Finder Window Size Issues (not resizing properly)

everytime I open a window in the finder it opens and I drag to resize and then close. I reopen the folder and its size is wrong not what I just resized to. This happens on every finder window not opening how I resized it. Any clues?

This has been pet peeve of mine for years. Apple invented windows, but it seems to be the only developer which is incapable of programming the operation of this basic interface correctly. Even Microsoft Windoze got this right when they stole the concept. When you hit the resize button in a Microsoft application the window does the same thing - every time, while every Macintosh application acts differently when you click the green button...very annoying, to say the least.

The installer should have gone into your Apple Software Update folder:

  • Finder Window Sizes and View Options

In an earlier message under Mac OS X Panther it was recommended that I post a new message in the AppleScript forum.
I'm looking for a way to automate the repetitive task of resizing Finder windows and resetting view options. For example resetting a hundred folders to the same window size and screen position with the same view options. This requires manually adjusting each window one by one.
A solution could be an AppleScript that would automate this task.
The following is the earlier message:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1283081#1283081
I mistakenly deleted all the preference files for the Finder window options on my 17 inch PowerBook (.DS_Store Files).
This has returned all Finder windows to default settings for window sizes and view options.
I use custom widow sizes for all my folders that nicely fit the 17 inch screen on my PowerBook, leaving enough desktop space on the right for the hard drive icons and the Dock that I always keep vertical on the right.
I have a 12 inch PowerBook as well. And it has it's own custom window size that fits it's much smaller screen. It has always been a complaint of mine to have to manually reset windows whenever I needed to transfer folders with Bluetooth file exchange.
Resetting Finder window sizes and view option has always been a time consuming problem. Now to have to do it over again for hundreds of windows is a huge task that is way to manual.
The Finder is customizable. There must be a way to set the options for one window and be able to use those adjustments for other windows without having to re adjust each setting manually.
There was an application called Finder Window Manager. Maybe someone knows of another application that can do this of task or another way around this issue.

I think if you repost this to the AppleScript link, someone there will have a solution for you (in the form of an applescript that you can run)...

Give it a shot (I'm not clever enough to give you a good script yet, but someone there will be!)

  • How to change Default Finder Windows Size?

    Hi all:
New Finder windows show Macintosh HD and there is no problem in keeping the size or view options every time I open a new window (command + N).
I can change "New Finder windows show" to another folder and works just as well.
But when I open a folder in a new window (double click on an icon folder) the size of the window is very small and different from the window displayed by using command + N.
Finder saves and applies default view options to all windows without a problem, but not the default size or in other words:
default windows size is different from new finder windows size.
In Snow Leopard I could change default size of all windows holding down the Shift key while dragging and changing the size but in Mountain Lion it does not work.
I have also deleted all files .DS_Store but neither works.
I searched a lot but can not find a solution to this problem.
    Thanks.

As far as New Finder Windows (command+N) are concerned, there's no problem.
All other folder's Finder Windows I have not modified manually are displayed with the default size shown in the attached image. That is the window size that I want to modify.
    Thanks.

  • I've been using FCP 7 on my iMac for quite some time with great success.  Lately I created a new project and the browser window does not format properly (it's O.K. for previously created projects). The effects window is also not displaying properly.

Help! My browser window is suddenly not formatting properly. (losing browser formatting, glitch, bug)  I'm using FCP 7 on an iMac with OS X 10.8.5 and have been successfully doing so for a couple of years.  I fear my Final Cut Pro is corrupt and I have to re-install. Anyone ever see this problem? Old projects display and behave fine in the browser, but any new project I create, totally loses the formatting in the browser and the browser also does not display the "effects" window properly anymore. (see below)

YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER!  I reinstalled the program and everything. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! MY HERO!!!

  • How do I get to my bookmarks in my bookmarks toolbar that do not show because my window size does not allow them to show?

In the 3.x versions of Firefox there was an area after your last bookmark in the bookmark toolbar where you you could click and access all your bookmarks in the toolbar if the window size was not big enough to show them all.
Now in 4.o all that shows are the bookmarks in the toolbar that fit in the window size. So if I have my browser window set to 900 pixels I can only see the bookmarks in the toolbar that fit in that area and I have no way of getting access to the ones that are not showing unless I make my window bigger. But even then my window can only get so large because of my monitor size at which point I can not access any of the other sites in the bookmark toolbar.
Am I missing something or is there a glitch in the 4.0 version?

    Hi
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately there is no chevron sign after the last bookmark nor after the "Bookmarks" text that if clicked takes me to all my regular bookmarks and oddly does not even list my Bookmarks Toolbar folder. If I want to get into my bookmarks toolbar folder I have to the top menu and click "Bookmarks" next to the "History" link and then navigate to the Bookmarks Toolbar folder. Something odd is definitely going on and it's getting annoying.
Any suggestions welcome. I attached a screen shot so you can see.

  • Set finder window size default

How can I set the default finder window size?  I've got a new iMac and the finder window always opens small.  I want it a lot bigger.  Interestingly, on my wife's old iMAc and my MBA (both running OS X 10.8.3, same as new iMac) the finder windows open to a much bigger size.

it seems Finder opens to Applications.  Sometimes the folder is the  same size as the as the last one I closed.  Other times it is tiny.  I can't seem to spy a pattern.

  • Finder windows size and position etc.  on clients' machines

How to configure server's finder windows size and position etc. are on clients' machines so that they persist? Thank you!
PS: If this has already been discussed, please refer to the thread. Sorry for double post in that case.

Try connecting to the Share as the Server Admin, make your window the size and position you want and logout again.

  • Finder window size and location not remembered

    I have OS X 10.10 installed.
When I press Cmd/shift/H to open a finder window showing my home folder I get the default location and size for the window.  I resize and relocated the window and close it.  When I press that key combination again, the window is now showing the new size and location I previous set.  Unfortunately, when I restart the computer, this modification is lost and when I press that key combination the window opens with the default size and location.
I have used the key combination of Cmd/Shift/A to open a finder window showing Applications and Cmd/Shift/U to open a finder window showing the Utilities folder.  I have been successful in resizing and relocating these windows, and having the system remember my modifications after a restart.  It appears to only be the Cmd/Shift/H combination that is faulty.
Any ideas how to fix this problem?

    Paddster7,
You could try trashing the hidden file inside the folder that stores some of its positioning and size settings.
    To show your hidden files.
Launch ( Terminal ) -> Paste in the following ( defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean true ; killall Finder ) -> Press Return.
Open the ( Offending Folder ) -> Delete ( .DS_Store ) -> Restart -> Move folder how you want to to stay -> Restart -> Did it stay?
To reverse your hidden files back to hidden.
Launch ( Terminal ) -> Paste in the following ( defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean false ; killall Finder ) -> Press Return.

  • Finder window size not saved when cmd+click

Hi. I'm not sure if anyone else is having this problem. I look through the forum but didn't find it posted.
I re-sized my finder to a certain size and have done the same to some other folder such that they are basically all different sizes. However, at some point, if I cmd+double click a folder to open it, the window size is reverted back to that of my home folder. I know this didn't happen in 10.5 and may have to do with the .DS_Store file. Anyways, it's an annoyance and any help would be appreciated. THanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Have you tried to repair your hard drive using Disk Utility? You will need to boot from your install disc, navigate to Disk Utility, and then select your hard drive and then "Repair Disk". Repair it until there is nothing left to repair.
Also, be sure you have adequate free space on your hard drive. 15% at least.
How old is your Mac, and does it still have the original hard drive? Hard drives typically have an average useful life of 3-5 years, and if yours is getting into this range (or even if it isn't), the hard drive could be beginning to fail.
To do a detailed check on the physical health of your hard drive, download and run this utility:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
You can download the demo and run it several times for free.
    Good luck!

  • Windows 7 gadgets not displaying properly. Black squares or don't appear at all with blue exclamation marks next to it.

My gadgets on Windows 7 have suddenly stopped working properly since 2 days ago. I have tried:
    System restore
    UAC is ON
    cmd scannow (no results),
tried the registry thing, didn't work either.
    How to fix this?
    That's how it looks...
    http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a360/Katjushka_/fuckedgadgets.jpg

I do not personally recommend the alternate work-around of deleting any registry keys and/or reducing any of your internet security zones.  I have found fixes to it in a more secure way below, as I consolidated and cleaned up countless snips from many
forums all over the place (cited sources of where I could remember I found the concepts); Here's my research notes: full disclaimers, hold me harmless, and always backup first!
    IE11 BUG:
This bug in the public release version of Internet Explorer 11 (aka IE 11 aka IE11 RTM gold release) causes Windows 7 Gadgets to bug out.
Specifically, with IE11 installed on Windows 7, due to a bug in IE11, increasing DPI past 110% triggers SOME of the Gadgets to glitch, bug out, completely disappear, etc.  This bug can be worked-around and "fixed" by modifying its Sidebar gadget.xml
    <autoscaleDPI>...  described in detail below.
This bug is irrelevant to Windows 8 / 8.1 because Microsoft removed the beloved Gadgets entirely in Win8 due to so many third-party evilware writers embedding malware into their "free" downloaded Gadgets (note to the best of my current knowledge,
using the standard Microsoft Gadgets included with Windows 7 are all perfectly safe).
To reiterate, notice the following Microsoft article is only talking about potential malware in third-party downloaded Gadgets, and specifically I do NOT see where it mentions any problems using any of the official Microsoft build-in Windows 7 gadgets, cited
    from:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/dn261332
    BUG FIX:
Option 1: Set DPI back to 100% Smaller Fonts (default) or maximum 110% and the Gadgets come back to life and work fine upon relog.
Option 2: If you need greater than 110% DPI, and want Gadgets to work, then... For each broken Gadget, modify its protected file:  gadget.xml   (as detailed below).
FIRST, TEMPORARILY CHANGE DPI BACK TO 100% (DEFAULT) JUST SO YOU CAN SEE THE HIDDEN/GLITCHED GADGETS IN ORDER TO FIX THEM.
Note as a side-effect, after the "fixed" Gadgets in question come back they may look smaller in comparison with the ones that were not affected by the DPI bug (because this fix locks their DPI at default 100% whereas your others are dynamically changed).
    Located in:  C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets
Inside that folder, find the glitched Gadget you want to fix, go into its specific folder, and edit its gadget.xml, Remove the following tag completely:
    <autoscaleDPI><!--_locComment_text="{Locked}"-->true</autoscaleDPI>
Deleting that tag from the gadget.xml file resolves the issue even if the DPI is set to 125%. Setting the tag to allow autoscale doesn't help.  BE CAREFUL not to leave a blank line!
    Concepts:
    1. Make backup of effected gadget.xml somewhere
    2. Task Manager -> End Process of "sidebar.exe" to unlock all Gadget's files
    3. Take temporary ownership and give yourself RW permission to modify Gadget's files
    4. Put all Gadget file ownership and RW permissions back to "TrustedInstaller" for security
    5. Change DPI and relog to relaunch Gadgets
    Details:
From Security Tab in Properties of file you want to change >>Click Advanced >>Select Owner >>Click Edit >>Click Other users or Groups >>Click Advanced >>Click Find Now, make yourself owner, then add write access for yourself.
Launch NOTEPAD or similar editor as ADMIN, to modify the gadget.xml file (the folder structure itself is still permissions-protected, but I strongly suggest you leave that alone and just use admin for editing this one file this one time)
Put Ownership and all permissions back to what they were (First, set read-only for everyone EXCEPT leave RW alone for the TrustedInstaller service, and THEN set Owner back to TrustedInstaller).
NOTE: TrustedInstaller does not exist in the "visible" users and groups as it runs as an NT Service.  Don't panic. To restore its special ownership:
Right mouse button click on the file and choose Properties
        Click Security tab
        Click Advanced button
        Click Owner tab
        Click Edit button
Click Other User or Group and type in:  NT SERVICE\TrustedInstaller
Search and click Ok on all dialogs until all property dialogs are closed etc.
    Cited from http://blogs.msdn.com/irenak/archive/2007/01/30/sysk-277-how-to-bring-back-the-trustedinstaller.aspx
Double-confirm you set all regular users and groups permissions are reverted defaults back to what they were (read-only), and the *ONLY* Owner/RW is TrustedInstalled, to lock it back down for security reasons! E.G. to avoid future vulnerability!
    To test:
I fixed my Clock gadget.xml but left the Calendar alone.  Changed DPI to 125% and relog off/on and notice Clock now works, but yes it looks slightly smaller than the working Calendar Gadget which isn't effected by this bug.  Repeat process for Calender
if you want it smaller to match, but it works fine bigger. Repeat this process for all of your favorite broken Gadgets using IE11 on Windows 7.
    Notes:
1.) Personally I view this as a work-around not a true fix, but considering Microsoft officially discontinued Gadgets as mentioned earlier, it's possible this bug may take a very long time, if ever, to be officially fixed.
2.) IE11 also bugs out a lot of other things such as Outlook 2003 spellcheck, and other general software compatibility issues, especially in Windows 7, so it's probable that some or all of IE11's bugs should be eventually fixed in the future - thereby as a
side effect may also officially fix Gadgets some day too.
3.) Other concepts cited here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/ie/en-US/448f9665-c043-48d2-9049-b74131bab7b1/gadgets-not-working-with-ie11-win7-pro-sp1-not-win81-preview?forum=iewebdevelopment
    Good luck!

  • Finder window size reverts to default after restart

My Finder window doesn't remember the last size I set it to after a restart.
Mountain Lion was a downgrade - there are many things about Snow Leopard that were better...but Jaguar was the best.  Powerbook G4 was pure freedom all the way through Tiger.
    #googlingLinuxDistros

For rants: File a bug report with Apple.
For the Finder window issue, it appears that all of you .DS_Store files are corrupted. Step one is to remove them all.  To delete the .DS_Store files, run this in the Terminal app:
    sudo find / -name ".DS_Store"  -exec rm {} \;</
At the Password: prompt, carefully enter your admin password, since nothing shows up on the screen, and hit the return key. When the default prompt, usually the $ sign, pops up, quit the Terminal app, restart, and open a Finder window, set it up the way you want, and click on Use as Defaults. All subsequently opened or created folders should retain that view. Do note that that only applies to icon and list view.

  • How to keep default Finder window size and location from Mac server

Working in an office of three people.  Mac mini server (not sure of the OS; I think it's Snow Leopard).  We each use iMacs with Mavericks.  I have my default new Finder window set to open "customers" folder, which resides on the server, in a specific orientation.  If either of my co-workers opens "customers" and resizes that window on their machines, it retains that size & location when I open it again on my machine (as I'm sure it does to them after I "fix" my own window).
Is there any way to change this so that one's own machine will remember the window prefs?  I mean, we're not opening on the server itself, so in my mind it should not retain the last open position, right?
I know I could set my default folder to Home, then go to customers from the sidebar, but that almost defeats the purpose of the default folder.
    thanks in advance!!

    Hey Macdaddy,
This happens all the time with our server at work. The server window never opens in the same place twice, and it can be annoying.
There are third-party window management tools out there, but what I did was use a macro program called Keyboard Maestro (since I already owned it).
Among the many things Keyboard Maestro can do is manipulate a window. I created a macro that moves it to a specific point (in my case, the upper left corner of the screen) and then resizes it to a specific width and height in pixels. I then assigned the macro a keyboard shortcut.
Now, when I mount the server, I can use the keyboard shortcut and the window is right where I want it.
There are other programs that just move windows, and I tried a couple. But Keyboard Maestro is more elegant in my opinion, and it does a whole lot more if you choose to go that route.
    Hope this helps.

  • Finder window too big to resize

one of my finder windows was enlarged to the point where i can't make it smaller again. i can't move it far enough up out of the way to see the corner tab for changing size. suggestions?

Click the green button in the upper left corner and it will fill the screen (exactly). You can then resize from the lower right corner.

  • Finder window  "refresh" issue

Since upgrading to Mac OS X (10.4.10) on my work mac yesterday, my finder window seems to have a mind of its own.
The finder window opens at start up (which is okay) but if I minimize it or close it, it will reappear in one and a half minutes, popping up in front of whatever document I'm using. When it reappears it seems as though the contents of the desktop and the finder window are being automatically "refreshed" as the icons disappear for a split second. If I leave the finder window open on the desktop, it still refreshes every one and a half minutes--yes, I've timed it!
I've downloaded and installed the latest updates and tried to see if I could change preferences to fix the issue, but with no success.
Any ideas about how to make the finder window stay put? It's a major pain to try and work when the finder keeps kicking me out of my document every 90 seconds
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

What is happening is that the Finder is crashing, after it crashes it returns to the state it was last in, thus the reappearance of the open window where it was when you started. If you just upgraded my first guess would be some startup item that is not compatible with the system upgrade. Try holding the Shift key when you startup--I can never remember how long you need to hold it, so always keep it down until I see the splash screen with the notice at the top it is in Safe Mode. This will run a number of disk repair, cache cleaning routines, and also disable all third party startup items, as well as Apple's own startup items that are not necessary for the computer to run. Safe boot takes longer to get up and going than normal boot, so be patient. If the Finder does not crash in Safe Mode, restart normally. If the crashes resume you are going to have to disable all startup items, then add them back one at time to determine the culprit. If the Finder continues to crash, even in Safe Mode, then you can try creating a new user, log out of your regular account and in to the new user. If the new user is fine, then the problem is some file in the regular account that is causing the crashes.
