Finder search opening in new window and sidebar gone

Hi, just wondering if anyone could shed some light on this cause I'm quite lost.
First of when hitting Command-F in the Finder it opens up in a new window, I'm pretty sure it didn't do this before. Opening folders does not open in new windows. Using the "Go" menu also has the same behaviour. However it's not really a big issue.
Secondly and this is what's irritating me the most, the sidebar disappears when doing this. Toggling the sidebar and closing the window and starting a new search makes no difference, still no sidebar.
I have done some pretty major changes to my system recently, and even if I don't really see why it would have effects like this (havn't noticed any other changes). What I have done is that I have moved /Users/* to a separate volume and is mounting the volume as /Users using fstab.
I tried experimenting a little with com.apple.finder.plist and removing the file (i.e. letting finder recreate), this caused the sidebar to appear, however adding:
<key>CreateDesktop<key>
<false />
Made it disappear again, freaky if you ask me... I have had the desktop off for ages without any problems so don't see why it wont work any longer. Or if it only has to do with this key and not also others.
Property list is here (for one month) if it helps: http://pastebin.com/TYGsWj9T

Okay, this is wierd (and embarrasing), everything suddenly started working again after days of not working... Did nothing I can think of, only thing that I have done actively is that I have defaulted property list and restarted Finder multiple times. I even reverted back to the old property list and it still worked, maybe some cache problem? (which I didn't think of till now) but otherwise I don't know, thanks for reading my question at least .

    Question
When I am NOT private browsing Firefox will not allow me to delete or change the website address in the location bar. My only remedy is to open a new window and search in google then click the link to that site through google. When I swap to private browsing firefox allows me to anter the website address directly into the location bar - but this is a slow [prcess to swap back and forth - also by dint of using private browsing I loose my website information.

  • Launch Finder Without Opening a New Window

    Hello,
I'm making an application that resizes the icons on the desktop, and I would like to know if it's possible to launch the the Finder without it automatically opening a new Finder window.
My, Applescripts look something like this right now..
    on «event coVScliI» theObject
(do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder DesktopViewOptions -dict IconSize -integer 70")
    (do shell script "killall Finder")
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    end tell
    end «event coVScliI»
The reason for my killing the Finder in the first place is because it needs to be restarted for the changes to take affect.

    Hi,
If you don't mind using [GUI Scripting|http://www.macosxautomation.com/applescript/uiscripting/index.html], then the following script should relaunch the Finder without opening any new window (at least it does on Mac OS X 10.6.2) :
    tell application "Finder" to activate
    tell application "System Events"
    key code 53 using {option down, command down} -- ⌥⌘⎋
click (row 1 of table 1 of scroll area 1 of window 1 of process "loginwindow" whose value of text field 1 is "Finder")
    keystroke return
    keystroke return
    keystroke "w" using command down -- ⌘W
    end tell
(If the script doesn't work properly on your computer, first try adding a “delay” statement before the problematic line of code, for example “delay 0.2”.)

Gnome-shell issue. You can disable desktop management as a temporary fix, but the next gnome-shell update will fix the problem.

  • Open a new window and send a parameter

    Hi
I wish somebody can helpme do the following, I have a table on one page, let's say the main page, and this table has a button which opens a new window, I did this using the onclick event of the button in the jsp source:
    onclick = "window.open('../productos/editaproducto.jsp','mywindow','width=800,height=600,scrollbars=yes')"
this works just fine, what I can't figure out is how to send the id of the row of the button the user clicked because I need to use it in the new window, I'd appreciate so much If any body can tell me or give me a clue of how to do this.
    Thank's
    Yesenia.

  • How do I disable finder from opening a new window upon mount?

When an external drive is mounted (such as an iPod in disk mode) Finder opens a new window showing the root of the new drive.
I realise why this happens, but is there any way of disabling this feature?.
    Cheers,
    Ebsy

It seems that there is a special flag that can be set or cleared on the volume to control that behavior. There is an Apple developer article about it, with source code, that might help.
    http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2005/qa1449.html
I have to believe that someone has packaged up that code into a utility that can be found.

  • Opening a New Window and Tracking that session

I want to open a new IE popup window form my session -based application, the newly launched page is outside the current domain say a page in the internet.Does the session cookies are carried from the parent window to this newly opened window ?
If not how can i make it available in the child window?

Anything like this is going to provoke security reactions, since it's the kind of thing that lends itself to malicious use.
You could consider using frames, where you wrap the other-domain window in your own, but it's likely to provoke security warnings.
An approach which is more challenging, but likely to produce cleaner results, is for your server, itself, to make URL connections to the other domain and retrieve the data, then process and probably reformat it, including it in your own page.
The down side is you can be tripped up by changes in the third-party site's layout etc.
If you check with the other domain, you may find that it can deliver results in a more program-friendly format, such as XML.

  • Can't disable finder folders open in new window

In Finder Prefs I changed it to always open folders in new window. Later I decided to switch it back so I unchecked it. It still opens folders in a new window. Obviously, I've tried several times, restarted many times, etc.  Suggestions?

Exactly. Since the OS stores all code that runs the machine in RAM, you need to restart any app that you make changes to for it to use the new settings. Since the Finder is always running (it operates the Desktop and other things), relaunching via the Dock option forces it to dump its code from RAM and repopulating it with the new settings.

  • Having multiple tabs open in one window, and then opening a new window and closing it, will close the newly opened window, but it will want to close the other original window with the multiple tabs as well.

This only happens if the original window has multiple tabs, and the new window has only ONE tab at the moment you close it.
Also, the problem only occurs when TWO windows of firefox are open. So opening up a 3rd window, and then closing it, will not give you any problems. The interaction occurs between two windows of firefox only.

This can happen if you drag a tab slightly down in the browser window while clicking.
Firefox has a feature called tear-off tabs
You can detach a tab from the current window and open it in a new window by dragging a tab in the browser window.
You can also do this via the right-click context menu of a tab: Move to New Window
You can drag that tab back to the tab bar in the original window to undo that detaching.

  • Opening a new window and closing it in controller

I need to implement a functionality wherein when I click on a link, the custom page should open in a new window. Also on this page, there would be a OK button. On click of this button, I need to insert a record into the database and close this window and also pass a parameter to the previous screen. How to open a page in a new window? Also after inserting the record into the database, how do I close the window in Controller code? How to pass a parameter to previous screen?

For this you have to use javascript. The controler can't close a browser window.

  • I'm getting a not-quite crash in which I lose ability to interact with the window at all. Is there any way to fix the problem itself? All I can do is an inconvenient "fix" in which I open a new window, and it works in the second window for some reason.

I'm experiencing a not-quite-crash every time I attempt to open firefox on my new computer. What happens is that the menu bar (which I prefer to have visible instead of that orange single-button menu) has all the letters on it turn gray, and I lose my ability to click anywhere on the page, including to close it. If I attempt to close the page via the taskbar it doesn't let me. It does, however, let me open new windows via the taskbar which don't have the same problem, which allows for an easy-but-inconvenient fix. I've tried it out and it does not have the same problem in Safe Mode. As a result of not being a "true" crash I can't give a crash ID, so you won't be able to trace it that way, sorry.

''Problem:'' For whatever reason, NoScript is stopping Runescape Community Toolbar from working properly which freezes your first Firefox window.
''Fix:'' Uninstall the toolbar. Disable NoScript. Install the toolbar. Add your RS account to it and make sure it works, then Enable NoScript again.
EDIT: Posted a fix earlier that was wrong. Corrected to the right one, sorry ^_^ Answer was on Runescape Forums.

  • HT201209 The buy button in itunes does not open  a new window and allow me to buy a purchase

    Hello
We are having problems with iTunes. We have redeemed a voucher which does appear £25 but we can not Buy a purchase. The new window does not open like it used to.
We can not download the free singles either.
This has been happening for 2 weeks.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

Middle-click or click the scroll-wheel on a hyperlink has always opened a '''new Tab'''. Any chance you had an add-on that changed that action, and now that add-on is disabled or incompatible?

  • Firefox opens a new window and moves the active tab to it. How do I stop this?

Got multiple tabs open. Firefox suddenly closes the tab I'm working on (this seems to happen when I'm scrolling) and moves it to a new window, shifting the focus to a previously inactive tab. What a swell feature! How can I get rid of it?

Firefox 3.5/6 versions have a feature called tear-off tabs.
You can detach a tab from the current window and open it in a new window by dragging a tab in the browser window.
You can drag that tab back to the tab bar in the original window to undo that detaching.

  • Links that should open in a new tab now open in new windows and I don't know why.

All of a sudden my Firefox browser has started opening links that would usually open in a new tab come up in a new window. "Open new windows in a new tab instead" is still selected as it has always been, and unless someone has changed a setting on my laptop without my knowing I am pretty sure that I have not made this change myself.
