Finder's view in date modified order?

How can I modify Finder to list items in the order they were modified, downloaded or any other way I may need to have to view them in the order other than the one shipped with Finder?
I'm a former Windows user and Windows Explorer gives you choices to list them by name, size, type, date modified and several other ways.
Thank you.
Roxy

Use the Finder's View menu to display the current window as a list, and then click the Date Modified text near the top of the window.

  • InDesign will not open files in Date Modified order

I have never had this problem before, but suddenly InDesign will not import/open my files (photos) in Date Modified order. No matter how I select the files or order/arrange the files in the File\Place window, they open in name order. I have 200 separate folders with six photos each. These are to be placed in the InDesign document in date modified order. Someone suggested batch renaming the files using Adobe Bridge, however the files are in 200 individual folders for a reason and I don't want to open each folder and batch rename 6 at a time. I have reset my InDesign preferences with no luck. I am using Version CS5.5 of InDesign, Mac OS X 10.7.5. Any suggestions?

  • Viewing via 'date modified' & opening a folder updates its date... help!!

    Hi,
So I am trying to be organized, and am sorting through some old files, all arranged as a bunch of files and subfolders within project folders. I sort these project folders by date, with the oldest at the top of the window. I open the oldest folder (with the triangle, not in a new window) to see whats in there, do the same with any subfolder that may be there, close them again, and a few seconds later the main folder date updates to the current date and jumps to the bottom of the list. This is infuriating me!, I now have projects that haven't been opened since 2001, inside a folder showing 'date modified' as 5 minutes ago.
It appears that opening a subfolder will update the date of the folder it is in. This is ridiculous!! you try to be organised with your filing and that's the thanks you get! now when i view all these projects by date, I wouldnt have a clue how old they were unless I open the folder. stupid!
I have noticed this with 2 macs, can anyone help, this can't be normal procedure. note, I havent opened, let alone saved anything, just viewed the contents of folders.
    help!!

    Hi folks,
This issue has been driving me crazy, and I've been searching everywhere for a solution... today I am happy to report that I found one!
Limit Point Software has just released a great utility for dealing with this issue where folders have their "Date Modified" altered after you just opened the folder.
It is called "SyncFF" and you can download at:
    http://www.limit-point.com/Utilities.html
    Here is the product description:
SyncFF is a drop utility for setting the modification and creation date of folders to the latest modification date of their contained files. This way the modification date of the folder matches the modification date of the "oldest" file it contains. The process is recursive, which implies all subfolders are processed too. Universal Binary, Mac OS X 10.4 and above.
It works wonderfully, and it is so nice to have the proper modification dates on my folders and projects again.
I should also say that the developer is very helpful and responsive to feedback.

  • Finder list view difficulty

I prefer to use the List View in the Finder but I find one aspect of this interface particularly annoying. That is, if an item is highlighted (as it usually is) and one needs to scroll down or up to locate another item, the Finder keeps returning the focus to the item that is highlighted. This can be improved by pressing the escape key (to un-highlight the original item) but I usually forget to do this until the offending refocusing has already occurred. Does anyone have a workflow or suggestion as to how to avoid this problem.
OK, I know this sounds trivial but I am a developer who uses the Mac for several hours a day and am constantly locating code files in deeply embedded folder structures (probably several hundred times a day). I am hoping to smooth out this user interface experience.

Sorry, no, preferences in the sense of what I prefer, but I believe view options (command J) are stored in DS_Store files, as well as list view column data, such as date added, date modified, name, kind, size, etc (except for some folders such as network, computer and meetingroom/airdrop?) which are stored in com.apple.finder.plist).  You probably know that you can select which columns display in view options.  Perhaps a temporary workaround would be to switch off other visible columns to display only name or name and one other preferred column to increase space available.  However, myself and another suspect this the problems I described as a bug, and I would have to think your issue is part of that bug.  It seems all related, no? For example, in my Downloads folder, I select to hide "Date Modified", show "Date Added", and arrange by "Date Added".  Maybe it will still show if I close the window and reopen the Downloads folder, maybe it will not, maybe it will change completely to Icon View despite have "always open in list view" being selected in view options.  In any case, after a restart, it will revert back to list view, with "Date Modified" showing and being arranged by "Name".

  • Finder list view name column keeps resizing!

I mainly use list view in Finder, and I mainly use windows (as opposed to fullscreen) because I like dragging and dropping between them (dragging and dropping in fullscreen with tabs is rather cumbersome).
Anyway, the name column keeps resizing on me, going from what I have it set to (usually double-clicked to make it fit all filenames) to suddenly being small enough that all the other columns fit in the window without a horizontal scroll bar. This has been happening ever since I upgraded to Yosemite and happens every time I open a new Finder window, expand a folder, move a file, etc. It's incredibly frustrating!
I was surprised to not find much about this problem mentioned around the web, so I imagine it must be some setting or something specific to my machine. Any help in figuring out how to make it stop doing this would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • Date Modified in iTunes 8

I've recently been doing a lot of metadata maintenance in iTunes, and as such, have been using some smart playlists filtered by Date Modified and sorting my main list view by Date Modified, as well. I noticed, upon upgrading to iTunes 8, that the Date Modified field is no longer getting reliably updated like it had been. A lot of the time now, the date won't update until I select the track again in the list view, and then it jumps to the top of the list and disappears from the smart playlist.
In addition, last night I replaces the album art on three albums, each as a group. I then synced my iPhone, and now notice that today, after performing that sync, only some of those tracks have the new artwork, while the rest have the old. That takes this from minor annoyance to performance-hindering bug, when it affects the sync mechanism.

I'm not 100% sure but when the finder window was constantly on the focus of the folder that contained the file in question, that's when the date would take time to update. However, since changing my workflow slightly, I now have several finder tabs open and I've found it changes immediately; or at least, it's updated as my focus has moved to another tab and then back to the tab containing the folder. Need more observation to confirm this though.

  • Can I set all folders to the same column with in Finder list view?

I set Finder to display 4 columns in list view: Name, Date Modified, Size, Kind. Is there a way to apply the width of those columns to all folders? Column width is not affected by the option "use as defaults" in the view options.

I've just seen that somebody else asked the same question lately:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22368987#22368987
There seems to be no way to do what I want to do.

  • Items "date modified" column when viewing files as list in finder

I'm not really sure if I can change this viewing option, but i will give it a try:
when viewing files as list in finder, "yesterday" items "date modified" column shows up with the term "yesterday", while this does not happen for "today" items, where what shows up is just today's date and not the term "today".
I found this rather confusing, since it is not immediate: i.e. if I want to check for items modified today at a glance, i need to pick today's date from a ist with a number of different dates. As a matter of fact, it's a way easier when checking for yesterday's items.
    Suggestions anyone?
    Thanks!

toygal -- welcome to the Aperture user-to-user forum. iPhoto was designed with you in mind. Aperture is 100x more complicated (and no faster). I strongly recommend that you revert to iPhoto and use it. Compared to Aperture, it will bring you more pleasure and cause you much less frustration. Whoever told you that Aperture is faster not only was wrong, they failed to take into consideration the hours that you would have to practice to become comfortable with it.
Here are some threads which briefly touch on the difference between iPhoto and Aperture -- use the search to find many more.

  • Finder in Column View always auto arranged by Date Modified

My preferred default view is always Column View with Arranged By Kind, Sort By Name.
Many times when I navigate around folders, it automatically switch to Arrange By Date Modified. This is very annoying, I have to either go back to previous folder and back again, or right click to switch back to Arrange By Kind.
This has been happening for long time, not just in Maverick but previous versions too.

No solutions for this known bug?

  • Finder Date Modified, Created, etc. Wording - in German

I am observing the following problem in Lion Finder:
    - wording denoting "Relative dates" is in German now instead of English, for example "Heute" instead of "Today", "Gestern" instead of "Yesterday". etc.
    - the "Language" tab in "Language & Text" is set in the same order as before:
    English
    German
    - the "Format" tab in "Language & Text" is set as before to "Switzerland (German)"
Is it a bug or strange feature?

    sanjempet --
    Whew, that's a relief!
But as for your workaround solution: All it will achieve is altering the created and modified dates to RIGHT NOW. What I'm looking to do is to alter the modification/creation dates to some point in the past.
I'm not doing this for any nefarious reason. I just like to organize my work files chronologically according to when each project was initiated, but sometimes I forget to gather the disparate documents all into one folder right at the beginning, and as a result, sometimes after I finish a job, I will create a new folder to permanently house all the files in an old project, and when that folder is places in a bigger "completed projects" folder and then is organized by "Date created" or "Date modified" in list view, it is out-of-order chronologically because the creation and modification dates of that particular project folder reflect when the folder was created (i.e. today), and not when the files inside the folder were created (i.e. weeks or months ago).
The simplest solution would simply to be able to back-date the folder's creation or modification date to match the date that the project actually started!

  • Import tracks in album order when viewing by Date Added

I've seen some older posts regarding this, but nothing recently. Here's my issue, and I can't believe more people aren't up in arms about it:
I keep iTunes sorted by Date Added, so that my latest stuff is at the top -- pretty normal for a music listener, right?
Say I have a folder of mp3s and I drag them into iTunes. For a long time in years past, even though you're dragging the entire album in, they would just get added in the order that iTunes wanted, rather than in album order. Then, at some point recently, I assume after an update to iTunes (?), they magically started being added in the correct order. I was really happy about this, as the random order entire albums were added in was extremely annoying.
Now something's happened and the old behavior is back.
Does anyone know how to drag an album's worth of mp3s into iTunes and have iTunes load them in in *album* order, so that when you view by Date Added, they show your album as it would look on the back of a cd or whatever, in the correct order?

This won't directly answer your question, but I find that if I make a playlist of the album, then they appear in the correct order in that playlist.

  • Finder window date added date modified show date time always

Is there a preference setting to have a finder window with Date Added and Date Modified columns enabled to always show the date and time? Currently, the column information is dynamic, like just providing a time where you infer Today, or one column does show the date and time but the other only shows the date, or it reads Today, 12:31pm.
I want every window when displaying Date Added or Date Modified columns to always, consistently show the date and time, e.g. 3/15/14, 7:31AM.
    Aloha and Mahalo!

I found half of the answer: View:Show View Options - Deselect Use Relative Dates.
Now I just need a solution to always show the time and not only the date.
Curiously, when you initially enable a column in a Finder window, it shows both the date and time; however when you return to the window after closing it, you lose the time of day on Date Added, but not on Date Modified. -- Bug or Feature?

  • Lion: Finder: Column View: Date Last Opened is not show correctly

    Hi Folks,
I have upgrade my macs from 10.6.8 to 10.7.
I am using the column view in the finder and I noticed that the
Date Last Opened is not show correctly in the preview column.
If I use the the list view and show the column Date Last Opened
all dates are correct. Using the column view, the Date Last Opened
allways matches the Date Last Modified.
The attached screenshot shows an example with the same
file at in both views mentiond above.
I have noticed this problem with internal and external drives
using the filesystem Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Is there way known to fix this behavior. In Snow Leopard it worked fine.
    Thank you for your support.

Same here, however I found a strange work around.
Go to your applications folder, for instance. Click the gear icon, go to Arrange By, then select Date Last Opened. It will correctly show the last opened time and arrange them accordingly. Switch back to arrange by name and the last opened date reverts back.
    It's not a bug, it's a feature!

Not a problem when using iPhoto on a Mac, which the transfer of photos is primarily based on - not manually managing photo storage as seems to be common with Windoze.
The same should be available with a supported photo management app on a PC.
