folders keep disappearing in Finder - they're still there but can't be seen

I have folders that keep disappearing from the finder, however, the folders are still there and I can find them in Spotlight and see them in my third-party browser, PathFinder.
I'll give the example, I have a Volume named Video. It is where I save all my FCP projects and related video files. When I opened the Volume, only about a third of my folders were there. First, I freaked, thought I lost all my work, then I did a spotlight search for one of the specific missing folders.
I searched "Encodes" in spotlight, the folder appeared, I clicked it, it opened in the Finder and when I check the full path info it shows as being located at "/Volumes/Video" - which is where it should be. But if I go to the Video volume in the Finder it is still not visible.
I opened PathFinder and went to the volume and the folder was right where it was supposed to be.
The folder is not hidden and my Finder is set to show invisible files anyway. Any ideas why it wouldn't be there or visible and what I can do?

Hi,
I searched "Encodes" in spotlight, the folder appeared, I clicked it, it opened in the Finder and when I check the full path info it shows as being located at "/Volumes/Video" - which is where it should be. But if I go to the Video volume in the Finder it is still not visible.
Just a guess, but I wonder if you could have a "ghost folder" named Video in the /Volumes folder on your startup disk, with the missing items being stored there instead of actually being on the Video volume.
The /Volumes folder is supposed to contain only the "mount points" for mounted disk volumes, but sometimes an actual folder can mistakenly get created there, possibly as a result of a failed copy operation. If /Volumes contains a folder with the same name as a mountable volume, then the system might be unable to mount the real volume the next time without changing the name of the mount point by adding a number. This changes the filesystem path to the mounted volume, but doesn't change the name of the volume icon displayed on the desktop.
If you Get Info on a folder within Video that you CAN see in Finder, does the volume name in the full path have an extra number on it, something like "/Volumes/Video 1" ? That would be a clue that there is more than one place named "Video".
It's easy to check this by looking directly in /Volumes. First you should eject and then physically disconnect all external drives. /Volumes is a hidden folder, and the usual way of peeking into it is:
Finder>Go menu> Go to Folder
enter /Volumes and click Go
In your case, since your Finder is set to show hidden files, you could just look directly at HD>Volumes.
/Volumes should contain what looks like an alias to the startup volume. Don't touch this, or any other aliases. Do you also see any folders which are NOT aliases, with names similar to the disconnected volume, possibly with added numbers? If there is such a "ghost" folder, is your missing stuff in there?

• Nortel VPN still broken with Airport Extreme firmware 7.1

I've just recently started using the NAT'ed mode of my 802.11n Airport Extreme and the the Nortel VPN connectivity is still broken with firmware 7.1.
I've setup a side by side config using the new Airport Extreme and my older Airport Express to make sure the issue is indeed with the Airport Extreme.
Here are the details of my setup:
ISP: NTT/GOL B-FLET (PPoE)
Wireless Config #1 - Airport Extreme firmware 7.1
Wireless Config #2 - Airport Express firmware 6.3
Client #1 - Nortel Contivity VPN V06_01.014 Windows XP 802.11g
Client #2 - Nortel Contivity VPN V04_86.033 Windows XP in Parallels 802.11n
The odd thing is that it isn't totally broken. The VPN connection is made and low bandwidth transfers work fine (ie. ssh, http requests), but higher bandwidth transfer fail to complete (ie RDP/RDC, ftp's, Outlook xfers).
When my clients are on the Airport Extreme Network, they have the issue but don't have the issue on the Airport Express network.
Is anyone else still having problems with Nortel VPN ? Does Apple have any suggestions ?
Thanks,
Eliot

I'm using Apani's Nortel VPN client (the most recent version) on my Mac mini, and the Windows version on my Windows XP notebook computer. Both were broken with the original AEBS firmware (7.0), but now both work well with the updated 7.1 firmware.
Keep experimenting - I'm sure you'll get it working.

• Finding Root Cause of Broken Deployed RT VI

I made the mistake of writing a LabVIEW RT application depending on front panel property nodes. It works perfectly from the development environment. The deployed VI will not run. When called up in the remote debugger it shows a broken vi, i.e. it cannot run.
This is a cRIO9068 (linux) with dual cores. Development environment is LV2014 (NOT sp1) on Windows 7.
So I am now trying to disable things to just get the broken vi to go away without regard to application functionality. I have done the following things:
Configured the depolyed vi to strip all typedefs.
Unchecked the link to typedef option in the Open FPGA Reference node.
Drawn diagram disables around everything that uses front panel property nodes.
The development version still shows a white run arrow, but the deployed vi is still broken. So, I have these questions:
Is it OK to use local variables to read the value front panel controls?
Is it OK to use local variables to set the value of front panel controls?
If front panel property nodes are enclosed in a Diagram Disable box is that enough to get the vi to compile?
Because the debugger is looking at the RT system, hovering over the broken arrow reveals a "Show Errors" tooltip just like normal, except this tip is not active (i.e. selecting it does nothing). Is there any way to get the RT system to tell me where the problems are? Blin king the LED is not an option, because the VI is just broken, it won't run at all.
I've got over 3 months of development time into this. The Application Builder was not available to me during development, otherwise I would have stumbled on this a lot faster. Any help appreciated.
Best regards,
Bill

I think you're looking for the solution in the wrong place. Property nodes won't work properly on RT targets, but they won't cause the VI to be broken (in my opinion, they should break the VI, but that's a separate discussion). Have you checked the Error Log? Right-click the target in the project explorer, and see if there's anything helpful there. If the VI is set as startup, and it can't run, it will probably log some sort of error there. My guess is you're missing a VI that somehow didn't make it into the compiled application.
If the error log doesn't help, then start eliminating other parts of the code, but don't focus on the front-panel interaction.
Below are comments on your questions. Note that none of these will cause a VI that's not broken in the development environment to break when built into an application.

1 - 2. Local variables work normally in RT, although their use, as usual, is discouraged - especially in RT where there's no front panel.
3. As mentioned above, property nodes will not cause a VI to be broken (they just won't work right), and the diagram disable box won't affect this.
4. Check the error log.
