Finder Window Flashes When Showing Preview Of Multimedia Files.

When Show Icon Preview is selected the finder window flashes(i.e, its gets highlighted and deactivated in a flashing manner) especially when previewing files of movies and pictures(PDF previewing is fine). The problem is there even in cover flow mode while loading the preview, and once the preview(thumnails) of files are done the finder behaves normal. When i checked the problem in another account it's working fine with out any problem in show icon preview mode, clover flow mode.I think the problem is a corrupted preference file.I tried deleting com.apple.finder.plist but its of no use...

You are using Perian?
--> Delete ~/Library/Preferences/org.perian.Perian.plist and re-login! May update the Perian tool and the flashing is gone.

  • Finder window closes when trying to preview AVI file.. cant open file.

just bought a Nikon D90 that shoots HD video. After uploading the video's I shot to my iMac I am unable to open them. Going through the finder window.. once I click on the file and it starts to work for the preview the window will just close with no explanation. If I try to open the file from the desktop it causes quicktime to crash. Even right clicking on the file and clicking 'get info' causes the info window to open and immediately close.
I've restarted the computer... tried to upload the videos again but to no avail. The file size is 117.8MB.. but I dont think that should affect it.
The videos uploaded fine to youtube.

I think it's a good idea to check with Nikon; while you're talking to them, ask what format their cameras' videos are - from what I've read, AVI is not the actual format it's recorded in, but I'm not an expert on that - see the link to the Wikipedia article:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AudioVideoInterleave
Also try to shoot another video in a lower resolution - don't process or do anything to it with the camera, just take out the SDHC card and see if that'll work. I suggested the MPEGStreamclip because if you can drag it into that app, you could immediately convert it to a .mov or .dv file and that should work with either Quicktime, iMovie, or whatever.
At this point, you also might want to consider trashing any preference file of any application you've tried using with that video just in case any of them have become corrupted.

If you have iPhoto '09, you cannot browse or restore seleted items from your backups.  See the pink box in #15 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
Mail should work, however, per the blue box there.

  • Multiple drag emails from Mail to a finder window and for it to name the files as the subject heading

    Hi
I have been using Mac's now for about 10 years and this is my first problem.
I have recently moved into an office that use PC's with a Windows server.
I have set up the network to transfer files and view the windows server and it  works fine.
I have a problem in that my colleagues on PC need to be able to view my emails which I send and receive using Mail. They therefore need to have logical title names and the date sent and ideally who to or from. I view them and archive them using Mail which is fine for me.
I understand about the archiving and copying of mailboxes but this gives every email the un-fathomable title name 9944847 etc.
I can get round the problem by dragging and dropping every email I send and receive individually and it will automatically give it a more logical title of the subject heading however the date is when it was dragged not when sent. This is a pain if I am away or forget to save an email for a day or two and then the date is inconsistent.
Is there a way to batch copy emails from Mail to a finder window and for it to name the files as the subject heading or to archive the files in a similar way so they retain the detailed information my colleagues require.
And no I can not get to all change to Mac and I don't really fancy using Outlook, Entourage or Parallels.
    Please help.
    Toby

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. If you get a warning that the file is in use when you try to empty the Trash, log out and log back in.

  • Finder Keeps crashing when opening any folders from file menu

I believed this happened after installing Mavericks.
The finder keeps crashing when attemtping to open a file in any application from the file menu.
I can open the same files by directly going to finder and opening file directly format or 'open with' > choose program.
No other functions have been affected since install.
    Thanks
    PM.

Strangely enough Maverick crashed and sent report a cple of days after this post.
The system rebooted itself but quoted an unexpected operation had caused it to close down. I can't remember the exact blurb.
Since then it seems to have reset my browsing habits with the finder. So far it has been stable.
If I have any more problems I will get back to you.
    Thanks again

  • Finder window closes when previewing video

    Hi,
When browsing through my pictures I occasionally come across videos that I've taken on my camera. In the past Finder would show me a preview panel for the currently selected video. Now my computer pauses for a moment and then closes the Finder window.
    Anybody have a solution?
    Matt
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hello,
I think I'm having the same problem, I can no longer view any of the .avi videos that i have taken with my camera. and they used to work before. It does the same thing when i try. Finder pauses for a second and then re-opens. Also, when i attempt to open the video from iPhoto, it loads Quicktime for a second and then gives me the "Quicktime has quit expectantly" routine.
Furthermore, Quicktime seems to have a hard time running any .avi files. when i attempt to open them it takes several minutes to load and the fan speeds up during this time. after it finally loads it seems to work fine.
I have tryed deleting thos two files in the finder prefs. but it still does not work. any help would be great.

  • Does anyone know why my finder window resizes when I enter time machine?

Can anyone explain why my finder changes size when I enter time machine? I'm pretty sure this didn't happen on Snow Leopard but it does since I installed Lion. It's only a small glitch but it's rather annoying since I have positioned and resized the finder window on my desktop to the place I want it - in the centre of the screen and showing all the folders in my sidebar list. When I enter time machine the finder window becomes shorter, therefore not showing all the sidebar folders. I wouldn't mind if when I exit time machine it reverts back to the way it was but it doesn't so I have to resize over again!
    Anyone know why this happenes?

Take a snapshot of this issue and send it to Apple. I think it may be a small glitch.

  • Finder window icons not showing

In the main part of my finder window when I am in column view, the icons for each individual file are not showing. The file name is there as is the extension (if I go into preferences and enable it). I am concerned as-although in itself it is merely an aesthetic thing-I fear it could be the symptom of something more serious. Thus far I have repaired disk permissions but that is about the extent of repair jobs that I can do.
Thanks in advance if you can help.

This could possibly be related to changing the "view options" - mine seem to have corrected itself when I right clicked > show view options and then changed some minor settings - think I changed it to last view and then clicked "Use as defaults" - seemed to work. But this wasn't due to changing it to list view as the icons were also missing as soon as I changed to the different view - just seemed to work when I clicked "Use as defaults" and then they appeared when I open and closed the finder. Hope it works anyway.

  • Why does a Finder window open when I start my computer?

It's been doing this for a while, and I find it highly annoying. If I want a Finder window, I'll open one. I believe it began with Lion. I have looked in the Finder preferences and system preferences to try to disable this, but I see no option to do it. How can I make this unwanted behavior stop?

Be sure that you have closed any Finder window before shutting down. Any windows left open will re-open when you restart.
Also check in your Login Items in Users & Groups Preferences.
In which directory does the Finder window open?
Lastly, check your system logs for an explanation. They should show why it is opening. Usually it is some other program that starts on boot and requires the Finder to open.

  • Finder Window closes when File is Deleted in 10.6 Server

I'm running OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) on an XServe serving 50 Mac Pros. I work with two finder windows open in column view with no side bar. This allows me to navigate and move files from any of 50 computers I have mounted to my server to another computer.
If there is a folder on the Desktop of one of the many computers I'm connected to, and it's the only thing on that Desktop of that computer, when I delete the folder the finder window I deleted the file from closes. In 10.5 my two windows would remain open no matter what I deleted. If there are other things on the Desktop the finder window will stay open when I delete any of the files, unless I delete them all and then the window will close.
Also if a drive is mounted and I unmount the drive in column view, this will close my finder window as well, even though all my other computers are still mounted in that window. In Leopard (10.5), if I unmounted a drive or deleted files off any computer mounted to my server, that window would remain open.
Furthermore, in column view with a side bar, when I delete the only folder on a computer's Desktop my finder window will not close, but it will kick me back to the side bar instead of leaving me on the desktop of the computer I was deleting the file off of. This is just about annoying as having the window close, because I still have to navigate back to the computer I was working on.
I think it's just a new way 10.6 handles this stuff. It seems if there is nothing left in a folder (such as a Desktop) then Snow Leopard assumes you don't need that window open and closes it. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

By the way, I'm running Snow Leopard Server, not simply Snow Leopard.

  • Finder window no longer shows files info (number of files, size etc.) at bottom

OK, I don't care for those who think this is an "improvement" unless you can share back to me how, at a glance, can I now look at a finder window and know how many files are in it. Sure, when there are 4 files that's easy, but keeping multiple cloned folders and drives a "quick look" is helpful. It's minimal to remove that bar, I get it, but not helpful if it hampers using the interface itself. Any one know how to turn it back on, implement it etc.?
    thanks

Thanks Barney... Kinda a "duh" moment. Thanks again for your help - maybe if I'd thought it through more (I was looking in finder preferences, not window options) I would have found it. Taking up Lion on first week out is kinda like being forced on a date you're not so sure about going on and it takes a while to "get comfortable". Appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. Now if we can just ditch these video artifacts.... Cheers.

  • Finder window flashing

When I click on the music, HD, and photos category in my finder window, the entire window flickers. I ran a hardware test, and everything came up fine. This problem seems to gradually be getting worse.

    Nobody had this problem ?

  • Finder window freezing when attempting to find...

I have a fresh install of 10.5.8 client on a PPC-based G5 tower. Having an odd issue where, if I open a new Finder window and do a find (command-f), the window gets "stuck" (doesn't change to the "find"-based window, gets stuck at whatever it was when I hit command-f). The rest of the desktop and computer responds as normal, it's just that single window that gets stuck — it's almost like it the desktop/GUI won't update the drawing of just that window. I can open new Finder windows and do everything else — but the only way to get rid of the stuck window is to kill Finder and let is restart.
I've tried re-applying te 10.5.8 combo updater, created a new admin user, etc. — all the standard troubleshooting stuff. Going to continue working this out, but wondering if anyone else has every experienced this?
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

Hi Kristin, not seen this single Finder window problem before.
You've already covered most things with what you've done.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
    Reboot, test again.

  • Finder window opens when user logs in

I apologize if this has been answered previously - I can't find anything on this topic.
Every time a user logs in to one of my eMacs - OS 10.4.10 (whether it be a local or network user) a new finder window opens that displays the users home. I would like this window to stop opening. I've read some responses that say to close the window then log out and the window should be gone when you log back in. That is not the case. I thought this solution my work on my local users but it doesn't work for either type of user.
I'm trying to avoid writing a script to close the window. I'd like the window to just stop opening in the first place. I tried editing the finder.plist file and I can change what the window opens to, but I can't "turn off" the actual opening of the window.
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I do not have anything checked in the login items. This is happening for both local and network accounts. I'm more concerned about this issue for my network users.
I've discovered that the problem seems to have something to do with a script I had running via a login hook. Is there any way to run a script when a network user logs in without adding it to a login hook?
We have a program on our eMacs that resets the computer back t o its original state every time the computer is restarted. For this reason network user profiles are never stored on the eMac they are recreated from the default user template every time a user logs in.
Maybe this extra information will help!
    Thanks!

  • Items in Finder window will not show alphabetically while in columns view

I am running a Mac Pro Yosemite 10.10.1
a couple of weeks ago I had some kind of glitch since then it takes a long time to save items having a continuous spinning beach ball.
Also in the Finder window items will no longer listed alphabetically while in columns view  they list fine in the other views.
Is there an easy way to fix or  could I fix it by reinstalling the operating system?

    Hi tundrabob,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like Finder takes a while to save and you need to sort a window. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.
