Finder, spaces, new windows

With spaces activated and with "When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application" UNchecked, the Finder is the only application which switches to a space with an open window anyway.
So, for example, if I have a finder window in space 2, but no finder windows in space one and I click on the Finder icon in the dock... whoosh! ... off to space 2. If I try the same scenario with Safari, the Safari app becomes active in space 1 and I can open a window there if I desire.
This is not new to Lion. But every new update makes me ask: is there any way to change this behavior so that Finder acts like all other apps and follows the preference set in the Mission control preference pane?

Good lord. I am a complete loser with the assigning of points buttons.
Oh well.
Thanks Captfred - but that is not the functionality I am trying to get the Finder to reproduce. With all spaces specified  I have the same window appearing in every space - I want different windows in different spaces.
My problem is I keep hitting the Dock icon thinking it will bring the Finder to the foreground (like any other app), but it keeps switching spaces.
It's not that big a thing, of course. But I always thought of the Finder as just another app, so I wish it would behave like just another app!

  • Finder, spaces, new windows (reprise)

This is a repost of a question which I inadvertently marked as answered.  Then I started assigning points like Santa Claus on crack.
My incompetence, of course, but I prefer to blame Apple.
    So, let me try again.
    Here's my question (again):

I expect not too many people do it the way I do, or we might hear more about it. I tend to assign spaces to different projects, so I have different finder windows in different spaces.
Once, I found a terminal hack (or something) that fixed this behavior in Leopard. But the SL update destroyed it and I could never figure it out again.
Anyway, thanks for looking at it, and I certainly did the feedback thing. I did it for  Leopard and Snow Leopard, too, back in the day.

  • Spaces - New Window opens behind existing window

I have an annoying situation - I love Spaces - but it has a New Window characteristic that drives me nuts.
For example, if I click a website link in email or other application, the linked window will almost always open behind a window that I'll already have open in Safari.
Or if I double click an image in Finder, it will open behind open windows in Photoshop or Freehand.
It would be great if these new windows would open in front!! Any suggestions? I can't find any settings to change this.

  • Open Finder in new window

In Finder, you can right click a folder and open in new tab.  Is there a way to open in new window?

Command when double clicking on the folder will open a new Finder window and retain the original one. Option-command will open a new window and close the old one (so in effect the same as just double-clicking except that the window size and shape may be different).

  • Finder opening new Windows despite always open in new Tabs setting.

I have already submitted this to Apple. But wish to open a discussion here, to probe and see, if this issue frustrates other users. It would be nice to get some empirical weight behind my already submitted request.
The Issue: I have already set in Finder »always open in new tabs«. Despite this, when for example one clicks on »view Download in Finder« (Safari), or via a Spotlight-search clicks CMD+R to view a search-result in Finder, a new Finder-Window gets launched. This is really frustrating and quickly clutters up the desktop. Could Apple please fix this, so that »always open in a new tab« really does just this? (Or at the very least, opens a new tab in the last opened Finder-window).
The same irritation ist true for Terminal. I just wished users would be have the option to open everything in the same (e.g. the last opened) window.

  • Why is Finder opening new windows every time I drag a photo onto the desktop?

I've been having a couple of issues with my desktop (I am running 10.7.5):
    1. When I save a photo by dragging it onto my desktop, it opens a new Finder window. It's only started doing this today, and I haven't changed any of my Preferences. How can I turn this function off?
    2. I used to be able to drag a photo from my web browser to my desktop to save it. When it saved, it would stay where it was dragged. However, about a month ago, the files began snapping into rows rather than where I dragged them as well as piling up in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. How can I fix this so that they stay whereever I drag them when saving?
    Thanks!

    It's a bug in Chrome.

  • Acrobat Pro XI frequent crashes when using New Window feature

As a lawyer using Acrobat Pro XI to review legal documents, I find the New Window feature invaluable since it lets me view different parts of the same document at the same time.  However, when I use this feature I encounter frequent crashes, more often if I insert a comment in one of the windows.  Inserting those comments are very important to me.  Is there any way to avoid the crashes while using the New Window and Comment features together?

  • SRW.SET_HYPERLINK - Handle SPACE in filename AND open in NEW WINDOW

    Issue #1:
using srw.set_hyperlink to get a handle on *.pdf file on remote server. Report is launched as PDF. PDF that is opened via the URL launches in same window as report. I need run report as PDF, click hyperlink to get handle on another file which should launch in New Window.
SRW.SET_HYPERLINKATTR only useful with HTML and HTMLCSS. Javascript? If so, sample code?
    Issue #2:
possible that file retrieved will have spaces in its name. Hyperlink defaults %20 in the spaces of the name, but the link does not successfully retrieve file. Tried replacing spaces w/ %20, but like defaults does not retrieve document; due to actual file name not having the %20 in its actual name. Is there are way to account for the spaces in the URL then "remove" them to find the correct file and open in new window?
Tried using virtual path as well as physical path.
Help with either or both issues is truly appreciated,

  • Spaces: create new window makes same Space slide in

I"m just starting to try to use Spaces, after seeing the clear benefit to it.
I have Space 1 set up with a couple of finder windows to make moving things around easy and in Space 2, I also want Finder windows, but when I hit CMD-N to create one, I'm sent back to Space 1 and a new window is created there!
Also, if I create a new folder on the desktop in Space 2, then open it, I am also taken back to Space 1 where that folder opens.
this tells me that I'm not going to get what I need, or that I just don't yet fully understand Spaces.. can somebody shine a light on this for me?
is it that Finder is either assigned only to that first Space, or to All?
My goal is to have Spaces where both Applications and Finder windows reside.
    thank you!

I think you want the Finder assigned to all Spaces so new finder windows will open in the current Space you are in. To assign the Finder to all Spaces, it is not quite as straight forward as assigning other apps to all Spaces.
Do this to assign the Finder to all Spaces:
    1. Go to the Spaces tab in System Preferences;
    2. Click the plus ( + ) to add an app and select Other;
    3. Navigate to the folder Macintosh HD» System» Library» Core Services» Finder.app
    and click the Add button.
Back in the Spaces prefpane, select Every Space next to the Finder.app under the Space column.
If it doesn't work how you wanted, delete it from the Spaces assignment by clicking the minus ( - ) button.

I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space (32 GB), and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run itunes from an external hard drive? I have tried to follow some of the directions on this site, but am having no success. Thanks.

iTunes will run fine with the media on an external drive.
However, I suggest that a tablet computer with a tiny hard drive is not ideal as the primary computer for managing an iTunes library, even a small one. If you have another machine, perhaps a big, boxy, inexpensive old desktop with a decent amount of storage, that might be a better choice.

  • Open PDF's in new window in document library when using "Find a file" search

I need to be able to open PDF's in a new window from a document library when using the "Find a file" search built into the document library "All documents" view. I currently have the following javascript on the page:
    _spBodyOnLoadFunctionNames.push("setTargetBlank()");
    function setTargetBlank()
    { $("a[href$='.pdf']").removeAttr('onclick').attr("target", "_blank");
This works great when going to the document library and navigating through the folders then clicking on a link.
The problem is when someone goes to the document library then uses the "Find a file" search and then they click on a link. The "Find a file" search does not do a postback (reload) of the page, therefore my javascript to find the PDF links
and make them open in a new window does not run for the links on the page.
I have read the following article but this does not seem to offer a solution that will work in this situation for SharePoint 2013 (Office 365): http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sharepoint/en-US/7ad3224c-3165-47ae-95bc-4f3928e2f9a8/opening-document-library-pdf-in-a-new-window-sharepoint-2013?forum=sharepointgeneral
I suppose the idea solution would be to somehow tap into the event that is fired when using "Find a file" search to run my javascript and update the links for the search results.
Can anyone offer any solutions to this issue?

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to open PDF files in a new window from a document library when using the "Find a file" search.
As you said, the "Find a file" search does not do a postback (reload) of the page, therefore JavaScript to find the PDF links and make them open in a new window does not run for the links on the page.
I recommend to use JS link to achieve the goal. Create a JavaScript override file and upload the JavaScript file to the Master Page Gallery, and then set the JS Link property of the document library web part to point to the JavaScript file.
Here are some links about the JS link in SharePoint 2013 for you to take a look:

  • Finder crashes when trying to open a new window

When trying to open a new Finder window, Finder will crash and relaunch but won't open an actual new window. Neither can I use the Go To Folder menu.
I tried relaunching Finder, restarting my MacBook and repairing my disk. Unfortunately, nothing has helped so far..
    Any ideas?
Small addition: I first noticed the problem while trying to open a DMG file. I don't have any reason to suspect this file is malicious though.

I faced the exact same problem.
Please check How to activate an event handler manually? Read the COMPLETE thread... especially the second last entry. Valery has given a perfect workaround for this problem.
And it works absolutely fine too !

    Navneet.

  • Finder always opens new window

    Hello everybody,
maybe this is just a simple one but since the last Update to 10.5.5 I have the problem that my finder aways opens a new window when I hit a folder. I have already checked the preferences and the option "always open folders in new window" is definetly turned off.
Same happens if I use the key kombination APPLE+DOWN ARROW. Since now this has opened the folder in the same window but this has changed, too.
    Can somebody help me?
    Thanks and bye.

This works fine for me on 10.5.5.
To narrow things down, create a new user and log in as that user. See if the problem happens for that user too. If it doesn't then it is something specific to your account, not the OS. If it doesn't happen for the other user, log in as the user that is misbehaving and navigate to ~/Library/Preferences/ and drag com.apple.finder.plist to the trash. Then Control-Option-Click on the Finder icon in the Dock and select Relaunch. When the Finder comes back up, does the problem still occur?

  • Finder always opens new windows

Finder always opens new windows for me. It didn't used to do this (its been doing it at least since I was using 10.5.6), and "Preferences > Always open folders in a new window" is not checked. Any ideas?

    JRokeach,
Sorry if this sounds to simple, I'm hoping that it is, but in a finder window do you have the toolbar showing? Because if you don't it will open all the folders in there own windows. To fix there is a little button in the top right that hides the toolbar, also if you goto view hide toolbar it will do the same.
If that isn't the case try removing the com.apple.finder.plist found in Macintosh HD -> Users -> YOUR USER -> Library -> Preferences, and trashing it.
    Hope that helps,
    Weston
