Finder Search -- complex search in a particular folder

This is embarrassing!
I want to use Finder
     File-->Find
to do complex searches (e.g. using "Kind", "Created Date", "Contents", etc.) on a specific folder.  I want to use the Finder "Find" GUI, not the Spotlight "command line".
I think I need to discover how to add additional places, folders,  to the search location header of the Finder Search window, which now contains (by default?)
     Search:   This Mac    "My HD"
In other words, if my target folder is called "Fum"  I think I need to see
Search:   This Mac    "My HD"   "Fum"
Then I need to select the right-most item to tell the Finder Search "just search the folder named 'Fum'".  After that, I enter the search parameters.
But I cannot figure out how to do this.    I tried drag-and-dropping folder "Fum" on this line.  I tried Command-F with "Fum" selected. I tried enabling the left tool-bar, getting "Fum" in the list, then  highlighting "Fum".
D'oh!   It's such a stupid question that ... the obvious web searches are useless.
So... how  is this done?
I feel like I'm totally missing some basic assumpation of the current 10.7 Finder search metaphor.  Please feel free to fill me in.   (Why isn't there a "+" button at the far right of the Search locations header, instead of what I see now, only a "Save" and a "-" button?  That would seem the logical way to add locations to search.)
TIA

Whew, sorry...
[A tedious description of various experiments, failing attempts to sort this problem omitted here.]
I note that Finder Preferences ---> Advanced offers 3 choices for searches, schematically:
     When performing a search:
      (1) Search This Mac
      (2) Search the Current Folder
      (3) Use the Previous Search Scope
[Another tedious description of more experiments omitted here.]
Just a moment... Selecting alternative (3) does the trick for me!   I can now restrict the search directory to "Fum".  I just need to:
a)  Choose Finder search preference (3), which to my mind implements "Search the Current Folder" and NOT "Use the Previous Search Scope".
b) Interpret "Current Folder" as the folder open and at front.
Life is now good!   <heavy sigh>

Just go to App store and type in what you want in the search box.   Say, apps for word processors, Anti virus apps, Games apps and so on.   You could also go via Google with a similar approach and lastly, the system divides up particular subjects in any event ...  under the term Categories.
Having said that, the system isn't a mind reader.   It's up to you to refine what you've  been presented with.

    Nevin,
Be great if we could know the version of Portal. For Rel. 1, here's the query
    select id,masterthingid from wwv_things
    where siteid = &site
    and cornerid = &corner
    &site - Content Area id
    &corner - Folder id
if you don't know the folder id, use
select id from wwv_corners where siteid = &site
    and name = &folder
Hope this helps. I have run into this situation before. Usually, the culprits were
    one of the following:
    1. Junk Characters in description of item (caused due to Copy-Paste)
    2. Special Characters in the File name

  • Smart Folders - How do I set it to search one particular folder only?

I want to set up a Smart Folder that will basically do the following:
1: Look in folder called "Client Work".
2: Find files modified in the last 1 week.
That's it. Point 2 I can easily manage, but I can't figure out how on earth I am supposed to set the Smart Folder to only apply its searches to one particular folder on my hard drive? I really can't figure out which option under "Other..." I am supposed to be using.
I'm sure there must be a simple solution though -- can someone please tell me what it is?
    Thanks!

On the locations bar in the Finder Search window (where it says Servers Computer Home Others...) pick others and navigate to (with the + button), or drag the folder you want in the window and make sure it is the only folder selected. You will then have another button on the location bar Folder "Client Work". Select that button and save the search as a Smart Folder.

  • Unhidden files are not revealed in Finder search

When I use the Finder "Search" window, my Library folder, System folder and folders therein are not revealed, even though I can manually locate them though the Finder's tree. As far as I can tell, these files are not hidden and do not have special security settings. They do not show up in Spotlight either. What in the world is going on? I never had these problems with older versions of OS X.
Thanks to anyone who can assist!

Spotlight doesn't normally show files from those folders because those folders do not contain files that should normally be accessed directly. Rather than clutter the search results, system files are suppressed unless you specifically ask for them. Do that by including a criterion in your search to 'include system files'. You might have to add that option to the search criterion pop-up by choosing "Other...". Check "System Files" and then choose "Include".

  • Finder search shows deleted "phantom" files

I had recently attempted to uninstall Native Instruments FM8, and in an effort to do so, ran searches through my system Library folder and my user Library folder to find anything related to the software and remove them.  Found around 100 preset sound files related to FM8, sent them to the trash and emptied the trash (not securely).  Then after removing every file as listed on NI's website, restarting my computer, and running another Finder search in my Library folder, the sound files I had deleted earlier appear in the Finder search! However, right-clicking the files and selecting Get Info shows no directory for the file, and the files are unable to be deleted or have permissions modified.
I have already used the Disk Utility to repair disk permissions, but these phantom files still remain in my Finder search !
    Help appreciated!

You probably have some corruption in your Spotlight index.  Try reindexing:

  • Finder search in specific folder only - how to?

I am a PC expert user switching to mac...
I really like the mac, but the help needs to be greatly expanded. I am sure it is simple, but it is not intuitive, and help is worthless on this issue.
In finder, I want to search a particular folder for a particular extension. I have spend a lot of time googling, checking help, and I don't see it.
The closest I can come is
kind -> folders (what does Kind mean hear? Not intuitive)
    File Extension -> ".doc"
but I don't want to search all of folders, just a folder under documents.
I am sure it is simple, I just need to know the secret handshake to make it work.
    Thanks
    bob

Everything about a Mac ought to be intuitive, but in the case of the latest iteration of Spotlight such is, unfortunately, not the case. Almost everything about the GUI for Spotlight is wrong-headed, counter-intuitive and/or backwards. You might get some useful tips for using it effectively from the article I wrote on Leopard's version of Spotlight:
    http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/Leopard/leospot.html
Be sure to click the link in the last line of the Spotlight section to see more detailed examples of using Spotlight and Find.

Ok u may not require a coding
    But u req configuration
U should first make a search option set
    Link: [Search Option set|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/cc/f4e77ddef1244380b06fee5f8b892a/frameset.htm]
Then u need 2 duplicate a KM Command by the name Search From here
and customize it to include the Search Option that u have created

  • Find "Other" search fails when "User" folder selected - bug?

I have several partitions on my disk.
On my boot partition, I have 2 .aiff files in a sub-directory of my Documents folder. Using the Finder's "Find" command (not spotlight),
select search for File Type "other" and "AIFF Audio" from dropdown
select the "Users" folder as the only folder to search - "Find" shows no files
select only "Home" to search - finds them.
select both "Home" and "Users" to search it doesn't find them.
select the partition (Called "OSX") it finds them.
select partition "OSX", folder "Users" and "Home" - it finds them
also - I can get Finder to reset with double-click:
With a search that finds them, select the file so its path appears in the panel at the bottom of the window.
Modify the Find to search only "Users". The window clears and no files show, however the path of the previously selected file remains.
Double click on the path name, the Finder resets ( - in other words, quits, closing all open FInder windows, then restarts without reopening any of those Finder windows)
Is this a bug or what?

In short, try re-indexing your drive or home folder. You can do his by opening Preferences->Spotlight, select the Privacy tab. Add your hard drive or your home folder to the list by drag and drop or hit the plus symbol at the bottom. Wait a second and remove the drive or folder. It will take several hours for the drive or folder to re-index but the find/search command will start working correctly right away.
    Hope this helps.

  • To search only images in a particular folder of picture library using content search webpart.

I have Images library where i am storing images in different folders.I need my content search webpart to search and display images in a particular folder in Images Library. For ex: i need to if my Picture Library Name is 'Images' a folder inside that is
'Travel' which is having some images.I need my content search webpart to pick images from 'Travel' folder only.Any pointers to this will be helpful.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you want to search images in a particular folder via content search web part.
When we use the search crawl the items in the images library, it crawls the items and folder with the following URL.
    For folder: http://sp13/PublishingImages/Folder1.
    For Items:
    http://sp13/PublishingImages/Forms/DispForm.aspx?ID=itemID
It not crawls the items as the path
http://sp13/PublishingImages/Folder1/Item, then we could not use this path to retrieve the items in the folder.
As a workaround, we can create a custom field in the image library, such as a choice type field named
Folders(it contains the folder names), when we create a image, we set the folder name in this field.
Note: we should new a managed property manually to match the Crawled property.
Then we can use this field to filter the items in a particular folder as below, it works like a charm in  my environment.
    path:"http://sp13/PublishingImages"   Folders=Folder1

  • Spotlight doesn't find search results in .HTML file contents

When I use Spotlight to search, it doesn't find any .HTML file contents. If I rename an .HTML file to use a .TXT extension, the contents are found. Is there a way to enable Spotlight to find contents in .HTML files?

I remembered that used to be problem, so I just checked on my local version of my site, and Spotlight found the files on the basis of content without a problem. So I took a look at my installed mdimporters in /Library/Spotlight, to see what may have led to this happy turn of events. I thought perhaps the iWeb mdimporter might be doing it, but was unable to find a reference to HTML in its type declarations. I then took a look at in /System/Library/Spotlight and discovered that RichText.mdimporter has a declaration for public.html as a content type. You should have that mdimporter installed by default, but you might take a look to make sure it is there.
If the mdimporter is there, but the html files aren't being indexed, it could be that whatever program you are using to create them isn't giving them the appropriate content type. I code by hand using TextEdit, which saves them with the following metadata entry:
    kMDItemContentType = "public.html"
    kMDItemContentTypeTree = (
    "public.html",
    "public.text",
    "public.data",
    "public.item",
    "public.content"
They are then evidently indexed without problem by the RichText.mdimporter. You might try opening one of your html docs in TextEdit (as plain text), resave, and see if Spotlight then picks up the content of the file. Of course, the content means the words that people see when they look at the page in a browser. If the content you are talking about is stuff that is inside an html tag, you are out of luck. I know of NO way to get Spotlight to find that. EasyFind will though, but it is a brute force search and will take awhile, even when restricted to a particular folder.

  • How do I search for a bookmark folder by name in Safari?

How do I search for a particular bookmark folder in Mac Safari 7.06?  Since there seems to be no automated way to sort the folders (as in other browsers), in a long list of folders, a particular one can be hard to spot.  Yes yes, very similar to a previous question of mine.  -jan

Click "Help" menu in the Safari menu bar and enter the folder name in the search box.

  • Finder search bug? No results if 'Search' field is blank.

I can't determine if this is a bug or is simply a change in Finder search behavior (for the worse, IMO) in 10.8.
In the Finder, when I select 'File>>Find' (or hit ⌘-F) and then select the current folder from the top of the search parameters, no files appear in the search results if the 'Search' (for filename) field at the top of the window is blank even though the only other search parameter is 'Kind is Any'.
If I enter text in the 'Search' field, matching results start to appear.
In 10.7, I saw different behavior. In the absence of text in the Search field, the Finder would simply return results matching the other parameters and ignore the Search field.
With the new behavior, there doesn't seem to be any way to construct a saved search based solely on other parameters (kind, date, file label, etc) without specifying some filename parameter as well. Of course, I can work around the problem by using something like 'NOT xxx!@#$%' in the Search field, but this approach is klugy at best.
Anyone else see this? Bug? Deliberate change in Finder behavior?

Yes the report ESH_TEST_SEARCH returns no material.
So should I suspend the indexing and reschedule with with real time indexing ? I am not sure whether we choose real time indexing in the first time.
What about the authorizations, I see USER_AUTHORITY object is activealready.
