Finder shows incorrect hard disk size in status bar

hey there,
i just realised that my finder shows in the staus bar that i have 272gb available. the thing is my mac is only 199gb big?
and if i go the apple symbol and than about this mac etc... it show me that i only have 117gb free space and that apparently i have 154 gb on back ups on my mac
any help please

Had the same thing on my MacBook Air with a 256gb SSD.
Finder was showing 177gb available. Disk Utility said 54gb.
I ran the Terminal command suggested by others. And a MIRACLE happened!
Now Disk Utility says I have 155gb available. But Finder reports an incredible 709gb of free space... on my 256gb drive!
It must be a blessing from Steve Jobs.

  • DV9000 Maximum Hard Disk Size Supported?

I'm searching for a used HP Pavilion DV9000.  I need to know the maximum hard disk size the DV9000 series laptops support.  To be clear, could I put a 750G or 1TB disk in each bay?
HP's web site isn't helpful. It gives only the "official" numbers at time of release which state it supports up to 240G, 120 in each bay. Those kinds of numbers are almost never an accurate statement of the limitation as I have seen similar "official" numbers for other HP laptops (supposedly limited to 120G or 250G or whatever) that have no problem supporting 640G in the real world.
The size of hard disk a computer supports is usually a function of the main board's chipset and I don't know how to determine the exact chipset or find the chipset's hard disk support capability. Again, HP's web site isn't helpful here either. They may list it has an nVidia chipset; but, they don't mention which nVidia chipset.
To be clear, I don't own a DV9000 yet and I need to know how to find this information maybe with the exact model number. The model series may be DV9000; but, there are dozens of more exacting model numbers on the bottoms of the DV9000 series computers (example: DV9025ea).  I don't want to purchase a DV9000 and then find that its limitation really is 120G per bay.

Hard drive size is a limitation of the Bios, not the chipset, this was overcome with the implementation of Large Block Addressing 48bit in modern bios's in 2003
Hp does not state which bios's on older laptops support this or not.
Looking at the production dates of the 9000 series, I would be willing to bet it supports any size hard drive (48bit LBA), since 48bit LBA was introduced in 2003
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logical_block_addressing
That being said, there could be brand compatibility issues, so be sure to buy the hard drives from a source that has a friendly return policy.
Maybe some one can post that has actually installed a large hard drive in a 9000 series.

  • Does Labview RT 8.5 impose a limit on FAT32 partition / hard disk size?

We will be using a PXI RT system (spec below) to collect, analyse and store a
large amount of data (~30 to 40GB per experiment).
We don't want to keep the Windows host PXI attached
and so the RT PXI must be able to store all the data from an
    experiment.
It would be desirable to keep data from all
experiments on the H/D, so a capacity of ~300GB would be useful.
Q: Is there a limit on the hard disk size imposed by the Labview RT 8.5 Operating System and if so what is
    it?
    An older
post (~2005) suggests that the partitioning tool limited FAT32 partitions to 32GB.
Thus the question I'm asking that if I created a large FAT32 partition with
a third party tool could I install and run Labview RT
    8.5?
Q: Is there any other way of connecting a
large capacity H/D to the RT System?  For example using H/D partitions, slave H/D. Other
    ideas?

    > The size limitation has nothing to do with
the LabVIEW RT OS. FAT32 limits you to 32GB. This cannot be changed since it's a
limitation of the file system format.
    Thanks for
    reply.
I have, however, gained the impression from a
number of web sites that there isn't a 32GB partition limit on FAT32 -- see [**]
below -- but the limit is with the
partitioning tool.  It looks like the
partitioning tool that comes with RT has a 32GB limit (Is that correct?). Hence
my question if you were able to create a large FAT32 partition could you install
    and run RT?
    Regards,
    Michael
[**] The following was copied from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_Allocation_Table#FAT32
Windows 2000 and Windows XP can read and write to
FAT32 file systems of any size, but the format program included in Windows 2000
and higher can only create FAT32 file systems of 32 GiB or less. ... This
limitation can be bypassed by using third-party formatting
    utilities.

  • Finder doesn't show external hard disk

I have a multimedia hard disk which until recently when I connected to my Imac it would show on the left side column of Finder. lately, though, it either takes a while to show up or it doesn't. The disk works fine when I connect it to may TV. Is there a command to "search" external devices or to get a report of what is connected?
    Thank you.

    Hi LM,
To add to the advice above, sometimes an external drive won't mount in the Finder or Desktop if the internal drive hasn't enough free space. Open Disk Utility, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the First Aid button. Now look at the bottom right side of the window. You'll see: Capacity and Available. Make sure your available free space is at least 20% of the total capacity. It takes 15% just to boot a Mac.

  • Disk Utility shows incorrect free disk space after erasing hard disk

    Hello.
A few days ago, I tried to re-install my Mac OS and both Snow Leopard and Lion got the same problem. Before the re-installation, I erased the hard disk of my MacBook (late 2009) and the SSD of my MacBook Air (late 2010) - but after erasing the disks, the disk utility continued to show more or less 5 GB of used disk capacity, although the disks should have been cleared entirely I think.
After installing Snow Leopard or Lion, Finder showed as much free space as I usually expected it would, but Disk Utility still stated 5-10 GB less. For example:
MacBook: Finder shows 17 GB free, Disk Utility 6 GB free
MacBook Air: Finder shows 26 GB free, Disk Utility 19 GB free
    There are 2 problems:
    1) I need the original disk capacity. Think everybody agrees with that wish.
    2) More important: The MacBook should still get a Bootcamp partition (unfortunately, that's necessary for my university's software.. :s): With 17 GB free space, it would work - but 6 GB doesn't.
I would be very pleased if somebody could help me. I searched the web many times so far but didn't find any real solution.

The available disk space reported in finder is totally wrong.
Even if it accounts for the local snapshots. In my macbook air it shows 120 Available in finder which is just 1GB less than my SSD capacity.

  • Finder showing incorrect amount of free space

After the recent Mountain Lion update, my Finder now shows an incorrect amount of free space.
    I have a 500GB hard drive, and I have about 150GB free.
After the update, finder says I have 478.4 GB free?
That looks like the total capacity, after you account for system software. I've done a PRAM and SCM reset, disk verification and repair, but still no joy.
Any thoughts? Is it a bug in the update?

Re: Hard drive available space shown incorrectly in finder Jan 12, 2012 7:35 PM (in response to ilari Korte)
This is probably like the issue that I was having on my MacBook Pro. If you are using Time Machine on a laptop it stores the diffs in a file on your hard drive. This action can be disabled with the terminal command
    sudo tmutil disablelocal
This turns the local Time Machine off. It is up to you if you want to do this, but Finder shows this space as unused since it can be overwritten when needed. It saved me over a hundred GBs of space.

  • How the Performance data depends on Number of CPU/ RAM size/ Hard Disk size

    Hi,
I have started Performance testing (web test and Load tests) using VSTS 2012. I was analysing the VSTS results summary page.
I could not find a way by which we can find a co-relation between the Performance Result data Impacted by Server's Configuration such as
    1- # of CPUs /Cores
    2- RAM size
    3- Hard Disk capacity
Could you help me out if we can reach to a point, through which we can say that, For eg - the Server Performance can be improved if we increase any of the dependent hardware configuration and Also, How the Hardware configuration impacts the Performance.
    Thanks.
    Thanks, Anoop Singh

The results show the performance with the hardware and software configuration
when the test is run. The results may show that some parts of the configuration are lightly loaded (and hence have plenty of spare capacity) whereas other parts are heavily loaded (and hence may be limiting the system performance).
To see the effect of changing the hardware or software configuration would need running exactly the same test with that changed configuration. Then the results of the two (or more) different runs can be compared. Microsoft has some details on how
to compare load test results. See

  • HT1338 My mac Mini shows full hard disk when it is not really full. Shows some free space upon start up that gradually disappears without doing anything with the Mac.

My Mac shows a full hard disk even though the disk is not full. There are several GB of unused space if I add the sizes of all the folders in the disk. Under the disk info window the free space shrinks to zero after a short period of time. It shows more space upon restart, but then it shrinks eventually to zero space available. is there a way to solve this?

  • Hard disk size after clearing partition

hello. i need help undoing what i did to my macbook 13". i recently purchase the time capsule and it worked fine for about a month until this week that it took a long time getting ready for back up and then it would stop without backing up. the error message stated "there may have been a problem with the network connection"
I then attempted to partition the hard disk by using disk utility. it did not help time capsule so i attempted to undo the partition. now i only have the main HD but when i go to see the size of the Hard Drive, it says 74.24 GB capacity (out of 160 GB), 51 GB available, 23.24 GB used.
How do i get back the rest of my hard drive? Thank you in advanced.

Open the Disk Utility, find the list of partitions, drag the divider at the bottom of the main partition as far down as it will go, and click Apply.

  • Help!My Mac doesn't find my external hard disk

Today when I tried to open my mac it "stuck" on the first white screen (by the way my external hard disk was already connected). So, not know what to do, I disconnected the hard disk without ejecting it first, since my computer hadn't opened yet and then I switched it off using the switch off button. However, when I switched on my computer again it couldn't find the biggest part of the disk. I have to say that the external disk is split in 2 parts, Lacie and Exchange, in order to use it in both mac and windows respectively. Is there anything I can do to "make it come back"? Please, tell me that it's not lost...I've restarted it but yet nothing...

If you've followed Randy's suggestions above, and you say nothing shows up on the camera's LCD when you're connected (like DV IN), then I might suspect a bad firewire cable.
Remember, the Easy Setup should be chosen first; then you should be capturing into the project with that Easy Setup. If you've chosen the DV NTSC setup, what happens when you open the log and capture window? Does it say "VTR OK" under the view window, or does it say "NO COMMUNICATION?"
If the latter, again, you may have a bad cable. If you're getting the VTR OK, then try controlling the camera with the transport controls in the log and capture window. It should work.

  • How to find a unused hard disk in Sun Solaris unix

    Hi All,
Can any one tell, how to find all the unused hard disk in Sun Solaris using Unix command.
    Thanks & Regds
    PAN

not understand your question, find command is used to look for files, not disks.
easier way is to logon to your system open up 2 windows, on 1 window # cat /etc/vfstab
    on second window type format.
format will list all the disks in your system.
vfstab file will list all the potential disks and slices used as swap devices and filesystems like your os and application filesystems etc ...
then you compares left and right.
but even then be very very very careful if you find disks in "format" not found in /etc/vfstab doesn't mean disk not in use, if your system is clustered the clustered resources like mounted volumes will not show up under the /etc/vfstab
if you not familiar with unix u better dun touch.

  • Windows XP SP2 did not find the bootcamp hard disk

after making the windows partition ( 32 GB) with boot camp ( version 2) assistant, I restart my Macbook ( hard disk is a SSD drive from Intel X-25 M) with my Windows Xp install cd. The drivers are loaded but at the end when we have to choose which hard disk to choose, Windows tells me he cannot find any hard disk.
when I return to the installed Mac OS X 10.5.6, I can see both my Mac hard disk and the bootcamp hard disk.
It seems that Mac OS does the work properly, but the drivers to enter the Windows set up are not loaded.
Any one has a suggestion to resolve this?

please integrate intel ahci driver into your xp cd using winlite program.

  • What's the maximum hard disk size for the MBP?

Sorry the title might sound like a dumb question, but I was wondering if my MBP Core Duo, is future proof regarding the internal hard disk. Will it recognise any capacity, or stuck at a certain level?
Also what are the largest Apple supported internal drives currently available? Any recommendations?

That's kind of a gray area, but I think you may be right. Here are the conditions under which Apple can refuse service:
This warranty does not apply: (a) to damage caused by use with non-Apple products; (b) to damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, flood, fire, earthquake or other external causes; (c) to damage caused by operating the product outside the permitted or intended uses described by Apple; (d) to damage caused by service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider; (e) to a product or part that has been modified to significantly alter functionality or capability without the written permission of Apple; (f) to consumable parts, such as batteries, unless damage has occurred due to a defect in materials or workmanship; or (g) if any Apple serial number has been removed or defaced.
So if something breaks that's unrelated to your HDD upgrade, I think Apple still has to service it as long as you didn't break it while performing the ugprade. At least that's my interpretation.
