'finder' window disappears immediately
Upgraded to Mavericks and my wife's account is now useless as the finder window that opens during 'save as' or any other operation to access files from within an application -- Photoshop, Firefox, Pages, Safari.. opens and then immediately closes.
I created a new account and everything is fine.
I deleted her account and recreated it - reconnecting to her files and the problem still persists.
Anyone have any ideas what is happening?
We've been Mac users for several decades and have never seen anything like this before.

LR 5.2 updated, loaded Maverick Finder window disappears
LR 5.2 updated to Maverick OS X, now when open new catalog, export any item, finder will appear for 2 seconds then disappear. OR may stay open on the second attempt, then close when you select a folder to export to. Here is the error message on screen, below. Google for issue, only found suggestion turning off NAP APP, which is now turned off, still same issue.
Click on Export, to find a folder, Finder window closed

Thanks for the help RustyOkay .. after EVERYTHING was working WELL I made the mistake of taking an ADOBE UPDATE to my Photoshop CC. Directly following THAT update (from ADOBE) both LR and PS fail as before. Since ONLY Adobe made changes to my computer, how can Apple be the culprit? As a matter of fact, even though my coverflow is NOT on, both LR and PS open their diaglogs in that view and I am unable to change that. Certainly my Adobe programs are revealing this issue. It sounds from your note above that Adobe is just treating it like an Apple issue.
Fortunately I did take a Time Machine backup BEFORE installing the Adobe updates so I can roll back.
UPDATE:
I opened InDesign and the open dialog opened in CoverFlow and failed. The next time I used the open dialog I quickly changed the view to details (InDesign runs a little slower so I was able to do that). Once I had changed the view, no problems .. all fixed (in InDesign)
Since I had successfully changed the view from CF to details in InDesign, I figured "maybe" all the adobe programs would recognize the change. I then successfully opened Photoshop, which now opens with the details view and is successful.
At least I know HOW to make it work if it gets messed up again .. which happens whenever I update an Adobe program.
My finder was in DETAIL view before and after my updates.
The ONLY place where coverflow showed up was in the Adobe programs. -
Find Window disappearing off top of screen
A colleague's find window is 'stuck' off the top of the screen! The lower part is visible.
Reset/change workspace doesn't help. We've also tried System Prefs - Display - Gather Windows but that didn't work either.
Googling suggests it's not a common problem! Any ideas?
Thanks!Troubleshooting 101: Replace, or "trash" your InDesign preferences

Finder disappears resp. not visible. When swiping can see finder but not able to click on it! this is new since I installed Lion
I was having this issue also. Press Command-option-esc and relaunch Finder. Hope this helps.

File dates not updated in finder window (Mozilla only)
OK, folks - here's a real puzzler for you. I'm using Mozilla 1.7.12 to maintain a simple set of web pages. When I save an HTML file with Mozilla composer, the file's modify date in the Finder window does not update consistently. (The window is in list view.)
The date does not update as long as that finder window remains in the background. Selecting the window sometimes updates one file date (but not others if I've modified multiple files). Switching to icon view sometimes updates the file dates, sometimes not. Only logging out and back in (i.e., starting a new Finder) guarantees that all dates are current. This only happens with Mozilla composer - saving files with other software results in the date in the finder window updating immediately. It seems to me this behavior is new since I updated to OSX 10.4.3, but I can't be positive.
Any bright ideas? - Andy
PowerMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.3)Is this causing any problems, or is it just a quirky behavior? For example, if you change to list view and sort by date, does it still get the dates wrong?
I'm thinking this is probably a really marginal bug, where Composer isn't telling the Finder to refresh the date as most applications do, but then, Mozilla does a lot of unMaclike things. Eventually the Finder figures out that the files have been updated though. There are probably a host of ways you can force it to update, as you've already discovered. You can also force it to update with a simple AppleScript:
tell application "Finder"
update every item of window 1
end tell
This tells the Finder to update everything in the frontmost window to match what's on the disk. -
Mail messages window disappear when searching
Hello,
I'm using Mail 8.0 on OS X 10.10 (14A389). With French language and localisation. This is something I already noticed in Public Beta.
I have my Sent folder selected (maybe it would happen with another). I start typing something in the search box. Then the whole main messages window disappear immediately. But Mail thinks it's still visible. Even search suggestions continues to show. Typing cmd+0 to hide/show the messages window does not help.
I have to restart Mail to get my messages window back.
This happens randomly. After restarting Mail I can search as usual without the window disappearing. But sometimes later it will happen again.
Anyone encounters this too? Is this known from Apple? Any better temporary workaround than restarting Mail?It still happens and it really gets boring. I have Mail 8.0 (1990.1). It happens from any folder selected: Inbox, Sent, Smart Inboxes...
How could such a bug remain undetected and not fixed asap? Maybe it's a plot from Apple to get us to ditch Mail and instead buy Unibox, Sparrow or Airmail from the Mac App Store so they get more $$$ commissions? -
Finder window closes as soon as it opens
I have some recovered data that has been giving me problems. After copying the folder back to a rebuilt MBP, the finder window closes immediately upon opening that folder. Any ideas on what exactly is corrupt or forcing this window to close?
MBP 17, 10.8.2I guess if this were happening to me, I would suspect that one or more files in that folder is sufficiently corrupted to kill the Finder. I would create a new folder and, using Terminal and its mv command, move files one by one into the new folder, testing to see if the original folder can be opened after each step. Others may have better plans....

Why am I having folders disappear in my Finder windows?
I just created some new folders in my Finder window and when I did, many preexisting folders disappeared! I lost a lot of information and want to know if there is a way to get them back!
Have you tried to search for the folders with Spotlight? If Spotlight doesn't turn up any results try looking for them with EasyFind. It doesn't depend on Spotlight's indexing to find files/folders.
If EasyFind doesn't show your folders use Disk Utility to verify your disk. Also check free disk space to make sure you have a minimum of 20% free space. If Disk Utility's Verify finds errors it is very important to back up before attempting to repair your startup drive. Don't use the disk for anything else until you are backed up because that might overwrite your data that you can't find.
Then boot from Lion's recovery partition by holding down Command-R immediately after you hear the startup chime. Don't release the keys until you see the Apple logo and spinning gear. Alternatively, you can hold down the option key in a similar fashion and select the recovery partition. Select Disk Utility and use the First Aid tab to repair your startup disk. It may take more than one pass to repair so repeat the repair process until Disk Utility says the disk is OK. Boot normally and see if you can now find your files. -
I can not attach any files to email or Facebook. When I go to "browse" the window comes up and disappears immediately. I updated browser and Adobe Flash. Restarted computer and zapped pram. any ideas? Please help!
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only Guest login created by Find My Mac.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
My user folder has suddenly disappeared from my hard drive though if I do a find for it it comes up as still being there with all its data. Can drag a duplicate copy from the find window back onto the hard drive but don't want two copies there with one of them hidden. Any suggestions anyone?
Did you update to 10.9.3?
If you did then update to iTunes 11.2.1.
That is the fix for that problem.

Ever since I've upgraded to Mountain Lion, my icons in any finder window have disappeared.
Any ideas?Solution for me found here:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/19048722?ac_cid=tw123456#19048722 -
The other day I was working on my iMac when the screen all of a sudden froze. iTunes was playing and continued to play, but I could not do anything. This has happened before, so I didn't panick, but just did a hard reset. I was then prompted to recover my computer from my external harddrive/time machine. This took about 10 hours (over firewire). Since then the computer works again, but the Finder window when open as well as the icons on my desktop are constantly flashing or blinking (more like periodically disappearing and reappearing) when I'm in the Finder, I'm then brought back to the previous folder I was in when it reappears.
I read that this might have to do with Stuffit, which I deleted. I also deleted the Project 179 from Canon, as it was the last program I installed on the day that the computer went glitchy. I also tried both of these:
1. click on "spotlight" on the top right corner of your desktop.
2. type "terminal" (without the quotation marks) and open it.
3. when the terminal opens, type "cd desktop" and hit enter.
4. type "rm -rf .DS_Store" and enter
5. type "exit" and enter
If it doesn't work try the follow:
1. click on "spotlight" on the top right corner of your desktop.
2. type "terminal" (without the quotation marks) and open it.
3. when the terminal opens, type "sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/" (This will empty your trash) and enter
4. type your administrator password. As you type, you will not see any character on the screen. Just type it and hit enter. (If you left your password blank, you have to make one by going to system preferences - users & groups - change password)
5. type "exit" and enter
Please help!Thank you Lic Davis (Emmanuel Kant) for the help. Here is the information you requested:

Mac Book Pro; Migration Assistant, Finder Windows have ? Mark Next to Search
I just bought a Mac Book Pro this weekend. I used Migration assistant and transferred everything from my Mac Book (intel core duo running Lion 10.7.3) to the Pro. I upgraded the Mac Book to Lion via the App Store prior to getting the Mac Book Pro. Had some problems migrating, but everything transferred (finally). Now I see a ? mark in all my finder windows adjacent. When I click on the question mark it says "The item cannot be found."
Applications (except those that are not supported in Lion) appear to be working fine, as well as any document files I transferred.
I repaired permissions, but the problem remains.
It is more of a "preception concern" then a real problem. I just would like to see it disappear because it is disconcerting.
ThanksI had the same problem, I solved it by turning off the firewall on both the PC and my MacBook Pro. It worked immediately after that. Hope that solves your problem too.

I have a problem on my Macbook Pro where the Mail windows disappear. Mail shows as active, and the header is visible, but I can not access any Mail window. If I click on "show all windows" from the Dock; it shows me 5 windows right now, but I can not access any of them. If I click on actions from the header; for example, new message, nothing appears on screen, but if I then click on "Show all Windows", it is visible, but not accessible. The only way I have found to resolve this issue is to close and restart Mail. Your suggestions are appreciated.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on some Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) -
Selecting shared computer closes Finder window
I have two Airs on OS 10.9.4 that have file sharing enabled and are on my wireless network. The second Air shows up in the sidebar of the Finder window under Shared as expected, but when I click on it I immediately switch back to whatever other application is open instead of that window showing "Connect as..." in the next column. Going the other direction (from the second to the first) is fine. What am I doing wrong?
To clarify (now that I've looked at it), it actually appears to relaunch the Finder since the menu bar disappears then reappears.
