Finder window question mark

Hello - I inadvertently slid a Skype icon to my finder window top border and when I deleted Skype from system the icon began appearing as a question mark (?) ... how do I delete the question mark from my finder window top border?
Thanks in advance.

thanks!!!
I almost didn't notice it any more, and I'm glad to resolve that vague nagging question (mark)!

  • Flashing Finder Icon/ Question Mark on Boot

Today I left my 1.33ghz G4 Mac Mini turned on whilst I went to the shop.
When I came back i found it eith a flashing finder icon/ question mark.
I restarted it and it booted up a grey screen, then after a while the flashing finder icon/question mark.
I have tried putting in the OSX install disc and holding down the C key to start up using the CD and nothing happen, all I get is the same grey screen and flashing icon.
I have also tried pressing the X key, and holding it down and restarting to get up the startup disk menu, but again nothing.
Pressing 'option' key during start up only gets me a blue background with refresh button on the left and right arrow on the right - with no Boot Up CD or HDD Icon.
I have also tried resetting the PRAM, it resets, but after it hasn't solved my problem, as i am back to square one with the boot screen and icon.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    big.bad.ben

I would agree with DP that using a wired keyboard will give better results when holding down the C key. The timing of holding down the C key is tricky, and you might have to experiment with it.
The question mark means that the Mini can't find a bootable disk. Usually this is because the internal hard drive has enough directory damage that it is not bootable. Usually this can be fixed by reformatting the internal drive or replacing it.
But if you truly can't boot from the install CD, that suggests a more serious problem with the logic board or RAM memory.
When you power-up the mini, do you get a series of beeps or light flashes? The pattern of such beeps/flashes is a diagnostic aid to determine what might be wrong. Report back with what pattern you observe.
Be sure to give the install CD some more tries, varying the timing of holding down the C key. Usually you want to do it right after the startup chime.

  • I have a 2005 g5 2.5 2g ram will not boot up ,blue screen with folder with finder icon question mark. have tried to boot from dvd disc by holding down ckey but all i get is apple logo and fans start running really fast.have tried hard drive in identcal g5

tried hard drive in another g5 but with the same result.can anybody suggest what might be wrong

had the same result on other g5 blue screen finder folder with question mark. i put the hard drive in the bottom bay of my g5 after and ran disk repair said disk ok .reparaired permissions tried hard drive in top bay again but with same result.

  • Can t find the question mark on the keyboard

    hi
I ve just installed tiger 2 days ago and I can t type the question mark any more.. it gives me either this ^ (with shift) or § (with alt)..
    any ideas..

    gallinette:
Boot from the Tiger install disk.
    Go to Utilities menu.
    Launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in sidebar.
Select First Aid tab in main panel.
    Click or Repair disk button.
If DU reports disk needs no repairs, quit DU.
If DU reports errors, click Repair again and again until DU reports disk repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
In this case, because of your keys being out of order, I believe Disk Warrior will do a better job.
While booted from internal HDD go to Home > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
    Launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in sidebar.
Select First Aid tab in main panel.
Click or Repair Disk Permissiions button.
    Quit DU.
Please don't hesitate to post back with further questions or comments, or to report on how procedure worked for you.
    Good luck.

  • Clamshell, the famous Finder and Question mark

can anybody give me some help here. my brilliant cousin was given this laptop, (apple clamshell ibook) he doesn't know much about computers so what he did was go into the hard drive and erased EVERYTHING! the reason he erased it all was because there was lots of *********** from the previous owner and it contained some sort of virus...
now i get this error message. i've tried resetting the pram and all. anyone have any suggestions?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Do you know which version of the OS it was running when he erased it? What method did he use to erase it?
What OS CDs does he have in order to attempt a restore or install?
You may want to try posting in the iBook (colors) Forum, also.
You have posted in the iBook G3 (Dual USB) Forum (the forum for the first all-white iBooks).

  • Flashing question mark and finder upon start up of power mac G4

    Hi
I recently bought a powermac g4 which had a new un formatted hard drive in, upon turning the computer on it had the flashing finder and question mark.
i tried formatting the drive using my macbook which resulted in, upon turning the computer on a grey screen appeared with the apple logo then white texts behind, stating "panic (CPU O caller) and then alot of other text which ends at the bottom of the screen with panic:we are hanging here
I posted this problem in another question a few days ago and was told i needed disks to boot the computer, due to a intel mac not being able to boot a PPC mac so i bought a copy of snow leopard
so i erased the drive using disk utility, making it un formatted again
But when trying to use the disks i inserted them holding down the C key upon start up
but the computer just has the finder and question mark symbol again
    Thank you for your time

If it's the G4 Mirrored Drive Doors (MDD) in your signature, you've done well to get one. If you can live with the noise, they're a real workhorse - they were a real beast 10 years ago. I still have mine, bought from new the day they came out.
So you're going to need either:
the original discs (2 install DVDs and 4 restore CDs, and iMovie2 and AHT, or
    Mac OS X 10.3 retail
    Mac OS X 10.4 retail
    Mac OS X 10.5 retail
If you want OS9 on it you're going to need the original discs. You could head over to the Macintosh Garden forums (use google) and ask there, a lot of MDD owners over there, always looking out for more MDDs to buy and preserve and original discs for them too. There may be someone in your state / region there who may be able to assist with the original discs.
If you want OSX 10.3, 10.4 or 10.5 eBay or similar may be your best bet. A little tip I used for getting the original OS discs when I missed them - individually the discs can be expensive, particularly OSX 10.4 and 10.5 - I buy mine bundled with a Mac when it's sold locally, seems to keep the price down if it's bundled with an old Mac that would have $50  shipping. So I pick up the Mac, keep it and seel the OS if I don't want it, for more than I paid for both. Just perserverence on eBay/ etc.

  • Is there a question mark sticker?

Hi! I am trying to create my own Sackboy costume of the Riddler from DC comics, and I was wondering, are there any stickers in the shape of a question mark? I also could use one for the levels too. Where can I find a question mark sticker if there is one, or how can I unlock one?   If there isn't one for LBP3, I have LBP2 as well. Thank you! - Justin

I haven't looked in LBP3, but I'm fairly certain there is not one from LBP1 or 2. I seem to remember making one myself a while back. Use a piece of sticker panel to make the shape, then take a photo and you have your own custom sticker.

  • Startup Failure (Blinking Question Mark) and more.....

    Hi,
I have a G4 iBook that has a problem, with the hard drive I think, but I want to see if anyone has run into this problem. A search of the board didn't yeild much. Anyway, what happens is if I boot the iBook up it will get to a small folder icon with a flashing question mark and mac face. I realize this is an indicator that the startup drive isn't found. If I pinch the lower left corner during a startup then the iBook boots properly. Has anyone seen this behavior before?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Hi love, I had this problem last october. When I bought my Mac it was an ex-display model with a new hard drive (August 2004). Last October 2006 I restarted my mac only for it to come up with the flashy finder folder / question mark. I was told that this means the Mac can't access the OS - apparently (not gospel!) this means that either your OS is being a bum or your hard drive has died, meaning that your mac can't access the OS 'cos obviously it's stored on your hard drive. I'm not sure how much of that is correct, however when I sent it off for repair, it came back with a new hard drive. I'd also like to say at this point that the Hardware test disk said my Hard Drive was OK but that when I connected my Mac to another Mac via firewire to try and retreive my data it could not access the hard disk.
Sorry to break the bad news to you but it's very very likely you'll need a new hard drive. I am suffering at the moment 'cos my hard drive died again about 3 weeks ago, I got it back 10 days ago and it's gone again now. I have a week before I finish my degree and all my assignments were on there! (Naturally the ones I'd done this week hadn't been backed up yet!)
Good luck with your Mac, let us know how it goes

  • Question Mark in Finder Window

Just bought a new mac book and im noticing something odd. When I open the finder window there is a "?" mark at the top of the window located between the button with the "gear" on it to create a new folder and between the 4 view buttons. When I click it I get a pop-up box with the Finder icon in it that says "the item cannot be found." My Mac Mini does not have this. Any thoughts as to what this means? Im relatively new to Mac so please forgive me if this is something I should know.

    newtxmgf,
If you're running Leopard, that's where the Quick Look button should be.
In the Finder, choose View>Customize Toolbar and see if you can drag the Quick Look button up there and get rid of the question mark.

Are you sure you have a PowerMac? They can't run Mac OS 10.6.8. Maybe a Mac Pro instead?
Can you post a screen shot of that portion of the screeen for us to review? Does the question mark replace the Apple that's at the left end of the menubar?

  • BIG Question Mark in Finder Windows

My Hard drive Finder Windows (any programme) OS 10.4.6.
are suddenly showing a large Question Mark between the 'view buttons' and the 'action wheel icon'.
When 'clicked' the question mark gives a message "The Item Cannot be Found".
All items in each individual folder within the window open normally.
Why is this suddenly happening, and can I get rid of the Question Mark somehow.?
    Many thanks.

Before there was a "sidebar", OS X Finder had a "toolbar" where a user could drag arbitrary items (files, folders, applications) for quick one-click access. Although it may not be obvious with the brushed metal finish, "Finder" windows still retain this function.
However, if the original item to which the toolbar shortcut points is deleted or otherwise becomes inaccessible, its icon will be replaced with a question mark (the same thing happens with "Dock" icons).
The shortcuts can be removed from the window by holding down the "⌘" key and dragging the icons off the toolbar.

  • Question Mark in Finder Windows

All of my Finder windows have a large question mark to the right of the Action icon. When I click on it I get a message saying the item can't be found. What is this?

I also got this reply from another board:
"That would be a file or folder that you had previously dragged to that area. Things that you drag there are like bookmarks, pointing to the actual file or folder. If you have a question mark, that means that the original file or folder has been deleted. So you should just hold down the Command key and then drag that question mark off of that area and it will disappear in a puff of smoke."

  • Question marks in Finder window

When I open a finder window in my spouse's new Mac mini (10.5.4), there are two question marks in a row that appear just to the right of the Action drop down. When clicked on, a dialog pops up saying "The item cannot be found"

hold down the command key and drag the question marks off the toolbar.

  • Why the question mark on all open windows while in the Finder?

I am running OS X version 10.10 on an iMac and a MBP with Retina display. While in the finder every open window has a large question mark displayed. Why is this? What might be the he problem? What can be done to correct the issue?
    Thanks in advance!

Where is it displayed? Post an image here:
To post screen shot do this:
Press COMMAND-SHIFT-4 which will change the cursor to crosshairs.
Hold down the mouse button and use the crosshairs to select the part of the screen you wish to capture.
Release the button and the image will be saved to your Desktop.
Click on the Camera icon in the toolbar of the forum message editor.
Drag the image onto the Choose File button and click on the Insert button.
No guarantee anyone will see it given how the forum has been, but if it is then a picture is worth a thousand words.
