Finder showing incorrect amount of free space

After the recent Mountain Lion update, my Finder now shows an incorrect amount of free space.
I have a 500GB hard drive, and I have about 150GB free.
After the update, finder says I have 478.4 GB free?
That looks like the total capacity, after you account for system software. I've done a PRAM and SCM reset, disk verification and repair, but still no joy.
Any thoughts? Is it a bug in the update?

This is probably like the issue that I was having on my MacBook Pro. If you are using Time Machine on a laptop it stores the diffs in a file on your hard drive. This action can be disabled with the terminal command
sudo tmutil disablelocal
This turns the local Time Machine off. It is up to you if you want to do this, but Finder shows this space as unused since it can be overwritten when needed. It saved me over a hundred GBs of space.

Does anyone know why Finder tells me that the amount of free space on my Mac is 46.53 GB while Disk Utility says there are only 31.89 GB of free space left?

Just found the solution in another thread: the "problem" seems to be the local Time Machine Snapshots. Finder ignores them, Disk Utility doesn't.

Finder reports wrong amount of free space

Finder is reporting the wrong amount of free space on all my drives. It's not from time machine local backups, because I've disabled those. In fact, it's reporting MORE free space than there should be! In all cases, Disk Utility shows the correct amount. (So does the Terminal command df.)
eg:
external 120GB hard drive (USB) - finder says 137.83GB free (more than the drive can hold, nice) - disk util says 70 used 49.9 free... better
external 1TB (firewire) - finder says 276.66GB free - disk util says 783.72 used 216.15 free
internal 120GB SSD - finder says 108.32GB - disk util says 78.6GB used, 40.5 free
Anyway to fix Finder?

I noticed the same problem. I assumed it was from Time Machine's local backups (which exactly account for the space discrepancy between Finder and Disk Utility on my machine). But, as you say, you've disabled Time Machine local "snapshots." I can only assume you deleted the local backups (to free up the space they were using), emptied your Trash and are still showing the discrepancy.

Showing Different amounts of Free space in DiskU than Macintosh HD

On DiskU its showing that i have Used 86.76 GB, then the Macntosh HD is showning that i have only used 36.57 GB.Im only after re-installing Lion on my Macbook Pro. HOw can i fix this?

Cheers, this helped alot. It turned out it was the snapshots that time machine takes and saves on the internal Macintosh HD. which then the snapshots show as free space.

Time machine on server doesn't show correct amount of free space

Hi
I have a mac mini server running 10.9.3, with a drobo raid connected via usb (I wouldn't have chosen the drobo, but not my decision..). The server has Time Machine service enabled, pointing to a folder on the drobo.
When users connect to it (various mavericks clients) they can choose to use it for Time Machine, but when the clients starts to back up, they all quits quite fast, because it states that there is only from around 3-400 MB to around 80-90 GB free space.
There is, however, around 1.5 TB free space on the disk, and this registers also fine in the server app on the server.
I have tried to use another drive as the backup target, which leads to the same issue.
I have also tried to remove the backup and initiate a new on the client, but still the same. It is not consistent how far the client backup gets - the one that have gone furthest is around 45 GB.
Any idea on what it might be?
A few more details:
- the drobo is hfs+ journaled
- I have checked the size restriction in the time machine settings on the server and have tried with both a 500 GB restriction and no restriction
- the clients are all set up to do unencrypted backup
- the clients have both been cabled connections and wifi connections
- the clients have no problem backing up to a local connected drive

I haven't got access to the server right now (so I can't provide the complete details), but something like 6-700 GB (which is more than it shows in the client time machine windows, but less than what is true (which was around 1,5 TB))

Is there any way in Finder I can get the window to show the amount of free space on a selected drive?

I am not a fan of all the changes they have made to finder in Lion.

Go to desktop, click on hard drive, command+I or File ... Get Info.
Then you will see the info for that drive and listing the available space.

Right click on your desktop and choose "viewer options". Adjust the spacing and the size of your icons and you should be able to see the size of your drive(s) and the free space available on each drive with the exception of your bootcamp drive which will only show the overall size of the drive you have it on. This may be different if you only have one system drive (like on a Mac Book Pro) with a partition containing bootcamp on it. this may only show you the overall capacity, I can't say for sure though as I only use a Mac Pro with 4 seperate Hard Drives which are showing both overall capacity and free space available. Hope this helps

I am not exactly sure why the menu did not detect the password change or if it was stored incorrectly after you changed it? To know the amount of free space in a tablespace

I'm learning oracle 9i release 9.2.0.1.0 .I'd created a tablespace 'TOOLS' for being used as the default tablespace for Statspack.
I wish to know the amount of free space available in this tablespace. For this purpose I ran the following query but there was no rows selected :-

Erratic amount of free space on my hard drive...

Can someone please tell me if they think this is strange, or should I not worry about it.
About a week ago I had 520 gigs of free space on my hard drive (its a 1 TB drive). I decided to defrag it simply because it had been a long time since I had done so. That went off without a hitch. I did not even think to check if the amount of free space had changed afterwards. I then decided to use Disk Utility to 'Erase Free Space'. That ran fine, but afterwards I was shocked to see that I now had 605 gigs (!!!) of free space, meaning either the defrag or the erasing of 'Free Space' freed up some 85 gigs (). Okay, strange I thought, but no complaints here. A couple days went by and I happened to glance at the free space and WOAH, its dropped back down to 570, even though I've added, AT MOST, 5 gigs of photos, music etc. Is it me or does this seem really strange...? Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this, reasoning etc...

It is also curious that when you create and save a data file it will report a different size once you open and save it again even without changing contents.

Do I need to leave a minimum amount of free space?

Hello,
I have the 8g iPhone, recently added data to it, which leaves approximately 375 megs of free space. Should this relatively small amount of free space cause any issues? I read a few posts about it but the answers listed in those was relatively inconclusive. I'm thinking about the 10% rule (or myth) about free space on HD's below that amount start to suffer performance issues, etc.

Right, I've only heard suggestions or assumptions so far. I guess it would seem strange to me that Apple would allow you to fill potential space that would impact the device performance, why not just set it aside. If this were true, wouldn't it mean you could only use just over 6gigs on an 8gig iPod without some sort of consequence (i.e. Start with 8G, down to 7.2g for the OS, down another 10% to avoid performance problems, would leave you at just over 6gigs right?)
I guess I thought if this were true, Apple would say something or do something to prevent it or warn users of potential consequences.

Amount of free space incorrect mavericks

amt of free space not correct on new mbp 15 retina currently on desktop shows 988.08 gb which is correct but free space shows 1.1tb which is impossible
disk utility shows correct amount 988.08 available 154.79 anyone else with this problem happened previously repaired disk with tech tools and went away now back

Finder shows incorrect modification date

Another horrible finder bug. It showed a wrong modification date for a pdf file that I had just changed. The date shown was 22 januari, but the correct date, which was displayed only after relauching finder, was 18 februari. The shell command "ls -al" DID show the correct date. Moving up and down the directory hierarchy did not solve the problem, only a relaunch did.
At the same time I noticed that some other files in the same directory had ridiculous modification and creation dates. Those dates were something like 2001, 1pm, while the entire directory, including all the files in it, was created on 22 januari 2015.
This is similar to a bug I reported here last week, where Finder did not show a certain file at all. I am using a different computer now, so that many hardware related issues are ruled out.
I will file a bug report. I am spending a considerable part of my time filing Yosemite bugs.

I ran the Terminal command suggested by others. And a MIRACLE happened!
Now Disk Utility says I have 155gb available. But Finder reports an incredible 709gb of free space... on my 256gb drive!
It must be a blessing from Steve Jobs.

ITunes showing incorrect amount of music on iPhone 6

Just upgraded to iPhone 6. Brought new phone home and restored from iTunes backup. Of course, music/playlist in not included in restore yet, in iTunes, my new iPhone shows same amount of songs of original iPhone 4s (733 songs, 3.1 GBs.) However, new iPhone actually only has 11 songs! When checking capacity on actual iPhone 6, (Settings>General>About>Available) the device shows having 8.1 GB of available space and 11 songs. What gives? Note: I manually manage music and videos on my devices with iTunes. Always have, always will. Any help would be gratefully appreciated! Thanks!

In case anyone else finds this post with a similar problem.. I found a solution. (posted by a user named txforever)
Manually change the date back several months (or years if need be) and then go in to your Recently Deleted Photos folder. Don't be fooled by it telling you there are 0 photos. If you actually open it up, suddenly you will find all the old photos that should've been deleted but never were.
I emptied it and my problem is solved.
Hooray!
I feel like Apple should issue this as a known solution to this bug that a lot of people seem to be having. And also, they should fix the bug of course.

i just realised that my finder shows in the staus bar that i have 272gb available. the thing is my mac is only 199gb big?
and if i go the apple symbol and than about this mac etc... it show me that i only have 117gb free space and that apparently i have 154 gb on back ups on my mac
