Finder window sizing in column view.
Does anyone know if it is possible for the Finder to automatically expand the view to the longest file name in column view? It is very frustrating to have to drag the little lines on the lower right to the right to resize the window manually whenever I open a document folder. I hope I am not confusing anyone but it is hard for me to describe what I mean. Why do I have to manually resize it to the length of the longest file name every time?
Thanks.
I don't think the "Finder" can be configured to resize itself automatically whenever an item with a long name appears in a given window. However, double-clicking the "little lines" (the ones that look like "||" at the base of each column separator) will cause that column to self-adjust to display the longest name. Since a double-click requires less effort than a manual drag, hopefully that will save you a little bit of frustration.
If a generally wider column is preferred, try holding down the option-key while resizing the column - all columns should be resized simultaneously in that window, and the setting should be retained as the default width.

Finder window opens with inconsistent view
Since I upgraded to Yosemite, Finder windows open with inconsistent size, position and view. After a power on a Finder window generally opens as a small, centrally-located window in Icon view even though preferences is set to always open in column view; sometimes the small window is in column view. Rarely, the first new window opens in the same size, position and view as the last one was before power off then the next one - opened using Command-N - opens as a small, central window in Icon view. In all previous versions of Mac OS, new Finder windows opened in the same size, position and view as the window I closed last on screen, even after a power off/on. Once I reset the window size, position and view to my preference, new windows generally open correctly.
Is there some setting I can change so new windows always retain the size, position and view as the last one closed?Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Finder windows sizing and alternatives
Does anyone know how to set the default width of the finder window column style to wider? It's so small I end up opening it up every time I use it.
Or does anyone know of a better file manager?
ThanksThere is a trick to setting default window size and position in the OS X "Finder" - default as in what applies to windows for which that hasn't been set before - and it is to open a new window, and without selecting anything in the window, arranging the window to you liking, then immediately closing the window.
With that in mind, try setting column width in "column view" by dragging the "resize bar" at the base of the column while holding down the "option" (⌥) key. Though it will have to be set independently, the same procedure seems to work for "column view" in eg. "Open" or "Save" dialogues as well.
I should mention that I'm on a 10.4 machine right now but haven't double checked to see if it works in "Panther" (this being the 10.3 section and all)... -
Finder Window - Date Modified Column Keeps Changing
When I open a Finder window, change the size of the "Date Modified" column then close the Finder window, the next time I open the same Finder window, the "Date Modified" column will compress the size of the column.
Why isn't Finder 10.9 maintaining my column changes?
Any assitance or insight whould be appreciated.I solved the scrunched Date Modified column header in a similar fashion but added the Date Added field, which fixed the width of both Date columns.
After doing so, I now find both Date-oriented columns display and read dynamically the actual date and time.
I'm now looking for a solution to that issue, explained here:
finder window date added date modified show date time always -
Finder: "Always open in column view"
Hi all, please, what is purpose of the check box "Always open in ... view" in Finder's folder view settings? When I uncheck it, to avoid the item in the Favorites list to open with the last used type of view, it always gets checked back. Is that expected or is that a bug?
I believe column view is not an available feature in Search function; possibly because it already shows you the individual files (rather than folders with their contents opening in another column). I prefer column view myself, but have never been able to set it in the search function.

Finder crashes in multi-column view when clicking file
Hello All,
This problem occurred recently after my powerbook refused to wake from sleep mode:
If Finder is open in multiple-column view and I select a file, Finder then disappears. I believe it has something to do w/ showing the file preview or in getting the file information. This happens w/ every file; I can still traverse directories or start programs/open files when I run Finder in icon view or single-column view.
I tried: rm -fr /Users/jacobc/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Finder.plist which had no effect.

Is there any way to set default column widths in the Finder's Column view
When my Finder windows open in column view, all the columns are always VERY wide. I have to then spend time resizing them to a managable width. Is there any way to set default column widths in the Finder's Column view?
<Re-Titled By Host>No, because you can't set a columns view default.

Finder Window closes when File is Deleted in 10.6 Server
I'm running OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) on an XServe serving 50 Mac Pros. I work with two finder windows open in column view with no side bar. This allows me to navigate and move files from any of 50 computers I have mounted to my server to another computer.
If there is a folder on the Desktop of one of the many computers I'm connected to, and it's the only thing on that Desktop of that computer, when I delete the folder the finder window I deleted the file from closes. In 10.5 my two windows would remain open no matter what I deleted. If there are other things on the Desktop the finder window will stay open when I delete any of the files, unless I delete them all and then the window will close.
Also if a drive is mounted and I unmount the drive in column view, this will close my finder window as well, even though all my other computers are still mounted in that window. In Leopard (10.5), if I unmounted a drive or deleted files off any computer mounted to my server, that window would remain open.
Furthermore, in column view with a side bar, when I delete the only folder on a computer's Desktop my finder window will not close, but it will kick me back to the side bar instead of leaving me on the desktop of the computer I was deleting the file off of. This is just about annoying as having the window close, because I still have to navigate back to the computer I was working on.
I think it's just a new way 10.6 handles this stuff. It seems if there is nothing left in a folder (such as a Desktop) then Snow Leopard assumes you don't need that window open and closes it. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.By the way, I'm running Snow Leopard Server, not simply Snow Leopard.

I have a MacBook Pro, 10.8.6. I always have my windows open in Column view. Can we set the window width to resize to it's longest file? I'm always having to manually make the width wider and it's annoying.
ThanksHi, the latest OSX is 10.7, soon to be 10.8, there is a way in Leopard/10.5 & Snow Leopard/10.6 to make finder display that...

Columns in Finder windows won't stay where I put them!
WHen I open a finder window, put in LIST VIEW, then re-size my columns - everything is good now I can do stuff. BUT WAIT! I do one thing: dragging one folder and nesting it into another and BAM! The columns re-size back to the default. This is a deal-killer for me. I cannot work like this! If there is no fix, SOrry, but goodbye apple and hello Windows.
Open window is a folder named "Photos".
It contains many sub folders: Backyard photos, front yard photos, vacation photos, etc.
It also contains a ton of image files - that I'm sorting into their respective folders.
When I drag an image file titled "Backyard sunny" into the sub-folder "Backyard photos"... the columns all snap back to their default settings. FORCING ME TO RESIZE THEM.... then I drag another photo into another folder and the same thing happens again. THIS IS A SHUTDOWN OF MY USING MAC OS. I either need to return to Mavericks, or this needs to be fixed somehow. This never happened before, and it won't happen in the future, not on my desktop. I'd hate to start asking my wife to start teaching me windows. I've been a mac person my whole computing life (since the early 1990's) and never have I run into a show-stopper like this.
My computer is NON-FUNCTIONAL if the columns won't stay where I put them! -
How do you PRINT a Finder window list view?
Hello all.
I think a long time ago in OS9, we can open a new (Finder) Window, switch to 'List' view and print the window, so that we can see all the nested folders, etc.
Can we/How do we do this in OS X? Can't seem to find a Print command...
Thanks and cheersPress the Shift, Command, and 4 keys, followed by the spacebar, click in the window, open the png on the desktop, and print that.

How can I stop the column-view finder from centering its view?
My finder is set to column-view so I can see the sub columns and easily move the files to different colums.
When I select a file in one of the lower sub solumns the view automatically shift to centerize the column, which make it difficult for me to see the head columns. Is there a way to 'lock' its view?It changes the column width automatically when I select a file in a sub column even after I adjust it to my liking...
This "centerizing" doesn't happen all the time - there are times that the columns stay the way I adjust - but I don't know what triggers this problem, thus I don't know how to stop it when it happens. -
Sharepoint will mount, but its finder window won't open.
First of all, we'll be fully switched over to Intel Macs in about three weeks, but I was wondering if anyone else has ever seen this problem:
We have a Mac OS X Server running version 10.4.11. We have a G5 running 10.4.11.
We have a hard drive on the X Server available as a share point to administrators. On the same hard drive are multiple share ponts available to various users. On this particular G5, when we mount a specific share point (we'll call it USER FILES), it shows up on the desktop, but it's Finder window will not open (it sort of looks like it tries to open but it doesn't).
On the same G5, when the encompassing hard drive share point (we'll call it OFFICE FILES) is mounted, we are able to open it and then open USER FILES on it with no problems. Of course, we can't allow this user to have an admin access to OFFICE FILES, so she can't access USER FILES this way.
As a test, using my admin access, also can not open USER FILES on this G5. Other share points on the same X Server drive (i.e. ACCOUNTING FILES) can be accessed directly and normally. It's only the USER FILES share point that is having the problem.
There are no access problems to USER FILES via any other machines on the network, be they other G5, Snow Leopard or Lion OS X systems.
The next step, was to restart the problem G5 using an external boot drive, and, following the same procdures outlined above, found the same problem exists. Based on that, I've pretty much ruled out the system software as the culprit.
Next was to zap the PRAM. Still no luck. Restarting in safe mode also produced no positive result.
Funny thing is, the drive is mounting on the Desktop and is accessible via the hierarchical filing system, for instance, we are able to open Microsft Word documents on USER FILES via the File Menu Open command. So all is not lost -- we've got a work around. It's just that it would be nice to fix the problem (I don't even care what's causing it , if I can just fix it).
Any suggestions?Yes, the user does have R&W privelages.
Here's some new info: The problem has now cropped up on two additional users machines.
Additional steps that have been taken: We've taken the server off line and run Disk Utiity's Repair Disk and Repair Permissions on the server startup and the hard drive in question. This produced no change in the results.
Eureka! How's this for odd? The problem only seems to occur if the finder window is set to view in the icon mode. When it's opened in list or column view it seems to open up fine.
I suppose we can let it go with this work around, but my gut says there may be some underlying problem. -
Maintaining the column widths in Columns View.
Is there any way in OS X (Leopard) to have Finder windows remember the column widths when in Columns View. Can dimensions be associated with directories?
I think I must have stretched the 2nd and 3rd columns out from their default to read long filenames 100x a day since I started using Tiger / Panther. There are commercial Finder enhancing apps I've never installed one but if there is one that can do this I am interested.
Thanks In AdvanceThis worked well for me:
1) Add a Content Editor Web Part
2) Click Source Editor
3) Enter the following code:
[css] <style> .ms-viewheadertr { display: none;} </style> [/css]
4) Select Save
5) Go to Layout and Select 'Hidden' -
Moving multiple objects in a Finder window
Try a simple experiment in Tiger (10.4): in a Finder window with the icon view + snap to grid ON, select multiple grouped objects (e.g. 10-20) and move them to a different place in the same window.
They will not stay grouped but be sometimes dispersed in a random way or even move to places belonging to different grids.
Another experiment is to move a single object from one window into another one: this changes the grid of the second window from time to time.
This is extremely annoying when you want to keep the icons ordered.
This bug existed also in Panther.
I'm convinced it will exist in the next Mac OS X release. Do you bet ?Hi DarkStar,
In my case there are no other major application running when I see the moving multiple objects bug in the Finder. And (as for econupmac) the problem is intermittent.
I've checked the bug again and realize that it appears mostly when I'm moving a group of objects belonging to different columns. Here is what I did:
Create a folder with the 'Snap to grid' option ON and 'Icon size 16x16'. Set its View as Icon. Load this folder with 30 files and organize them into 3 groups of 10 files side by side. Enlarge the size of the folder to have plenty space by maneuver.
Now select the 5 bottom files of the middle column and move them gently around, then release them. The 'Snap to grid' feature will work fine and the files will be shifted to the nearest grid position... except when the files will stay in the middle of nowhere (you might need to do it several times until it happens).
THIS IS THE APPLE BUG.
This bug is more easily seen when a group of objects belonging to 2 adjacent columns is moved. Check this on a nicely arranged folder : Select the 5 bottom files of the middle column and the 5 bottom files of the right column and move them slightly. I bet that they will not stick to the grid. This will create a second grid which corrupts the folder. The next time you'll move around objects in this folder you'll see how crazy the folder behaves.
