Finder Window - Date Modified Column Keeps Changing

When I open a Finder window, change the size of the "Date Modified" column then close the Finder window, the next time I open the same Finder window, the "Date Modified" column will compress the size of the column.
Why isn't Finder 10.9 maintaining my column changes?
Any assitance or insight whould be appreciated.

I solved the scrunched Date Modified column header in a similar fashion but added the Date Added field, which fixed the width of both Date columns.
After doing so, I now find both Date-oriented columns display and read dynamically the actual date and time.
I'm now looking for a solution to that issue, explained here:
finder window date added date modified show date time always

  • Items "date modified" column when viewing files as list in finder

I'm not really sure if I can change this viewing option, but i will give it a try:
when viewing files as list in finder, "yesterday" items "date modified" column shows up with the term "yesterday", while this does not happen for "today" items, where what shows up is just today's date and not the term "today".
I found this rather confusing, since it is not immediate: i.e. if I want to check for items modified today at a glance, i need to pick today's date from a ist with a number of different dates. As a matter of fact, it's a way easier when checking for yesterday's items.
    Suggestions anyone?
    Thanks!

toygal -- welcome to the Aperture user-to-user forum. iPhoto was designed with you in mind. Aperture is 100x more complicated (and no faster). I strongly recommend that you revert to iPhoto and use it. Compared to Aperture, it will bring you more pleasure and cause you much less frustration. Whoever told you that Aperture is faster not only was wrong, they failed to take into consideration the hours that you would have to practice to become comfortable with it.

  • Finder window date added date modified show date time always

Is there a preference setting to have a finder window with Date Added and Date Modified columns enabled to always show the date and time? Currently, the column information is dynamic, like just providing a time where you infer Today, or one column does show the date and time but the other only shows the date, or it reads Today, 12:31pm.
I want every window when displaying Date Added or Date Modified columns to always, consistently show the date and time, e.g. 3/15/14, 7:31AM.
    Aloha and Mahalo!

I found half of the answer: View:Show View Options - Deselect Use Relative Dates.
Now I just need a solution to always show the time and not only the date.
Curiously, when you initially enable a column in a Finder window, it shows both the date and time; however when you return to the window after closing it, you lose the time of day on Date Added, but not on Date Modified. -- Bug or Feature?

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • Finder list view name column keeps resizing!

I mainly use list view in Finder, and I mainly use windows (as opposed to fullscreen) because I like dragging and dropping between them (dragging and dropping in fullscreen with tabs is rather cumbersome).
Anyway, the name column keeps resizing on me, going from what I have it set to (usually double-clicked to make it fit all filenames) to suddenly being small enough that all the other columns fit in the window without a horizontal scroll bar. This has been happening ever since I upgraded to Yosemite and happens every time I open a new Finder window, expand a folder, move a file, etc. It's incredibly frustrating!
I was surprised to not find much about this problem mentioned around the web, so I imagine it must be some setting or something specific to my machine. Any help in figuring out how to make it stop doing this would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!

Sorry, no, preferences in the sense of what I prefer, but I believe view options (command J) are stored in DS_Store files, as well as list view column data, such as date added, date modified, name, kind, size, etc (except for some folders such as network, computer and meetingroom/airdrop?) which are stored in com.apple.finder.plist).  You probably know that you can select which columns display in view options.  Perhaps a temporary workaround would be to switch off other visible columns to display only name or name and one other preferred column to increase space available.  However, myself and another suspect this the problems I described as a bug, and I would have to think your issue is part of that bug.  It seems all related, no? For example, in my Downloads folder, I select to hide "Date Modified", show "Date Added", and arrange by "Date Added".  Maybe it will still show if I close the window and reopen the Downloads folder, maybe it will not, maybe it will change completely to Icon View despite have "always open in list view" being selected in view options.  In any case, after a restart, it will revert back to list view, with "Date Modified" showing and being arranged by "Name".
Sent feedback to apple, maybe will help if you do as well:

  • Date Modified on folders changes globally after crashed

Our server running Windows Server 2003 R2 shut down unexpectedly due to a power issue and the battery back didn't kick on (a separate issue). After starting back up, all of the folders on the server have updated their Date Modified to the current date. This
wouldn't be a problem except that my differential backup see all of the folders as modified and backs up everything during the differential backup which doesn't work for me. Is there a way to revert this change or prevent it in the future?
EDIT: Also, The C: drive is not affected in this manner - only the drive that stores our job data.

    Hi,
Based on my research, the Date Modified changed could be due to corrupt Update Sequence Number Journal. The USN Journal is a feature of NTFS which maintains a record of changes made to the volume.
You could try to refer to article below to check if it could resolve the issue.

  • Finder/Window-Content not responding to changes and doesn't refresh

    Hi,
i have a very strange Problem with the Finder since i upgraded to 10.6.4. The Finder doesn't react to changes from certain Applications.
I noticed the effect in the Folder 'Downloads', f.e. if i try to download a file. Usually two files appear, the intended file with 0 kB and another temporary file. After the download is complete the temporary file will be deleted and only one file remains.
Usually the whole process is visible and shown in the finder window. After the update it isn't which means that if i download a file, the Window content does not reflect the changes and the new files are not shown, even after the download is complete. To see the new files i have to trigger a change, either by creating a new folder or by changing the location (moving up a level).
Interesting enough this only happens with certain Applications like Firefox or 'the Unarchiever' (a compression tool). If i download a file with Safari the temporary files and the downloaded files are shown in the window content without manually triggering a change. If i use 'keka' (another compression tool) the changes are also immediatly shown.
In order to narrow down possible errors i have taken different approaches:
    a) i intently scanned and watched the console and read all error reports. There are no errors shown (with firefox or the unarchiever).
    b) I created a new user profile and the effects are the same.
    c) i ran 'disk utilities' and scanned the Access priviliges. Apart from the common problem within /system/java/... there are no problems
    d) i ran 'onxy' to clean the user and system cache. I rebuild the LaunchService Database.
    I didn't fix my Problem.
That leads me to conclude that the problem is located in some system-function which is correctly triggered by some applications and apparently not by others.
    My Questions:
    1. Does anyone else has this problem and possibly a fix?
    2. Does anyone know how the finder is triggered by applications in order to refresh a window?
    tia,
    jc

    Hi Jeanclaude,
You've described the problem well and took some excellent troubleshooting steps
    b) When you created the new profile, were you still engaging your third party apps, or are they installed in log-in items?
    1. It would be interesting to try a Safe Mode startup (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
2 If step 1 doesn't turn up anything, re-install from your 10.6.x install disk (10.6 has the ability to "install in place" without touching anything other than system specific files.) Just pop in the disk, double-click and follow the prompts. Remember to uncheck language localizations if you don't use them & Printers except the one/ones you use.
Let us know your results after these 2 steps.

  • Jpeg's "date modified" isn't changing?

    Using CS5.5 / Win7 x64.
We do a lot of stuff using smart objects - replacing logos etc. Load the template image, swap the logo, save a new PSD file with the new logo on it in case we need it again, then save a jpeg for the client.
Oddly (and I think this has only started to happen since I've been working at home and saving onto a local drive on a laptop, rather than onto a server) the new PSD has today's date as its Date Modified, but the jpeg doesn't - it seems to use the original image's created date instead, which might be a few years ago in the case of some of the images. So when I'm attaching files to an email to send to the client, all the jpegs I want are all over the folder, instead of at the top with their associated PS files (sorted by date, newest first).
Only a small niggle, but with the volume of images I'm having to do, it slows me down a lot, and I'm risking missing images. Is this a Windows thing, or some option in Photoshop I've overlooked somewhere?

It turns out I'm an idiot. I was looking at the Date field rather than Date Modified, so it was a Windows thing after all.

  • Finder Windows Always Locked - After Permission Change

    Hello.
I noticed that other users on my computer had access to some folders (those I created) within my home directory. I didn't want this to be the case so I set permissions for my home directory and did "Apply to all items" so that the permissions are now "Me - Read & Write" and "everyone - Write only (Drop Box)." I am an administrator on the computer.
Now, every time I do a "get info" on a folder I have to unlock it by typing in my password, whereas before the get info windows were unlocked. I'm not positive the permission change is what cased the locked Finder windows, but I think that is what caused it. Also, I tried unlocking the folder and then doing the "apply to enclosed items" but that did not help.
    Thanks for any help,
    KK

    1. Use the "apply to enclosed items" option with great care. Not all items in your home folder should have the same settings, & certainly you would not normally want everyone to be able to write to them all, even if they can't read what they put there!
    2. AFAIK, in Leopard the lock at the bottom of the Get Info window always is in the locked state when the window is first opened, regardless of who owns the item it shows. Generally, you only need to unlock it with an admin password to make sharing & permissions changes. If you own the file, you should be able to (for instance) add Spotlight comments or change the name without needing to unlock it. IOW, the lock is for the sharing & permissions section, not the entire window.

  • Birth dates for contacts keep changing

I have this weird situation where the birthdates of my contacts keep changing. I noticed this a while back and reset them all, and today I noticed they have changed again. A contact whose birthday is say the 24th of a given month is now displayed as the 22nd. My time zone setting in System Preferences still remains the same - Pacific Daylight - Vancouver, Canada. Anyone got ideas on this?
    Thanks
    Bren.

Just looked at my iCal and noticed someone's birthday was wrong by a day, so I checked the Address Book contact and sure enough, the birth date has changed again. Could this now be back-loading from my Mobile Me account? Would the answer be to delete the library file again, and reset the sync to Mobile Me from my laptop to make sure that file is current too? The worst part about this is I'll need to get in touch with a lot of people to confirm their birthdays as Address Book has changed it more than once.

  • Date modified attribute not changing

    hie,
    the situation is this:
everytime I modify a file in netbeans or zend (a javabased php editor), the changes made to the file are written ok, but the "date modified" attribute of the file is not changed, thous, when I try to commit (cvs) the file, the cvs clients tells me that theres nothing to commit. I have to open the file with notepad, do something, and then save it, in order to get the date changed and then send it.
I post this here, because i believe its a config java thing, that could solve both IDE problems.
thanks in advance for any idea.

Apparently you are maintaining the file open; until closed, the date is not updated.

  • Finder window sizing in column view.

Does anyone know if it is possible for the Finder to automatically expand the view to the longest file name in column view? It is very frustrating to have to drag the little lines on the lower right to the right to resize the window manually whenever I open a document folder. I hope I am not confusing anyone but it is hard for me to describe what I mean. Why do I have to manually resize it to the length of the longest file name every time?
    Thanks.

I don't think the "Finder" can be configured to resize itself automatically whenever an item with a long name appears in a given window. However, double-clicking the "little lines" (the ones that look like "||" at the base of each column separator) will cause that column to self-adjust to display the longest name. Since a double-click requires less effort than a manual drag, hopefully that will save you a little bit of frustration.
If a generally wider column is preferred, try holding down the option-key while resizing the column - all columns should be resized simultaneously in that window, and the setting should be retained as the default width.

  • How can I find the date modified and group membership in contacts?

I used to have a smart group that could show the modification date, but those criteria don't exist in mountain lion (ML)
i also had a script that would find any contact that was not a member of any group. It does not work any more in ML.

    still can't figure it out

  • Date Created, Date Modified format

    Hello.
I have set several database fields as Autogenerated with Date Created or Date Modified option in Designer 9i. TAPI generated populate the field with time value missing - only the date (e.g. '06.06.2002'). I want the field to contain time as well (e.g. '06.06.2002 11:23:34'). What Designer option to find? Thanks.
    Ivan Virag

This is a preference setting, and the default is to use date only - no time value. To change the preference in the Design Editor, do this.
Select Options from the menu at the top of the screen.
Select Generator Options from the dropdown menu.
Select General... from the next level menu.
On the General Generator Options there is a checkbox labeled: Record Time On Change History Columns.
Check this box, press the OK button, and re-generate the TAPI. You'll see the TRUNC(SYSDATE) in the generated code for maintaining your Date Created and Date Modified columns has changed to just SYSDATE.
Unfortunately, this changes it for any application you generate - that is fine with me, but your requirements may vary.

  • Date Modified of folders & aliases changing by themselves

    Hi,
I have the same problem described by Craig_D in
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2191472
where I get the Date Modified of folders changing by themselves. Aliases too. I recently upgraded from OS 9 to 10.4. I think I've narrowed the scenario down somewhat:
Say I have a finder window open in list view, and it contains a folder called Enclosing Folder. Enclosing Folder contains two folders called SubfolderA and SubfolderB. If I click the carrot to see the contents of SubfolderA, the modification date of Enclosing Folder changes to the current date & time even though I haven't changed anything. But if I wait a few minutes and then click the carrot to see the contents of SubfolderB, or if I do that a second time for SubfolderA, the modification date/time of Enclosing Folder DOES NOT change. So the pattern seems to be that the Date Modified of a folder changes the first time you open a subfolder inside it, and never again? The silver lining is that it only happens once (I hope), but why does it happen at all and can it be prevented?.
Similarly, I get the Date Modified of aliases changing by themselves when I do a Get Info on them. I'm not changing anything, just looking at the get-info window of the alias. Why should that change the mod date? Similarly to what I described w/ the mod date on the folders, if I wait a few minutes and then do another get-info on the alias the mod time does not change. BUT: I just did a get-info on an alias that I had done a get-info on several hours ago, and the mod time DID change again on that one. The only difference I can think of is that my puter had been shut down during those interim hours.
Finally, if I do a find (command-F) for folders modified today, I get folders that I did modify today plus some folders that I haven't even gone near any time recently.
What is going on w/ modification date/time in OS X?
    Thanks

Just today struggling with something that may be related; looking forward to some solution.
New to discussion boards; does this reply to an existing message get seen by Mac staffers or do I need to post a new question?
We have multiple users on the imac, and the problem is ONLY affecting one of them.
The problem is: if a Word (Word 2004) document is opened and closed, no changes made, no Save command, the "date modified" changes to the current date and time. Not true for other apps we have tried (Powerpoint, Photoshop, imovie). Was not fixed by trashing Word preferences. Very annoying as we use the date modified to help keep track of versions.
