Finder Showing Incorrect usage and availability of external disk

I have a 80gig external drive; one for cloneing (with superduper) and one misc files.
I just erased some of the misc files but the Finder View does not show the correct size.
I checked each folder in the misc file partition and it is way off. Its partitioned for 40 gig and says there is only 7 available with 33 being used. I checked each file individually in the partition and they total less than 10 so I know its way off.
Here are some things I tried.
1. I tried disk utility to see if that correctly showed the files - it didn't.
2. I tried file info and it didn't work.
3. I verified both disk partitions and they were fine
4. I turned shut down the computer and mounted/unmounted the hard drive -- didn't work either.
thanks for any help you can give me to "refresh" this finder, info,or disk utility.

William
I then shutdown and started back up WITH my external HD plugged in when I restarted. And, Waleh!!!!, It now shows the correct amount of usage and availabilitySo what was the magic spell?
Sometimes Finder presents stale information, but it is unusual (but not impossible) for the underlying disk utilities to do this. It could be this is what happened in your case!
Whatever, glad it's fixed!

  • Finder showing incorrect amount of free space

After the recent Mountain Lion update, my Finder now shows an incorrect amount of free space.
    I have a 500GB hard drive, and I have about 150GB free.
After the update, finder says I have 478.4 GB free?
That looks like the total capacity, after you account for system software. I've done a PRAM and SCM reset, disk verification and repair, but still no joy.
Any thoughts? Is it a bug in the update?

    Here is the answer....

Re: Hard drive available space shown incorrectly in finder Jan 12, 2012 7:35 PM (in response to ilari Korte)
This is probably like the issue that I was having on my MacBook Pro. If you are using Time Machine on a laptop it stores the diffs in a file on your hard drive. This action can be disabled with the terminal command
    sudo tmutil disablelocal
This turns the local Time Machine off. It is up to you if you want to do this, but Finder shows this space as unused since it can be overwritten when needed. It saved me over a hundred GBs of space.

  • Finder shows incorrect hard disk size in status bar

    hey there,
i just realised that my finder shows in the staus bar that i have 272gb available. the thing is my mac is only 199gb big?
and if i go the apple symbol and than about this mac etc... it show me that i only have 117gb free space and that apparently i have 154 gb on back ups on my mac
    any help please

Had the same thing on my MacBook Air with a 256gb SSD.
Finder was showing 177gb available. Disk Utility said 54gb.
I ran the Terminal command suggested by others. And a MIRACLE happened!
Now Disk Utility says I have 155gb available. But Finder reports an incredible 709gb of free space... on my 256gb drive!
It must be a blessing from Steve Jobs.

  • After Yosemite Upgrade my Macbook shows incorrect free space available on Macintosh HD

Hey all .... after doing the Yosemite upgrade on my Mid 2010 15" MacBook Pro it finished but when I double click on the Macintosh HD it shows 140.62 TB available ... kinda impossible since I only have a 500GB drive inside the laptop ...
Methinks I found a bug ... not a huge deal as I know it's likely 140.62 GB free as opposed to TB ... just find it curious ...

Hey - did you get anywhere with this?
I have the exact same problem and it is definitely related to iTunes Match (I enabled 24 hours ago and the problem started immediately).
In my case the actual phone displays the correct information (about 1.3gb free) but via iTunes (either connecting over wifi or over usb) it displays 19.4 gb free.
In my case the difference is almost exactly the size of my iTunes library.
Here is what I belive is happening (no fix yet).
I have enabled iTunes Match on my phone but I have left the song files on the phone (i.e. I play files actually from the device and not from the cloud) . Now, when I connect to iTunes, iTunes sees merely that iTunes Match is enabled and therefore belives that the phone does not contain any downloaded music (or at least did not contain any at the point iTunes Match was enabled) and therefore displays a library-size chunk as free space.
One fix which I suspect would work would be to delete my entire library from the iPhone, enable itunes Match and redownload the entire library from the phone. That however is not something I want to entertain at present.
This has to be a bug at Apple's end - I hope they fix it soon!

  • Logviewer 1.14 showing incorrect times, and other issues.

Couple of issues with running LogViewer, wondering if anyone can help.
First, and seems to be the most frustrating, is that the LogViewer screen is showing incorrect times for the events. I am in Mountain Time zone in the US, which is GMT-7. When looking at the log from a web browser, my router is displaying the correct time. The text file that LogViewer saves on the local computer shows the same correct time. The LogViewer screen, however, shows a time 7 hours into the future. IE, if I type out the log from a DOS window, the last event will say something like "Mar 28 1:15:05 2008", but that same event number will be listed on the logviewer screen as "Mar 28 8:15:05" Any ideas on what may be wrong and how to correct it?
Second, all events seem to be grouped exactly 3 minutes apart. I realize this is probably an effect of the router sending the information every three minutes. Anyone know of a way of changing that period?
Hm, just noticed a third, but very minor issue. The text file written has the wrong day of week on it. It's listing Mar 28 2008 as a Wednesday...
Thanks in advance for any advice.
OK, the tech info. I am running LogViewer 1.14 on a Windows XP machine, contacting an WRT55AG with firmware 1.20. The connection is through a Cat 5 cable, not through the wireless.

  • Already installed update shows both installed and available

I installed iMovie update 10.0.2 within the last month, and it shows as being installed, yet the same version shows as "1 Update available" and I get reminders daily. I have cancelled installation (option key) but it remains. How do I remove this 1 Update available. I don't have unlimited broadband to download this almost 2Gb again?

Come on you clever guys, there must be a way.

  • Finder shows only aliases and no files!

I recently reinstalled a 2008 mini with 10.5.8 to regain the use of deleted iLife and on its way to using Snow Leopard after a disasterous loss of use of peripherals following 'upgrading' to Lion.  It's main use is as a storage drive so I don't spend much time gazing at it, hence my surprise to see that, in Finder, the startup volume - it has three partitions - only shows drive alaises and no files or folders at all.
This occurs when the said main partition 'Hard Disk' icon is selected in the sidebar and only aliases for the other partitions and attached drives show on the right pane.  When the 'Computer' icon is selected, all drives appear on the right and when the main partition is selected, its full complement of files etc. is shown.  It is as though the contents of the /Volumes folder is all that the main drive's icon can display.
I have run Disk Utility and Repaired Disk Permissions the said partition/volume and Verify Disk-ed the whole hard disk.
Although my intention is to upgrade this install to Snow Leopard, I don't want to do that only to find myself with a crippled drive display.
Any suggestions about getting the drive to display correctly?

First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
Setup your Finder Preferences for the Sidebar again.

  • Finder shows incorrect modification date

Another horrible finder bug. It showed a wrong modification date for a pdf file that I had just changed. The date shown was 22 januari, but the correct date, which was displayed only after relauching finder, was 18 februari. The shell command "ls -al" DID show the correct date. Moving up and down the directory hierarchy did not solve the problem, only a relaunch did.
At the same time I noticed that some other files in the same directory had ridiculous modification and creation dates.  Those dates were something like 2001, 1pm, while the entire directory, including all the files in it, was created on 22 januari 2015.
This is similar to a bug I reported here last week, where Finder did not show a certain file at all. I am using a different computer now, so that many hardware related issues are ruled out.
I will file a bug report. I am spending a considerable part of my time filing Yosemite bugs.

Had the same thing on my MacBook Air with a 256gb SSD.
Finder was showing 177gb available. Disk Utility said 54gb.
I ran the Terminal command suggested by others. And a MIRACLE happened!

  • Battery shows incorrect time and no notification on low battery

    Hi everyone,
I have just purchased a new battery, of course its not an original one. The problem is that my battery meter shows the percentage incorrectly. Like it says 42% remaining, but suddenly my laptop got in to hibernation (as i set the action to perform upon low battery level reaches). Now what can be the issue? As the battery new and its working fine, i mean its giving me backup of 2+ hours. Oh, and my laptop is DV6-2157wm with Windows 7 Home Editions (64-bit).
Waiting for your kind suggestions and tips.
    Take care,
    Regards
    Fahad Ali

    Please have a look here.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Battery-meter-frequently-asked-questions
Why does the time remaining on the battery meter change drastically sometimes?
Battery life depends primarily on two things: what you do on the mobile PC while it's running on battery power, and the power plan settings that control the computer's use of power. The mobile PC's power consumption varies constantly, depending on your particular activity and how long you spend on that activity. For instance, watching a DVD consumes considerably more battery power than reading and writing e-mail. For these reasons, the battery meter often lags in reporting the charge and the estimated time remaining.
hence battery meter is never so accurate. older the battery, chances are more of sudden drop.

  • Finder shows only dates and not Event Names???

    Hi all,
When browsing through Finder to copy some photos for other applications, some of my event names show up as names and some show up as the dates the photos were taken... but all the events have been named and show as such in iPhoto '09 Why is that?
    Thanks,
    Joe

The power of iPhoto is its relational database - but that does mean you have to use it - it is not a file based system and takes a different way of thinking -- and note that even if you cheat and go directly into the database successfully the structure probably will change in the future that has occurred in the last several versions - so it pays to use the correct methods - which IMHO Terence has documented much better than Apple has

  • ITunes 11 showing incorrect content and playlists for my iPhone 4S

I have iTunes 11.0.1.12 for Windows. I have an iPhone 4S 64GB running iOS 6.1. I have been in the process of upgrading songs with iTunes Match but have not yet linked my iPhone 4S to iTunes Match. I have different playlists on the iTunes library to those on the iPhone. I have 14165 tunes in the library, but only 6729 on the iPhone. When I connect iPhone to iTunes on the computer, iTunes displays that I have 7393 tunes on the iPhone, and an incorrect list of playlists. I have a feeling this data is from some previous sync point. How do I get it to display the correct content?

Same problem after getting OS7 and iTunes 11.1

  • How to show Report Usage and History

I need to list information about which reports my company has run in the past 3 months.
We will be running some upgrades soon,
and now is a good time to clean-out any reports that we don't use anymore.
I've already used the System Administrator -> Concurrent : Program forms to map report files to concurrent programs.
But I don't know which reports we actually use.
Thanks in advance for your support.

    Hi,
I just found that our DBA has set purging to 31 days.
So I guess I'll have to find another solution to my requirement. If purging is scheduled to purge the requests which were submitted before 31 days then I believe there is no way to find out what programs have been submitted before that day. You may ask your DBA to take a backup of the relevant tables before purging it.

  • Web Monitor shows incorrect usage

I ftped my web pages to my 30M of mysite.verizon.net web space and it works fine.  FireFTP tells me I'm using about 20M which matches my computer's copy of the data.  Verizon's Online Web Monitor shows 32M?  Why?  Is Verizon storing all my modifications which amount to probably around 30M?
I just wanted to make sure Verizon will not removing any of my files.  BTW I can manage the 30M space on my own and think it's pretty sleazy to have the add more data space link.  I guess it's more $$$ for Verizon.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Just a follow for anyone that cares.  Verizon keeps all your changes archived!  This is a real waste of space and well benfits Verizon since people will order more space.  Pretty sleezy if you ask me but I'll keep my updates on my laptop and USB backup for free.
