Finder updates icons and jumps to first desktop automatically!?

The Finder updates the desktop icons at irregular intervals automatically. I recognized it because they disappear for half a second.
If I also work on another desktop, then Mac jumps at this moment to the main desktop.
I use Mavericks. Thanks for your help!

  • Is it true icons and folders on your desktop get loaded into ram?

I had read on a post that leaving icons and folders on your desktop uses up Ram-memory. Is this true?

The file just takes up space in the Desktop folder on the hard drive unless it's a system element like a drive icon which resides in an invisible system component elsewhere on the hard drive. Applications typically store their custom icons in the application package itself. But regardless of where the icon is physically stored RAM is required to display the icon. So the size of the file represented by the icon is unrelated to the amount of RAM needed to display the icon. Most icons do not take up a lot of display memory. Once an icon is no longer being displayed but will be re-displayed shortly then the icon is cached on the hard drive so it can be reloaded quickly. The OS does this with everything stored in RAM if needed to free up RAM for another use. But this is not an icon thing. It has to do with memory management.

  • Can't find the icon Macintosh HD on my desktop, how do I get it back?

I just noticed that the Macintosh HD icon is missing from my desktop...have looked all over for it. Search just gives (path/) no path. Finder is working well, but in trying to resolve the situation I clicked on the arrow beside the list of hard drives in the left column in finder window and I lost the icon there. I know, very stupid!! Please help!

Go to Finder > Preferences > General tab > Check Hard disks.
    Regards
You can get it back into the sidebar in Finder > Preferences > Sidebar tab > Check Hard disks.

  • How can I find the icon I need among the desktop clutter?

OK, my desktop accumulates a lot of icons, and then it's hard to find the one I need.
I'd like to click on the file name in a window and make the icon obvious, like blink or highlight.
I haven't found anything as part of OSX or Finder, or on Google.
Maybe there's an application that can do this?

You should not clutter up your Desktop with icons!
Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.
And it is why Apple invented 'Stacks'.

  • How do I correct distored icons and print on eMac desktop?

How do I correct color distortion of icons and faded print on eMac desktop?

    Hi Dennis,
Is this Printing from an eMac Desktop computer, or the actual display coors on the Desktop of the eMac?
    If the Latter try this.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode).

  • I can't access the App Store icon. It opens but a large delta airlines app is superimposed over the top of the App Store updates icons and is locking the entire app. How do I delete it?

I can't access the App Store app. When I tap the Icon, a large Delta airlines app is superimposed over the top of everything and freezes up the entire App Store. how can delete this large app and where did it come from.

Quit the App Store app and reset your iPad.
Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app. Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • Where can I find more icons to associate with a desktop shortcut?

    Hi.
    Using FF 29.
I am using the Desk Cut add-on to create web shortcuts on my desktop.
When I click on Properties and the Change Icon button, there are only six choices to pick from.
Is there another path to more icons?
    It would make life easier.
    Thanks and cheers!

    Compumind
You would have to take that up with the developer. We can't make any changes to add-ons.

  • Custom native window icons and Jump List api for Windows?

    Hi,
can I add custom window icons for a Stage?
Skype did it for its "compact mode":
    http://cloud.addictivetips.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Compact-View.jpg
(there's a fourth icon in the title bar)
And can I modify the task bar entries (Jump List)? I am talking about this:

    http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/17/2012/01/medium_9122b374825de2a368e7560b83cc352d.jpg

can I add custom window icons for a Stage? Not in a Stage with StageStyle.DECORATED http://docs.oracle.com/javafx/2.0/api/javafx/stage/StageStyle.html#DECORATED
    Use StageStyle.UNDECORATED or StageStyle.TRANSPARENT
The JavaFX Sample application demonstrates custom icons in an UNDECORATED window when you run it as a standard application rather than as an applet. You download it's source from the same page you downloaded JavaFX from.
There is a Jira request which would assist in creating Windows which look a bit more like the Skype Window http://javafx-jira.kenai.com/browse/RT-20020 "support Aero Glass effects for top-level windows" - my guess is that this just refers to the Glass background and not the icons embedded in the titlebar, though a combination of the Glass Background and StageStyle.UNDECORATED would allow you to create your own icons which look similar to the standard Windows Aero ones and create an look almost exactly like the Skype one.
For further integrations like the JumpList, JavaFX does not support that out of the box today.
You can create a feature request in jira if you want.
There are third party libraries which provide this support for Java - and they should work with JavaFX as JavaFX is just Java.
Here is a link to a third party library to create a Windows 7 JumpList: http://www.strixcode.com/j7goodies/
