Finder using all of my available RAM

Right after a fresh install of Mac OS X Server on the Mac Mini, my Finder already had this problem. It was fine at first, but if I left it open for a while, it would chew up all of my RAM in about 2 days. I installed every software update after that, and the problem is not fixed. It used 3 GB yesterday because I accidentally left it open. Currently, I've been leaving it closed and using AFP to move files. Is this a common issue with a fix?
P.S. I'm not going to reinstall the OS. Finder isn't worth enough for me to do that again, especially because the Mini does not have a DVD drive.

When you say "left it open" are you referring to a finder window?  Closing the window does not close finder.
Make sure you have ample freespace on your hard drive
running permission checks and hard drive tests (using Disk Utility) might help.
You can also put the system in target disk mode and boot off of it from another machine, in case there is some hardware issue.  this will rule most things out except the hard drive.
I also use onyx and other utilities found at http://www.titanium.free.fr/ to help clean up caches and tweaks to osx.  use at your own risk.
if this has not resolved the problem, then you may be a victim of a corrupt spotlight index.
I had an issue not quite like this but close enough to offer as a possible solution.
Here's how you fix a corrupt spotlight index:
1. Open system preferences
2. open spotlight (top right)
3. click on privacy tab
4. click and drag your hard drive into the window (if you have more than one, perform this one at a time.)
you will leave this in here for at least 10 minutes.  no less. (seems hokey but osx does stuff behind the      scene ie removing existing index)
after your 10 mins at least is up, go back in and remove your HD from the privacy tab, and osx should start rebuilding a new index.
repeat for any additional drives you may have.  I would also close out of system preferences while you are waiting your 10 minutes.

  • Using all 32 GB of RAM?

    Hello!
A friend of mine has bought a dual 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Mac Pro and expanded it to 32 GB of RAM.
Whatever the reason: After a few days of work he has to reboot the machine because all memory being used and frequent activity on the HDD. My point was that it´s good that Mac OS 10.5.8 uses all available RAM, but he says he has to restart the machine because of some 2 MB large disk writes/reads every now and then. Any thought about what´s happening? Is this normal after a few days of work?
    Regards

I remember reading something on the Developer site after I got my 2008 Mac Pro that the Buffered ram actually slows down the mac based on the configuration of the ram, ram type, make, mix and matching different sized pairs, ect. If I remember right, VRam doesn't used the physical ram, it uses the Hard Drive in a hidden folder named Temp. Did he do a PRam reset recently?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/26871.html
PRam stores many settings and after a wile it needs to be reset so that the old settings can be replaced.
Its been my experience that after a lot of hours of video work, and other terrible things I do to this mac, the PRam needs to be reset and I force the periodic daily weekly monthly scripts to run in terminal. I also periodically unplug it to reset the power management. I ran Parallels for a little bit but I didn't like how it allocated memory and CPU usage. I switched to VMware and my Macs been happier.

  • Linux 64-bit cannot use all of my 4GiB RAM.

Well, please forgive my nooby-ness but here is my problem:
Long ago I heard that 32-bit system cannot use 4GiB or more of RAM unless we turn on PAE option in kernel and 64-bit system can avoid this. So I installed 64-bit linux since I planned to upgrade my box to 4GiB Ram in the future. But somehow linux refuse to recognize all of my 4GiB Ram. I can only get 3.7GiB when run cat /proc/meminfo
    [pntruongan@myhost ~]$ cat /proc/meminfo
    MemTotal: 3720600 kB
    MemFree: 2406720 kB
    Buffers: 85732 kB
    Cached: 588172 kB
    SwapCached: 0 kB
Given that intergrated VGA took away roughly 256MiB of Ram then if I do the math right, I still have 3932160 kB left. Where is the rest?

See how BIOS report memory (e820 messages on dmesg)
Example in my system with 4GiB of RAM
    BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009f000 (usable)
    BIOS-e820: 000000000009f000 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved)
    BIOS-e820: 00000000000f0000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved)

    BIOS-e820: 00000000dfee3000 - 00000000dfef0000 (ACPI data)
    BIOS-e820: 00000000dfef0000 - 00000000dff00000 (reserved)
    BIOS-e820: 00000000f0000000 - 00000000f4000000 (reserved)
    BIOS-e820: 00000000fec00000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved)
BIOS-e820: 0000000100000000 - 0000000120000000 (usable) <- Remapped memory above 4GiB via AMD DRAM Controller DCT (internally called "memory hoisting")
Only "usable" areas are used as "memory"
Sometimes, these usables areas are set to reserved by kernel:
e820 update range: 0000000000000000 - 0000000000010000 (usable) ==> (reserved) <- First 64KiB marked as reserved to avoid unwanted memory modifications surprise by BIOS.
    e820 remove range: 00000000000a0000 - 0000000000100000 (usable)
    e820 update range: 00000000dff00000 - 0000000100000000 (usable) ==> (reserved)
Just sum these areas and you get available memory, and ahead you can see how from this memory, some ranges are used for kernel only.

  • Media Encoder CS6 Not using all CPU Cores or RAM

I'm currently exporting a 90 second video (using the Vimeo HD 1080p preset), and it is taking about 30 minutes. This is extremely strange as I have an i7-990x OC'ed @4.5, 12GB RAM, SSD, etc.
I looked at Performance tab in Windows Task Manager, and saw 4 threads were not being used at all, only 20-25% of the CPU was in use, and only 6GB out of the 9GB I specified was being used.
Why isn't Media Encoder making full use of my CPU and RAM?

I'm having the same problem. But even worst.
For the test, I take a 10 min .mov or mp4 file, simply modify the "scale", and hit the export.
a 10 min file is taking 4 hours to render.
    This is on a:
    2012 MacBookPro i7 2.3Ghz, 16 GB 1600 DDR3, SSD disk. - Mac OSX 10.7.5
    and a:
    2011 iMac i7 3.7Ghz, 16 GB 1333 Mhz, 7200 RPM HD - Mac OSX 10.7.5
The CPU stays at 90% idle the whole time.
I know this is an old thread, but maybe someone could give me a hand.

  • How do i get my HP pavilion g7-1261nr to use all of its installed RAM?

    I have a Pavilion g7-1261nr notebook laptop.
    64-bit windows 7
I have 6GB installed memory, but the system says there is only 1.48GB of useable memory.
what can i do to get computer to make all memory, or most of it, useable. it seems this is a seriously small amount of useable memory.
would upgrading to 8GB RAM be the best option, or would it then only have 2.48GB useable memory?
if you can point to any other related forum posts or solutions, i would also greatly appreciate that.

How was the printer added? Using AirPrint or the HP ppd? Since Mavericks defaults to adding an AirPrint printer with the AirPrint ppd, it might be necessary to add it again with the HP ppd, after making sure you have the HP drivers installed.

  • Finder using all cpu power

my iMac goes to cpu 100% utilisation when I open a new finder window. Why?
    iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2009
osx 10.8.5 (although the problem has been with me now for quite a while)
The system appears to grind to a halt for 1 - 2 mins.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • HT4910 how do i reset to use all the storage available?    I have 10 available but it won't back up.

I Upgraded my iCloud sstorage but when I backup it will not back up, although I have 10 gb available.  What is next step?

If you get the message "Backup not successful",  I had the same problem.
My solution was to turn off some apps (Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap my device name in the Backups section, then look under Backup options) and try a manual backup.  If it didn't work, turn off a few more apps and try a backup.  Keep doing that until the backup works.  Then try adding in some of the last batch of apps that were previously turned off - the objective is to find the app that causes the backup to fail.  For me, I suspect that the one app I found had a bad data file that, when included in the backup, caused the backup to quit.
This can be a long process if you have a lot of apps that you originally turned on for backups.

  • Mac PP CS5 not using all CPU anymore

    All,
I was a cutting a project a while back and put it to the side for a while. I just went back to it and asked Prem to render the work are and was surprised to see it taking forever. I opened the CPU perf view and found hardly any CPU being used. I have a MacPro 2.9GHz 12 core machine with 48M memory and the project drive is a striped set of WD Caviar Blacks. Not only is the machine not breaking a sweat its not even getting out of bed.
Yes I have installed Apple patches since then and some software. PPCS5 is up to date. We I was using the machine a while back it was firing on all threads and cores.
    Has anyone seen this before?
    Jim

    Hi Bill,
Thanks for your email. Yes I did try PPBM5 with some success. Separate to this I decided to let the render run from end to end on my project to see what would happen. So what I saw:
    - first 600 odd frames very quick (very = blindingly)
    - then it got to 900 odd frames very quick but then came back to the 600th odd frame where each frame took minutes to render for about 60 frames.
    - all this time the machine didnt break a sweat,(basically flatline).
    - after the slow 60 frames all the processors came to life and for the rest of the render (thousands of frames and multiple sequences) and it was rendering normally
Im trying to figure out what those 60 frames were, as I cant see anything overly complex there that would mean PPCS5 would fail to use all the CPU available (if anything 1 core jumped up every now and then).
    Thanks

  • Safari uses all ram

A mid 2011 iMac, 8 GB of RAM.  If Safari is opened, it eventually consumes all RAM available and exhausts app memory.  I have completely wiped and reloaded, Tried a variety of OS versions, now 10.10, and no luck.  I'm pasting an Etre report for reference. I did follow one support tip to kill off Safari WebDav as that was going crazy as well. Any help appreciated.

  • Why Doesn't MS Project use all of a resource's availability when resource levelling is applied?

    Hi,
We are using MSProject 2010 and Project Server 2010 with Enterprise resources. All resources on all projects in the enterprise are shared resources. We are finding that after resource levelling is applied to the project some resources are only
being assigned a fraction of their total availability, and in some cases Project will assign 0 hours to a resource for several consecutive weeks even though the resource has capacity for the week the task is scheduled to start.
For example: Let's say we have a task that is scheduled to start on 1-20-14. The task is a 112 hours of effort with no constraints and one resource assigned to it. The resource is available 40 hours per week for the next 4 weeks. After resource
levelling I would expect Project to assign the resource as follows: 40 hours in week 1, 40 hours the next week and 32 hours the next week, for a total of 112 hours. Instead, Project does not assign the resource to the task until week 4 (even
though the resource has capacity on the start date of the task) and pushes the finish date out. In some weeks the resource has 0h hours showing in the timephased grid on the Resource Usage sheet.  We have experimented with the levelling settings and it
does not seem to matter which boxes are checked, but following is our preferred settings:
    1. Levelling Calculations set to Manual
    2. Look for overallocations on a day by day basis
    3. Clear levelling values before levelling is CHECKED
    4. Level entire project is selected.
    5. Levelling order is Priority,Standard
    6. Level only within available slack is CHECKED
    7. Levelling can adjust individual assignments on a task is CHECKED
    8. Levelling can create splits in remaining work is UNCHECKED
    9. Level resources with the proposed booking type is UNCHECKED
    10. Level manually scheduled tasks is CHECKED.
Does anyone have any ideas about why Project is not using the resource's available capacity?
    Thanks, Judy
    Judy Washington

    Hi Judy,
The resource leveling command is not a resource optimization tool.  It's only job is to resolve resource overallocations by delaying tasks.  It will not:
Change resource assignment units to tasks.
Ensure the resource is "fully" utilized.
    For example:
Resource with max units of 100% (the default).
Task A starts on 20 January until 22 January and the resource is assigned at 75%.
Task B starts on 21 January until 23 January and the resource is assigned at 50%
The resource is overallocated on Tuesday (peak = 125%) and Wednesday (peak = 125%).
    Leveling produces this result:
Project did not drop the assignment to Task B to 25% to allow it to continue while Task A was going on -- it simply delayed B (at 50%) until A was scheduled to finish.

  • HELP: Premiere Pro CC not using all CPU and RAM during rendering and export

    Hello,
I am using Premiere Pro CC on a Windows 7. My timeline is quite simple with two videos, one with the movie (mpeg) and the other with the subtitles (avi).
When I render the sequence in PP or export, the rendering time is way too slow and it only uses around 15-20% of the CPU and 3 GB of RAM.
    My hardware config is :
    - CPU : i7-4770k 3.50Ghz
    - RAM : 8 GB
    - Disk : 2 x 3 TB SATA (no raid)
RAM is not the bottleneck, neither the disk access.
I have tried rendering and exporting the same project on an iMac (with an i5 2.7 Ghz and 4 GB RAM and only 1 disk) and the result is 4x faster !!!
The CPU usage is close to 100% as well as RAM usage.
So how come PP uses all resources availble on an iMac and not on a Windows 7 ?
Is there any known bug or software bottleneck on Windows 7 ?
My machine is brand new and nothing much installed besides Adobe products.
Any help is very much appreciated.
    Thanks,

I just rendered out a a 2 minute sequence with about 100 clips in it and Colorista effects on everything to the Vimeo 1080 H264 preset. It took about 5 minutes to render straight from Premiere, it used all the recourses it could, my CPU was running at near %100, same with my ram and GPU, I was happy.
Then I did another render with Red Giant Denoiser and it now wants to take 30 mins and it is only using about %20 of the recourses available. My problem isn't that its taking longer with Denoiser but that its not using all of my computers CPU and GPU.
Im rendering at maximum render quality and bit dept to H264 (Im happy to wait the extra time), if I try to use VRB 2 it encodes 1 pass at a time and wants to take up to 40 minutes.
I would appreciate some advice on this.

I Thought that ram memory cycling from 12 to 0 gigs or so was and is a problem in and of itself. As you've explained and demonstrated it's not. But this scenario  that is now playing out has never happened since I've had this Mac Mini. Again many thanks.
SO if I may ask one other question separate from the above.
In updating to Yosemite would you recommend a clean install or just upgrading? I've not done a clean install since purchasing the Mini but I was thinking since I'm having issues with the system hanging and spinning icons perhaps performing a wipe is warranted. If so, I understand I can not just format and download Yosemite but I must reinstall Snow Leopard then update to Yosemite. Is this correct? Since I've upgraded the ram from 4 gigs to 8 and earlier this year to 16 gigs, will Snow Leopard recognize 16 gigs of ram?
    Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

  • PSE 13 organizer consumes all available RAM and crashes

I have found that I am unable to use PSE13 Organizer for more than a couple of hours without my system becoming unstable. Organizer keeps requesting RAM until it has taken up all available RAM and my virtual memory file has expanded to fill the hard drive it is on. At this point Organizer and most other running programs crash, the system becomes unstable and Windows issues  out of memory warnings. I am at a loss as to what to do about this. Does anyone know if Adobe is planning on fixing this rather major bug?
I am running Windows 8.1 64 bit on an AMD X6 1090 with 16GB RAM.
    Thanks

That's the first time I see that problem on Elements forums and bug reports.
Investigating your particular situation will require more info:
    - on your hardware, your preferences (scratch disk)
    - your organizer usage (photos or videos), autoanalyzer and other opened softwares
    - any plugins?
What happens if you stop and restart the organizer at shorter intervals? Do you see the RAM and virtual memory grow the same way?
The only remotely similar situation I have met on all Elements versions is the impossibility to delete a large number of files in the same batch. The Organizer slowly fills all the RAM, then issues an error message and rolls back to the situation before the delete command. No crash.

  • System expanding to use all RAM when idle

Just had my Mac Book at the Apple Store for tests because the fan was running a lot & computer was running really slow.  They found no hardware problem but suggested my problem was that the 2G of Ram was not enough because the system with nothing open was using over 75% of the RAM.   Installed 4G of RAM, now 2 days later, having restarted the computer several times, the system has expanded to using 80% of the RAM with just Safari open.   Anyone else having this problem.. open to suggestions.  Have reset the PRAM, Reset SMC, ran long harddrive test, had it to the Apple store, had them run there tests on??  This is a 13' Mac Book (late 2007) model, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with UTD software, now with 4G of RAM using 3.81G of RAM with just Safari and the Activity Monitor open.   Thoughts, suggestions, cures ..  all would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

You can find out which application is eating up your memory in Activity Monitor. Selet "All Processes" from the drop down on the right side of the window (next to the search field). Then click on the header for the column marked "Real Mem". This will list all of the process running sorted by how much memory they are reserving, and will give you a clue as to where the problem is.
What web pages do you have open in Safari? Safari can grab large amount of memory depending what kind of plugins a particular site uses.

  • SAP job not using all dialog processes that are available for parallel processing

    He Experts,
The customer is running a job which is not using all the dialog processes that are available for parallel processing. It appears to use up the parallel processes (60) for the first 4-5 minutes of the job and then maxes out about 3-5 processes for the remainder of the job.
How do I analyze the job to find out the issue from a Basis perspective?
    Thanks,
    Zahra

    Hi Daniel,
    Thanks for replying!
    I don't believe its a standard job.
I was thinking of starting a trace using ST05 before the job. What do you think?
    Thanks,
    Zahra
