Finder window cuts content view

Hi,
Somewhat randomly, when I return focus to a given Finder window, its view cuts the contents and I can't see the file's name, only the info that usually stays at its right. Please check the attached image for better explanation of this problem.
Does it happen to anyone else? Is this a know problem? Can it be fixed?
Thanks in advance,
Jorge

Might be corrupted Finder preferences ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.finder.plist files to the Trash.
Restart your Mac then try a Finder window.

  • Finder Window Sizes and View Options

In an earlier message under Mac OS X Panther it was recommended that I post a new message in the AppleScript forum.
I'm looking for a way to automate the repetitive task of resizing Finder windows and resetting view options. For example resetting a hundred folders to the same window size and screen position with the same view options. This requires manually adjusting each window one by one.
A solution could be an AppleScript that would automate this task.
The following is the earlier message:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1283081#1283081
I mistakenly deleted all the preference files for the Finder window options on my 17 inch PowerBook (.DS_Store Files).
This has returned all Finder windows to default settings for window sizes and view options.
I use custom widow sizes for all my folders that nicely fit the 17 inch screen on my PowerBook, leaving enough desktop space on the right for the hard drive icons and the Dock that I always keep vertical on the right.
I have a 12 inch PowerBook as well. And it has it's own custom window size that fits it's much smaller screen. It has always been a complaint of mine to have to manually reset windows whenever I needed to transfer folders with Bluetooth file exchange.
Resetting Finder window sizes and view option has always been a time consuming problem. Now to have to do it over again for hundreds of windows is a huge task that is way to manual.
The Finder is customizable. There must be a way to set the options for one window and be able to use those adjustments for other windows without having to re adjust each setting manually.
There was an application called Finder Window Manager. Maybe someone knows of another application that can do this of task or another way around this issue.

    Photoscene,
I think if you repost this to the AppleScript link, someone there will have a solution for you (in the form of an applescript that you can run)...

Give it a shot (I'm not clever enough to give you a good script yet, but someone there will be!)

  • Finder window shifts content off screen to the left.

This is posted in the Finder discussion also. I post it here also in the chance this is a Retina display issue. I never experienced this problem with Lion on my old MacBook Pro, just on my new Retina display.
On several occasions the window in my Finder shifts the contents off screen to the left. For example, in column view, the left most edge of the Finder window might be displaying files listed in column 2 or 3. And even that is only the rightmost sliver of that column, showing maybe the last 6 to 10 characters of the file/fold names. There is no horizontal scroll bar and there appears to be no way to force the leftmost content (which is off screen to the left) to come back onto the screen. This appears to happen randomly; at least I've not noticed a pattern. I'm usually in Column view. When this happens switch between view options provides no solution. Minimizing and resizing also have no affect. Scrolling does not work, nor does using the arrow keys. The only solution is to close the window and open a new one.
Anyone have this happen? Any ideas as to cause or cure?
Closing the window and opening a new one is not a "major" crisis, but the fact such a bug is running around is undermining my confidence in the system.
    Thanks for your help.

Please post a screen shot of what you are seeing. If you mean to the left of the Finder Window, it goes under the Sidebar area this is normal if your focus is in the Next to right most column. Like this?
That is completely normal. The left hand side has to go somewhere when the focus in more to the right.
Although myh scroll bar does allow me to go back to the left.

My Mid 2011 MacBook Air (shipped with Lion) has been having this exact problem for some time now.
It started being really annoying when I placed the Dock to the right part of the screen. 'Drag and Drop' anything to the Dock would almost always reproduce the problem to all Finder windows.
The only solution I found was to force close the Finder. And, of course, moving the Dock back to the bottom part. It still happened, just less often.
This issue is still happening after upgrading to Mountain Lion. But now it happens to a single window and I can solve it simply closing it.
It is not something to drive me mad either, but I am surprised there are so few people discussing this bug. I would love to know if there is already a solution.
    Thanks.

  • Finder Window in icon view problem

Ok, for example, finder window has enough folders that I have to scroll down quite a bit to reach mid page. Then I open a folder at mid page and open one of the folders I find in there. I then click twice to go back to the original window. But instead of revealing itself in mid page, so I can go on to the next folder, it opens at the top of the page and I have to scroll all the way down to where I was, sometimes losing track of where I was. This is something that did not happen in Jaguar or Panther! Anyone have a fix for this? I need to use icon view for my work.

crebius, can't you just click the red close window
buttons until you get back to the one that is open at
    half page?
Eh, I don't use a different window for every layer of a folder i get into. Just one window. But I've been playing with view options (Tiger) and figured out a workaround. I clicked on 'Show icon preview' and 'Keep arranged by' (name - for me).
    Thanks for trying to help.

  • Re: Finder windows in Column View

I can't seem to attach a file at Google Chrome, the Finder Window is too tall and unable to click 'Save', 'Cancel', etc. I had to pick a document/photo to exit the window.

Is anyone having this trouble too?
I noticed this delay when I first moved to Leopard. Side-by-side with a much slower machine running Tiger, the delay was extremely noticeable.
Now it is just as quick as Tiger. Sadly I don't know what has caused the delay to go away. FWIW, my initial Leopard instal was an Upgrade. I have since done an Erase & Instal: a bit drastic, and I'm not even sure this was the cause. I think the situation had improved before the 10.5.1 update.
The most plausible reason is that it occurred after the weekly maintenance script was first run on the new installation. You might like to try this, it can do no harm:
Open the Terminal (from /Applications/Utilities) and copy and paste the following into the Terminal window followed by a return:
    sudo periodic weekly
Press return and you will be prompted for your password. This is not echoed for security reasons, so you won't see anything as you type: just type it and press return.
If you haven't used 'sudo' before, you will receive a little lecture before being prompted for the password. Read it and continue. It will take a couple of minutes to complete—you'll know it is finished when your shell prompt reappears.
I would be very interested to know if this helps, because, as I said, I suffered this slowness initially. It would be good to know what made it go away.

  • Is there a way to view just one open Finder window (without any other Finder or other application windows coming into view) from a Desktop hot corner in Yosemite?

I just upgraded to Yosemite from Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro. Previously, I could view just one open Finder window by viewing the Desktop via a hot corner and then selecting Finder from the Dock. This would pull only the top Finder winder into view, without showing any other open Finder windows, and most importantly, any other open application windows. I could then easily drag files/folder from my Desktop into the Finder window (which I do A LOT). Since upgrading to Yosemite, whenever I use the Desktop hot corner and select Finder from the Dock, it pulls every open application and Finder window back into view, putting Finder in front.
Is there any way to view just one already open Finder window (or all Finder windows for that matter) without seeing all other open applications, without having to Hide the other applications or using Spaces?

Yes I've created an Automator Application that does the job, but the "watch me do" function that does the Mail Merge is a rather Clunkey work around, as the mouse moves all over the place, thats the part i want to remove and replace with a script, or work out a different way around it that avoids the "watch me do" function.
Is this Possible? or where/who is there i can ask to write me a script, im not a novice to scripting, but i am a novice to Applescript.

  • How do I get all Finder windows to open in spatial view?

How do I get all Finder windows without special view options set to open in the 'spatial' mode (without the toobar or sidebar)? The ones I specifically change stay that way, but I want all new and old folders to be like that too.

That's called the simple Finder mode. You would need to configure that as part of Parental Controls in the Accounts preferences. To make any Finder window appear that way jut click on the gadget in the top right corner of the Finder window.

  • "Name" portion of my Finder windows too long

When I open most (but not all) Finder windows, the Name section is extremely long, even when the names in the directory or folder are very short.
Does anyone know a way to reset or define the width of the name column? The other columns seem fine.

Thanks, I agree it's a bug but one doesn't throw such words around here too quickly. Here  are the main issues:
    • It does not matter how I adjust the size of the NAME section in a Finder Window in List view. The next time the very same window is open, it defaults to the original size when initially opened with the NAME section too long for the content.
    • The NAME section is always extremely long regardless of what is in the list (see image attached).
    • Often, the TAG dot is so far over to the right that is does ot appear.  It is not visible because the LIST COLUMN is too long. The rest of the window columns (SIZE, KIND, etc.) are similarly completely hidden in the overlarge window scrolling off to the right. They can be scrooled into view, but still default to the "too large" size when the window is opened.
    • About half the time, it is not possible to adjust the LIST VIEW column size by the handle betweem the sections (NAME, DATE, KIND, etc.). Clicking on the handle (the line between sections) has no effect and the left and right arrows do not appear. This seems to be limited to only the NAME section ofthe window.
Again, resizing the screen does nothing to fix any of this. I've looked at the FInder Preferences in the User Library which I have bolded below. I have opened and changed these in TextWrangler but they revert to the exact same settings, which I assume is becuase there is no way to quit the Finder w/o it saving the currently used preferences and settings (at least the unmutable ones). I will try booting in Target mode and replacing that file later today to see if i can force the OS to default to a smaller column size.
Please! No more "novice" answers to this question. It's not a matter of my not understanding how the Finder works, nor any user error. The Finder windows on this system, for whatever reason, are not working efficiently and not accepting user adjustments for some reason. THAT is what I am trying to address.
Thanks again, Edwin Drood, for your confirmation of the issue.
    Best,
    mm

  • Weird Finder Window quirk

This is a new one. Woke my computer up from sleep with a Finder window in List view and the headings (Name, Date Modified, Size, Kind) appear in bold, something I've never seen before. They weren't that way last night when I went to sleep!
And I would love to upload the screenshot I have, but the system won't let me. Hope that's descriptions clear enough.
Any thoughts? Because this looks ugly right now.

The sudo atsutil databases -remove command seemed to work then, two days ago, I'm running Time Machine and I got two different results when I opened up new windows. Attached are the screen shots!
As you can see, at one point BOTH sets of headings were in bold, then 20 minutes later only ONE set of headings was in bold.
It's just weird. Not causing any problems, just weird.

  • Problem sorting items in finder window

I've searched other posts and seen that others are having similar issues however, I can't a solution to my problem.
In a finder window in list view, in the upper part of the window, I have Name, Date Modified, Size and Kind.  Before I upgraded to Mavericks, I could click any of those options and the window would sort accordingly.  Now, if I want to sort a window, I have to open the view options and do it that way.  The weird thing is, I have a RAID connected via esata and it works like it should on any window I open from that drive.  Any suggestions?

  • How to make default settings for a new Finder window ?

Will, i am abit ashamed to ask this question cause it's problaby very basic OSX knowledge.
    However, since using 10.0 , i never have find a solution ..
    What i want is this:
EVERY new Finder window i open, be it with the keycommand (CMD)+N, or double clicking a Folder a disk icon, has to be shown to me in only 1 way
    which i have setup beforehand.
I am talking bout: List view only, with specified columns ("date added" for example etc) in a vast specific order.
For these settings, i open one finder window, setup the "view options" for that window, re-arrange the columns, then do: save as default"
Now, i would say that next time i open a new finder window, (keycommand (CMD)+N, or double clicking a Folder a disk icon), it defaults to the settings i made above.
    But nada.
OSX has always intuitive for me but this issue scratches my brains.
    Can someone please help ??

Hi Kappy, you are a Hero !
Especially this, which i really didn't know: (quote) : "Note that the configuration will only stick whenever the Finder window is opened on the same directory where it was created"
    Very, very helpful !
Even the order of the columns is retained
However, i wish the (CMD)+J settings would apply for ANY Finder window you open, not just ones that are in the same directory.
    Cheers and thx again !!

  • After updating, menus are now transparent & windows in list view black!

I recently updated via the software update control panel some security updates and a few misc. other application updates and have now discovered that Finder pull-down menus are now totally transparent with the text appearing somewhat transparent (still readable with effort, depending on background clutter on desktop). Additionally, Finder windows in list view appear with black backgrounds and the text to folders and items within that window also is black meaning that I can only see the icons and am unable to read file and folder names.
Attempts to fix this problem have thus far included permissions repair, download and reinstall the 10.4.8 combo updater and these have not worked.
I am not blaming this issue on the updates, but it coincides in timing with that and I am quite puzzled. One interesting note is that a folder now exists on the main drive directory called "Developer," which was not there before.
Does anyone have a suggestion or an idea of what this could be?
