Finder Trouble

Last Monday, my iMac Intel Core Duo 2.4GH (bought late 2007), with 4GB RAM, suffered a weird breakdown.   Here are the symptoms:
Finder seemed unable to generate thumbnails for documents and the like. Once you open a Finder window, the whole machine slows down to near halt (you could place a mouse click every three or four minutes). With all Finder windows closed, the computer runs faster, but still much slower than usual, with apps notably too slow to start — though it does sometimes work smoothly. Neither re-launching Finder nor restarting the computer solved the problem. I tried to reinstall OS 10.6, but the operation failed (error, install process could not be completed). Tried restore from time machine, but the machine would not reboot afterwards. In desperation, I wiped out the hard drive and did a clean install of 10.6, then ran software update (back to 10.6.7 and all) and then restored my documents and stuff piecemeal (no full restore).  That seemed to do the trick.  The device was back running again like new.
Then this morning, in about the same the problem happened last week, it happened again.  Checking the Console I found an awful lot of messages like this one
“18/04/11 13:20:08 kernel disk0s2: I/O error."
followed by something that
“18/04/11 13:31:58 quicklookd[243] [QL] 'Creating thumbnail - cancelled' timed out for '<QLThumbnailRequest /Users/hazemeseifen/Documents/METS/WSD101005.doc>' (Start date: 2011-04-18 13:31:38 +0200)”.
So I’m pretty sure it is the disk I/O error that is causing the problem.  Any idea?  And keep in mind that I did a fresh system reinstall just a few days ago.

Hi Eseifan,
     Two scenerios in play here:
The file is a corrupted or complex file. That Console error message means that QuickLook Daemon cannot create that shiny little thumbnail preview. This can happen if the file is corrupted, not what it says to be or contains something within it that QuickLook cannot handle - such as Macros or Webpage links that need you to download things.
The HDD is bad. This is more serious. Basically your HDD has a physical defect and needs you to visit your local Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorised Dealer and get it replaced. Seeing as you have a TM backup, you should be able to restore if it is indeed a HDD error.
Try running Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD and click Repair Disk Permissions. This may help. Then run Verify Disk. If an error is returned, insert the installtion disc, restart, launch Disk Utiltiy and click Macinosh HD > Repair Disk.

  • Hard drive/Finder trouble

I'm having trouble with my hard drives, it's happened several times during the last couple of days that the Finder becomes unresponsive, as if there's something it's unable to read. I can't get it to relaunch, and as the menu bar also disappears I have to hold down the power button to shut down the computer. When I turn it on again everything is fine for a few hours, then something goes wrong again. I've verified all hard drive partitions in the disk utility and they're ok. My impression is that it has to do with one of my external hard drives (a LaCie connected by firewire), it seems it won't wake up when the finder is trying to access it. Any ideas what to do?

Here's what the log says around the time of a freeze (I've left out a few clearly unrelated lines). The external hard drive in question is called 'Audio'. During the freeze I tried to force quit the Finder unsuccessfully. In the end I disconnected the hard drive, at which point everything unfroze.

  • Finder Troubles

I'm running OS X 10.4.11 on an iMac G5 2GHz with 512 MB DDR SDRAM.
What's happening is that the Finder seems to be resetting itself. The menu bar disappears, all of my icons on the desktop disappear, and then it all reappears. I rand Disk Utility on the disk and found a few problems, then repaired the disk, but it's still happening.
    Any ideas?

If you are running Stuffit, look for a preference in System Preferences called Stuffit AVR. Click on it, then on the AVR tab on the left, then click the stop button. Hopefully this will cure your problem.

  • Macbook desktop/finder trouble

Hi all, I have a white C2Duo 2.16ghz 2gb MacBook with 10.5.2 which was fine until recently it became almost impossible to drag/drop/open files & folders on the desktop, using the finder is also ridiculously slow - no updates were applied close to this happening so I can't point to that as the culprit.
Apps are fine launched from the dock but the fan is also cranking up at intervals
and the activity manager shows nothing serious except when the fans kick in I can see the finder is hogging over 100% cpu!
Tried resetting pram, fixing permissions and archiving and re-installing 10.5.1 -
which worked for about a day then symptoms resurfaced.
Has anyone got any ideas or had similar problems before I attempt a clean 10.5.1 install?
Do I need to do a hardware test?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi, thanks for the reply Yongwon - I previously did all that, moved all files off desktop to a DVD, still painfully slow! Thing is I've just tried logging in with a different account and it seems fine! although the fan is still whirring due to the other [admin] account. To make matters worse my bootcamp partition has gone awol while I was removing it [using bootcamp assistant] and my drive is now short the corresponding memory space [was 111gb - now 90g, minus the 20gb allocated for xp].
All I want to do now is erase the whole drive to reclaim the 'missing' xp partition and re-install OS X
but I'm not sure how to do this, can I do it by starting up from the leopard DVD or using firewire and target mode? The drive icon in DU shows the correct size - 111gb but the icon below shows the amount without the xp memory - 90gb!
I need more info before I start erasing stuff! So any comments would be greatly appreciated.

  • Macbook Finder Troubled after "Sleeping"

It seems that after I wake my computer from sleep, The system wakes and I first noticed that my Wallpaper is gone and second that I cannot use anything, no folders open, the hard drive neither. System does respond to the commands (command-n, etc).
After I restart, then everything reverts to normal: the wallpaper, the folders open on double-click. Etc.

  • Checking Posting Date in ABAP Program

    Dear All,
I am given a requirement to develop a program to create PO  without using Tcode ME21N.
I find trouble in validating posting date.
How to check that the entered date is the valid posting date or in which table i can get the values to check.
I tried the following FMs, but couldn't find the solution.
    ACEPS_OPEN_PERIOD_DETERMINE

  • Problems with the Oracle Pre-Load actions in an homogeneous system copy

    Hi,
I am trying to do a NW04 homogeneous system copy, and I am having troubles with the ABAP copy. (Oracle Pre-Load Actions step)
I am with the database specific procedure, so I am creating the new system until the sapinst asks me to bring an online-offline backup and the control file, then the sapinst tries to recover the database by himself, but he finds trouble:
Error: CJS-00084 SQL statement or script failed.<br>DIAGNOSIS: Error message: ORA-01194: file 1 needs more recovery to be consistent Ora-01110: data file 1: 'oracle/XIE...'
If I try to do the recover manually I have to make the usual:
    RECOVER DATABASE UNTIL CANCEL USING BACKUP CONTROLFILE;
    CANCEL
    ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS;
If I follow the sapinst.log I find that the sapinst tries to recover the database but fails with the above message and:
ORA-01589: must use RESETLOGS or NORESETLOGS option for database open
    Yes, that's true, if I make it manually I have to open the database with the 'alter database open resetlogs';
the problem could be fixed modifying the run_control.sql statement that the SAPINST creates at the working directory, but no modification to that statement is possible because the SAPINST deletes and creates the statement IMMEDIATELY before executing it, so what can I do?
    Many thanks
    Mario

    SOLVED
for your info, the run_control.sql is UNMODIFIABLE, but I could modify the CONTROL.SQL that he calls, so I recovered manually the Database, and the CONTROL.SQL was a simply CONNECT and then OPEN DATABASE, just like that, so I could continue with my installation, another point for us against the damned SAPINST !!!

  • MBP late 2007 what just happened?

I have a 2.66 late 2007 early 2008 model. I was burning a bunch of home videos on to dvd and it just shut off. Not two weeks ago I did an erase and install of 10.6.2 and all was great. Now When I turn it on after this incident I get the chime and then the apple logo. Then I get the circle with the line through it. I am guessing it is the hard drive. How do you know if it is the hard drive or the logic board that has failed? Is there a test to run? Can I use a usb drive with a bootable 10.6 image on it to tell one way or the other? I really appreciate the help!

looks like darwin cannot access the root files on the hard drive, whose directories may have been corrupted in the burning process (personally I won't install 10.6.x until at least release 4 or 5, after reading the reports on Ric's Ford Macintouch at http://www.macintouch.com).
IMHO, if the motherboard went kaput, you'll have no chime and no flashing Apple icon before it shows you the "no passage" sign.... but then I've been proved wrong before (grin).
A quick unix alternative to the Mac way iVmichael suggested would be to test mounting the drive in *single user* mode by holding down the S key while powering on. If you get a black screen with white blurb running down by itself, you're almost home run.
The white blurb would stop at something like:
    localhost:/ root#
Type right just after it (you may have a blinking dot or not at this stage)
/sbin/fsck -fy [note there is a space before -fy]
    and hit Return key.
You should see the low level fsck utility going about its business and checking file extents, directories, links, etc, which is extremely good news (these are the unix workings behind Apple's logo and spinning wheel at start up).
If the list is short you'll get a "The disk yourdrivename appears to be OK".
If fsck finds trouble, and it will surely find orphaned or invalid links and directory counts, etc., it will attempt to repair the problems and it will report a FILE SYSTEM MODIFIED ofter a successful repair (just follow the writing on the screen, it's kinda fun . At this point press the "up" arrow key on your keyboard, which tells the unix shell to repeat the operation, just to be on the safe side. Wait through it and if you get a short list ending as described above, type reboot or exit in SL.
If all went well, you should get your drive back after normal GUI boot up. You should run Disk Utility's Repair Permissions after a normal boot.
If not, then invest in DiskWarrior (http://www.alsoft.com) and / or TechTool Pro (http://www.micromat.com), as both come with MacOS X booting disks and try the revival from outside you mbp. TT Pro can run actual hardware & file system diagnostics on your mbp, even down to components.
    Good luck
I'm no UNIX head, but I find myself doing this routine almost every time I have to restart or do a cold boot.

  • How to findout the ViewObject result size in a jsff page?

    Hi
I am finding trouble to display the Viewobject result size on my jsff page. I have dragged a view object on to JSFF as Updatable ADF table. I would like to print the result size on top of the table. So any one have any idea how to acheive this?
    I got this.. Please ignore
*#{bindings.TestVO.estimatedRowCount} - This gives the fetched row count*
    Thanks in advance
    Edited by: user616296 on Feb 17, 2010 10:01 AM

    User,
    what is exactly your question?
#{bindings.TestVO.estimatedRowCount} should give you the total number of rows matching your query, not the fetched size.
Internally estimatedRowCount fires a select count(*) from (your query), so you should get the number your are looking for.

  • What is the next step after ABAP ? Need resources for SAP structure

    Hello,
I have learned ABAP and now it is time to use it to write SAP programs. But what is the next step?
From where can I get information about SAP tables to proceed?
I have 2 ABAP books but they only provide the syntax for ABAP. After learning that, I am finding trouble in knowing on which objects/tables to apply it on.
For example, I want to know that when I use the CV01n to create a file, what happens in terms of internal SAP tables?
If I select multiple files in the search result "CV04N" which table should I access to get these selected files?
Basically does anyone know where I can find such resources in order to understand how to proceed in developing SAP application ?
    Regards.

    Hi HASSAN,
For Learning the Business part of  ABAP, (That is what is missing for you i.e the tables and their relations), i would suggest you to take one module at a time.
Like MM(Material management) or SD(Sales and distribution) etc.
Refer this link to know the business part of the SAP:

  • Escaping characters with -- output method="html" --

    Hi all,
I am finding trouble with the
    <xsl:output method="html"/>
    comand.
I am passing a variable to an XSL which contains the session ID of my application. This session ID contains '%'s, and the XSL parser is escaping those characters to '%25' if I set the above command as said.
    <xsl:stylesheet...>
    <xsl:param name="paramX">#</xsl:param>
    </xsl:stylesheet>
Using <xsl:output method="xml"/> is not an option.
Is there any way to tell the parser not to escape a subset of the XSL????
    Thanks for your time,
    J. Arrai

The XSLT 1.0 specification requires processors to escape the values of URI attributes in HTML output mode.
See section 16.2 of the XSLT 1.0 spec.
"The html output method should escape non-ASCII characters in URI attribute values using the method recommended in Section B.2.1 of the HTML 4.0 Recommendation.

  • Cannot change date format in delimited output

    Hi,
I am launching a series of Reports from a Forms environment in pdf format without any problem.
However, we're finding trouble when setting the format to excel (desformat=delimiteddata in set_report_object_property). Date fields which include hour and minute are being truncated ('18/05/2007 12:10:00' to '18/05/2007'). This is a highly undesirable behavior and we would like to fix it.
We have been following online help and found out that dateformatmask parameter is the key to achieve this. We have included it in the report launch string that is used inside the web.show_document built. This is the way it looks:
    /rwservlet/getjobid2574?server=rep_cspas&mimetype=application/vnd.ms-excel&dateformatmask='DD/MM/RRRR HH24:MI:SS'
However, report date fields format keeps being wrong. Any clue about this?
    Thanks and regards,
    Fernando Gorostiza.

Thanks, but that's a kind of solution I had already thought of but which I wanted to avoid. We have over 60 reports, and although I can make one developer change every date field inside each of them, I believe it's quite a big waste of time considering the existence of dateformatmask parameter.
    Any other idea?

  • Transfer data with in a view

    Hi all,
I get some data from function module, they are not binary type and i want to display that table data in pdf. In my context, one node gets the data from model and another node(PDFObject) displays in a view. i.e. Those two nodes in same View Context!. Can any one help me.
    thanks
    Ravi

    Hi Ravi,
It seems that you are using Adobe Document services to display data in PDF.
You are getting values from the RFC by calling SAP R/3.
Here, you can use same model node available for RFC in PDF as Data source or you can transfer data from your model node in to value node and use this value node as Data source in PDF object.
I guess you are finding trouble in trasferring data from model node to value node, right?
If yes, then what you can do is, after fetching data in model node iterate through this model node in for loop. Inside this for loop, get values from model node, create element of value node and set corresponding values in this element.
Let me know if you are not looking for this or any other questions.
    Regards,
    Bhavik

Review the purchasing user guide for more detailed information on the open interface tables and detailed column description. Also, with the Diagnostic Tools Responsibility, under Purchasing there's a diagnostic for the documents open interface that will give you validation information.
