Finder slow to start up and other probs

Guys, please help me.
This evening I started up my computer and the desktop icons were rather slow to appear as was the top menu bar. Also, my wireless internet connection wouldn't work for me. Sure I had a great connection but just no pages would load. At this time I had MenuMeters and Clear Dock running.
I have uninstalled MenuMeters and Clear Dock and everything seems to be fine, however, I was wondering if this problem was caused because of the MenuMeters and Clear Dock or because I only have 25gig of free space left on my computer?
Thank you.
Zuzu.

i don't know how big your hard drive is, but out of the 60 gigs of my hard drive, i only have 10 left, and it runs great...
You can always try to repair permissions, it's always good for the machine, it always runs better after
Hope this helps, Regards
C

  • Yosemite finder crashes with previewig .txt and other files

    Hello,
under Yosemite  the Finder crashes with previewig .txt and other files.
Is this just my problem? Help please.
    Thank you very much.
    Regards.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Macbook slow to start-up and displays unusual start-up screen

    Hey everyone,
For the last week or so my Macbook has been behaving strangely when I start it up from sleep: it displays the screen you would normally get after your battery has fully emptied and you have just powered up your computer again (I'm not 100% sure if that makes total sense..it's the screen with the white bars on the bottom that slowly fill up before it takes you to your login screen) This only happens when my Macbook has run out of charge and automatically goes to sleep and then I plug it in and power it up again, which is why I'm concerned because my computer is plugged in when this happens + the battery is fully charged. Also, the computer is very slow to start up and takes about a minute before I can properly log in (the screen freezes, sometimes it goes black for a couple of seconds and then it goes back to normal) and finally the computer seems to be a bit laggy at times and slower than usual. I have already verified my disk and repaired all the errors that came up (using Disk Utility), and this doesn't seem to have fixed the problem.
I am very confused and cannot figure out why this is happening; I've bought my Macbook only a year ago and I always take exceptional care of it. Has anyone else come across this problem before? If anyone could provide any input or help me figure out the cause, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for your help in advance

Linc - Thank you so much for your response, at least I now understand what is causing this problem. I'm wondering if you know of a way to stop the computer from going into safe sleep (i.e turn this feature off) while it is plugged into AC power? This has never happened in the last 12 months that I've owned my Macbook and now I'm confused as to why this suddenly changed.
Thanks again in advance for your help

well ::: nothing modified lately and all of a sudden an unworkable mac os x!
when I start up my mac, everything starts up fine until the finder does its last reload to get ready to use ....
then it keeps crashing in a cycle of about 2 seconds and keeps on and on and on crashing!
fsck, Disk Utility and DiskWarrior show minor modifications, but after restart same loop crashing!
I can open apps with the dock, but not very useful
strange is that the finder works with another user! therefore a corrupt file in the home/Library/folder ::: preferences or cache file?! deleted all of them (desktop and finder) but finder will not start up and keeps crashing!
I am very glad I ordered Snow Leopard and that it will arrive soon ::: but in the meantime I would appreciate enormously your workarounds, help or hints to get the finder back to work and use my mac!

  • My Macbook is becoming very slow on start up and operation

My Macbook is becoming very slow on start up and operation. I have tried Mac Keeper but my small 2GB ram is always gone in the simplest of operations.
    Any help would be usefull

    Hello Chris,
A variety of things could be causing the slow startup.  The first place I would look is at the Login items on your MacBook to see if there are items in this list that are set to automatically start.  Having applications automatically start will increase startup time.  This article has the steps to do this:
Mac OS X 10.6: If items automatically open when you log in
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH6811
The steps from the article should work for Mac OS X 10.4-10.8; the only difference in Mac OS X 10.7 and 10.8 is that the Accounts icon is named Users & Groups:
To permanently prevent items from opening at login:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Accounts.
    Click Login Items.
Select any items you don’t want to open automatically, and then click the "-" button.
If you are still experiencing a slow startup after that, you might want to try the steps in the following article:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
    I hope this helps!
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • Slower on start up and shut down...normal?

Since upgrading my MacBook Pro seems to be slower on start up and shut down. Is this normal with Mountain Lion?

I am experiencing the same problem too...Anybody who can help us? Thanks!

  • Hanging start up and other oddities

    Hanging Startup and other oddities
I'm not especially proficient with the upkeep and terminology that comes with the programming aspect of Macs, so, if you do help, if you could please put whatever advice you have in lay terms, it would really help me out.
I've had my laptop computer for going on three years now, and I've never had a problem like this before. My machine started to really slow down yesterday morning, and generally when ever it does that, I just do a quick restart, and everything is back at normal. Well, not so yesterday.
To begin with, it took me to the grey screen, and it just stayed there for about ten minuets. It didn't change, didn't move to load the apple insignia, nothing. So I gave it a forced restart, and it did it again, except it load the apple logo.
Third time, it got me to blue screen. On restart #4 (force restart #3), it finally loads into my desk top, but the slow processing remained. I tried to go in and repair disk permissions, but then it froze up, and I forced a restart. This time, back to the grey screen.
I lost count as to how many time I restarted, but I finally went and rooted out my OS disks, and did a restart with disk 1 in, holding down PR+CtrlApple (It was my understanding that this would zap the P-Ram, and would at lest sort of help with whatever my problem was). Well, it took me to grey screen, but now a small folder is in the center of my screen. going from the finder icon to a "?" in the middle of the folder.
Did a restart holding down the "C" key, and it went into the install screen that launches from the disk. I was able to click through to select the drive I wanted, then my hard drive didn't show up as a possible selection. Yet ANOTHER C key restart, and this time it showed up.
Went through the first loading screen, where it is checking permissions, and everything's fine, but when I get to the installation process, it tells me there is an error with my perimeters, and I should restart and try again. Did this again, and I had to start over from square one.
I tried just a normal restart after three or four attempts at an installation, and now, whenever I load it without C depressed, a grey box shows up in the middle of my screen with an image of the globe on it, and it flashes. Nothing else loads until I do a restart.
It's my impression this, obviously, isn't a good sign and I should get in contact with someone who knows what they're doing and can walk me through it and get my computer running again. I thought I'd run it by you guys here before I called Apple, and, hopefully, you guys can help me out/help me better describe my problem. Any help you can give - links to other threads, experiences, what something means, what to tell a technician that I'm looking at/going through, anything at all, will help me tremendously.
Thanks for your help and time,
    Brittany
Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Owned Since April, 2004

Hey Gary, thanks for the welcome!
By the time I was able to pull your suggestions off of the form, I had already done a few things to my computer, as per recommended by the Apple site. This article is what I was pulling my steps off of.
I started at step 4 (Selecting the "Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications") and went through to step 8, semi-step i.
1 - I tried to start up in safe mode (Shift+Restart) and I logged several kernal panic screens before I even got to the apple insignia on a grey screen.
2 - I ran Disk Utility several times, and would come up with an error and a notice that the utility had quit. The first time I ran it, I noticed that it had found a lot of Oprhaned indirect iNodes, and by the second time the utility was ran, they no longer showed up in the right pane of the box. The fifth time it ran, it took roughly two hours to complete, and actually went all the way through.
3 - Still would not load past the grey screen, so I went through and did fsck check a couple of times, and it told me that my machine appeared to be ok. I got all the way through the step where it tells you to run a fsck, then type in a mv Preferences Preferences_old, then did a reboot and let my computer load.
When it finally did load (the actual boot up and load took about ten minuets, which is about seven minuets slower than normal), it took forever to do any commands that I issued. I went through and backed up all of my files onto my external, and then I went to go follow the rest of the step, and my computer froze up. I decided to save the rest of the procedure for today, when I can find some time.
The basic thing that I'm concerned about now is that the machine is running exceptionally slow. It loaded Safari and a couple of other applications I'm always in, but it took roughly ten times longer than normal to do anything.
Since it's recignising the machine and loading into my desktop, I was going to see if I can now do a safe restart and see if I can follow any of the steps that are dictated by the site, but I'm still not certian if that will work. Last time I tried it, I got a kernal panic screen.
    Anything I should try?

  • I seem to have inherited a lot of issues from previous macs i've had over the years resulting in my present iMac (21" 2.9Ghz i5) behaving strangely! Its slow on start up, and safari settings seem to reconfigure themselves ?? Any idea's ??

    iMac 2.9Ghz intel i5
    8GB
    21.5"
Data migrated from a macbook pro and previously from an older iMac.
Can I restore to a clean start-up and re-install apps (docs, photo's music etc)from time machine without
bringing the issues that are causing a few issues.
ie Some web sites will not open ( I have checked that the sites are live).
    Slow start up.
Some web sites ask me to check cookies- I've not changed them, and the problem is not constant ? (Safari is main browser).
    Any advice gratefully received.
    Tony

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin; clear; Fb='%s\n\t(%s)\n'; Fm='\n%s\n\n%s\n'; Fr='\nRAM details\n%s\n'; Fs='\n%s: %s\n'; Fu='user %s%%, system %s%%'; AC="com.autodesk.AutoCAD  com.google.GoogleDrive"; H='^[[:space:]]*((127\.0\.0\.1|::1|fe80::1%lo0)[[:space:]]+local|(255\.){3}255[[:space:]]*broadcast)host[[:space:]]*$'; NS=networksetup; PB="/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print"; A () { [[ a -eq 0 ]]; }; M () { find -L "$d" -type f | while read f; do file -b "$f" | egrep -lq XML\|exec && echo $f; done; }; AT () { o=`file -b "$1" | egrep -v '^(A.{16}t$|cann)'`; Ps "${1##*/} format"; }; Pc () { o=`grep -v '^ *#' "$2"`; l=`wc -l <<< "$o"`; [[ l -gt 25 ]] && o=`head -n25 <<< "$o"`$'\n'"[$((l-25)) more line(s)]"; Pm "$1"; AT "$1"; }; Pm () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=`sed -E '/^ *$/d;s/^ */   /;s/[-0-9A-Fa-f]{22,}/UUID/g;s/(ochat)\.[^.]+(\..+)/\1\2/;/Shared/!s/(\/Users\/)[^/]+/\1-/g' <<< "$o"` && printf "$Fm" "$1" "$o"; }; Pp () { o=`$PB "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'`; Pm "$1"; }; Ps () { o=`echo $o`; [[ !     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Imac finder slow to start - time incorrect after using windows via bootcamp

Everything works fine on my imac except for the following annoying thing that I would like to understand.
After using bootcamp to use windows xp (that also works fine), after I reboot back into Macosx, "sometimes" the finder is noticeably relatively very slow to start (builds the finder window bit by bit) and 'always" the time has been set incorrectly even though I think I have set the windows date and time settings correctly. I use a product available from the macosx downloads called 'cocktail" to maintain the mac - this seems to ok. Both leopard and windows always start - windows has crashed once over the last 6mths or so - macosx never.
The time will reset after I use the date and time pref and toggle the auto update.
Otherwise the imac seems nice and healthy with no hangs or problems - even time machine is working fine. I am generally very impressed.

  • Slow to start up and shut down

    Hi.
I have updated MacBook Pro from 2.16 GHz with OS 10.4.11.
The old one started up and shut down very fast. Now my new 2.4 GHz one starts up very slow.
I see the gray screen forever till finally see my desktop. It happens even I installed the OS on a cleaned HD.
Cleared all the cache, there is no log in items.
    Reseted the PRAM.
    No problem with Disk permissions.
    Both 1GB memories are recognized.
I did everything I could think of.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong ?
I would be much appreciated if any one know !
    Thank you.

    22 sec startup
Definitely an improvement over our old IBM AS/400 mainframe that once took six (6) hours to start up after a bad shutdown....

  • Slow motion, reverse playback and others

    Dear members:
After doing some research that included help files for Final Cut Express HD and Apple's support pages I haven't been able to find a straight and definited answer to my question.
I am trying to find ways to add slow motion, reverse playback and fast playback effects to my sequences in Final Cut Express HD but haven't found a way to do it. Some pages I found seem to indicate that these functions may not be available in Final Cut Express HD but they are not specific enough. I honestly can't believe that an application that is meant to provide professional results wouldn't offer these which are probably some of the most used effects in video.
Do any of you know if and how these effects can be used with Final Cut Express HD ?
In case it can't handle these effects, how much would an upgrade to Final Cut Pro HD cost if I am coming from Final Cut Express HD ? Is there an (reasonable) upgrade path ?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Best regards,
    Joseph Chamberlain

I'm sure you can do this w/ FC3xpress - although I haven't used that app in years- but you can try this:
-Select the clip you want to add the 3ffect to then press Apple-J
-That should bring up the menu where you can determine the new speed percentage.
-If it doesn't have the Reverse checkmark option (I don't think it did in earlier versions) you can do a negative percentage to make the clip play in reverse.
Also it looks like there is no way to upgrade from Final Cut 3xpress to Final Cut Studio
You can upgrade from a few apps but Express isn't included in that list.
The list is here if you'd like to see for yourself.
    http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/
And if you click the buy you have the option to buy the upgrade (intead of the crossgrade)

  • Slow Start up and other issues

Hi MBP users please help if u can...
I have a very slow start up time the last 2 days.
When finally up the hard disk is makes random ticking noises (not good when I'm recording music)
Also In the last couple of weeks I have been getting 'Random Shut Downs' Although this may have been due to a 'one click' surge protector and gang socket. This has been taken out of the loop and replaced with a standard gang socket - and I have no random shutdowns today.
I have read through previous posts regarding these issues and tried these solutions:
    Verified disk permissions
    Zapped the PRAM
    Apple Hardware Test
Nothing has worked - so I figure its time to start afresh - with a complete re-install!
I'm not looking forward to this as my software (Logic Pro) will take an age to set up to my requirements
Just wondered if anyone may know of another solution
Also as a side-note when I start up - I sometimes see the Hard Disk as my previous lap-top name/image (G4 PowerBook) could this be part of the problem?

Could be - because of the disk image, you actually have two mountable disks with OS X systems on them. Having two Mac OSs is not a good idea, and since one of them is not a valid Mac OS for the Intel-based MBP, this is a problem. Your occasional flash of the wrong disk suggests that this is your problem.
You might try opening the disk image from the G4 and deleting the System folder from it - you don't need it, and that is a likely source of the problems...
    Ps. 7+ minutes - wow!
