Finder showing terrible available size

First the computer ran out of disk space on a 500 GB MacBook Pro.  Searching the harddrive, I discovered 250 gigabytes worth of Apple log files.  I deleted them.  The available disk space did not change.
I then rebooted the computer off a Lion Boot disk (yes you can make one) and ran Disk Utility, it found errors on the drive with the deleted file record and cleaned them.
Now when I start up, Lion reports "830 GB available" in the status bar!  330 more than the capicity of the harddrive!  Any tips to fixing this?  I've tried running disk/permissions repair in Disk Utility, but no change.  Also tried copying/deleting/moving files in the hopes that would correct the issue.  No change.

Turn off Time Machine in its preference pane. Wait a few seconds, then turn it back on. You may need to relaunch the Finder or log out to see the effect.

  • Finder showing more available space than my drive has

My finder window is showing that my 500GB drive on my new MB Air has 662 GB of free space available.  I like that math, but obviously there is a problem.  In reality, I should only show about 150 GB available.
Disk Utility shows the correct used/free space, so why is finder so off?
Interestingly enough, this is a replacement MBA because I had issues with my original one including Finder showing LESS available, than I actually had. I Never had these problems in Snow Leopard on my MBP.  Any suggestions?

  • Finder shows random folder size

Finder is telling me that this folder is just 11.3MB while inside there is almost 10 times so.
    See picture for details.
Get info provides me the same estimate.
    How's that possible?
Is there a way to fix it?
Is finder just unreliable to check the size of files?
    Bummer...

I forgot to mention that this happened in the internal drive of my MBPr.

  • Ipod shows different available size...

then itunes does when my ipod is connected. I have the 60gb video, which after formatting is 55.6gb available for music/movies/photos and whatnot. Now the other day, I was getting some music from my friend and was using his cord. I moved the ipod while it was connected and all of a sudden it disconnected. I checked to see if all my music was still there, but it wasn't. It erased everything. I finished loading up the music from his computer and went and hooked it up to my computer. The ipod and itunes said that the available space was the same, and there was no problem getting my computer to recognize the ipod. Then last night, i hooked it up and it would flicker between connected to the computer and not. it would barely recognize it unless i held it a certain way. the cable shouldn't be bad because i just bought the ipod last week. thats also when i noticed that itunes showed 1800 songs and only 46 gb of available space. i ejected the ipod to check and see what the ipod said it had available. it showed 1800 songs and 52.6 gb of available space. what should i do? restore it and reload all my songs on it? the ipod version is 1.1.1 and i'm not sure what version of itunes i have. Any help is appreciated.

I have the 60gb video, which after formatting is 55.6gb
    This is correct.
I was getting some music from my friend
    Please don't STEAL music.
what should i do? restore it and reload all my songs on it?
    Yes.
Restore will fix most problems related to disk space used.

  • Finder shows in mini window

Whenever I hit Cmd+N or simply select the command form the menubar, in both cases with the Finder seleced I get this mini windows without neither the sidebar nor the tools in the top of the window. The pathbar is as normal at bottom but the x of y selected and remaining is at the top. However when I doubletap a harddrive on the desktop the Finder shows in full size.
I remember in Snow Leopard we had this button at the top right of the window in the finder whether we wanted to have a small or large window. How can I change it back in Lion? Probably just one easy button or setting I've overlooked..
    Thanks

Yeah, I figured it out. It was as I thought just a silly thing I had overlooked.
To the rest ot you, you might as well hit Alt+Cmd+S for the sidebar and Cmd+Shift+7 (Cmd+/).
    Thanks Colin

  • Finder Showing Incorrect usage and availability of external disk

I have a 80gig external drive; one for cloneing (with superduper) and one misc files.
I just erased some of the misc files but the Finder View does not show the correct size.
I checked each folder in the misc file partition and it is way off. Its partitioned for 40 gig and says there is only 7 available with 33 being used. I checked each file individually in the partition and they total less than 10 so I know its way off.
Here are some things I tried.
    1. I tried disk utility to see if that correctly showed the files - it didn't.
    2. I tried file info and it didn't work.
    3. I verified both disk partitions and they were fine
    4. I turned shut down the computer and mounted/unmounted the hard drive -- didn't work either.
thanks for any help you can give me to "refresh" this finder, info,or disk utility.
    skip

    William
I then shutdown and started back up WITH my external HD plugged in when I restarted. And, Waleh!!!!, It now shows the correct amount of usage and availabilitySo what was the magic spell?
Sometimes Finder presents stale information, but it is unusual (but not impossible) for the underlying disk utilities to do this. It could be this is what happened in your case!
    Whatever, glad it's fixed!

  • Finder shows incorrect hard disk size in status bar

    hey there,
i just realised that my finder shows in the staus bar that i have 272gb available. the thing is my mac is only 199gb big?
and if i go the apple symbol and than about this mac etc... it show me that i only have 117gb free space and that apparently i have 154 gb on back ups on my mac
    any help please

Had the same thing on my MacBook Air with a 256gb SSD.
Finder was showing 177gb available. Disk Utility said 54gb.
I ran the Terminal command suggested by others. And a MIRACLE happened!
Now Disk Utility says I have 155gb available. But Finder reports an incredible 709gb of free space... on my 256gb drive!
It must be a blessing from Steve Jobs.

  • App World shows update available, but I can not find it

    Hi,
since I've updated App World to version 3.1.1.21 - I do get on my Home Screen the information, that in App World would by an update available. When I switch to the App World icon, also this is showing me that an update would be available. I open App World and click My World and there is no of my Apps flagged for an update. After that, I leave the App World and the update flage (red asterix) is cleared from the App World Icon, but is still on my Home Screen on the App World Icon.
When I take out the battery, the Update flag appears again also on the App World Icon.
Any idea How to find out, why this red asterix on the Home Screen can not be cleared? I've already checked Options->Applications and could not find any updates available for Third Party, Core or Add-On.
Thanks for your ideas and regards.

Try to open App World and while in My World open the menu and choose "Refresh List". I'm not sure if this helps, but its worth trying!!

  • Finder shows more space available than Disk utility

I am clearing out space on my main hard drive. The Finder shows that I have 265 Gbytes available (out of 750), but disk first aid shows that I have only 90 Gbytes.
    Disk Utility shows no problem.

    Morning Bodance,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
There could be several reasons why this could occur.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:

  • How can I find out the screen size of the users moniter using the Acrobat SDK?

How can I find out the screen size of the users moniter using the Acrobat SDK? I need to know how much sreen real estate that is available on the users moniter. Is there some call that I can make from the SDK to discover the maximun X and Y coordinates?
    Thanks,

Currently, I am testing on multiple moniters and it is defaulting to the moniter designated as the #1 moniter. For our purposes, this is acceptable. Once the two documents have loaded, the user can move and re-size at will.

  • The latest .key I created is huge,  .... Finder shows it as 5GB.  Other .key of similar slide total are about 300-500MB.  There is nothing different about this one.  It is just .jpg files (photos) and text.  No movies, no audio.  Why so big??

    iMac.  2.4GHz.  Core 2 Duo.  2GB SDRAM.  OS - 10.9.5.   Keynote - 6.2.2 v.1878.
I just completed a keynote slide show.  The Finder indicates it is 5.25GB.  It is 200 slides, no movies, no audio of any kind, no special transitions.  It is just photos and some added text explanations.  The individual photos are each 5-6MB, with about 190 photos total.  I have other previous .key's about the size in terms of the number of photos and they are showing in the Finder as taking up 300-500MB.  There is nothing different with this one particular presentation.  I usually organize and store my photos using .key after a trip.  Photos are downloaded into iPhoto (7.1.5) and then I build a keynote presentation by copying the photos as .jpg's out of iPhoto and into Keynote, with text as notes on or under each photo.  Something changed with the latest keynote in terms of file size.  But I can't determined why it required 5.25GB of disc space while other .key's of the approximate same size and content are only taking 10% of that amount.  Anyone have an idea what is going on with keynote is this particular instance???  I know I could compress it, but I want to understand why the last time I used keynote the file size was so huge.    Thanks for the help.

Some additional information.  In looking at the package contents info, under the DATA Folder there are several entries for each slide/photo in the .key presentation.  There is a long list of contents that shows each image as:
        pasted-image-1234.png
and a second list right below that identifies each image again in the .key as:
        pasted-image-small-1234.png
Both of these lists show image files of 15-25MB for each photo, even though the original .jpg photo was 4-6MB.  They list/show all of the images in the .key, but DO NOT show the added text.  So it appears the package contents indicates two separate .png files for each photo in the .key, but the file size for each is 3-5 times greater than the original .jpg that was copy/pasted from iPhoto.  And for some reason there are two copies of each.
There is also a list for the two following image/data files:
        pasted-image-small-small-1234.png
        st12-1234.png
Both of these lists show a file size of 100-200KB for each image, and again show all of the images in the.key.
Only the st-xx-xxxx.png list of images also show the added text.
Again it appears when I created the Keynote presentation by copy/paste images from iPhoto, Keynote stored multiple copies of each image as .png file several times larger than the original .jpg.   The completed Keynote slide show is so large is almost impossible to work with.  The system is so slow that routine commands are not completed, e.g., trying to "save as" into a .pdf never finishes and I have to "force quit".
Still trying to determine why this occurred with the 6.2.2 version.  Any chance I can delete all but the st-xx-xxxx image list and get back to a normal file size??

  • Finder showing incorrect amount of free space

After the recent Mountain Lion update, my Finder now shows an incorrect amount of free space.
    I have a 500GB hard drive, and I have about 150GB free.
After the update, finder says I have 478.4 GB free?
That looks like the total capacity, after you account for system software. I've done a PRAM and SCM reset, disk verification and repair, but still no joy.
Any thoughts? Is it a bug in the update?

Re: Hard drive available space shown incorrectly in finder Jan 12, 2012 7:35 PM (in response to ilari Korte)
This is probably like the issue that I was having on my MacBook Pro. If you are using Time Machine on a laptop it stores the diffs in a file on your hard drive. This action can be disabled with the terminal command
    sudo tmutil disablelocal
This turns the local Time Machine off. It is up to you if you want to do this, but Finder shows this space as unused since it can be overwritten when needed. It saved me over a hundred GBs of space.

  • Folder problems on external drive, not showing correct file size

I've run across a strange problem. I'm media managing for a tv show, meaning I'm offloading video from CF cards onto 2 external drives, one is a Drobo Raid (set up for backup) and another is a Lacie rugged drive. After copying the media to both drives, the folder I copy will match, but sometimes as I drill upward in my folder structure, suddenly the file sizes will not match. To be more clear: 2 folders will show differing file sizes, but inside that folder is only another folder, nothing else, which matches across the drives. I've shown all files in finder and there's no hidden files, though sometimes I see the ds_store files are different sizes (8k vs 16k), but that's not always the case. Sometimes if I simply create a new folder and move it's contents into it I can get the folders to match, but sometimes that doesn't work. It's part of my workflow to show that these copies match exactly via screenshots, and although the most important folder (the direct folder holding the footage) always matches, these folder problems are super frustrating as it's not constant, and any workarounds also work inconsistantly.
I had an accidental disconnect of the Drobo one time, and although none of the data seems to have any problem, I fear it's done something to the directory. The rugged drive is swapped out every few days and the problem seems to be on the Drobo. Because the nature of the data is pretty important, I'm afraid to just try messing around with repairing or other software solutions unless I know it's super safe and won't harm the data.
I'm at a loss as to what's causing it and at the very least how to avoid it cropping up. Any help or insight would be appreciated!

I had the same problem with my iMac, first I repaired the disk, then I ejected the disk, restarted, and then reinserted the USB in a different port.  All of my files magically showed up.  I don't know what caused the error but it has been working fine since.
