Finder search function causing crash

my ibook 700 G3 / OS 10.3 is consistently crashing upon use of the search function in the finder window.. the screen goes dim and I get the "restart your computer" message
I've tried trashing the finder plist file, but the behavior continues..
otherwise, everything seems to run fine..all updates installed...
any ideas?

Hello Again Lee!
Perhaps, if you used the "G4 tower" discs, to install Panther 10.3.x in the 700 G3, as you stated HERE, in This Topic, you are now discovering problems, that were created by that installation.
Or, if the discs are not at fault, and there are remnants of Spotlight, which is a Tiger 10.4.x application, you may have not accomplished, a complete Erase & Install, of Panther 10.3.x.

  • Why the Finder Search-Function is corrupted in Mavericks so that I cannot open any file after searching it?

Finder Search-Function is troubled / corrupted / misfunctioning
When keying in a search word the files are selected properly, yet not shown with details. Furthermore you cannot click and open any file. Also sorting is not possible.
Anyone else has such a problem and has figured out on how to resolve it?
(Spotlight works properly and is somehow a spare solution).
There seem to be many basic problems with the finder in Mavericks, this problem unfortunately has not been resolved also with the last software-release 10.9.2.
The quality strategy of Apple has to be questioned: I do not need 200 NEW functions, but I need the previous basic functions STILL working!
    Thank you!

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by logging out/in and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer ones.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
You might need to redo the View settings after an update.
Resolved the Problem! Thanks to Eric and Leonie

    Hey Reoh,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
If searching for files in Finder doesn't return any results, try using the steps in this article to reindex the Spotlight search index of your MacBook Pro hard drive:

  • Organize search results in spotlight's finder search function ?

    Hello.
The search results in the finder search window (cmd-f from within finder)—is there a way to organize them just like the files in any finder window (name, date, size, kind … ) ?
(I guess I should add that I of course know there is some organization offered by the sideboard on the right in the actual spotlight window. But this one offers other and in may cases less effective criteria.)
Would be very useful. Thanks a lot.

If the ⌘F search results are in a "brushed metal" window in the "Finder", the window should have buttons for "Icon" and "List" view near the top left edge, just like a regular "Finder" window (unless you have customized your "Finder" toolbar to remove those buttons). Switching to "List" view should allow the full choice of sort criteria to be selected from "View Options" (⌘J).
If the window is in "aqua" mode (no toolbar or sidebar), it is still possible to switch to "List" view from the menu bar - "View" > "as List" (⌘2).

  • Lookup/Find/Search Function

    Hi All,
I'm sure this may have been asked before but I would like some help if possible. I've got the following dataset:
I tried to use the VLookUp Function in the following way: =VLookUp(B2,$A$596:$B$851,1,FALSE) however it isn't working in the desired
way. Column F can be ignored for the time being.
I need to search for the Customer Number in ColumnA to see if it Appears in the Account Number in ColumnB. If it doesn't appear then
an #N/A or #REF! or whatever will appear however if there is a match it will show the relevant code.
I.e. in Column D2 It would show 24/7, in D3 it would show #N/A or #REF!, in D4 it would show #N/A or #REF!, in D5 it would show Wind
and so on and so forth. Is anyone able to help with this?

    In D2:
    =IF(ISNUMBER(MATCH(B2,$A$2:$A$596,0)),B2,"")
    In F2:
    =IF(ISERROR(MATCH(B2,$A$2:$A$596,0)),B2,"")
Fill down from D2 and F2 to row 851.

  • Can't find search function for this forum?

Am I blind or something, or is this site working as well as soundtrack pro? Where is the search bar?

    I agree!
I've just joined this forum to look for specific answers, and searching is the first and +most necessary+ thing I want to do...
How is not having this feature improving the performance of the forum? Is the hope that Apple will put vast numbers of users off by being annoyingly non-functional and nonsensical?!!

  • Search Function in Finder is not working

I'm a MacBook Pro User. The problem which I'm facing is with Finder Search function
Its search function is not showing any result. I tried with the know file name and with the known location, but its search command is not working.
eg: I created a doc file and saved it on desktop, then in finder search box I used the same name of the file which I saved on desktop, but its not showing any result.
I have huge amount of data on HD and I want to locate one file which is making my life miserable, and I can not bear my mac to add insult to my injury.
    PLEASE HELP

Add me to the list of confused.
Just purchased a used macbookpro - working very well in all aspects, except finder and spotlight are not working. Thanks to this site I am working around the problem with easyfind, but would prefer to work straight from finder.

  • Why is Flash Help/Search function so worthless?

Is it just me or is the Flash help function the worst help
    function ever?
In other software you get the results you were looking for in
    seconds
in Flash everytime you do a search you get like a hundred
    different
search results and usually none cover the topic you were
    looking for.
Its often easier to search on google than use the internal
    help function
Why is it so hard to only display relevant results?
Could anyone teach me how to use the search function cause I
    dont want
to read 1000 pages just to find out the difference between
    align and distribute
    options etc.

  • Mail find/search not working

I have found that Mail has gone a bit bonkers. First I lost a bunch of important emails when moving the messages to a different mailbox (they are simply gone). Now the find/search function is completely erratic. The same search terms will sometimes turn up messages, sometimes nothing.
I have deleted the preferences, rebuilt the mailboxes multiple times, even deleted the envelope file so mail would rebuild the entire index from scratch. Also I've repaired permissions. The search function is simply erratic still.
I even had an issue after deleting the preference files where the custom tool bar would revert back to the default one when starting up Mail again... a reboot (and perhaps running various scripts through Onyx seemed to have nipped that one in the bud).
What is going on here? Anyone else havinfg these issues? How to fix it?
    I am running Mavericks, OS X 10.9.1

... no fix for this problem?

  • T/X model SORTing Find/Search results from Most Current Entry

Have the Palm T/X model, and use the FIND/search function constantly.
The results always come up from the earliest (oldest) entry to the most current.
This is a major league pain-in-the-butt especially when there are tons of entries to go thru to get to the most current date.
Is there any way to sort the FIND results so that they show from most Recent entry to the oldest.
This would be a HUGE Help.
    Thx!
    Post relates to: Palm TX

There is a pulsing, reddish dot in the middle of the
blue light but on the hard drive itself, I don't see
any "lights" in any "menu bar".
It's at blue circle with a white Q-shaped symbol at the right end of your menu bar.
If you dare to use the terminal application (can be found in the utilities folder) you can use the following command to re-index that drive. Start Terminal and type (or paste) the following line and hit enter:
    sudo mdutil -E "/Volumes/xxx/"
Replace "xxx" with the name of Your drive! If there is a space in that name type it like "/Volumes/My\ Drive/"! You will be prompted for Your admin password to proceed.

  • Finder: Search in Specific Places...

    Hallo!
    I've read this doc:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107005
Do you know how to specify multiple places to search in for Finder Search Engine?

You cannot directly via the normal Finder search function. You can select any folder in which to search. Selecting a folder that contains other folders will result in all folders being searched within the folder as well as the folder itself.
For complicated searches you need to be able to program a query such as you will find described in Spotlight Query Programming Guide. This is a bit out of my area of expertise. You also might look here, Spotlight Tips for additional information and sources.

  • Workaround: SWVMS16 Crash when using Camera Search Function

When using the camera search functionality, SWVMS16 may crash.  The issue is caused when non-camera UPnP devices on the network send out large packet sizes.  Upcoming video monitoring releases will fix this issue.
Workaround: If the issue occurs, add your cameras manually to the SWVMS16.

  • Crash on search function for HTML Help file (.chm) when connected to a Visual C++ application

Crash on search function for HTML Help file (.chm) when
connected to a Visual C++ application
I use the RH_ShowHelp API command to connect a HTML Help file
(.chm file generated by RoboHelp Word X 5) to my Visual C++
application. My application is able to call up this HTML help file
in context-sensitive mode and everything is working great in the

I enter a KEYWORD for search) in the Search panel.
I got an error that said “Unhandled exception in

I am able to execute this .chm file by itself and the search

  • The "Search" function box doesn't find things that are there! Why?!

The "Search" function box doesn't find things that are there! Why? Eg: It doesnt show all my Sent and Received emails, but it will find an email that I half wrote and deleted. Unsure why or how to explain more fully.
I also don't understand if I type in "James email" or "J" into the search box and all the J / James stuff appears but it doesn't show the emails I know have been sent and I know are somewhere because I rang "James" up to check, but the search box shows random thing I am NOT looking for, even if I type in fully what I am looking for and test it by typing in full titles of things.
It also doesn't store all my sent emails in "Sent" box. Confused! I'm not sure if the "Search" box just isn't up to the job or if it is broken / i'm doing something wrong? Maybe the email address I use isn't set up properly?

This can happen sometimes if the cache is not cleared correctly when items are not deleted from your device.
The only solution to this is to do a restore to clean out the cache file.

  • How to get the search function to find the correct files

i have long wondered if it was me or the system, but i am very clear finally that the search function *****.
    1) i try to find a word in a document.
    2) the system shows me several possibilities. chapters 16, 18, 21, etc...
    3) i then bring up each one individually and search each one. some of them DON'T EVEN HAVE THE WORD OR PHRASE IN THEM THAT I AM SEARCHING FOR. what's THAT all about?
    4) so i look at my real life book or search on the web. voila! there it is. chapter 14.
    5) i try again. both finder search and spotlight. NEITHER SHOW ME THE CORRECT DOCUMENT. neither shows me chapter 14. they still show 16, 18, 21, etc.
this has always been VERY mysterious.
it has happened hundreds of times over the years.
i am VERY clear now it is NOT me and it IS the system.
what use is it to get a list of documents that do not have the correct criteria and NOT get the document that has the correct criteria?
    is leopard as sucky?

    thanks for your response.
perhaps you don't use it as much as i do?
i have been cursing this search feature for years.
i often try to find exact words in a particular book
that i have on my computer as .doc files.
and it often does not find what i want and it often
finds what i do not want. so i am very confused.
i went to system preferences. opened spotlight.
there is nothing listed under 'don't search here'...
and i have only a few things listed under 'search here.
i do not understand how that link could help my
    problem.
when i search for the word inside a document or
inside a pdf, the programs find the word. but
    finder/spotlight does not find it.
    i still need more help.
    and thanks for your response.
