Finder using 90% cpu for no reason?

Not sure why. Not using quicklook, Not using cover flow. Just staring at my files.

Figured it out. Turns out if "Show item info" is enabled for the desktop it will cause Finder to bug out at 100% CPU for some reason. I removed everything on my desktop except a few things (Macintosh HD, No Name volume for FAT32, 2 folders, and an application shortcut)...
This was found when I was googling the issue and a guy had a similar issue in os x 10.3 ... due to an inability for it to query the file.
at least it's fixed.. though not sure which folder caused the issues.
Thanks guys.

  • Doc2text process using 100% cpu for way too long

I've run into this issue before, and have never received a satisfactory resolution.
When we publish certain PDF documents via collab to the KD, the doc2text process on our portal servers (also our API servers) spin up to 100% CPU for about 90 seconds. This causes the publish from collab to fail, so we resort to directly uploading the file to the KD via content upload.
    1) Why is doc2text running on our portal servers in the first place? Is this a result of the portal server or api service? If i move the API service off to another machine, will that remove this CPU hog from our front end servers?
    2) Has anyone seen this before, or found a way around it? Is there a newer version of doc2text in 10gR3 that isn't so terrible?
I'm preparing to move to 1-cpu virtuals in our new environment so any process that takes up 100% of the CPU is going to kill performance.

Doc2text is native search client functionality used by portal, automation, ws, collab, publisher, etc. The portal components use it when indexing content to search server. It is installed seperately with each portal component. If you have multiple portal components installed on the same box, the ones that use Doc2text will share it from the common folder where it is located. Doc2text uses different libraries for the purpose of raw text extraction and processing, the processed information being sent in a proprietary format to the search server.
Doc2text is a processor heavy component as it needs to execute intensives tasks necessary to parse and extract raw data from such file formats as Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat. Some files may be more complex to extract data from and take longer for this task to complete.
The best way to increase performance would be to install the various portal components onto their own machines. For example not installing portal and automation on seperate servers. This way when you run a crawler job that imports files, the running of doc2text will not use cpu cycles on the portal web server.

  • 10.5.2 Uses 100% CPU for about 10 mins

Everything was fine on 10.5.1 but 10.5.2 on Windows 7 32bit seems to use 100% CPU (iTunes.exe) for about 10 mins before settling down. I was just about to post 100% CPU when I saw it was back to normal so I closed and reopened it and the same thing has happened. PC has been restarted since it was installed.
Any idea what is causing this? Can I downgrade - if so, how?
PS: it's actually using 100% of one core.

Check out this Apple article -> iTunes 10.5 for Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
If you have one of the LSPs mentioned, you may have to do a winsock reset or remove the conflicting software.

  • RMAN parameters - to use more CPU for Backup & Restore

    Hi Friends,
I am using RMAN backup on 11g database on windows.
RMAN is taking almost 1 hr to restore the database and i could see the CPU usage is very less - less than 10% during restore.
so how can i make the RMAN backup and restore faster by using more CPU on windows.

Even better, check the wait events in your database and you'll know why the backup / restore is not as expected.

  • Perl overloading CPU for no reason

Very frequently my iMac's fan will start running very hard and loud when I'm not doing anything to require it. In Activity Monitor the process "perl" is shown using up to 70% or 80% of my CPU capacity. If I select perl and quit it the CPU usage (and the fan noise) stops, and perl doesn't appear to restart unless I restart the computer.
I understand (barely) that perl is some kind of meta-programming language on which other applications may depend (?), so my question is this: Is quitting perl going to impair my system in any way? (It hasn't caused any obvious problems that I can see.) Also, if I really don't need it, is there a way to prevent it from starting up when I launch OSX 10.4?

Look at the launchd entries in these directories for one that mentions perl:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    /System/Library/LaunchAgents
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
... launchd starts the processes it executes based on the XML plist files in those directories. The only wrinkle in that is that the launchd plist file calls a script that uses perl to run it.
Best to leave perl running, then do (in Terminal.app):
    *launchctl list*
... and see which label matches the PID given in Activity Monitor. The one with the same ID is the launchd item that started perl.

  • Finder using all cpu power

my iMac goes to cpu 100% utilisation when I open a new finder window. Why?
    iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2009
osx 10.8.5 (although the problem has been with me now for quite a while)
The system appears to grind to a halt for 1 - 2 mins.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • I live in Italy but like to use UK iTunes ( for obvious reasons)

I live in Italy and have an italian credit card, but I like to use the uk iTunes store ( I have been using £ iTunes vouchers up to now) I want to use iTunes match, but can't use italian credit card,  and now, because I have a £ credit balance, iTunes won't allow me to change country help !!
    Merry christmas

can any one give me a good reason why I have to be resident in one country in these global village days?
"The first thing to keep in mind is that the iTunes Store is not an open international marketplace. Each country effectively has its own iTunes Store, and not all content is available in all countries. In fact, even the iTunes Store itself is not available in every country. You can choose which country’s store you want to view by scrolling down to the bottom of the iTunes Store window and clicking the small round flag icon which appears in the bottom-right corner. This will bring you to a list of countries in which the iTunes Store is available, and you can change which country is displayed simply by clicking on the appropriate icon."
"Although you can browse the iTunes Store in any country without being signed in, you can only purchase content from the iTunes Store for your own country. This is enforced via the billing address associated with your credit card or other payment method that you use with the iTunes Store, rather than your actual geographic location."

  • Finder Using 80% CPU

    Hi.
I have a MacBook Pro 2.4gHz and according to activity monitor, Finder is using 60-80% of the processing. I see no slow downs in performance, but its weird. Its not all the time, and if I run "killall Finder" in terminal, it seems to fix the problem.
Does anyone else have the same problem, or know what could be causing this?
    Thanks,
    Rob

I can report similar problems, but in my case it slow down the rest of the computer. I really want to understand what happening, if anyone know?

  • Poor audio quality - iTunes uses 100% CPU for 15-20 seconds

About 6-7 seconds into an MP3, iTunes pegs my CPU to 100%, and the audio lags or shuts off completely. Protected AAC files play without issue. Converting the MP3 to AAC does not help: the audio and CPU give the same results. Winamp, WMP, and *even QuickTime* can play the same MP3 files without issue. It is only MP3s and only iTunes. I have uninstalled my antivirus, but that did not help. I removed all start up applications and closed any program that wasn't essential to the computer's operation. I have even killed non-essential processes. These files have played in in iTunes previously, it has only been in the last few months that I have had a problem. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version of iTunes just this morning. Nothing has helped, and I'm not about to reformat my PC just to see if that will help when these files play just fine in all my other media players.
    So, to recap:
    - Problem is ONLY with MP3s -> M4Ps play fine
    - Problem is ONLY iTunes -> Quicktime, Windows Media Player, and WinAmp play the MP3 just fine
    Ideas?

I have no idea what is causing this, but iTunes is rather sensitive to ID3 tag versions - the usual symptom is that it will not play the file.
As an experiment try selecting an MP3 track, then right click and select convert ID3 tags. Convert to "None".
I would do this on a copy of the file.

  • ICal in Leopard uses max CPU and must be force-quit

I'm having a problem with iCal 3.0 in Leopard. When left running, eventually it will start to use my entire CPU for no reason. I have tried wiping out all of its preference files, and deleted all my "subscribed" calendars (in case it was maybe stuck trying to update one), but it's still acting up. Interestingly, when it goes into this CPU hogging seizure, if I try to quit it normally at that time, the program will quit, but then immediately relaunches itself as "hidden" -- as if it needed to remain open to finish some kind of indexing or something. I find I need to then force quit it twice before it will stay closed and quit being a nuisance.
    Something is definitely broken here.
On the other hand, at least the dock icon for it (appears to) always display the correct date now. Although I apparently can't leave iCal running anymore (unless I want to listen to my fan going full blast all day), I'm glad it no longer needs to actually be launched to realize it isn't July 17 every day of the year.
I've seen a few similar reports from other users. Has anyone found a workaround for this yet?

I did some more testing yesterday. I created a new user, launched iCal, played around with it a bit, and left it open for awhile. It never maxed out the CPU or became unresponsive, and appears to be working perfectly with a fresh set of calendars.
As I mentioned in my first post, I had already deleted all of the preference and .plist files in my regular user account, and that did not fix the problem. I have now concluded that there must be something "corrupt" in one of my calendar files (I don't think they are actually corrupt though; my guess is that iCal 3 just has some kind of bug that only occurs with some certain type of legacy data). If I could, I would simply delete those and start fresh, but I have far too much valuable information in there to do that. Unfortunately, it is not possible to export individual events; all I can do is backup and restore entire calendars. I tried that, and the problem continues, so I am at a loss as to how I can solve this without destroying several years worth of data.
As I am not willing to lose all of my old data, I guess I will just have to wait until this nasty bug in iCal 3 gets fixed.

  • PMSET Uses 50% CPU Keeping Fan Running

I am having the same problem as described in this (archived) thread (no solution):
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11226077&#11226077
The only thing that appears to 'fix' pmset (at least for a while) is a reboot. This is not a permanent fix since, as time goes by, pmset eventually starts kicking up a fuss and using 50% cpu for regular periods of time--enough to keep the fan running pretty good.
Also, it appears that if the machine goes to sleep/hibernates the pmset issue raises its ugly head sooner.
If I'm running on battery, this seriously impacts battery life; which is rather ironic (not to mention frustrating) since pmset is supposed to be properly performing "power management".
I did try resetting the SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) at one point, but alas there was no lasting remedy.

For some reason, it occurred to me that I should try disabling bluetooth, which I did shortly after posting this issue. I have not seen abnormal pmset behaviour since then.
Since I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse this would not be an ideal setup for me to run with at all times.
    Any ideas out there folks?

  • Why use cursor and for loop?

    Hi All
So in general why would we use a cursor and a for loop to do update in a stored procedure?
Why wouldnt we just use a single update statement ?
is there compelling reason for using a cursor and a for loop: I am reading some code from a co-worker that the business logic for the select (set need to be updated) is complex but the update logic is simple (just set a flag to (0 or 1 or 2 or 3 or 4).
But eventually the select come down to a key (row_id) so I re-write it using just a single sql statement.
The size of the main table is about 2.6 to 3million rows
    Any thoughts on that??
The code below I just do a google for cursor for update example in case for something to play with
    -Thanks for all your input
    create table f (a number, b varchar2(10));

    Adding my sixpence...
PL/SQL is not that different from a SQL perspective than any other SQL client language like Java or C# or C/C++. PL/SQL simply integrates the 2 languages a heck of a lot better and far more transparent than the others. But make no mistake in that PL/SQL is also a "client" language from a SQL perspective. The (internal) calls PL/SQL make to the SQL engine, are the same (driver) calls made to the SQL engine when using Java and C and the others.
So why a cursor and loops in PL/SQL? For the same reason you have cursors and loops in all these other SQL client languages. There are the occasion that you need to pull data from the SQL engine into the local language to perform some very funky and complex processing that is not possible using the SQL language.
The danger is using client cursor loop processing as the norm - always pulling rows into the client language and crunching it there. This is not very performant. And pretty much impossible to scale. Developers in this case views the SQL language as a mere I/O interface for reading and writing rows. As they would use the standard file I/O read() and write() interface calls.
Nothing could be further from the truth. SQL is a very advance and sophisticated data processing language. And it will always be faster than having to pull rows to a client language and process them there. However, SQL is not Turing complete. It is not the procedural type language that most other languages we use, are. For that reason there are things that we cannot do in SQL. And that should be the only reason for using the client language, like PL/SQL or the others, to perform row crunching using a client cursor loop.

  • I just noticed that I can no longer select photos out of my finder that are located in my Aperture/Iphoto Library.  I used to be able to attach photos to my gmail out of the aperture library in the finder and for some reason, no longer can.

I just noticed that I can no longer select photos out of my finder that are located in my Aperture/Iphoto Library.  I used to be able to attach photos to my gmail out of the aperture library in the finder and for some reason, no longer can.
I can't access these images except to go into the applications.
Also, I'd like to import my iphoto library into aperture, and move aperture library to an external drive.  I tried the import first, but there wasn't enough space.  Then I tried copying over the aperture library onto the external drive but it failed bc it said file was in use.
As it is, I only have 50gb left on my imac, and the aperture library is 150gb.  Also, I have over 10k images in both libraries combined and there are tons of duplicates that need to be sorted, and hopefully not messed up because I've organized most of them.
So in short, I need to know how to do the following:
-select photos in finder in aperture/iphoto libraries
-move aperture library to live on external drive
-import iphoto library into aperture library
    -eliminate dups but maintain organization
-moving forward i need a better workflow so that I import images from camera, and can organize right away into albums rather than creating projects by default and then creating albums so essentially the photos are in 2 different places, even tho they are referenced
    -live happily ever after
Thanks in advance for any support you can offer!!

If you're using apps like iPhoto or Aperture then they replace the Finder for managing your photos. The point is that you use the (many) options available via these apps for the things you want and need to do with the Photos.
So, simply, you don't select the photos in the Finder. I'll append the supported ways to do this - which are faster and will yield the current version of your Photos - to the end of this post.
-move aperture library to live on external drive
Managed or Referenced Library? Managed -
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit Aperture
    2. Copy the Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching Aperture. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Referenced -  relocate your Masters first.
These issues are covered in the Manual and on this forum hundreds of times.
-import iphoto library into aperture library
FIle -> Import -> iPhoto Library? Have you done this already? If so are you trying to move the Masters to Aperture from an  iPhoto Library? Or Consolidate them?
-moving forward i need a better workflow so that I import images from camera, and can organize right away into albums rather than creating projects by default and then creating albums so essentially the photos are in 2 different places, even tho they are referenced
You can't. Every photo is in a Project.  They’re the basic building blocks of the Library.
You might want to spend a little time with the manual or the video tutorials. I'm not sure you've grasped the app  you've purchased.
The following is written for iPhoto, but about 97% works for Aperture too.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto/ APerture:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics. This is what you use to attach your shot to your GMail
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto/ Aperture.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto/ Aperture not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
