Finder stalls when attempting to read a large HD directory
I have a 6T HD with apex 3000 small video clips. When I open the window to look at the contents, the beach ball spins, and the finder does not respond. I must use force quite to relaunch the finder - then additional attempts to view the HD contents results in the above once again. Any ideas as to how to fix this?
I routinely open folders containing tens of thousands of documents without any significant problem, so this is more than likely a NAS issue.

Finder and iTunes stall when attempting to access ext. firewire HD
Since I upgraded to 10.4.10, the Finder, iTunes, and other apps that are attempting to access files on the external hard drive completely beachball/stall when waking the hard drive from sleep. Additionally, the dock and menu bar bork.
The only fix is to unplug the hard drive (without properly ejecting it!), and instantly, all the apps become responsive.
Anyone have information on this. My external hard drive, which contains my iTunes music and other files, has become virtually useless.Same thing is happening to me.. Both at home on my Powerbook G4 and work on my G5.
Was working perfectly. Both systems running 10.4.10.
Lacie 80gig FW400 drive.
Thinking it was the drive failing I promptly cloned it.
DiskWarrior and Disk Utility show no signs of error. I've reformatted, Zeroed all data many times. The drive 'appears' to be fine. I have copied my music back on to the drive; but it Hangs finder.
I've tried to re-import the music through iTunes to the drive. Again, gets about halfway and hangs finder.
Occasionally Disk Utility will return : "error could not unmount disk" when checking it out with Repair/Verify Sometimes it's fine. -
Timeout error (Hex 0xBFFF0015) in NI VISA test panel when attempting to read from device
Hello,
I am attempting to control the set position of three daisy chained four-way actuator valves. They are VICI Valco and model # EUHA. I have them connected via RS-232 to USB into my computer. I was able to communicate with them when I sent some simple commands through hyperterminal and when I open MAX the devices appear and the panel says the devices are functioning properly. However, when I go into the test panel and try to run some default commands, I get the timeout error, 0xBFFF0015, when reading the command. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Go to Solution.Okay I'm running it again today and I'm noticing that its displaying results when I attempt to read from the valve but still tells me it timed out. Aside from the timeout error, both hyperterminal and visa are providing comparable results. The two commands I have been trying to read from the valves are AM (to check what mode the actuator is set to) and CP (to check what position the valve is at).

Mail Crashes When Attempting to Read a Message
Hi. When I click on an e-mail in Mail, I receive a message stating that Mail has quit unexpectedly. This happens with any message, including ones I've previously read. I've run the Disk Utility and no problems were found. I reinstalled the Combo update, but that didn't help.

iMac Mac OS X (10.4.9)You may set up Mail again from scratch and import your mail back afterwards as follows. There is nothing in the crash report you posted that makes me believe it would make a difference, but it may be worth a try nevertheless:
1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/. Move (not copy) the entire Mail folder out of there, to the Desktop.
4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop.
5. Open Mail and set it up again from scratch. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and check that everything works fine.
6. You’ll have to re-configure all your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
7. If Mail works fine now and you had any messages stored in local mailboxes, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions to import your mail from the old Mail folder that’s now on the Desktop. Import the Mailboxes folder first, then each of the POP-username@mailserver account folders.
8. If .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you wish and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there. -
Finder freezes. As soon as I click onto my "shared" external hard drive (3TB WD - wireless via Airport Extreme), finder immediately freezes / eternally spinning beach ball (until I restart finder). Can still access wirelessly on another Mac (not on Yosemite).
Please help!Ok - for a while there, the hard drive would not come up on the desktop - but now on a re-boot of the compter, or if I disconnect the hard drive and re-connect it, a message comes up with three buttons which say:

Authentication failure when attempting to pair mouse
For the last couple years I've had my Iogear Bluetooth mouse paired nicely with my Powerbook via a USB Bluetooth dongle (the built-in bluetooth doesn't work). Last week I paired my mouse with a friend's MacBook for several hours. When I tried to resume using the mouse with my own Powerbook, it was no longer paired, so I made a trip to Bluetooth Mouse Setup to initiate a new pairing. Unfortunately this no longer works; it finds the mouse successfully, but shortly after it reaches the "Pairing with your Bluetooth mouse" step, it displays a message in red lettering:
The pairing attempt was unsuccessful due to authentication failure. When ready, click Continue to try again.
I've retried the process many times during the last few evenings, but to no avail. Discoverable is turned on. I even reinstalled the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo update - still no go. Today I took my Bluetooth USB dongle and mouse to a Windows computer at work, and pairing worked just fine there, so I know it is not a hardware issue. Has anyone encountered this pairing error, and been able to resolve it?I've been going crazy with this issue the last two days.
I had previously been using a Targus Bluetooth Mouse for Mac, but I have had to revert to an old Powerbook G4 as my main computer. I wanted to continue using my bluetooth mouse so after two tries I finally found a bluetooth dongle that the Mac recognizes. It seems to work like a charm, and is only annoying because of its bright green LED that blinks ceaselessly.
However I was most disappointed to find that when attempting to pair with my mouse, it recognized the mouse, connected, but then stalled out on the pairing process with the same red text message mentioned here.
I tried pairing with my old Palm m515 and that worked perfectly.
I booted up to a 10.4.11 install on an external drive and found the mouse to pair up and work perfectly.
Then I installed 10.5.4 on an external drive and it too connected perfectly. I tried creating a new user on my main drive's 10.5.8 install and that did not solve the problem. At this point I thought my main drive's 10.5.8 install was corrupt for some reason. I backed up my drive via Time Machine and proceeded the 6 hour new system fresh install.
My Leopard install disc is version 10.5.4. The mouse paired and worked great after the initial install. It was all for nought, however, because upon installing the 10.5.8 update on this untouched fresh system, the mouse was no longer recognized and would stall at the pairing process. I even got a kernel panic this time.
I don't know what Apple did between 10.5.4 and 10.5.8, but whatever it is made pairing with a bluetooth mouse via a Bluetooth dongle seemingly impossible. I assume there will be no fix for this since they have moved on to Snow Leopard.
Since people are having this same problem regardless of their dongle brand or mouse brand, I suppose I can be confident that this is not a hardware issue. Especially since the hardware all works perfectly up to at least 10.5.4. I'm not sure when it breaks because I just go straight from 10.5.4 to the 10.5.8 combo update. -

Problems converting PDF to MS Word document. I successfully converted 4 files and now subsequent files generate a "conversion failure" error when attempting to convert the file. I have a large manuscript and I separated each chapter to assist with the conversion; like I said, first 4 parts no problem, then conversion failure. I attempted to convert the entire document and same result. I specifically purchased the export to Word feature. Please assist. I initially had to export the Word Perfect document into PDF and attempting to go from PDF to MS Word.

I'm sorry to hear your conversion process has stalled. It sounds as though the problem isn't specific to one file, as you've been unable to convert anything since the first four chapters converted successfully.
So, let's try this:
If you're converting via the ExportPDF website, please log out, clear the browser cache, and then log back in. If you're using Reader, please choose Help > Check for Updates to make sure that you have the most current version installed.

CFIMAGE gives "attempt to read data outside of exif segment" error when trying to resize jpg
When trying to resize a jpg using cfimage I receive the following error "attempt to read data outside of exif segment". Any ideas on what causes this or how to fix it? 1) Do you have all of the latest updates applied?
2) Did you try all of the work-arounds listed in the comments. Granted some of them are definite hacks
3) Just to cover all the bases, do you get the same result with both ImageResize() and ImageScaleToFit()?
If all else fails, you could always go the java route and try some java code to do the resize. Obviously not the ideal, but it is worth a shot. IIRC there is a thread around here somewhere with the cf/java code. But that was from before the switch in forums and I will be darned if I can find it right now!
Update: I will play around the sample image you posted tomorrow. Just to see if I can come up with anything. -
When attempting a reinstall of iTunes, I cant delete the file C\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Internet Services\Shellstream.resources due to same error message as described above for iPod file; however i can't find it anywhere in the Task Manager
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.

Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards? -
Finder crashes when scrolling in a large directory
I came across a weird problem today on a clients power mac (OS 10.4.11)
They have a large directory (~200 sub folders) and when you scroll down the list of sub folders the finder crashes when you get the the "N"s
It looks a lot like when explorer crashes in windows (everything is gone minus the background and eventually the icons and start menu reappear) except this version just happens a lot faster
I did some research and people were saying that deleting the com.apple.finder.plist files and rebooting fixed it but that did not work with me
anyone see this before?I haven't seen that but I don't have a folder with 200 folders inside. I do have a folder with 9000+ files inside with minor Finder issues, but not the one you see.
Additional computer information for the client's computer? How much RAM on the computer? How much free space on the computer's hard drive?
What happens if you try to jump to, say, the W folder by typing the letter W?
Have you verified the drive with Disk Utility? Possible directory corruption.

Lightroom trial doesn't show complete menu selections or import button. Also get error message on launch: An error occurred when attempting to change modules. I am unable to find/see the following file to try renaming the SLCache and SLStore files: System Library/Application Support/Adobe. Any ideas? I only have 16 days left on the trial and have been unable to get it to work on my Macbook Pro. This is all I am seeing after Lightroom opens. Thanks!
Thanks to both of you for attempting to help. I finally figured out what was wrong . . . it was a Permissions problem. Very frustrating, but after scouring the troubleshooting tips I finally found the one that solved my problem. I had to add a User and give it Read/Write privileges to Lightroom. The file I had to add the User to was Hidden on my Mac, so that added an even bigger challenge to the mystery. Only a few days left on my trial version! I hope I have time to try it out!

it is unbelievable to me that this issue existed so long ago and hasn't been fixed. I just bought my first apple product (iphone4s) and am ready to toss it. Despite hours of searching on these forums I have been unable to find out how to fix my calendar. I have rebooted, adjusted settings to no avail. without a calendar, i can't use this product. Also, i am not technologically brilliant and can't handle the advanced fixes that some people recommend.
