Finder thumbnail view like Windows XP?

Windows XP has a nice way of looking at thumbnails that are large of all the pictures in a folder which I'd like to do in Mac OS X without using iPhoto or GraphicConverter, and without having to leave the Finder. Has anyone made a hack that enables that in either 10.4.11 or 10.5?

Yes, but I'd like to see that on the Finder. It is difficult to instruct someone who is new at Macs how to go through all those extra steps to get the same feature, and it would be good for them to have that feature right on the Finder since they are beginning to get into digital photography.

  • PDF Thumbnail view in windows explorer

Hi guys, hope you can give me a hand! I`m about to lose my mind here.
I have 4 machines with adobe reader 8.1 installed and in those 4 machines I can see my pdf files as thumnails (they´re books, so I see the cover of each one of them). On my 5th computer not only have I adobe reader 8.1 installed but Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard. But when I select thumbnail view in windows explorer it just does not work.
I`ve tried changing the default program to open pdf files but again all I see it´s a thumbnail alright but it only displays the adobe logo not the first page of the pdf file.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

  • AI CS6 thumbnail views in windows explorer

Does anyone at Adobe think it might be a good idea to enable AI CS6 thumbnail views in windows explorer again, uh, I mean, we're GRAPHICS DESIGNERS, and we, uh, need to browse IMAGE FILES in AI and PS. I know there are $19.95 third-party apps out there, but we're paying good money (thousands of $ over the next few decades) to get the BEST SOFTWARE ON EARTH, neh? I thought my brand new Windows 7 machine was bro-ken when all I saw was dumb-icons boo...

Lol.  Adobe has known about this stupid problem for about 4 years.  Since Vista x64 started gaining popularity.  Acrobat 8.x was the first version where people really started scratching their heads wondering why & when the problem would be fixed.  Then came Acrobat 9.   And now "X".  Still not fixed, well, I'm sure next year we'll have Acrobat 11, so keep holding your breath.

  • Application Thumbnail view (like Win7) in ML?

I have several users that are accustomed to Windows, and a request came though to inquire about application thumbnail views.
In Windows, lets say you have 3 Excel sheets open. You see the Excel documents open on your task bar, and when you hover over them you can see that you have 3 files open and a thumbnail of each is shown.
Is there anything similar to this in the Mac OS? It is confusing for some users because you cannot tell how many files are open in a particular program; all you can see is that the program is running in the OS (White dot next to App icon in the Dock).

Thanks much! It's suprising... Ive read quite a bit of documentation and havent come across that feature.

  • How to display files in thumbnail view ???

i want to display my avi file list in thumbnail view as windows explorer is providing... can anyone tell me... how can i implement the same??

You can use a [url http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/list.html]Wrapped JList to display item in a grid. You would need to provide a custom renderer.

I have been searching every other day for over a month trying to find a fix in Windows Safari with no joy.  I want to resolve, not switch browsers. Please offer up a solution that only refreshes the Top Site thumbnails once a day or as some controlable interval.  Started about two versions ago, now on ver 5.1.5. Windows 7 64bit.

I think I solved the wifi connection problem, just by switching off completely the router! sounds trivial, but in this case it worked!!!
the funny behaviour of the trackpad/cursor still persists. any suggestion???

  • New Pages no longer allows SECTIONS (in thumbnail view window) to be re-arranged like before?

New Pages no longer allows SECTIONS (in thumbnail view window) to be re-arranged like before? You could drag and drop sections within your document the same way you could drag and drop pages in Preview's PDF documents. So how do you re-arrnage your document now?
    ALSO
You used to be able to duplicate/copy a section/page by draging it with OPTION-LEFT-CLICK to a space below or above in the thumbnial window. The same way it works in PREVIEW in a PDF document. Did I miss something or is this also a bug?!
These were extremely helpful to me and I hope many others. Can anyone help!?
    Thanks :-)

Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Archive/trash Pages 5 and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

  • Thumbnail view/Icon association change in Windows 7 with CS4

I just put CS4 on a virgin Windows 7 build and I'm struggling with a couple of things...
    1. How do I get Windows 7 to display the proper file association icons for image files? With XP it was easy to change an icon so that my JPG files uses the Photoshop JPG icon. But in 7 I have not been able to figure it out.
    2. Thumbnail view with an image preview is not working. No matter what size I resize the icon in 7 I still get a big fat "PS" icon and not an image thumbnail. If there's a "switch" somewhere that I need to flip, I haven't been able to find it.
If anyone can shed some light on these issues, particularly #2, that would be great. I'm amazed at how much a hard case Windows 7 is with file associations and Photoshop CS4. I got BMP, JPG, PNG, and others to open with Photoshop but it did require a bit more effort. With the "default program" list, Photoshop isn't even mentioned and I had to hunt the executable down to tell Windows which application to use. What's amazing is Quicktime is listed as a "default program" but CS4 is not.

OK, sounds like you found the File Type Association.
As for the display, for some years, the old psicon.dll has been gone from Windows. For a few versions, one could just add it to Windows, but I do not believe that has worked since Vista. Instead, use Bridge, and not Windows Explorer.
As this has been an issue for years, it could well be that MS, or Adobe, will rewrite the psicon.dll to work with Win7, or that someone else will take up the challenge of doing so. Could already be out there, and I have just not heard of it.
    Good luck,

  • Saving Jpeg crashes Finder in Thumbnail View Mode

    Hi all.
Anyone have this happen to them?
My finder crashes and relaunches itself when I do the following:
Have a finder window open in thumbnail view mode, open a jpeg image in Photoshop, then resave it. It happens without fail EVERY time I do this.
I do not have the problem in list mode or that other mode (whatever it's called - the one that lets you see the subfolders).
I'm running Panther on a PowerMac G4 and have had this problem from day one. I just did a clean install a month ago and the same issue exists.
    B.

Actually Onyx appears only "reset" the Spotlight index, it doesn't force it to reindex or anything else that I'm aware of.
I read up a bit more on Spotlight and tried to trash the index and associated files, hoping that it would reindex and all would be fine. However apon reboot it kicked back into it's old routine of cycling and eating up 99% of one of the CPUs.
I decided to finally just disable the spotlight feature completely using the DisableTigerFeatures program.
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18182
Although I'm disappointed that I can't use Spotlight anymore (never used it much to begin with though) I can happy report that both my CPUs are mine again, my software and games are running snappier, my firewire hdd, iPod, and secondary SATA HDD not unmount and vertify just fine.
Sad that for months and months I basically allowed my G5 Dual Processsor to be crippled by a buggy (in my estimation) piece of software. Finally I feel like my computer is safe to work on and I'm enjoying it for the first time in quite awhile.
Thanks again Francine, had you not pointed my in the right direction I'd still be running a single processor machine that crashed all the time

  • Finder hangs on "thumbnail view of video files, relaunches itself

Within the past week I upgraded from 10.4.11 -> 10.6.5 on a 3-year old MBP (Intel). Sometimes when viewing Finder windows with video files everything hangs and I am treated to my favorite sight, the cheerful spinning beanie..... Sometimes when it hangs, Finder relaunches itself taking about 10 seconds to do so. This is mostly a hiccup, since Snow Leopard Finder restores the individual windows with their directory paths. (This happens several times a day, and would be really annoying if relaunch meant resetting everything to User directory level like it did in earlier OS versions.)
Possibly related is on occasional black screen "blink" lasting not more than 2 seconds. This is unsettling.
Related question - does Finder use QuickTime, or some limited implementation of QuickTime, as a resource to display thumbnail video? Could this be a symptom of the utility trying to do too good a job showing video thumbnails (consequently sucking up too many processing resources), which I often don't want to look at anyway?

    Update on this issue -
No serious problems except one time the screen went black and wouldn't come back (usually no action is required before the screen refreshes itself.) Lately, I've seen it go black about every 2-3 days with no major interruptions in operation. The obvious question is this: Does this indicate a bigger problem, perhaps with hardware, which will make my computer crash for good in the near future?

  • Thumbnail view in Finder

Is therea thumbnail/preview view in Finder. I found the column view which will preview a selected document. I'm looking for a view that will display thumbnail previews of all documents in a folder, just by viewing the folder.

If there are images such as Jpegs you can usually view them in Icon mode (right of the column view on the top nav bar). If you need them to be bigger go to the
Finder menu: --> View --> Show View options (apple + J) --> Icon Size.
Just remember that all of your icons will be enlarged. And you will have to do the reverse (also in the main finder window) to change them back.

  • Windows Explorer Thumbnail View

    Hi guys
I am making a photo gallery system software in the main window I want to show images in thumbnail view. however I see people that they use JButton to show each thumbnail I think that's unconventional so I am trying to create something like Windows Explorer thumbnail view but I don't know how do it. I have a class named thumbnail which will get an image and resize it to thumbnail and put a border around it but i don't know where to put that thumbnail. I think JTable is a good place since you can select the cells but then again i don't know how to add an image to a cell
    thank you

Thankx actually I kinda got it working however there are two problems
1-how can i add images dynamiclly I mean I want start with zero row and and whenever someone imports an image to system I want to show the thumnanil of that in the table. meaning adding that image to next avaialbe cell
2-if i have 6 column and 10 rows that's 60 cells but imagine if i have added only 51 images added so that take 51 cells and 9 cells are empty which a row and half and the system has option to select all thumbnail (like explorer) but the problem is it will even select the cells that are empty since it is a table
if someone know how to do this or give me a hint i appreciate it
    thanks

  • Photoshop thumbnails display improperly in Finder colum view

I've just been noticing that Photoshop files with Channel masks do not display thumbnails properly in Finder colum view. The thumbnail is displayed with the mask blocking the image, rather than the composite view. This only occurs in Colum view; Icon and list view are normal. Can this be fixed? Thanks.
    G4, iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

As I mentioned above you can see the mask being applied by Finder to the composite thumb if you have a large enough number of these type files in Group view in a search results window. And if you open the file and have two or more alpha channels, you can rearrange their order and change the appearance of the thumb, so YES it is the alpha channel, has nothing to do with layers. Furthermore, this is new behavior in Finder. It didn't do this before, and we're talking about going all the way back to psd files created many years ago and displayed correctly in Finder versions going back to at least 7.5, through OS X Panther.
When I first noticed it I thought I had simply forgotten and left an alpha channel active when I saved the file. I soon discovered that was not the case: the alpha channel can be UNchecked, and Finder still applies it. This would be "a feature, not a bug" if in fact Finder applied the mask if it was active, but that is not the case. Finder used to work with these files in all views, and it still does work correctly in List and Icon view, using the Photoshop custom thumb in those views. This all means the problem has nothing whatsoever to do with Adobe's file format. In fact, Finder is actually reading the format, rather than displaying the proper thumb that is in the file's resource fork, in order to do its deed in the specific views affected by the problem, while it displays the provided thumb (as it should) in other views.
    Send feedback to Apple:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
I did way back when I first noticed this problem. And let us hope it is fixed in the next version of Finder. I doubt anything is going to change in Tiger at this late date.

  • How to enable Windows Explorer Thumbnail Viewer to display PSD files?

    Hi,
I am using Adobe Photoshop Extended CS5 (64-Bit) on Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate (64-Bit).
When using Windows Explorer to browse through file folders, I notice that the Photoshop files (.psd) do not display a thumbnail preview, like other graphic files do. How can I enable the Windows Explorer Thumbnail Viewer to display PSD files?
    Thanks for your help,
    The MiJiT

Adobe software doesn't provide a 64 bit codec and as far as I know there is no freeware to do it on x64 systems.
There are two pay-for applications that I know of:  Mystic Thumbs and Ardfry's PSD codec

  • Finder: Changing from thumbnail view to column view takes me back to the root folder.

    Hi,
I was hoping someone could help me with this as it's getting a bit tedious having to re-navigate back to the folder I was in. This problem is only occuring when I am working from an external NAS Drive.
I need to switch between thumbnail view and column view regularly, but whenever I change from thumnails to column - finder jumps back to the root folder, meaning I have to work my way back to where I was.
I can't figure out how to stop this happening! It doesn't happen when changing from column to thumbnails, only the other way round..
    Thanks for any suggestions!
    Sarah.

    Hi Barney,
Thanks for your reply Unfortunately though I already use AFP on the NAS drive and still have the problem, so it seems this is an issue with both AFP and CIFS..
