Finder Using 80% CPU

Hi.
I have a MacBook Pro 2.4gHz and according to activity monitor, Finder is using 60-80% of the processing. I see no slow downs in performance, but its weird. Its not all the time, and if I run "killall Finder" in terminal, it seems to fix the problem.
Does anyone else have the same problem, or know what could be causing this?
Thanks,
Rob

I can report similar problems, but in my case it slow down the rest of the computer. I really want to understand what happening, if anyone know?

  • Finder using 90% cpu for no reason?

Not sure why. Not using quicklook, Not using cover flow. Just staring at my files.

Figured it out. Turns out if "Show item info" is enabled for the desktop it will cause Finder to bug out at 100% CPU for some reason. I removed everything on my desktop except a few things (Macintosh HD, No Name volume for FAT32, 2 folders, and an application shortcut)...
This was found when I was googling the issue and a guy had a similar issue in os x 10.3 ... due to an inability for it to query the file.
at least it's fixed.. though not sure which folder caused the issues.
    Thanks guys.

  • Finder using all cpu power

my iMac goes to cpu 100% utilisation when I open a new finder window. Why?
    iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2009
osx 10.8.5 (although the problem has been with me now for quite a while)
The system appears to grind to a halt for 1 - 2 mins.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Discoveryd process uses 100% CPU - Safari Can't find the server

    Hello
Since upgrading to Yosemite, I lose connection to the internet 2 or 3 times a day. (Outlook goes offline at the same time)
This is with a wired connection. (Wi-Fi is turned off)
Safari gives me the "Safari Can't Find the Server" message.
Restarting the computer solves the issue temporarily.
While I'm unable to connect to the internet, Activity Monitor shows a process named "discoveryd" that uses 100% CPU.
Force quitting this process gives me back access to the internet instantly. Unfortunately, I suffered a kernel panic (auto restart) a few minutes after force quitting discoveryd. I'm not 100% sure those 2 are related but it would be an odd coincidence as I never experienced had a single kernel on that system. Haven't tried force quitting that process since.
I'm using this iMac in a work environment. (Connected to a windows file server and exchange)
This issue has been happening 2-3 times a day since the day I upgraded to Yosemite.
Any pointers on what could fix this issue ?
    Thanks

  • Finder and loginwindow use 100% cpu with 10.6.8

I recently installed the patch to OS X 10.6.8 and now the finder is very unstable and uses 100% cpu and the loginwindow uses 100% cpu also.  Yes I have Parallels 6 on this machine but I already "un-checked" the "show windows applications in doc" option which is the recommended solution.  However, this did not fix the problem.  I do not know how to determine what actual process is causing this finder / loginwindow issue.  I very much appreciate if anyone has suggestion how to fix this problem.
This is on a mid-2011 MacBookPro.
    thank you.

TBauer, I had the same problem with 10.6.8 using 100% of the CPU with Parallels 6 installed.  The following steps solved this problem for me:
    0.  Take a screen shot of your Dock if you wish to remember it as currently set
    1. Launch Activity Monitor and click on the CPU column so you can see Dock using the CPU
    2.  Move   ///Users/ ...  /Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist to the trash
    3.  Click on Dock and click on Quit Process to stop the Dock
OS X will then rebuild the default Dock
    4.  Put the items back in the Dock that you want
That solved the problem for me yesterday morning.  I've launched Parallels 6 several times now and moved the machine from my work network to home and the 100% CPU problem hasn't returned.
Hope that works for you, too!
I don't think using the combo updater will solve the problem.  The problem appears to be a .plist that is generated with OS X 10.6.7 and earlier that contains icons of a larger than Apple documented size causes the CPU looping.  Rebuilding the dock.plist under OS X 10.6.8 appears to solve the problem.
Parallels has issued a knowledge bulletin saying they are looking into the problem.  On their web site they have another approach involving moving the offending icon out of the dock to solve the problem.  I like my solution better but theirs works, too.

  • All programs using 100% CPU, freezing, crashing, -10810, -600, and -1712 errors

Okay, so. I have a Macbook Pro from December 2012, a little over a year old.
    Version 10.9.1, running Mavericks
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 8 GB
    Startup Disk - Macintosh HD
I can send more info if I need to. I'm a graphic designer using Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign usually simultaneously, as well as Spotify, Messages, Sparrow (mail), Stickies, Tweetdeck, and Evernote. I also use a wireless mouse, drawing tablet, and second screen. This has never been a problem (I mean, my old computer had 4 GB memory and handled these programs just fine, except for Final Cut Pro 7) up until recently.
For the last two months, my computer has been seriously out of whack.
I'm constantly having to refresh finder
Every time I open Google Chrome, all of my extentions crash immediately and any website I try to go to is extremely sluggish (but Safari works)
    The dock freezes
    Constant error messages: 1712, 10810, 600
    Audio fails randomly
Overall, the problem seems to be that I can't do more than one thing at a time -- I can't take a screenshot if more than two programs are open, I can't open DMG files, I can't open Spotify if any Creative Suite program is open. I've been watching the activity monitor, and it seems like each program is trying to use 100% CPU, which doesn't seem right. I have to close every program to work in Photoshop, which makes me miss calls and emails.
I've tried restarting in safe mode, verifiyng the disk and repairing permissions, I used time capsule to restore to a time before it was happening, and restored my user profile in Chrome. I'm at my complete wit's end trying to figure this out! I feel like my next step is to just reinstall my OS completely, but that would be a major setback for getting my work done, and I'm not even sure that would work.
I've looked on other forums and it seems like the Mail app typically causes problems, but I don't even use it, I use Sparrow.
    PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP

    Launch error -10810 in Mavericks
I have the same issue since a couple of days. Nothing that I found in the community (rebuilding launch info using Onyx or manually deleting the apple.com-launch prefs) has helped me so far. Only some apps are affected (PasswordWallet 4.7.4 among them).
I can launch it once and it will run fine as long as it’s open. Next time it refuses to open displaying the error -10810 message instead. I trash the app and use a fresh one off the vendor’s dmg file I downloaded and the sequence repeats.

  • Finder taking up CPU after system restore!

I recently had to restore my computer from a previous image in time machine...
Now, I am finding that the CPU is working over time and the laptop is hot. When I check in Activity Monitor it says Finder is using 103.1 of the CPU! It seems to be when I have Word open etc. Word in Activity is not using much CPU at all, but Finder's use is high. When I close Word or Powerpoint etc, suddenly Finder's CPU usage drops to 3 or something similar.
What's going on? I've restarted, and relaunched finder etc... nothing seems to stop it when a program is open.

  • Firefox keeps freezing and using 50% cpu and memory usage shoots up most of the time it's when there's an auto update of anything addon, plugin or ff!

Firefox keeps freezing and using 50% cpu and memory usage shoots up real fast and carries on going till it uses up all there is left. Most of the time it's when there's an auto update of anything addon, plugin or ff but not just neccessarily then! I find out it's happened when there's been an update after i restart and an extra webpage comes up with the particular addon/plugin/ff update. I have to restart most of time because nothing sorts it out. I'm using windows xp with the latest update of ff 13.0.1 it's not this version because it's been happening for a while. And it never started when i added a particular addon or plugin or when i added a new app to my pc either. Any idea as to what this may be or how i'd sort it out?
    Cheers

Maybe disable hardware acceleration? This article should help: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-uses-too-much-memory-ram

  • Using both CPU cores on Zynq?

    Hi,
Has anyone tried to use both cpu cores of zynq?
I did not find any example from Xilinx, only related information
in "Zynq-7000 EPP Technical Reference Manual UG585 (v1.2)".
It says that cpu0 must do these two things:
    1. Write the address of the application for CPU1 to 0xFFFFFFF0.
    2. Execute the SEV instruction to cause CPU1 to wake up and
    jump to the application.
Found a "dual cpu demo" example on ARM web-site:
    http://www.arm.com/files/pdf/ZC702_DS5_2.pdf
However, the attached source code doesn't do any of the
above two actions. How can the second cpu start then?
    Regards,
    Pramod Ranade

Thank you j, for the suggestions.
I was basically trying with baremetal/baremetal.
First I used "hello world" example for CPU0, it
works fine. Then I added another "hello world",
but now for CPU1. Then I edited it's main() and
removed the initialization part and also the
printf("hello world"). Instead, I simply declare
a pointer to some memory location. And in an
infinite loop, I keep incrementing the value
    pointed by that pointer.
The "hello world0" on the other hand has been
modified to write start address of the "hello world1"
to location 0xFFFFFFF0 and then a simple "SEV".
Then the program reads the same memory
location (which is being incremented by CPU1)
and prints it's value to UART. I was expecting that
the value will be seen increasing...but I see it
    constant.
For the shared memory location, I tried 0x00700000
which is in DDR RAM. I also tried 0xFFFFE000 which
    is in OCM. Neither worked...
I suspect, CPU0 needs to something more than just
writing CPU1 start address to 0xFFFFFFF0 and then
issuing a SEV. But I could not find any more information.
Nor can I find any example that uses both CPU cores.
    Regards,
    Pramod Ranade

  • I upgraded to iTunes 10.5 on XP and now it and applemobiledeviceservice.exe use 100% CPU. How do I fix this?

I upgraded to iTunes 10.5 on XP and now it and applemobiledeviceservice.exe use 100% CPU. How do I fix this?

When I called Apple Support to ask about the 100%  CPU usage, they wanted to charge me because my Ipod was out of warranty.  I insisted on talking to someone and finally got to talk to a software engineer for free.  He said that he had never heard of the problem in his three years at Apple.  Nonetheless, he sounded really interested and suggested that it might be a conflict with anti-virus software.   I deleted the antiviruse and that DID NOT HELP AT ALL.
It seems as if Apple could care less.    There is no official response.   Their primary response is to look at the Forum.   At least you find out that the problem isn't your fault, it really is Apple!!!!
So far the best solution is just to delete iTunes and use Mediamonkey to sync your pod.
    Apple, please fix this!!!!!

  • Internet browsing uses 100% cpu

    Hello everybody.
This situation has driven me crazy the last 4 months and till now i have not figure it out.
Everytime i have a video streaming in my computer, CPU usage goes to 100%. It happens every time, either using internet explorer or Firefox or Google chrome. Even when i have a skype video call or a gtalk video call. Some description of each one:
Using internet explorer: While i am watching a youtube video, CPU limits up to 100% after 1 minute or sometime 5 minutes. I am not able to watch a 15min video. Internet explorer process uses 100%CPU. When i kill it via task manager, another instance of IE
appears with the same CPU usage. I also kill it and then 4 or 5 instances of rundll32.exe appear consuming 100CPU. If i kill them, explorer.exe uses 100% of cpu. If i do nothing and just wait, CPU is 100% for two hours. If i just kill only IE instances, taskmngr.exe
is consuming 40-50% of CPU for 1-2 minutes, then other processes like conhost or csrss consumes the same amount of CPU and after 4-5 minutes everything comes back to normal. That's the story everytime i use IE 11.0.9600.16518
Using Firefox: While video streaming, flash player process consumes all CPU. When i kill it, the same behaviour described above occurs.
Using Google Chrome: When i run it, 5-6 instances of google chrome appear in task manager and after some time this browser also hungs with 100CPU.
All above are also happening while i run Skype either i have a video call or just text messaging. Sometimes svchost is 25-30 % and system hungs.
Operating system is Windows 7 home premium 64bit with SP1, my graphics card is NVidia Gforce GT 230M (latest drivers 20% when these situations occur, my system is extremely slow and whatever i do, it limits up CPU usage.
Any assistance is acceptable.  Thanks for the patience.

    Hi,
First, I would suggest that you reduce the hardware acceleration on the computer and check if it helps.
    a. Open Screen Resolution by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, and then, under Appearance and Personalization, clicking Adjust screen resolution.
    b. Click Advanced Settings, click the Troubleshoot tab, and then click Change settings.
    c. Note that some video card drivers do not permit you to change settings.
    d. Move the Hardware acceleration slider toward None to reduce or turn off video hardware acceleration.
This issue can be caused by confliction from one of the background programs or add-ons.
You may use Process explorer as Milos mentioned to find the root cause to fix the issue:
    Process explorer:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
You can follow the references below to troubleshoot the issue:
    1. 3RD part app: Remove to check the issue
    2. Drivers: Update or install compatible version
    3. System process/service: Upload the log file for analyzing.
I also would like to suggest you use Windows Performance Recorder to check the issue:

To diagnose HDD and RAM,  I would like to suggest you contact your computer vender.
    Hope it helps.

  • Audio Problem: When reproducing something "System" uses too CPU

    Hi everybody,
I have a problem, as I writed in the title when I reproduce a video, a song, any sound, in the task manager I notice that the process "System" uses too cpu. I had this problem since the last sunday, but I didn't nothing! Saturday evening I hybernate my pc as usual. The next day I turned on the pc and I noticed the problem.
After I noticed this problem I did an antivirus scan(a light one)(I use avast! antivirus) but it didn't find any virus, I tried to update Realtek drivers and the others, but nothing changed. I post here my pc model and everything you need.
    PC: Notebook HP G62 - 165 SL
    Operating system: Windows 7
Here I post the task manager screen.[Click HERE]
If you need further informations ask me for them.
    Sorry for my bad english

Let me know if it helps or not. I'll keep an eye out for your reply.

  • FIFO read that doesn't use 100% CPU

The FIFO read looks like an event based node (like a dequeue or wait on occurance) and I think there's a lot of people that assume it's going to use minimal cpu resources while it is waiting for data. I'm wondering if we can have an option that behaved like that. For example, could we have fixed sized FIFO read where the FPGA could trigger an interupt to let the RT side know the data is ready?

    Hey igagne,
I think this is a good idea. I get that timeouts implemented with polling are exactly the right thing for some applications, and quite problematic for others. I think having an option would also make the behavior more obvious to the user, which is a good thing. That being said, we do have a few programming practices that we recommend that can help if the polling behavior is not suitable for your application. Have you been able to find a solution that's suitable for your application? What hardware are you using?
Along the lines of potential workarounds, I think you'll be interested in this knowledge base, http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/583DDFF1829F51C1862575AA007AC792. A couple things I'd highlight, firstly some hardware does already work in the way you've described. Secondly, we generally recommend the example code shown at the bottom of the KB. In this way, your code has control over the polling rate and the tradeoff between a low latency response to data being available and consuming resources on the system. If you wanted an interrupt based solution to reduce time spent polling, it'd be possible to also add a wait on irq node and raise the irq from the FPGA when the data has been written. I'd still recommend polling for data after recieving the IRQ on the host because it's not generally guaranteed that the IRQ will arrive after all the data has made it's way to the host buffer, but it should be a much shorter poll.
    Thanks,
    Sebastian
