Finder shows in mini window

Whenever I hit Cmd+N or simply select the command form the menubar, in both cases with the Finder seleced I get this mini windows without neither the sidebar nor the tools in the top of the window. The pathbar is as normal at bottom but the x of y selected and remaining is at the top. However when I doubletap a harddrive on the desktop the Finder shows in full size.
I remember in Snow Leopard we had this button at the top right of the window in the finder whether we wanted to have a small or large window. How can I change it back in Lion? Probably just one easy button or setting I've overlooked..
Thanks

Yeah, I figured it out. It was as I thought just a silly thing I had overlooked.
To the rest ot you, you might as well hit Alt+Cmd+S for the sidebar and Cmd+Shift+7 (Cmd+/).
Thanks Colin

iDevices are not and have never been backup devices.
Authorizing a computer does not cause media to magically appear.
Media is only where the user puts it.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.

  • "Mini" windows (with small close/min/zoom buttons)

I'm overall extremely pleased with Leopard. One of the things that drives me CRAZY, however, is the inconsistent nature of windows made with Get Info (⌘I). Sometimes, it seems, this creates a normal window, so that when I type the keyboard command to close the Info (⌘W), it closes.
But sometimes the Get Info window is one of these new "mini" windows that appear like windows, but won't receive the ⌘W command from the keyboard. Instead, the Finder window closes! Aaarrgh! This drives me crazy.
The same thing has happened with Help across the OS. I realize I'm probably alone in that I miss the old Help Viewer app. But the fact that it's gone isn't what bothers me. What does bother me is that ALL help windows are now this new "mini" window that won't close when told to with the keyboard, and worse still they float on top of everything no matter what.
Does anybody know if there is a way to turn these things off?

    What do you mean?
From the Apple Human Interface Guidelines:
    <hr>
An inspector is a panel that allows users to view the attributes of a selection. Inspectors (also called inspector windows) can also provide ways to modify these attributes. Pages, Keynote, and the Finder all make use of inspectors.\[...\]
Inspectors should update dynamically based on the current selection. Contrast this behavior with that of an Info window, which shows the attributes of the item that was selected when the window was opened, even after the focus has been changed to another item. Also, an Info window is not a panel; it is listed in the application’s Window menu and it does not hide when the application becomes inactive.
You can provide both inspectors and Info windows in your application, because in some cases it’s more useful to have one window in which context changes when each new item is selected (an inspector) and in other cases it’s more useful to be able to see the attributes of more than one item at the same time (a set of Info windows). Multiple inspector windows and Info windows can be open at the same time.
So Inspector windows are the norm, and Info windows are a bit unusual, but make perfect sense in the Finder.
I was a bit intrigued by the last sentence. Since when has the Finder, Interface Builder, Preview, etc. been able to open more than one Inspector?
By the way, the Inspector in the Finder can be closed with another hit of ⌘⌥I.

How do I move Elements 8 projects (slide shows) from a Windows XP computer to new Windows 7 computer that also has Elements 8 on it so that the slides shows will work (Elements 8 works well on the Windows 7 computer & I have done several new slide show projects on it)?    I tried backup & restore without success.  I have also found the .psess files and copied them to the catalog in the new computer but when the sides shows are opened none of the images or music is there.  Only the text that I entered shows.  I have even tried to replicate the file paths from the XP computer to the new computer to see if that will help.

UPDATE:  By a stroke of luck I happened to find a catalog link (a PSE8D file) in the 'My Catalog' file where the imported data was stored.  When I clicked on it to investigate what is was 'magically' all of my transferred projects appeared in Organizer.  Upon further investigation I found that the projects transferred from my XP computer were stored in a hidden catalog that had to be accessed through the Custom Location option in Catalog Manager (accessed by clicking File then Catalog then Custom Location).  No Windows or Elements search revealed this fact.  I am appreciative that I just got lucky.  The Adode/Photoshop company was absolutely of no help.  If fact to me their structure is designed to avoid contact with their customers unless you're buying a new product.  Their products have many good features (even though user unfriendly) and it's a shame they don't value their customers more once the sale is completed.
Bottom line:  All of the projects (sideshows) have been recovered and work in my new Windows 7 computer.  I hope my experience helps others.

  • IPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes

I have recieved a new IPod video 30Gb off my g/f (how nice of her :D) anyway when I plug it into my computer it will not appear in iTunes, a problem plenty of people are having it seems. The difference being I think I know what caused the problem but I'm having trouble with it still.
When I recieved the Ipod I tried it on my girlfriends computer and it worked fine. She already had an ipod and itunes installed. I was able to add music no problem and it appeared in itunes. She however was having problems downloading on her computer for websites or using download sofware since installing itunes and the problem went away when itunes was uninstalled.
Because of this (there were work arounds so I'm not after a fix for that) I thought I try using other software to see if that stopped me having this problem. This meant when I got my ipod home I plugged the ipod into my computer and did not install anything off the disc. This I believe is what has caused my problem for not being able to see my ipod in itunes.
Anyway I tried to get other software to work (winamp at the time) but couldn't figure it out and so thought I'd just bite the bullet and install itunes and hope I didn't have the same problems as my g/f.
After installing and plugging my ipod in again nothing happened. I checked My Computer and the ipod was there and called PHIL'S IPOD but nothing was in itunes. I then followed all the instructions on here :
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
but it still won't pick up my ipod.
Is there anything else I can try to get my ipod to appear in itunes I really do want to use it but at the minute I can't at all.
    Thanks in advance.

Two years ago I had to return an ipod mini to the shop for a refund as I could not get it to work. It showed up in windows but not in itunes. I spent about a week trying EVERYTHING, blamed apple for some stupid glitch and gave up. Ten days ago my daughter got an ipod nano, and since we share the same pc I did warn her of what might happen. Yup, it did. Exactly the same problem. Once again I tried all the tricks, the five Rs, renaming the drive, you name it, I did it. Throughout this period though my PC was running a little slow and weird things were happening and despite using Norton Antivirus and other anti spyware I suspected I had not fully recovered from some sort of infection which drove me mad by blasting me with popups for 888 casinos etc. What I thought was really odd was that nothing showed up in Device Manager and having googled around a bit I came across this from which you can download a AproposFix.
So if this sounds like your problem go here:
    http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14679793
and try it. The ipod now works, my daughter turned pink with delight, and my PC is now back to normal speed and all sorts of other seemingly unconnected annoyances have been resolved. I really do wish Apple could be more aware of problems like this as there seem to be many thousands of 'users' (ha ha) out there who look as if they are having similar problems.

  • Looking for a site that shows problems with windows patches or updates.

Looking for a site that shows problems with windows patches or updates...so I know what not to install.
Plenty of sites list and summarize individual patches, I want one that consolidates problems and complaints so I can better assess the risk. Currently I'm waiting to install patches several days and doing google searches. That works, but I'd rather find a place
    that does it with expertise.
Which forums would be best to look for such problems.
Thanks in and advance for suggestions

    Hi,
I agreed with Cyber and Rick.
Windows update helps to keep your PC safer—and your software current—by fetching the latest security and feature updates from Microsoft via the Internet.
Although there might be some problems when installing it, Windows update is not the one to blame.

  • Firefox 4b2 and Windows 7, multiple tabs shows up as windows in OS-taskbar

I have been using Firefox on my Windows 7 based computer (Ultimate x64) and I didn't experience this when using v3.6 and earlier versions. But ever since I updated to v4 (beta 1 and now beta 2), I have noticed that when I have multiple tabs open in Firefox, it shows up as Windows in Windows 7-taskbar... If I hover the pointer over to, and place it above the Firefox Icon (or click it), a LOOOOOooonng list shows up with each tab.. But that wasn't the case when using v3.6 for example, instead, each window showed up, but the tabs didn't show until I opened the actual Firefox-window, and this is exactly how I would like it to be.. I have been searching with lights and without finding any answer/s, search the settings-tab and other locations where this feature might show up, but I can't seem to find it, Im completely out of ideas and I need your help.
Best regards // Martin Johansson, Sweden
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== When I updated from v3.6 to v4 Beta 1, and now also with beta 2

You need to change a hidden setting.
Type '''about:config''' into the location bar and press enter.
Accept the warning dialog that appears.
This brings up a list of preferences, in the filter box type '''taskbar'''
Double-click on the preference called '''browser.taskbar.previews.enable''' to change its value to '''false'''

  • My ipod classic doesn't show up on windows or itunes, i have restored it quite a few times, it doesn't seen to make any difference

my ipod classic (new to me- ebay) does not show up on windows or in itunes, i've gone thru troubleshooting, can't really tell if i've successfully restored it or not, and can't seen to add it to my device mgr. I have tried rebooting computer, any ideas would be great

    Hello bithedz,
Have you had a chance to look at this Apple support document related to your issue? If not, it would be a good place to start.
[iPod not recognized in iTunes and Mac desktop|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1410]
And if no luck there, try manually forcing your iPod into *Disk Mode* using the instructions provided in this Apple support document with your iPod connected to your Mac. This should help your iPod mount as an external drive at least on your system so that you can view it from a Finder window and perform a reformat on it if desired.
    [Putting iPod into Disk Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363]
And if you are able to finally get your iPod recognized by iTunes, I would definitely recommend performing a restore of it there.

I am running 4.0.1 and when I download something the Download box stays blank-even though I have selected in General Preferences 'Show the downloads window when downloading a file' AND selected 'Save files to Downloads'....???

In Firefox Options / Privacy be sure "Remember download history" is checked. To see all of the options on that panel, "Firefox will" must be set to "Use custom settings for history".
To find your OS information, on your Windows desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, choose Properties, under System on that small window is info about your OS.

  • Finder shows some but not all files in a folder

In some circumstances, Finder only shows some (but not all) of the files in a folder. Why?
I notice this with Excel autosave files in the Office 2011 Autorecovery folder (Macintosh HD ▸ Users ▸ Conor ▸ Library ▸ Application Support ▸ Microsoft ▸ Office ▸ Office 2011 AutoRecovery). In my case, Finder shows 34 files but "ls" in a Terminal window reports 40 files. The missing files do not start with a period (.) and have the same permissions as other files that show in Finder (-rw-r--r--@ 1 <myname>  staff). Here's the last four lines of "ls -al" - the first two appear in Finder, but not the last two:
    -rw-r--r--@  1 myname  staff    55296  8 Oct  2013 Word Work File D_1239425731.tmp
    -rw-r--r--@  1 myname  staff    55296  8 Oct  2013 Word Work File D_1240072173.tmp
    -rw-r--r--@  1 myname  staff    52796 13 Feb 11:08 safe1.xlk
    -rw-r--r--@  1 myname  staff    95320 12 Mar 16:06 safe2.xlk
I have tried copying files from this folder to another folder, and/or changing their names. They still do not appear in Finder, nor are they visible in the File Open dialog of applications, even when the dialog is listing other files in that directory - but if I manually type the name into the File Open dialog, the app manages to find and open the file.
If I Spotlight-search for the file name, or search in Finder, without specifying that specific directory ("This Mac"), the file is not found, but if I direct the Finder search at that particular directory, then the search returns the relevant files.
So: why does Finder hide certain files when showing a folder, even though it can find and show those files if you specifically ask for them?
Now using OSX 10.10 (Yosemite), but I'm pretty sure I noticed this on OSX 10.8 as well.

So simple - thanks. I'd not been aware of the hidden flag, and now I've found the -O option on ls to display it.
Follow-on question: I now see that you can change the system-wide defaults to display hidden files with this...
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean true ; killall Finder
...but is there a way to specify this on a per folder basis? I'm happy enough to hide hidden files in general, but it would be nice if I could set an attribute/flag/whatever on the Office AutoRecovery directory that told Finder "in this folder, always display hidden files". Can I do this?

  • IPod not showing up in Windows explorer / iTunes - not responding to reset

I have updated my new (1 day old!!) iPod nano to the newest firmware (1.1.1.)... and now I can't use the iPod anymore.
It doesn't show up in Windows Explorer. When I try to connect to it via Run, it says: 'E:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable'
When trying to open Windows Explorer, it freezes - not showing any harddrives.
When trying to connect to it via CMD (dos)... It reads: 'The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable'
I have tried all the soft resets, hard resets etcetera. I have uninstalled the USB driver for iPod, uninstalled iTunes, reinstalled them both, used different USB ports. But still no success.
I can't connect to it via iPod Updater, because Windows won't connect to it.
The iPod itself does respond, although I can't find any data on it anymore.
How do I get my iPod to work again: connect to my windows / iTunes player? Please, any help is appreciated!
    iPod nano 4GB   Windows XP

I have tried all the 'Rs' that Apple recommend. As said, I can't hook up the iPod to my computer. I have tried to reset the iPod manually (holding the select and menu button) - but this doesn't work.
If there is another (manual) way to restore the iPod, I would love to hear about it.
As said: as for restoring the iPod - I can't get any contact with my iPod with my computer at all.

  • Finder always opens new windows

Finder always opens new windows for me. It didn't used to do this (its been doing it at least since I was using 10.5.6), and "Preferences > Always open folders in a new window" is not checked. Any ideas?

    JRokeach,
Sorry if this sounds to simple, I'm hoping that it is, but in a finder window do you have the toolbar showing? Because if you don't it will open all the folders in there own windows. To fix there is a little button in the top right that hides the toolbar, also if you goto view hide toolbar it will do the same.
If that isn't the case try removing the com.apple.finder.plist found in Macintosh HD -> Users -> YOUR USER -> Library -> Preferences, and trashing it.
    Hope that helps,
    Weston

  • Imported Videos not showing up in window

Im new to iMovie. When I try to import AVI movie files from my finder a "copying file" window pops up, finishes loading then a "thumbnail generating" window pops up, finishes loading, but no thumbnails show up in the bottom half of iMovie even though an event is created in the bottom left window. In the bottom window a text appears "No matching video. Choose different option from the Show pop-up menu at the lower left corner." I have chosen every option and still no thumbnails show up: Favorites and Unmarked, Favorites only, All Clips, and Rejected Only. All videos have come from the FLIP and I have also tried to import a 3GPP2 Movie file (extension .3g2) from my Rant phone and it doesn't show up either. I have also made sure that iMovie has all the software updates. Anyone know what is going on?

I have exaclty the same problem. But I am importing movi files from a camera (Canon FS100). Files are imprted, but the do not appear in the iMovie import window.

  • Get Info in Finder shows iPhoto at v8.1.2?

I don't think this is a big issue, but does anyone else's iPhoto show up as version 8.1.2 from the Finder's Get Info window after installing iLife '11? I initially upgraded over iLife '09 but deleted the app and reinstalled. Same result.
Choose About iPhoto inside the app does show that it is iPhoto '11 and version 9, and all the other iLife apps show the right version numbers in the Finder and in the app. Just wanted to see if others are seeing a similar thing.
    Thanks.

My iPhoto shows as V 9.0 in the Finder. Have you rebooted since you've installed it?
