Finder thinks USB drive is CD, DVD, iPod

I have an external USB Lacie Drive that is partitioned and use for backup with Time Machine (HFS format) and Windows 7 backup (NTSF format), my settings in the Finder are to show only CD,DVD, and iPods, and Network on desktop but the Windows drive shows up on the desktop, and will only be hidden when I unselect CD, DVD, and iPods.
I have trashed the Finder plist, as well as the Desktop, and nothing has changed. Is there another preference file that is corrupted to correct this issue?

I have been having similar problems on a G4; since moving to 10.4 from 10.3.8. I don't know if it was the software or a conflict; after I can't eject the disk, I also can't shut down, log out, force quit. . . . .
I updated the OS, installed a processor upgrade, and a new video card on the same day. It looked like everything worked until I tryed to eject a disk and it wouldn't open the tray.
I end up powering the machine down just to eject a disk. It doesn't matter what is on it, once it is used by any application other than an installer, they stay in until reboot.
I get errors stating mirroragent is not responding most of the time. Sometimes the error cites "dnotifyd" whatever that is.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Install the Windows support software from the USB drive. Note that Boot Camp Assistant, in OS X 10.8.3, doesn't support the option to burn the Windows support software into a disc.
Instead, you can try a different thing. Start in Windows and download the Windows support software in it > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1638 Then, decompress the file and run the Boot Camp drivers installer.
If you can't access to the Internet in Windows, start in OS X and download the Windows support software from the same link. Decompress the file, right-click the folder which will show up after decompressing the file and select "Burn". Finally, start in Windows and install the Boot Camp drivers

         Q. What sizes of USB Flash sticks are supported?
         A. USB Flash sticks are supported in 64, 128, and 256 MB sizes. No other sizes are supported.
         Q. Can I use any USB memory stick for this application?
         A. No. Only Cisco USB memory sticks are supported.
    Q. Can I boot an image directly from the USB Flash module?
    A. Yes. USB drivers have been added to rommon, starting with version 12.4(13r)
         Q. Can I format the USB Flash module on the router?
    A. Yes. You can format the module on either a router or a PC. You must  specify "FAT16 file system" as the file system for the PC format process  to use.
If your setup satisfies above conditions you can get the router to boot up with the IOS on the USB flash
If you are in ROMMON mode, use 'dev' to find out the name of the USB Flash (should be usbflash0).
    set BOOT=usbflash0:
If you are in the router,
    boot system flash usbflash0:

I did a Google search and found this link:
    http://www.gilsson.com/usb_drivers_download.htm
It had the Prolific USB-to-Serial driver for WinXP. I downloaded & installed it. It created a COM5 port that my Palm Desktop found automatically. I hit the HotSync and, presto!, everything works perfectly. I only spent 5 hours trying to solve this problem for my dad.
He hadn't HotSync'd his Palm IIIxe to his home laptop since NOV2005!! And he hadn't HotSync'd to his work PC since he retired in JUL2008 (and he doesn't have access to that PC anymore).
I'll repeat this post in the other threads I queried on. I hope this helps someone solve their USB-to-Serial Adapter Driver problems.

  • Can't find external USB drive

Okay, I can't figure out why or exactly when it occured, but I realized I can't access my external LaCie drive through my Airport Extreme. I never had any problems with it before, but maybe after installing an update or something, it has now made it inaccessable. I can see the drive in the Airport Utility, but when I can't mount it onto the desktop or use it at all. When the Airport Disk Utility tells me that its available and I try to connect to it, it tells me "Connection Failed". Also, if I try to connect to it through the Finder, it tells me it can't locate the alias for the Aiport base station to which I have the drive connected. It all totally confuses me. I can't really tell where the problem lies. I'm having no problem connecting to the internet through the Airport, but I can't mount the drive from it. Aargh!

Hi John, and welcome to the discussions!
For the busted alias, might try...
Finder>Preferences>Sidebar>Show Network Icon... toggle this OFF then On... sometimes a re-boot between the two helps.
But first, use Disk Utility to repair permissions... a good idea both before and after any update/upgrade.

  • Bootcamp woes, unable to boot from USB and DVD drive reads all DVDs blank

My partner and I are completely unable to install Windows using Bootcamp.  We have tried dozens of solutions on the internet.
2011 iMac (purchased in by me and my partner 2012) reads all DVDs as blank.  We have (hilariously) another Mac, an MBP, that has the same exact problem.  You'd almost think "Superdrives" eventually just stop working or something.  So obviously we can't install Bootcamp on the iMac using a DVD.
But what about a USB stick?  Well after modifying the plist file and writing a bootable Windows USB and trying to boot from that, we were greeted with the mysterious and apparently yet-unsolved "no bootable device" error.
So our iMac can't boot from USB drives or read DVDs.  We've only owned it for two years.  And this is the second Mac we've owned where the Superdrive has died.  And we don't even use DVDs more than like once a year.
But anyway, can someone tell me what we're supposed to do if we want to install Windows aside from throwing money away to buy another Superdrive that is probably going to die again in a year?  Maybe a way to make our mac boot from our USB stick?  Something?
    Thanks.

Should you have another drive with a MBR, use it to rule that issue out. Alternatively create a GPT on the flash drive and try to boot from it.
What options are there for the usb controller/boot priorities/order/options? Does the laptop recognize the usb flash when already in bios setup? Should there be any form of choosing the device to boot, use that with the flash drive in the socket, then switch it with the external drive.

  • Recovery without a USB drive or DVD drive

I just received a NB305 as a gift and want to create recovery media. I do not want to spend the money for a large capacity USB drive or a DVD drive.  I have an external HDD I use to back up my other laptops.  Can I copy the files over to that drive?  Can I copy the files over to that drive and then run the recovery software to make disks?
Why is Toshiba so cheap that they didn't include a recovery disk?

they all put it on the hdd no. if you read your users manual then you would know that pressing zero during start up would run the recovery service. and it is a netbook. there is no dvd drive what good would recovery discs do? just get a 16gb flash drive or an external dvd drive to make the recovery media. or you can just hope the recovery partitions dont get damaged but i wouldnt count on it.

  • Windows 7 Professional XP Mode won't recognize internal DVD or external USB drives

Windows 7 Professional XP Mode - won't recognize USB external drives or internal DVD drive
I recently purchased a new Toshiba laptop and ordered configured with Windows 7 Professional so I could use XP mode for some older programs.  The Virtual Mode and XP mode work ok, but the computer will not
recognize any external USB storage drives or the internal DVD drive.  This prevents me from saving and transferring any file that I work on in XP mode.
,I also tried to copy and paste the file from XP Mode over to a document file to 7 Professional Mode, but it won't allow that.  It also will not recognize any printer when in XP Mode,
so I can't print out the file either.
Basically, I have no way to store or move a file out of the computer when in XP Mode.
Does anyone know what I need to do so that the computer will recognize the USB drives and internal DVD drive when I am running in XP mode?

    Checked these ?

  • IPod Causes iTunes to Hang if Printer or USB drive are connected!

My iPod is a Classic 80GB
The problem began when I upgraded to iTunes 7.7 and I hoped iTunes 8 would fix this, but it has not.
*If either my printer (a HP C4280 all-in-one) or a USB memory stick are connected iTunes hangs when my iPod is connected. If both the memory stick and the printer are disconnected, iTunes will eventually recover and recognise the iPod after a minute or so. Furthermore if my iPod is connected when Windows is starting, it will hang at a black screen until the ipod is removed!!*
I have contacted Apple's phone support, but this has been unsuccessful in resolving this matter. I ended up wasting an afternoon uninstalling and installing iTunes.
    Any suggestions...? TIA...
    <Edited by Moderator>

It may not be the iPod that's causing the problem. I've had similar issues with two models of Epson printer and a Dell PC running both Vista & XP. I have one of the same printers on another machine (a different Dell model) which works fine! The symptoms I get mean that if I connect the printer, ANY external USB drive-like device fails. iPod, USB memory key, external USB hard drive etc. Windows still lists the device, and often shows one or more layers of folders however all the folders appear to be empty of files. Scary or what!?! Sometimes the printer can also prevent the PC booting up. I suspect that it takes a number of factors, hardware & software, to trigger the issue which means it's unlikely to get resolved since it's both hard to reproduce & determine exactly which subsystem is to blame. It's not ideal, but I just shut down the external drive when I want to print, then turn the printer off and the drive back on when I'm done.

  • Shuffle 2 - device not recognized...  USB Driver?

I got the Shuffle 2nd Gen, plugged it into my PC, and it blinks orange with no install box on Windows, and a "device not recognized" error. Nano works fine on my computer, and my Shuffle works fine on a Mac laptop, so customer service told me it must be a problem with an outdated USB driver.
Here's the problem: I don't know where to get the USB driver update, because my PC is custom made, and I don't know who the manufacturer is. The customer service guy says to find the maker of the motherboard, but I'm not 100% sure how. My Device Manager says "VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller" is the only listed Enhanced (2.0) USB Port. I used a program to find the motherboard manufacturer, and I think it's a "Chaintech 7VJL APOGEE."
Can anyone help me find a USB driver? Might something ELSE be the problem?

    Hey 655micha,
I'm sorry you're having an issue with a USB device. Do you get an error window that pops up? If so what does it say? Have you checked Device Manager? Is is just one device that isn't working? Has it ever worked before? Is it just one USB port in particular that isn't recognizing devices?
What model do you have? Here are the steps to find your product number. FN + ESC is the easiest way to find that information.

  • USB drive only mounts as Local Drive Need it to mount as USB Drive to create recovery drive

subject pretty much says it all.  Using an HP Sleekbook 15, it tells me to make recovery disk.  I opt for the USB drive option and buy a new Sandisk Cruze Glide.  Plugged it in.  Started Recovery program to make disk.  Program tells me to insert the USB drive or plugin my DVD burner.  I check the file explorer and find the USB drive is mounted as Local Drive E:.  No amount of inserting and removal will trigger the program to continue.
Doc read on SanDisk forum implied this is a windows 8 compatibility issue where Win 8 requires new USB drives that meet Win 8 compatibility to mount as Local devices.
I saw here that the USB drive MUST be a removable device inorder to be made bootable.
Help! this is inconsistant and negates the whole reason for using removable media if it can't be made to be seen as a boot recovery drive.
I need a solution, can those who know please advise.

Not all USB 3.0 is Windows 8 compatible. It will have the compability logo on the back or front of the package.
I have run across several interesting articles that mention Windows 8 can create the Recovery Drive with I assume any flash drive.

  • Can't Access any USB drive

I just installed Windows 10, and untill now all is working fine except for the fact that I can't access any USB Drive or PEN.
When I try I always get the following message:
this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer
How can I fix this BUG.

    Hi,
I don’t think it’s a bug, it could be driver or settings issues.
Please run rsop.msc to see if there is any related Group policy was configured to block USB device.
First I would like to confirm with you that expect USB drive, if other USB device can be recognized fine.
If not, I recommend you to update or reinstall the USB controller under Device manager.
If this issue only happened on USB drive, let’s try following suggestions:
Suggestion 1: Check hidden device drivers
    Unplug your USB storage device.
    Type CMD in Start Search.
    Right click cmd.exe and select
Run as administrator. Click Yes if the User Access Control box pops up.
At the Command Prompt window, type
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 and press the Enter key.
Using the same Command Prompt window, type
devmgmt.msc to bring out the Device Manager.
At the Device Manager top menu, click
View and select Show hidden devices.
Browse down to the Universal Serial Bus controllers and click the
    + to expand the list.
Probably you will see some light grey devices, e.g. USB Mass Storage Device or USB Composite Device. Right click each and every light grey devices and select Uninstall. This will remove whatever "hardware profile" linked
    to your USB storage.
Attached your USB storage device and see if it works.
Suggestion 2: Check if the drive can be recognized under Disk management:
Right click the Start icon and choose Disk management.
If you can find your USB drive there but there’s no in File explorer, follow these steps.
Run cmd as admin, type following commands   to enable automount feature:
    Diskpart
    automount   enable
    Details   for this command:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753703.aspx
Then try   to assign letter for your USB drive again by using commands below:
Run cmd as   admin, type following commands:
    Diskpart
    list   volume
sel   volume x [x present the volume number of your USB drive]
    assign   letter=g:
Another thing is if you use USB3.0 to connect the drive, change it to USB 2.0 to see what's going on.
