Finder sorting by kind is grouping most files as "other"

In the last week or two, I've noticed that when sorting a finder window by kind, most files are being grouped under the "other" category.
I realize that many file types don't get their own group heading but now it's throwing everything under there including PDFs and video files (pictures, however, still properly group).
Has there been a change to the way finder sorts by kind and is there a way to force file types into their own groupings when sorting that way?
Thanks!

looks like I had several file types unchecked in spotlight preferences (didn't realize that would affect the nature of the sorting in finder).
re-selected them, rebooted and it works normally again.
thank you for the quick response!

  • Finder sorts files as Kind not correct

    Please help me. I recently purchased a new MBA 13" running ML. When put Finder to view files as Kind, it separates files as movies, documents and PDF files etc. But it seems to cannot differentiate between images files and other documents. It combines all images and other documents such as zip files and word documents as the same types while this does not happen before. I tried view setting to sort by None, then sort by Kind again it still combines images with other docs.
    I tried restarting, relaunch Finder and reset spotlight index it doesn't help.
    Please help me.
    Thank you in advance.

    You are not "sorting," you are "arranging."
    An arrangement is a grouping. You can sort within arrangements, or you can sort without arranging.
    The menu and button displays the arrangement options when you click it. To select sort options, hold down the option key and click same button/menu item.
    You can see both at same time in the View Options dialog.
    If you set arrangement to "None," you can set a Sort option without any grouping.
    I'm on an iPad for the moment, so I can't check how it groups, but it may just group as "Documents," not as specific types of documents.
    Try just sorting by setting the Arrangement to "None," then set the Sort to "Kind."

    Bridge will do the job. View > Sort > ByType. Then you can choose a group of one type and put the files in a separate folder.

  • Sort by kind display problem - only folder icons

    Hi, I have the following problem with Finder in Lion (happened in all 10.7.0 to 10.7.3):
    When I use the "sort by kind" function in Lion, usually the categorie is displayed in a lighter text with a line underneith. Now it happens from time to time (suddenly) that the display changes and instead of the lighter text, the categories are displayed as "folders". Except they are not folders, the sorting still works and I cannot click on them. The category titles just look like folders and even have a folder icon in front of them.
    When I re-select "Sort by kind" the problem is gone for a while.
    I took a screenshot of how it is supposed to look: http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/3913/findergood.png
    And how it looks after Lion changes to the "display problem view": http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/2347/finderbad.png
    Note that in the second screenshot the very left column still behaves like expected but every layer underneith (that is to the right of it) has the display problem.
    I also encountered that when this happens, I am not able to simply drag-and-drop files in Finder anymore. Instead I have to select them first (by blicking on them) and then drag them. Usually this first click to select is not necessary. Again, after re-selecting "sort by kind" this problem is gone.
    Also, this happened on all the Macs I own that run Lion, so I'm pretty sure it is not a system specific problem.
    Is there a solution to this issue?

    Does no one have any idea on this?

  • When a group of files is selected, how can I copy just the file names?

    I used to be able to select a group of files in a finder window, copy, then paste the names in an email or document. It no longer allows this. Is there away around this other than copying each file name individually?

    I'm also at 10.5.4, just had forgotten to update my profile.
    One "gotcha" can be if the application, such as Mail, is actually able to DO something with the files. In the case of Mail, it can add the content of many sorts of files to the message, or add the files to a message as attachments. That's why the Clipboard will say the content is "text/items" since what will be pasted depends on the destination. This is relatively new in OS X--I remember being astonished when it first turned up.
    TextEdit, IF it is in Rich Text Format, can also handle a number of different sorts of files. If you want to use TextEdit as the "intermediate" destination to get a text list, be sure you go to the Format menu item, and select "Make Plain Text" before you paste. Actually, since I use TextEdit mainly for tasks, such as hand coding HTML, I have its default behavior to open all new windows in plain text, then if I actually want some formatting, I change it to Rich Text. In Rich Text it will accept pasting of all sorts of graphics files, so you see the jpeg, gif or png, you can even paste sound files in as actual sound files (and they'll play, too), plus the icons for folders and other files (such as PDFs).

  • Efficent method to sort data from tab delimited text file

    I am currently writing a program to sort through data that was acquired and display it on a graph and some other indicators.  The file is a tab delimited text file with possibly 100,000s of data points.  the current method that I have tried using was that if I wanted all of the data from Oct, I would parse out the month from the timestamp, compare that to the desired month, and add it to the array if it is the same.  Other possible options of sorting are yearly and daily, possibly even hourly.
    The method does work, however it does take some time (up to a minute on a P4 3.6 GHz with 2 gb ram), and most of the other computers are not nearly as fast or with as much memory.  Is there a more efficent method to sorting the data??
    I attached my sorting vi as well as a sample data file.
    thanks for the advice.  It is saved in LV8.0.1

    First of all, "sorting" has usually a different meaning (Sorting and numeric array ascending or descending, a string array aphabetically, etc.). Your data already seems sorted by date and time, you just want to pick a subset having certain characteristics.
    The main problem that is slowing you down is your constant growing of large arrays. This causes constant memory reallocations.
    Since your data is already sorted by date and time, all you need is to place your data in a sutable data structure, find the start and end point of your selection, then use "array subset" for example.
    Your code also seems to have a lot of unecessary complexity. See for example your "test for sort data" (see image below).
    the four cases only differ by filename --> only the file name belongs into the case and the file operation outside the inner case. Even better, just use autoindexing.
    that shift register does not do anything, because it always contains the same data. Using "index array" with index wired to [i] is equivalent to an autoindexing tunnel.
    You have a case structure to select which files to read, skipped files give you an empty array. Do you really need to do all these operations on an empty array. Why not place all code inside the TRUE case??
    Below is an image of one possible code alternative that addresses some of these points.

  • Showing Folders first in Finder sort ???

    In almost every other release of OS X there was a tweak to edit the Finder frameworks so that you could have Finder, when sorting by "Kind/Type"you could display folders first. Well of course they broke that in Leopard.
    Has anyone discovered a way to reinstate this nice little feature so that folders don't appear at the bottom of the list view but at the TOP like PathFinder?
    For those that are curious here WAS the "tweak" (go to System: Library: Frameworks: ApplicationServices.framework: Versions: A: Frameworks: LaunchServices.framework: Versions: A: Resources. Whew. Within that folder, you’ll see the English.lproj folder. Highlight it, and then select File: Get Info. In the Ownership & Permissions area, click on the Details triangle, click on the lock icon, and then click on the Owner pop-up menu and set it to your user name (enter your password if asked). Leave this window open; you’ll be changing it back in just a minute.
    Inside the English.lproj folder is a file named Localized.strings. Drag it onto TextEdit. Find the line that reads "Folder" = "Folder"; and insert a space before the F in the second Folder.)
    TIA,
    Peter

    The Launch Services hack doesn't work in Leopard. The string "Folder" has moved to inside the Finder bundle. Here's how to hack it:
    Anyway, you can hack things to make this behave how you want. Launch /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app, then type:
    cd /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj
    sudo chmod 777 InfoPlist.strings
    sudo chmod 777 .
    open InfoPlist.strings
    It should open up in a text editor like TextEdit. Inside it you will find "Folder" = "Folder". Change it to "Folder = " Folder", note the ' ' (space). Save your change. Then Control-Option-Click on the Finder in the sidebar and select "Relaunch". When the Finder comes back up, the Kind string for folders should be what you changed it to in the InfoPlist.strings file (' Folder'), and if you sort by Kind (with the arrow in the kind column header pointing to the top) you'll see Folders sorted at the top.
    Enjoy...

  • Automator - Finder - Sort Folder - Print to Textfile with size result

    Dear Apple community,
    i am trying the following.
    1. Find Finder Items
    2. Sort Finder Items (by kind:folder)
    3. New Text File
    This sorts the source folders by size and prints the results in a text file but only the / directory structure but not the folder size. How can i add the "size" information in the text file?
    Thanks for your help

    The Sort Finder Items action just returns files and folders, but you can use a Run AppleScript action that adds the size information:
    1) Ask for Finder Items
    2) Sort FInder Items
    3) Run AppleScript (I threw in a handler to clean up the formatting a bit):
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;

    width: 720px; height: 340px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #FFEE80;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into an Automator 'Run AppleScript' action">

  • Finder Sorting

    Is there a way to default EVERY folder in Lion to sort by Kind and Alphabetically?  Also, I want this sorting to show up in whatever folder view I look at i.e. List, Columns, etc.  It is driving me crazy.  I can do it individually, but not globablly.
    Thanks,
    Patrick

    It isn't possible to replicate Windows exactly (it never made much sense to me to do it that way, anyway, but I know familiarity counts for something).
    The closest you can get is to sort list views by clicking on any column heading. Clicking the 'kind' will sort all the folders together. It isn't quite the same, though, since each application's documents will be grouped (i.e. all Keynote documents are grouped together, as are all PDFs, all plain text files, etc.)

    we have some w7 machine getting stuck on boot up before ctrl-alt-del, once verbose message was turned on for troubleshooting, we noticed they were stuck at "applying group policy files policy".
    we had let it wait for more than 60 minutes at time and it would still be stuck. (thou mouse / kb still responsive)
    this problem however, is not re-produceable on demand, if we power off the machine, it boots back up with no issues.
    checking the group policy log, we didn't find anything weird, but was not sure if that's the right place to look thou.
    we do have two group policy preferences pushing out host files as well as desktop shortcuts, might that be the culprit?
    thanks!

    My recommendation: Use Group Policy Preferences as you like, but do NOT
    use the "Files" extension.
    Why? GP Processing at Boot/Logon is a synchronous foreground process
    that cannot be interrupted (as you are already experiencing ;-)).
    Replace GPP Files with a script that runs some robocopy commands. Start
    this script through a scheduled task at boot or logon, so that it can
    run asynchronously in the background, not disturbing the user experience.

  • Selecting a group of files and putting them in a newly created folder?

    If I select a group of files in finder or on my desktop -- is there a command to create a new folder and put them in it? (I'm thinking of how you can take a selection in iTUNES and create a playlist from the selection).
    (I know how to create a folder and then drag my selection into it).
    Thanks!

    Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and paste in the following:
    tell application "Finder"
    make new folder at desktop
    move (selection as alias list) to the result
    end tell
    This script expects that two or more items are selected. You can enable the script menu in the AppleScript Utility and then add the script to the menu for easy access.
