Finder status bar showing wrong available drive space

The status bar in finder windows is saying that I have more space availible than I actually do.  This problem is not occuring on external drives. Everything from quick look to third party system monitoring apps all show the correct space availible, and the only thing that says otherwise is this finder status bar.

Having the same problem here - MacBook Pro (one week old) 10.8.2.  Started up from the "repair disk" and ran disk utility - both repair and fix permissions.  No correction.

  • Finder status bar way off

Has anyone else noticed the Finder status bar showing much more disc space than there actually is?
It's also inconsistant. Right now mine says 330gb available. I only have a 320gb HD.
I've also got that empty trash problem when I try to empty large files out of the trash. (Takes forever)  I'm going to try the Terminal method next time to see if that straightens it out.

Hadn't noticed that but you're right.  Finder says 553GB and about this mac says 574GB.  Disk utility and click on the drive itself both agree with 574GB.   The finder status bar is inconsistent.

  • 10.10.3 Finder Status Bar information is wrong, TB not GB

Have you noticed how the 10.10.3 Finder Status Bar information is wrong and it shows Terabytes left on a drive of 750 GB after update. See attached. This is not possible

There's something wrong with your hard drive. Or you have Time Machine enabled and all that space is taken up by backup snapshots. I would do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • Finder is not correctly reporting available disk space

finder is not correctly reporting available disk space
my drive is 50% full but finder shows there is only @ 35% left
the difference is more than anything needed by the system
any ideas on what is causing the problem?

    Try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • My 2007 iMac (lion) starts, logo appears, status bar shows up, takes 2 mins to finish, then shuts off

My 2007 iMac (lion) starts, logo appears, status bar shows up, takes 2 mins to finish, then shuts off. Please help!

This sounds like a hard drive issue. First I would try to boot to safe mode: OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support
If that works do a backup ASAP with Time Machine: Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support or copy your important files to an external drive if they are not already backed up. If that does not work, Boot to recovery:  OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
The next step would be verifying and if needed repairing the hard drive using Disk Utility.
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support
If it successfully repairs, do a restart and see if it boots as normal. If it cannot be repaired, it means that the hard drive has failed/is failing. If you do not have the data backed up you could try getting the data using target disk mode: OS X Mountain Lion: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode ,booting from an external drive that has OS X installed on it: OS X: Installing OS X on an external volume - Apple Support, or 3rd party data recovery service.
After data is backed up or recovered, you would need to do an erase and install of OS X: OS X: How to erase and install - Apple Support
If it fails to erase, then the hard drive needs to be replaced.

  • Why does my status bar shows GPRS?

I recently updated my iPad 3 to iOS 7. Why does my status bar shows GPRS and not 3G?

No service refers to the availability of cellular service. If there was no Wi-Fi signal you would see only a dot instead of the Wi-Fi fan symbol.

  • Info showing incorrect hard drive space

Inside the finder the hard drive is showing about 23 gigs used after deleting user file (5g applications, 12 gig library, 6 gig system, 15 megs user) and creating new one (in order to sell) but get info on the hard drive icon is showing 52 gigs used... could this be right?
    thanks

    Hello,
Ok. I have a 750G SSD drive on a mac pro retina.  Finder says I have 605G available.  While I about this mac says 215G available.  I have tried to turn off timemachine so I can have the correct numbers.
10.8.3 osx is my OS, I have 16G of Ram and 2.7Ghz intel core i7.
When is apple going to fix this finder bug.  And from reading the thread i get the impression that someone at apple thinkgs this is the correct behavior for finder.  That is flat wrong, I am a developer and I can tell you that available memory should ALWAYS be correct.  I have run a verify on my SSD to get the disk on par.
As I no longer trust my apple disk my next steps are to back up and move to another machine.  And then start calling apple to have this fixed.
So when is this to be fixed??

  • RMBP doesn't show correct 'available HDD space'

    Hi,
I'm using rMBP 15" early 2013 with OSX 10.9.5. My problem is (for a while) OSX doesn't show correctly my available HDD space. It is internal 256 GB SSD. How can i know that it doesn't show correctly? Because my Disk Utility says 69.64 GB free space but my Finder says 92.14 GB (Huge difference) ! Also my PC partition tells about different story but i don't care it (Who cares silly billy Windows? ) My guess is Disk Utility says correct.
This problem started with Diablo III. I installed it (13 GB download for a patch !!! c'mon Blizzard) and after that my Finder starts to lie to me (Before installation, both Disk utility and Finder says 101 GB approx.
    Any idea?
p.s : İ did several times Repair disk permissions and repair disk. Please don't advise it..

  • The old status bar showed a lock icon when on a secure site - where is that lock icon in vers 4?

The status bar was along the bottom of the window. At the right end of that bar, a lock icon would appear when you are on a secure site, like banking or bill pay. With the status bar now gone, where do I see that lock icon?

The padlock is no longer a part of Firefox; it can give users a false sense that a site is secure by not supplying all of the information about a site. Familiarize yourself with the '''''Site Identity Button''''' in Firefox:

  • New PopUp Status Bar showing up in bottom-right corner, covering items. How do I change this to bottom-left only?

I don't know if I accidentally caused this. But the new PopUp Status Bar defaults to the bottom-right, which ends up covering up vital links on certain websites I use. I just find this super annoying and I would like to have it only show on the bottom-left. Is this possible?
Or do I need to disable it somehow?

    OAS : 10.1.2.3
I've got a form with a menu attached and in the form status bar I see besides record : 1/1 also <BSC>

What Are Acronyms , and That Appear On The Forms Status/ Message Line? [ID 1076485.6]
Modified 28-FEB-2003 Type PROBLEM Status ARCHIVED
    Problem Description:
    ====================
What do the acronyms - OSC, BGM and DBG that come up in the Forms Runtime
    console window actually mean ??
    Problem Explanation:
    ====================
When a form created with Developer 6.0 uses a custom menu, the console may show
    the following:
    <OSC> <BGM> <DBG>
These are not displayed in Developer 2.1 or 1.6.1. They are not related to
menu security, and so will appear even if no menu security is specified.
    Solution Description:
    =====================
These symbols or lamps refer back to SQL*Menu version 5.0.
The definitions can be found in SQL*Menu manual page 1-7.
    They are:
<OSC> = Operating System Commands available.
    <DBG> = Debug
    <BGM> = Background Menu.
This was logged as BUG:919591. The bug is now closed.
These symbols have no meaning today and it is currently unknown why they have
shown up in Developer version 6. For example, the Host pl/sql command
has superceded the <OSC> menu macro.
