Finder taking forever to find files

Just upgraded to OS10.5 a couple of weeks ago. When I'm searching (cmd F) for files on one of our external drives it takes forever to find them. I can go and find them manually sometimes faster than the computer can find them. I can also find files pretty quickly on any of our servers, but the external drive is alot slower. I usually start the search and move on to another job and then go back after about 5 minutes to retrieve the files that it has found. I'm not using Spotlight, I've never understood the purpose of that, it doesn't find what I need at all. Why is the finder sooooo slow in this OS version?

Spotlight indexes mounted volumes, putting file/folder names and their included metadata into a database for CMD+F to use when searching for things. Details in http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/Leopard/leospot.html Also, see my mod to Finder's Find at http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080229204517495 for what you can change so you can find stuff excluded by Spotlight's default structure.

  • I have been trying to attach and open files on iCal.  One minute they will be there, and the next they are gone.  Also, it seems to be taking forever for the file to even be opened after downloading it.  Is there a way to correct either of the problems?

I have been attaching the files using my Mac, but when I go to look at the file on my iPad (to see if others are able to view the attachment) the attachment is either gone or will not open.  It is taking more than 24 hours to have an attachment ready for others to view, and even then sometimes iCalendar shuts down.  How can I fix this? Note: I will go back into iCloud on the web, and the document has sometimes vanished.

    Hello JeenC,
I found an article with steps you can take when you experience issues with attachements on your iCloud calendar.
I recommend reviewing the steps in the section titled "Troubleshooting Calendar attachments" in the following article:

  • Trying to move files to trash takes forever, and finder windows take forever to load files/apps

after recently installing Mackeeper (yes, I know..) and attempting to uninstall, my macbook pro 13" al. is taking forever to move a file to the trash, and it equally takes forever to open a finder window. running 10.6.8.

MacKeeper is an exception to the rule that system modifications should be uninstalled according to the developer's instructions. Although not generally recognized as such, MacKeeper is in fact a trojan, because the developer distributes an uninstaller that purports to delete it, but leaves behind something that causes popup ads to appear in the user’s web browser. Try following the instructions here:

I can't personally vouch for the accuracy of those instructions, but others seem to have had success with them.

  • Finder file size on external drive

When I do Finder->File->Get Info, I get total size of contents of current folder in the window.
But when I do the same thing on an external drive, I do not.
Is there a way to make that info show up?
    Thanks.

I went to the Iphoto Library file in Finder, selected it, then moved the file to my external hard disk drive, which has a 500GB capacity.  So, even though I called this "backing up" maybe it was "copying" - but I do not understand the difference.
A backup is a copy on a different device - so copying to an external device is a backup - UNTIL you start using that copy as your library - then it is the library and you have no backup  --  and note that if you do not have a backup you are 100% guarenteed to lose all of yoru photos sooner or later - computers, software and people fail and when they do a current backup is the only thing that will save your photos and other files
Finally, I re-opened Iphoto, and when it asked me to select a Library, I chose the library file that I had copied onto my external hard drive.  All of my photos then re-loaded into Iphoto, and I have been looking and them and selecting some for deletion.
So when you did this you started using the iPhoto library in the EHD and everything you do is reflected there
I believe I understand what you've said - that changes I make (whether deleting, renaming, cropping, etc.) to photos in this file are being made directly onto the external hard disk drive.
    Yes
So, to be absolutely specific, when I delete a photo in Iphoto to the TRASH CAN and then EMPTY the trash can, this photo is now and forever GONE from the external hard disk drive.
    Maybe
To delete from iPhoto when using a default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state)  drag a photo from an event to the iPhoto trash (or select it and press delete) and then empty the iPhoto trash and with iPhoto '11 under Lion empty the system trash - then the photo is gone forever from the external hard drive
And edits I make to photos are SAVED to the external hard disk drive.  IS THAT CORRECT?
    Yes

  • Find files and establish links to help organize my computer

I was advised to post this here instead of where I initially posted it:
Like a lot of people, I have accumulated eBooks at different times and they are scattered all over several drives. I want to organize them. I am trying to remember how to make a UNIX script to do what I want. Then I can put it on a cron so that it will automate the process for me
    What I want to do:
    Find all .epub files
place a link to those files in file:///Users/my_name/Documents/ePub Links/
If this can't work then even to find and move all of the .epubs would work; however, I would prefer to use a link because I also want, with suitable alteration, to use the script to organize my pdf files. Some of those pdf files need to be left where they are because they are manuals; but, again, I would like a central list so I do not keep looking, online, for files I already have.

Smart Folders is the way to go, however, to find files, use "find".
To find in your Home Directory and any attached drives:
    find ~ /Volumes/ -iname '*.epub'
    To create a symbolic link:
    find ~ /Volumes/ -iname '*.epub' -exec ln -s {} "file:///Users/my_name/Documents/ePub Links/" \;
Not sure if find will look in "file:///Users/my_name/Documents/ePub Links/" (which you don't want), but if it does, we can exclude this directory with the -prune option.

The applet opens up as to print, then an error message appears, unable to find file.  But if I save the file to my desktop, then open it up, it prints fine.  I have this version running on 4 others servers, no problems there.  Anything else to look for?  I've also checked the version of java on the servers, also the same version Java 2 Runtime Enviorment SE v1.4.2_06, and Runtime Enviorment 5.0 update 9?  Also checked to make sure the plugins were using the same.   Any help would be appreciated.

can not find file, must locate each song one at a time need to restore my whole library

    Hello BadSteve,
It sounds like iTunes seems to have lost track of all your music and you must locate each file individually. I would recommend at this point that you check for 3rd party plugins to see if there are any causing an issue:
iTunes: Troubleshooting issues with third-party iTunes plug-ins
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3430
If the issue persists after removing the plugins, I would next try recreating your iTunes library:

  • Find function no longer finds files

Does anybody know why might my Find function in Finder no longer finds files and how to fix it? It finds only a limited number of files and they have nothing to do with the search term. I have selected "Computer" as the searchable entity.

Instead of using the Find function,I use the free Find Any File app http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/30079/find-any-file Try it.

  • Itunes 9.2 can no longer find files.

Using Mac 10.4.1, With itunes open, the music files are all there, but when I click to play, it says they cant find file. All the files are on the main hardrive where they have always been. Not sure what to do. Garage Band also does not mix down to ituens as it has in the past, but goes to the hard drive where the other music files are store.  It appears a new itunes has been created as well but it is empty.

Something has happened to breaks your links.  Have you verified your hard drive with Disk Utility?  You may have directory corruption.
As for solutions, the only one I can think of is to rebuild your iTunes library.

  • Okay so I just got a new MacBook and I'm setting it up. I decided to not download all of my files to iCloud drive and its taking forever to load to the next page. Is this normal for it to take so long? After all I didn't even download my stuff?

why is it taking forever to load!?

The files you are loading into the new computer are by wi-fi? If you have no other option
that may be OK but slow. A faster method would be Ethernet cable from internet router
or modem, instead of wireless. Most of the setup process can take some time.
What are these files? Where are they now?
Do you have a backup on-site, & not online?
Did you check to see if the operating system was updated as part of the setup before use?
The Software Update can locate later parts to the as-shipped system, that may be needed.
Other upgrades or new apps are through the Mac App Store, some through App Store, etc.
As part of the setup, you could use a migration assistant if you have a backup from the old
computer or have other files saved in an external hard drive to import.
Hopefully your process won't be drawn out too long...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I am trying to install itunes 10.5.1 but it can't find file IXP609.TMP where can i get this

i am trying to install itunes 10.5.1 but it can't find file IXP609.TMP so stopping the upgrade.   how do i upgrade itunes?  I tried uninstalling but it can't find another file 389 so I can neither uninstall nor reinstall.  Any thoughts please?

    Hi Rick,
by "repair" I mean I went to the control panel, option - programs and features, and in the list of all my installed programs I selected "Apple Software Update". On top of the screen you find the options Uinstall, Change and Repair. I clicked the repair button and that did the trick. After the repair I could uninstall the program. I also uninstalled iTunes, Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support en Bonjour, thus all Apple programs. Then I installed iTunes 10.5 again and everything went fine.
    Success,
    Peter

  • Spotlight and finder cannot find files as of a certain date. What can be the problem and how to solve?

Spotlight and search field in Outlook on MacBoon cannot find files as of a certain date. What can be the problem and how to solve?

    Reinstall on both.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.
Restore your iPhone to reinstall iOS. Be sure to do this while connected to your computer and iTunes.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content and settings.

  • Can't find files using Finder

    MBP running OS X 10.8.4
    2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
Starting about two weeks ago, Finder stopped finding files on my MBP.  Previously, if I were to look for a photo named "IMG_1234", I would simply search on "1234" and any and all files containing 1234 in the name would appear.  Now, I get no return to my Finder search.
Spotlight still does return a full list of all files though.
I believe that whatever this problem is, it is also impacting other search-related functions (e.g., when looking to attach a file in Hotmail or to upload a photo to Facebook). I'm now unable to find a specific file on my HD using the browse function of those webpages.
This problem seemed to originate on a day when I was uploading photos to Facebook.  I was able to find and upload several files without issue, then the ability to find specific photos just stopped working.  It was at that point that the Finder search started returning no responses.
Any suggestions regarding causes/solutions to this issue?  The files for which I am searching are definitely still on my HD.  I'm wondering if I inadvertantly turned off a setting somewhere that impacts where Finder is searching.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Where to find file AForm32.api mentioned in Acrobat SDK?

    Hello everyone,
A paragraph under the following path in Acrobat SDK
"Acrobat Interapplication Communication > Interapplication Communication API Reference > Acrobat Forms Plug-In > Forms plug-in OLE automation"
suggests to place the AForm32.api file in the Acrobat's plug-ins folder:
    Quote:
Registration in the Windows registry (which is different from the class object registration described above) happens every time Acrobat loads the plug-in. Therefore, you must run Acrobat at least once with the AForm32.api file in the plug-ins folder before its type library can be found for object browsing within the Microsoft Visual Studio environment. This is also necessary in order to allow early binding. Declare the program variables as objects of the corresponding classes in AFORMAUTLib, and not simply as Object.
    Question:
Does anybody know where can I get the mentioned file AForm32.api ?
    Thank you.
    surotkin.

AForm32 is now AcroForm – it's the same thing.
However, I don't believe that we expose the COM APIs in the Standard edition – only in the Professional edition.
