Finder window closes when previewing video

Hi,
When browsing through my pictures I occasionally come across videos that I've taken on my camera. In the past Finder would show me a preview panel for the currently selected video. Now my computer pauses for a moment and then closes the Finder window.
Anybody have a solution?
Matt
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hello,
I think I'm having the same problem, I can no longer view any of the .avi videos that i have taken with my camera. and they used to work before. It does the same thing when i try. Finder pauses for a second and then re-opens. Also, when i attempt to open the video from iPhoto, it loads Quicktime for a second and then gives me the "Quicktime has quit expectantly" routine.
Furthermore, Quicktime seems to have a hard time running any .avi files. when i attempt to open them it takes several minutes to load and the fan speeds up during this time. after it finally loads it seems to work fine.
I have tryed deleting thos two files in the finder prefs. but it still does not work. any help would be great.

  • Finder window closes when trying to preview AVI file.. cant open file.

just bought a Nikon D90 that shoots HD video. After uploading the video's I shot to my iMac I am unable to open them. Going through the finder window.. once I click on the file and it starts to work for the preview the window will just close with no explanation. If I try to open the file from the desktop it causes quicktime to crash. Even right clicking on the file and clicking 'get info' causes the info window to open and immediately close.
I've restarted the computer... tried to upload the videos again but to no avail. The file size is 117.8MB.. but I dont think that should affect it.
The videos uploaded fine to youtube.

I think it's a good idea to check with Nikon; while you're talking to them, ask what format their cameras' videos are - from what I've read, AVI is not the actual format it's recorded in, but I'm not an expert on that - see the link to the Wikipedia article:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AudioVideoInterleave
Also try to shoot another video in a lower resolution - don't process or do anything to it with the camera, just take out the SDHC card and see if that'll work. I suggested the MPEGStreamclip because if you can drag it into that app, you could immediately convert it to a .mov or .dv file and that should work with either Quicktime, iMovie, or whatever.
At this point, you also might want to consider trashing any preference file of any application you've tried using with that video just in case any of them have become corrupted.

  • Finder Window closes when File is Deleted in 10.6 Server

I'm running OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) on an XServe serving 50 Mac Pros. I work with two finder windows open in column view with no side bar. This allows me to navigate and move files from any of 50 computers I have mounted to my server to another computer.
If there is a folder on the Desktop of one of the many computers I'm connected to, and it's the only thing on that Desktop of that computer, when I delete the folder the finder window I deleted the file from closes. In 10.5 my two windows would remain open no matter what I deleted. If there are other things on the Desktop the finder window will stay open when I delete any of the files, unless I delete them all and then the window will close.
Also if a drive is mounted and I unmount the drive in column view, this will close my finder window as well, even though all my other computers are still mounted in that window. In Leopard (10.5), if I unmounted a drive or deleted files off any computer mounted to my server, that window would remain open.
Furthermore, in column view with a side bar, when I delete the only folder on a computer's Desktop my finder window will not close, but it will kick me back to the side bar instead of leaving me on the desktop of the computer I was deleting the file off of. This is just about annoying as having the window close, because I still have to navigate back to the computer I was working on.
I think it's just a new way 10.6 handles this stuff. It seems if there is nothing left in a folder (such as a Desktop) then Snow Leopard assumes you don't need that window open and closes it. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

By the way, I'm running Snow Leopard Server, not simply Snow Leopard.

If you have iPhoto '09, you cannot browse or restore seleted items from your backups.  See the pink box in #15 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
Mail should work, however, per the blue box there.

  • Finder is crashing when previewing files

My finder keeps crashing when previewing files from an external hard drive. It's mov-files and stills(cr2).
I have files recorded on two separate days. When previewing files day 2 there's no problem but when previewing files from day 1 finder is crashing every time. I have back up of all the files on another drive. On the back up drive there's no problem to preview files.

That is why I want you to erase it.. so you can get access.. but I cannot trial it for you... I do not have one.. you have to trial it yourself.
Setup the TC to use Accounts.. not use disk password or device password.. after an erase.
    See if that fixes it.
See this post for different but maybe related issue.

  • Finder window closes as soon as it opens

I have some recovered data that has been giving me problems.  After copying the folder back to a rebuilt MBP, the finder window closes immediately upon opening that folder.  Any ideas on what exactly is corrupt or forcing this window to close?
    MBP 17, 10.8.2

I guess if this were happening to me, I would suspect that one or more files in that folder is sufficiently corrupted to kill the Finder.   I would create a new folder and, using Terminal and its mv command, move files one by one into the new folder, testing to see if the original folder can be opened after each step.  Others may have better plans....

  • Problem creating playlists library window closes when opening new playlist

library window closes when opening new playlist impossible to drag and drop songs from lib to new playlist

    Hi
You don't need to open a playlist to drag and drop from your library. Just open the library and drag the selected item or items to the NAME of the chosen playlist (in blue bars on the lower left) and just drop it there. When you hold the items over the playlist name, it will show you a little green dot with a plus sign in it and the number or items being dropped. Then when you are done dragging and dropping you can open the playlist and see that the items were added. Hope this makes sense.
    Good luck!

  • Cannot link files in illustrator CC, as finder window closes by itself after installing maverick

Hi, After installing Mavericks (Doh!) I can no longer link files in illustrator CC as the finder window closes by itself after one second or if I click on anything. It was happening with save as also, but that seems to have rectified itself by reinstalling the program. Anyone any thoughts? Im in a spot of bother!

  • Finder Window Flashes When Showing Preview Of Multimedia Files.

When Show Icon Preview is selected the finder window flashes(i.e, its gets highlighted and deactivated in a flashing manner) especially when previewing files of movies and pictures(PDF previewing is fine). The problem is there even in cover flow mode while loading the preview, and once the preview(thumnails) of files are done the finder behaves normal. When i checked the problem in another account it's working fine with out any problem in show icon preview mode, clover flow mode.I think the problem is a corrupted preference file.I tried deleting com.apple.finder.plist but its of no use...

    You are using Perian?
--> Delete ~/Library/Preferences/org.perian.Perian.plist and re-login! May update the Perian tool and the flashing is gone.

  • Finder windows have blank preview.

I've gone through system preferences and can't figure out why when i click on any file in a window the preview will load but there is no picture. If i click on a movie it will load and i can click on where the play button would be if i could see it; there is sound but no picture.
    For example:
Thanks for any and all suggestions!

    HI,
Could be the Finder preferences are corrupted.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move this file; com.apple.finder.plist to the Trash.
    Open a new Finder window.
If that doesn't help, go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file:
    com.apple.QuickLookDaemon.plist to the Trash.
Try a new Finder window. Hopefully that did the trick.

  • Finder window opens when user logs in

I apologize if this has been answered previously - I can't find anything on this topic.
Every time a user logs in to one of my eMacs - OS 10.4.10 (whether it be a local or network user) a new finder window opens that displays the users home. I would like this window to stop opening. I've read some responses that say to close the window then log out and the window should be gone when you log back in. That is not the case. I thought this solution my work on my local users but it doesn't work for either type of user.
I'm trying to avoid writing a script to close the window. I'd like the window to just stop opening in the first place. I tried editing the finder.plist file and I can change what the window opens to, but I can't "turn off" the actual opening of the window.
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I do not have anything checked in the login items. This is happening for both local and network accounts. I'm more concerned about this issue for my network users.
I've discovered that the problem seems to have something to do with a script I had running via a login hook. Is there any way to run a script when a network user logs in without adding it to a login hook?
We have a program on our eMacs that resets the computer back t o its original state every time the computer is restarted. For this reason network user profiles are never stored on the eMac they are recreated from the default user template every time a user logs in.
Maybe this extra information will help!
    Thanks!

  • Does anyone know why my finder window resizes when I enter time machine?

Can anyone explain why my finder changes size when I enter time machine? I'm pretty sure this didn't happen on Snow Leopard but it does since I installed Lion. It's only a small glitch but it's rather annoying since I have positioned and resized the finder window on my desktop to the place I want it - in the centre of the screen and showing all the folders in my sidebar list. When I enter time machine the finder window becomes shorter, therefore not showing all the sidebar folders. I wouldn't mind if when I exit time machine it reverts back to the way it was but it doesn't so I have to resize over again!
    Anyone know why this happenes?

Take a snapshot of this issue and send it to Apple. I think it may be a small glitch.

  • Distribution Window Closes when entering a large number of Distributions

When entering distributions (around 20-30 or so, but no specific number) for an invoice, the distribution window closes without warning. The distributions are saved but the process is unreliable. See the attached documents for the errors given.
The first error is not really an error so much as the message Oracle gives when it is trying to catch up, "Press cancel to end this database operation". This message will linger for about 3-5 seconds then the message along with the distribution window suddenly close.
When you go to click on the distribution button immediately after the window closes a second error appears: APP-SQLAP-97734: The system cannot generate distributions for line 1 because: Verify line does not contain distributions: line already has distributions"
There is no specific dollar amount or number of distributions where this error occurs. It does not happen all the time when we have a large amount of distributions but enough to make entering a large amount of distributions a cautious activity slowing data entry.
    Any Ideas?

    Hello.
Have you checked MOS DOC Id 823787.1 ?
    Hope this helps.

  • Transaction launcher window closes when ending interaction

    Hi,
I have created a launch transaction which is launched from a logical link in the navigation bar. The launch transaction is opened in a new window. When the agent presses the End button in Interaction Center, there is a pop-up saying that "there are active launch transactions, would you like to close them automatically?". If chosing OK, the launch transaction window closes, if chosing cancel the interaction is not ended and the launch transaction window is still open.
Is there a way to end the interaction without closing the launch transaction window?

Just in case someone will need to implement something similar overriding the standard functionality
I did it with an enhancement (CL_CRM_IC_ACTIVE_ACTIONS):
    method if_crm_ic_prepare_for_callback~execute .

    FIELD-SYMBOLS: type ict_active_ltx.

    READ TABLE gt_active_ltx assigning with key ltx_id = '<TRANSACTION_LAUNCHER_ID>'.
    IF sy-subrc = 0.
    TRY.
    <lfs_active>-ltxhandler->process_return( lv1_dumy_request ).
    CATCH cx_root.

  • Finder window freezing when attempting to find...

I have a fresh install of 10.5.8 client on a PPC-based G5 tower. Having an odd issue where, if I open a new Finder window and do a find (command-f), the window gets "stuck" (doesn't change to the "find"-based window, gets stuck at whatever it was when I hit command-f). The rest of the desktop and computer responds as normal, it's just that single window that gets stuck — it's almost like it the desktop/GUI won't update the drawing of just that window. I can open new Finder windows and do everything else — but the only way to get rid of the stuck window is to kill Finder and let is restart.
I've tried re-applying te 10.5.8 combo updater, created a new admin user, etc. — all the standard troubleshooting stuff. Going to continue working this out, but wondering if anyone else has every experienced this?
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

Hi Kristin, not seen this single Finder window problem before.
You've already covered most things with what you've done.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
    Reboot, test again.
