Finder treats folder as application

Mac OS 10.8.5 / MacBook Pro (less than 1 year old)
I checked out some software using SVN.  One of the folder/directory names is foo.app and another is bar.workflow.
The finder shows foo.app as an application and bar.workflow as a workflow (Automater) file.  I can
cd into these folders in the terminal and ls -F shows them as directories.  I checked them with GetFileInfo
and it shows that they are folders.  I tried Get Info to see if I could change "open with" but neither show
that option.  I used Onyx to do some cleanup/repair and restarted but the problem persists.  I even
tried deleting the files and doing an SVN update.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
TIA

  • I can't find iweb folder in application support

    Hi
I formatted my macbook. Before format I back up domain.sites2.
Now I want to import domain.sites2 to new macbook (I mean formatted macbook)
I read forums and I saw that I have to copy+ paste this file to  library/application support/iweb
But there is no iweb folder in application support.
I double clicked domain.sites2 while located in desktop; İweb opened but I can't see my older pages.
    Please help me
    Engin

Leave the old domain file in the iWeb folder and use the following app to see if it will let you open that particular domain file.
To open your domain file in Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script"/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"
    delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
Due to Sandboxing by the operating system you may get a message that the app can't be opened because it's from an unregistered developer. In that case you can Control (right) - click on the app and select Open from the contextual menu OR create your own app from the code above using Applescript Editor.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible in Lion or Mt. Lion enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For Mavericks, 10.9 ,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
You only need to run the app once or if you want to open a different domain file.

  • Can't find firefox folder in application support

    Hi,
I'm trying to recover my passwords and bookmarks from an external hard disk. I use time machine and I am going to the latest back up. However, there is no firefox folder in the Library/ApplicationSupport folder. I can see 'mozilla' but there is nothing there. I had firefox on my computer, that's the browser I always use. Where can my firefox folder be? Or is there any other place can I get my passwords and bookmarks from in this case?
    Thank you,
    marta

Note that there may be two Library/ApplicationSupport folders.
You need the one in your user account (~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/) and not the one at the root level (/Library/Application Support/Mozilla/).
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show in Finder
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
In Mac OS X v10.7 and later, the ~/Library folder is a hidden folder.
    */Users/<user>/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<profile>/

Everytime I open Safari on my MacBook Pro a pop-up window from my Finder menu, with the Applications highlighted on the left in the favorites column with the Resources folder highlighted comes up and locks my Safari page until I manually close the Resources window then I have to refresh the internet search address line at the top of Safari. Can someone tell me how to stop this. It started after a software upgrade. It didn’t do that before. Thank you.

A few thoughts for diagnosis/testing purposes:
Have you recently run the disk utility and repaired HD and permissions? If not do so.
Boot into the Safe mode - hold down shift key on boot - and see if the problems are still there. Some functions won't work but see if anything odd happens.
Check your startup items. Get rid of them temporarily.
Create a new user account and see if the problems occur with the new account.
Lastly, be sure your backup is up-to-date.

Trying to clean up my iMac.  Noticed that while in finder, I click on Applications and in the list I see another folder called applications that is a duplicator of the original folder.  Is this truly a copy that can be deleted?

DO NOT remove either folder. DO NOT mess with any OS X system files either. If you have dupliocates check your files in iPhoto, iTunes and your iMovies libraries. Also check your data files, under ALL circumstances stay away from any OS X systems files or you will probably bork your Mac to the point it will not run.

  • Mac OS 10.6.8 Application folder in finder is missing the applications

All applications are on the harddrive but are missing from the applications folder in the finder. How do I repopulate the folder? Thank you for your help.

    Seventy one,
    Thank you.
I don't have Time Machine enabled. ( You would think I would give up on learning the hard way right? :-)   Is there another way to do what seems like creating an alias of the applications in the Home Folder? ( House icon)
Let me try to do better stating the problem.
Finder --> Home Folder --> Applications Folder  ( It is this folder that is void of applications.)  The Home Folder also contains Desktop , Documents, Downloads folder. all of which are fine.   The Applications Folder, which can be moved to the Doc is the folder that is empty of programs.
Finder ---> Applications -- Where Application is item marked  "A" under "Places" populates with all programs on Harddrive. No problem here.
    Thanks again,
    Curtis

I just updated to Lion. I cannot find my Library Folder in my User folder. I know the information is there as I can see printer profiles stored in there in an application, but I cannot find the folder. Could it have been moved during upgrade?

It is not missing, it is now hidden.  In Finder option-click Go in the menubar and it will appear under Home.

  • Hi, Need help. I am trying to download the latest iTunes for Windows application but on running the program it says that it can not be completed as it can not find the folder location of the file "iTunes.msi" . Any clues would be appreciated

Hi, Need help. I am trying to download the latest iTunes for Windows application but on running the program it says that it can not be completed as it can not find the folder location of the file "iTunes.msi" . Any clues would be appreciated

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

I have searched Finder, Trash and the applications folder but i can't find where it is kept.  I want to put the icon for Dashboard back in the dock - how can i do this?

The combo update may replace anything you have inadvertently deleted.
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
You can reapply it over the top of any previously downloaded version.  I see that your profile says 10.6.8.
Then software update to pick up any new security, iTunes updates.

  • Moving a folder in applications to external hard drive

Hello! So background story: I recently started moving all of my photos, music, and video library from my Macintosh HD to my external hard drive. I do have my Adobe CS4 suite installed on my Mac HD, and it is a folder inside 'Applications.'
    So here is my question...
If I simply drag-n-drop into my External HD, will it copy a) the applications and b) all of the, you know, 'background files' that keep it running and such, or will it just copy the applications and lose all of the other information that may be tagged along with it hidden somewhere else in the HDD?
I was a PC user back in the day, and I know this happened alot with Windows, where an application would have other hidden files attached to it somewhere...
    Thank you!

Moving applications off of the system drive is a bad idea.
Many will not run at all. Some will run but have problems.
The install to do updates will not be abloe to find applications that have been reloacted.
I strongly recommend against  moving the applications.
    Moving the data is fine.

  • Hi Everyone.  I have an old Mac Book.  I have saved a ton of emails in my inbox 'On My Mac'.  There are so many it is slowing down my computer.  Where do I find the folder with all the emails so I can cut and paste them to an external hard drive?Pls.help.

Hi Everyone.  I have an old Mac Book with software updated to 10.6.8.  I have saved a ton of emails in my inbox 'On My Mac'.  There are so many it is slowing down my computer.  Where do I find the folder with all the emails so I can cut and paste them to an external hard drive? Pls.help.  Tks.

Depending on which email client software you use
the files should be in 'your home folder' library, esp.
if you use Mail application.... ~/Library/Mail
Since you don't specify what mail application,
that would most be associated with the file.
I notice there are some items to the right of your post
where it says "more like this' so that may be worth a
look to see if similar issues were answered. Also, the
Help viewer in your system is a searchable database.
Seems that google also brings up fair information, too.
Do you have a complete bootable clone of your entire
Mac system on an externally enclosed hard disk drive?
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Do I need OS 9 System Folder and Applications?

I am running low on space and am looking at things to remove from my internal hard drive. Is there any risk to removing the OS 9 folders? I have a 200G external harddrive with lots of space. Is moving the folders there a better option than deleting them or does moving them cause problems also if I might need them in the future?
    Thanks,
    Sande
    powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   12 in

Hi, asinhk. The disk space you'd regain by deleting your OS 9 System Folder and Applications Folder is likely to be less, maybe far less, than one gigabyte. Check the sizes of those folders using the Finder's Get Info command to see how much space you're actually talking about.
If you have no need at all to run Classic applications — you never do so in your day-to-day work, and you have no old, stored documents that you'll ever need to access in Classic mode — then you can safely delete OS 9 and its applications. It would also be OK to transfer the two major OS 9-related folders to your external drive, if you do need to run Classic sometimes, and if you'll have the external drive connected to the Powerbook whenever you need to use Classic. If you do that, you'll need to re-specify the new location of the System Folder to use for Classic in the Classic pane of System Preferences.
But ultimately, if you are so pressed for hard drive space that removing OS 9 from your internal drive is going to make any significant difference, then you'll need a new, larger internal hard drive very soon even if you do delete OS 9. If you ever need to perform an Archive & Install of OS X, or you ever want to burn a DVD, you'll need at least 5GB of available space on your internal hard drive to do so. If you can't free up that much space on your HD right now without making agonizing choices about what to keep, you already need a bigger drive.
